Ian Crocker - Samjae Taekwondo
Masters, Instructors, Students and Parents, It is my pleasure to announce to you the 2016 Samjae Hanmadang Tournament! The first of it’s kind in Newfoundland, this event will be an exciting mix of Taekwondo events, competition and demonstrations in the heart of Paradise. This is a celebration that will prove to be fun, entertaining, friendly, and something that you and your students will not want to miss! Saturday, February 20th, 2016 Elizabeth Park Elementary School in Paradise ( https://goo.gl/maps/ZN5kEaLfdiN2 ) 10 am to 4 pm Doors will open at 9:00 am There will be seven possible events to take part in at the tournament; Individual Poomsae, Pair Poomsae, Team Poomsae, Power Breaking, 3 Station Board Breaking, Highest Kick and Longest Kick. Registration will be $50 per person for any 3 events (each additional event will be $10 per event). Registrations can be submitted to your Instructor prior to the event with completed form and payment. Registrations will be accepted at the door with an additional $10 surcharge. Participants are reminded that they need to supply their own boards. Limited supplies will be available for sale at the venue on the day of the event. The event is open to schools of the Newfoundland Labrador Amateur Taekwondo Union. Participants must be registered members in good standing of their respective schools. We will also be having Demonstrations throughout the day, and we are still taking contributors. If you want to get involved send an email to [email protected]. Please see the information below for more details, and we look forward to seeing you there! Yours in Taekwondo, Ian Crocker Samjae Taekwondo Individual Poomsae – These are the official poomsae of the World Taekwondo Federation. These are the Taegueks and WTF/ Kukkiwon Black Belt patterns. Pair and Team Poomsae – Similar to the Individual Poomsae, these are official poomsae done by 2 or more people. Competitors can be of different belt levels and ages, and points will be awarded for synchronization and creativity. Longest Kick – Similar to the long jump at the Olympics, this is a skill competition to determine who in the division can kick the farthest. Competitors will do a flying kick, taking off at a set line on the floor, to strike a target (rebreakable board or paddle, depending on age). The target will be moved further away from the launch line with each round, and competitors will get 2 chances to hit the new mark or be eliminated. The three longest successful kicks of each division will be awarded medals. Highest Kick – How high up can you jump kick? This skill competition aims to find out! Each round the competitors in the division get 2 chances to hit the target or be eliminated, and every round it creeps higher. Rebreakable boards or aluminium pie plates will be used for targets and the 3 highest successful kicks in a division will be awarded medals. Power Breaking – This event is about the number of boards broken, either by a hand or foot. Competitors will need a board holding device or really good holders, and potentially a lot of boards. You will be judged on the number of boards broken, not on whether or not you broke your entire stack. Highest number of boards broken will determine the winner. *A Note on Boards: Power Breaking and 3 Station Breaking will be done with 1” thick x 12” wide dressed pine board. These are cut to 10” pieces for older teens and adults, or 8” and 6” for younger teens and preteens, respectively. Boards should be dry (not baked), room temperature and as free from knots as possible; wet, cold boards or ones full of knots can dramatically alter the strength of a board. 3 Station Board Breaking – This is straight-up, technical board breaking! Competitors will have 1 minute to complete the breaks at their 3 stations, and the total score is based on the stations they’ve successfully completed. There can be multiple breaks at each station but the moves have to be continuous (meaning you can’t do a roundhouse kick then stop and go in a different direction and do a side kick, it has to be a continuous round, 360 round, etc.). Each station must be different breaks, and we will be using a scoring system devised by Master Phil Power of Nova Scotia for scoring (see below for points details). Demonstrations – These can be almost anything you wish! Creative poomsae? Epic self-defence? Something different? If it fits in a 2 minute time limit and we think it’s appropriate, you’re good to go! Remember that demonstrators need to provide their own props and partners, and let us know in advance what they have in mind. Divisions and Sorting As there’s no sparring at this event, divisions will be fairly static. The following are the guidelines we will be using for the event, though some alterations may be made depending on registration numbers: By Belt By Age Yellow Green Blue Stripe Red Stripe Black 4, 5, 6 Stripe Stripe Yellow Green Blue Red 7, 8, 9 * Black Stripe 10, 11, 12 13+ *Placement depending on poomsae performed Awards Gold, Silver and 2 Bronze will be awarded in each Division for each event (excluding demonstrations).
