FESTIVAL PLACE COMMUNITY THEATRE EDUCATION supported by Theatre at Festival Place is a large part of our community life. Over 10,000 people attend the Christmas musical and the Family Day children’s productions. There are hundreds of individuals that participate as actors, dancers, carpenters, lighting and stage crew and the many other activities involved in bringing a show to our audience. Like sport, theatre teaches invaluable life enhancing skills like teamwork, responsibility, collaboration and leadership. Participants develop enhanced physical and intellectual capacities as well as life-long learning skills like analysis, problem solving, reasoning, abstract thinking, conceptualization and creative thinking, all of the skills so necessary to success in school and the workplace. The Rotary Club of Sherwood Park has a history of commitment to international and community philanthropic projects. THE ROTARY COMMUNITY THEATRE EDUCATION PROJECT Rotary recognizes the opportunities community theatre offers individuals for personal growth and development. Accordingly, Rotary is undertaking a project with Festival Place to support the offering of courses and training opportunities. This is a capacity building project, one in which the participating individuals will develop skills and be able to be better contributors to their community. Programmes will be offered year round commencing late this summer in areas like acting, script interpretation, dance, lighting design, sound, makeup and the many other skills involved in a theatrical production. Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters Friday, September 9, 2016 7:30 p.m. Genre: Country www.theboxmasters.com Kicking off the 2016/2017 season is rockabilly Americana charttoppers, Billy Bob Thornton & the Boxmasters. Billy Bob Thornton is best known as an Academy Award winning actor/filmmaker, but his first love has always been music and when paired with Teddy Andreadis (keyboard), J.D. Andrew (guitar) and other seasoned musicians, the group creates a sound rich in rhythm and story. They have released five studio albums including Modbilly, Somewhere Down The Road and their newest recording Providence. With a mix of British Invasion influences, LA rock and southern styles, including a taste of hillbilly, a night with the Boxmasters is a musical storytelling experience not to be missed. They bring their own unique musical tastes, talents and experiences together to “rock out” with Retro hits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, have fun and lend a helping hand. Each has worked professionally in the local music industry but they create music in Time Warp for the love of music, friends and to give back to their community. This is the 14th year for the festival, and the 3rd year that Festival Place has partnered with this outstanding young artist training program. This year they will present a Mainstage Opera and a Mainstage Musical in late June and early July, chosen to suit the voices that are accepted into this prestigious program. These are tomorrows great stars of opera and musical theatre stages around the world. PATIO SERIES July 5 - August 30 Summer 2017 kicks off with everyone’s favorite weekly concert series. The 21st Annual Qualico Patio Series presented by Qualico Communities will once again present an outstanding and eclectic group of performers from across Alberta, Canada and the Globe. The patio is the perfect place for a concert – it’s a relaxing setting in the evening sun amongst the beauty of Broadmoor Lake Park; and if it’s raining, we’ll just head inside to the banquet facilities. Rain or Shine, every Wednesday night Festival Place will present two acts. An eclectic variety of pop, jazz, world, Celtic, folk, blues and country will take to the stage and you never know what treasure you might discover. Artist Appreciation Sessions with Raymond Baril Raymond Baril is Section Head of Wind and Brass Department at Grant MacEwan University. He is in his thirteenth year as principal conductor and musical director of the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia. He has, for the past 25 years, been director of the Grant MacEwan University/University of Alberta jazz ensemble and has taught woodwinds, music history and jazz studies at Grant MacEwan for many years.
