Which menu items
are the favorites at
Lelli’s? “All of our veal
dishes are wonderful,”
Zarkin says. “Our most
famous menu item is
the Chateaubriand.
Probably our most
popular steak dishes
are the dinner cut and
extra cut filet served
with the Lelli’s doublebaked mashed potatoes
and vegetable. Our
spaghetti Bolognese
sauce is made from 100
percent ground prime
filet mignon — no pork
at all. And our famous
Lelli’s minestrone is 100
percent vegetarian.”
House specialties
include eggplant parmigiana, provimi calves liver, medallions of prime
tenderloin Siciliano and
sliced tenderloin sherry.
All dinners include salad
or minestrone, potato
and vegetable. Full sixcourse meals include an antipasto tray, salad,
minestrone, spaghetti Bolognese, potato,
vegetable and spumoni or lemon ice.
The restaurant has 59 employees. Its
veranda on the Copper Creek Golf Course is a
popular spot for summer parties.
What separates Lelli’s from its competitors? “Besides our food and our heritage, at
Lelli’s there is an owner-operator on site all
the time to take care of our customers’ needs
and wants,” Zarkin says. “We’re here to keep
people happy.” ■

“G

“Wow! From start to finish, it
was first-class.”
“Great, romantic atmosphere. Can’t wait to
go back.”
“An original Detroit gem lives on!”
Those are a few of the comments from
guests at Steven Lelli’s Inn on the Green in
Farmington Hills. It’s no wonder that Jewish
News readers selected it as the area’s best
Italian restaurant.
Yes, it’s from the same heritage as the
legendary Lelli’s on Woodward at Bethune in
Detroit, which was founded by Nerio and Irene
Lelli in 1939 and served the finest Italian food
for six decades before being destroyed by a
fire in 2000. Grandson Steven Lelli and ownerpartner Mark Zarkin opened their restaurant
three years ago at the Copper Creek Golf
Course on 12 Mile Road west of Halsted, carrying on the traditions of the original.
“We’re attempting to follow faithfully
Steve’s grandparents’ recipes and menus
and revive an old style of dining,” Zarkin says.
“Everything’s made from scratch — our soups,
sauces, pastas, dressings. It’s really made the
good old-fashioned way.”
Zarkin and Lelli have been friends since
childhood. “I grew up in Oak Park. Lelli’s
was our family’s favorite restaurant,” Zarkin
recalls. “During the holidays, I would help out
in the kitchen sometimes.” His early start in
the restaurant business also included peeling
potatoes at age 6 for Bloom’s Kosher Catering,
owned by his aunt Shirley.
The early hands-on experience has paid off.
“I know the complete Lelli’s history and the
recipes. I taste the sauces, soups and dressings every day to make sure they’re perfectly
prepared,” Zarkin says.
That includes the famous zip sauce invented
decades ago by Nerio Lelli. “It’s often imitated,
but never duplicated,” says Zarkin. “It’s really a
wonderful sauce for a fine piece of meat.”
The chef at Lelli’s worked at the original
location, and some of the servers have worked
at Lelli’s for more than 30 years.
“We’re just steady as she goes,” Zarkin
says. “We’ve been around a long time.
Mark Zarkin
We’re consistent. It’s a beautiful
place to dine, and we really are
a mom-and-pop operation. My
family is here all the time to take
care of our guests.”
The clientele at Lelli’s spans
the generations. “Grandparents
are teaching their grandkids
about Lelli’s, telling them how
they used to eat at the restaurant Downtown all the time,”
says Zarkin. “A lot of customers have told me
they got engaged at Lelli’s.
“Recently, a woman in her 90s came in
and brought us an original powder blue Lelli’s
menu — the only one we’ve seen that doesn’t
say ‘since 1939’. Her nephew came in from out
of town, and she asked him to bring her here
for dinner.”
Lelli’s Inn on the Green has a main dining
room that seats 150 and expands into a
lower-level dining room for 70. A terrace and a
veranda each seat another 100 people. The facility is available for parties of all types. There
is no room charge for special events. On-site
and home catering is also available.
“For the first time in our history, we will be
open Christmas Day to give the Jewish community an alternative from the norm,” says
Zarkin. “That’s one of the benefits of having a
Jewish owner.”
Lelli’s Inn on the Green is open for lunch from
11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
Dinner hours are 3-10 p.m. Tuesdays through
Thursdays, 4-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays

Choosing an Estate Sale Company
• Inquire about a company’s knowledge,
background and insurance. Remember
— don’t choose a company based only
on its commission rate.
• Visit some of the company’s sales
unannounced — take note of the
sale’s attendance, the staffing and the
condition of the house. Are all items
clean and priced? Is there adequate
staff to provide proper assistance and
security? Are they friendly, courteous
and helpful?
• Talk with some of the company’s
staff — learn more about their
qualifications and expertise.
• Interview some customers about their
experiences.
• Ask for and check references!
Testimonials
“I have to compliment you on the
outstanding job you did for my parents’
estate sale. Your professionalism was
obvious from the minute you came to
the house to evaluate their belongings.
I had interviewed other companies and
no one knew the value of items like you
did.”
— Sheryl
“I wanted to compliment you and your
staff on the estate sales you hosted in
Novi and Northville this past weekend.
It was a pleasure to shop for treasures
in such beautiful homes. The sales were
well organized and the staff was efficient
and cordial.”
— SR
“We want to thank you for the extraordinary job you did with our estate sale.
From the initial consultation to the final
clean-up, you were courteous, professional, patient, and incredibly successful.
Thank you again and again.”

Family Law| Annette Benson
Unwavering Conviction,
Unparalleled Outcomes for Clients:
Annette Benson of Benson Family Law earns “Best”
designation by securing desired results in every case.
Carolyn Krieger-Cohen { Contributing Writer
A
nnette Benson is often described
by her clients, opposing counsel,
mediators and judges alike as
relentless