horses to the Calificado Tribunal at the May 2009 show.
In order to secure the services of the panel of Tribunal

The Ignacio Bravo Garcia Clinic on July 12th and July 13th
sponsored by ANCCE & USPRE and graciously hosted at the
breeding facilities of Raul Bucio in Merced and Ramiro Mejia
in Chino, California was well attended by over 100 PRE Breeders, Owners and Enthusiasts.
Ignacio Bravo Garcia Clinic

The clinic kick started at the elegant facilities of Raul Bucio
known for his beautiful horses and celebrated throughout California for his commitment to the highest levels of hospitality. Upon
arrival, guests were welcomed by Raul, offered refreshments and
invited to tour the barn. Shade and refreshments were offered at
regular intervals throughout the warm day to make sure guests
found their visit comfortable and enjoyable. The following day,
Ramiro Mejia replicated traditional Hispanic hospitality in Chino.
Clinician, Ignacio Bravo offered a unique perspective at both
sites as a P.R.E. Breeder, accomplished Trainer, Grand Prix level
dressage rider and ANCCE Judge. He was charming, knowledgeable and tireless in his efforts to teach all attendants about the
preparation and presentation of our wonderful horses. His enthousiasm for the Pure Spanish Horse was contagious and his useful
information in abundance.
Amongst the many topics addressed, D. Ignacio gave an overview of what to look for in a well presented functionality test.
The horse should be ridden such that he is obedient to the rider’s
aids but with freedom to express his natural gaits. The horse
should be ridden forward without too much restriction by the
rider’s hands. Particular attention should be paid to the walk

which is all too often
overlooked when
preparing the horse
for the functionality
test. Enrique Valencia
kindly offered his
stunning stallion, Barroco CA to be used
in the functionality
demonstration.
Ignacio Bravo also
suggested a path to

presentation which

bringing the horse into the arena just to play, marking the moment
as “fun time” followed gradually by in-hand halter training.
The clinic included a section on conformation and how the PRE
horse is scored by the Judges, detailed instructions on grooming and in particular how to trim the mane on mares and young
horses for competitions. Three different horses of varying ages
were used during the lecture and demonstration.
Although the clinic was
given in Spanish, all
attendees commended
Ramiro Vega for serving
as the clinic interpreter.
Beyond the congenial
atmosphere and good
food, the clinic attendees
were treated to a dancing
horse exhibition to music
by Enrique Valencia and
Barroco after the clinic.

USPRE and its members
wish to thank ANCCE
and particularly Ignacio Bravo Garcia for this informative and
memorable seminar. His enthusiasm for the Pure Spanish Horse
was contagious and his useful information abundant.
The California Horse Breeders would like to express their appreciation to our sister associations, ANCCE Spain and USPRE
USA, whose support made these clinics possible. Mr. Ignacio
Bravo (Estremadura Spain) delivered a wonderful performance
with his extensive knowledge and experience. As a result of the
positive impact we are planning more ANCCE clinics in 2009.

There are many names that could fit a
man like Alexander Zilo—executive,
innovator, leader, visionary—but
the best way to describe him is
Renaissance Man. Following an
international career in Media and
Management, Alexander turned
his pastime of horses into a
consuming passion. A collector
of art and all things beautiful,
Alex became enchanted with
the nobility and beauty of the
P.R.E. Horse and when he eventually
travelled to Spain to find one, his sensitive eye
selected a young stallion from the fields that would become
within a year the Champion of Champions in Spain—Copon.
Alex is a man of relationships and he quickly established friendships, a rapport and credibility with the heads of the Spanish
Breeders associations in Spain, as he did also in Mexico and
Latin America. His work for the P.R.E. Horse in America was
dedicated to maintaining those relationships with Spain, for the
sake of the horse as well as for his many friends who desired
to breed an equine product that met the standards of the most
demanding registry for the Spanish Horse, the Libro Geneologico
now managed by ANCCE.
It was his commitment to the P.R.E. Horse that led him to part
ways with former associations who sought to imitate and cheapen
the value of his beloved P.R.E. Horse. It was this same passion
that led him to formally join in the work with ANCCE—as Delegado to North America—and also to be a founder of the United
States P.R.E. Association in late 2007. The following year, 2008,
was a historic one for the P.R.E. Horse in America. Over 2000
P.R.E. horses from American breeding farms were added to the
Libro Geneologico in the United States and Alex put his hands on
every single one of them. His commitment to seeing this breed be
30
a success in America was so strong that, in his role of Delegado,
Alex spent several months last year traveling around the United
States and assisting the veterinary teams sent by ANCCE in personally overseeing the inscription and revision of US‑bred horses.
Today, the P.R.E. Horse in America has weathered many conflicts
and now stands securely represented by its US aficionados and
breeders, by the efforts of Breeders Associations and national
promotional associations such as USPRE, and by the parent studbook and world representative of the P.R.E. Horse, ANCCE.
Alex’s efforts to bring us all to this point were honored in the
most esteemed way at SICAB in 2008, where Alex was presented
the Pura Casta Premios 2008 Trofeo Especiale a la Difusion del
P.R.E.—alongside only three others including the 2008 Spanish Olympic Dressage Team rider. Alex was recognized for his
service and sacrifice for the breeders and horses of the United
States, his commitment to a formal relationship between Spain
and the United States in the development of the P.R.E. Horse, and
for his dedication to what he believes in the face of opposition
and deception. Alexander Zilo’s love of beauty, leadership skills,
and dream of owning a P.R.E. horse has brought the Renaissance
to America in the perfect form of our noble horse.

Acontecimientos Especiales
E V E N I N G E N T E R TA I N M E N T
Several unforgettable events were sheduled for our show in 2008 that were
enjoyed by all attendees. We plan on having very similar exiting events in 2009.
Our noble P.R.E. horses are elegant and
versatile. Three events were scheduled
to showcase the talents and abilities of
our breed. On Friday, we presented Viva
Mexico, on Saturday, Viva Feria and on
Sunday, El Caballo Rey De Reyes. We
invited you to participate in all the events
and to experience the many surprises we
have planned. And we know you enjoyed all
the delicious Mexican food available!
Viva Mexico (Homage to the Mexican Tradition)
An entertaining exploration of the colorful
tradition and rich
culture of Mexico,
where the horse has
played an integral
role for centuries.
The skillful Mexican
equestrian women of the Escaramusa Team and the Mexican
Charros performed with Pure Spanish Horses. We were honored
to have riders from as far away as San Francisco and Las Vegas
featured in our grand exhibition of dancing P.R.E. horses and live
music. Professional singers on horseback paid tribute to the Pure
Spanish Horse.
Viva Feria (Enjoy with the Entire Family)
An unforgettable and fabulous evening of
family-oriented events that continued to
highlight the majesty of the magnificent
and noble Pure Spanish Horse. Tomorrow’s
generation of horse enthusiasts, young
riders (ages 7 to 17), demonstrated their
horsemanship skills. Professional artists
danced to live music. Other events included
Alta Escuela exhibitions by well-known
California trainers, performances by a
traditional Mexican dance group, and the
second round of Señorita Feria 2008.
44
El Caballo Rey De Reyes (King of Kings)
This final celebratory party made you
and your family feel like royalty as
we shared our passion and admiration
for the elegance and nobility of the
Pure Spanish Horse. Notable personalities from the P.R.E. Horse World
and Guests of Honor joined us from
the United States and abroad, including Central America and Spain. On
this night we recognized the prizes
won by participating breeders. The
entertainment included traditional
Flamenco music accompanied by a
wonderful Flamenco dance group,
the final selection and coronation of
Señorita Feria del Caballo Español
2008, and an amazing presentation
of cobras, which are groups of mares
tied together at the neck and shown by one handler.
Also on Sunday evening, we hosted
the Hon. Don Ezequiel Peña, who
performed with his beautiful Spanish
Horses. The California P.R.E. Horse
Breeders and all the attendees honored
Don Ezequiel Peña for his outstanding contribution in promoting the Pure
Spanish Horse, and recognized him as
the Ambassador of the Pure Spanish Horse in the Americas (El
Embajador del Caballo Español en las Americas).
This promises to be an unforgettable night! Don’t miss out...
Photo Shoot with Rafael Lemos
Revered photographer, Rafael Lemos has chronicled the beauty and altheticism of the Spanish
horse for many years in Spain. We were extremely
fortunate to have this icon present at Feria de la
Caballo Español to capture our horses on film.
Contact show officials if you want to make an
appointment for a Ranch Call or a private appointment with Sr. Lemos.
Sunday evening’s event, the final

Horses may be shown in any suitable halter

not a requisite. One handler may handle more

t-shirts or tennis shoes.) Tailers are permitted;
there is to be no snapping of a whip held by a tailer. Mares may
be shown with suckling at their side; sucklings may be shown

Horses three years of age and older, except for geldings and

of age and older must complete the Functionality Test which
counts for 25% of their morphology score for their In-Hand
scores to be counted. A snaffle bit is obligatory. If you are using
single reins, then snaffle bit only. For Double reins, normal bits
and chains are allowed along with a mandatory snaffle bit. No
whips allowed in the class.
The horses will enter the ring at the walk. They will line up
shoulder-to-shoulder, wait for the steward to beckon, then walk to
the judge. They will walk to the rail and walk back to the judge.
They will then trot to the rail, canter several circles if age group
requires and trot back to the judge, stand and be shown. They will
trot away from the judge and take their position in the end of the
string of horses in the class.

of a carta and who later fail to be presented or fail to be approved
when presented for revision will forfeit their placement in the
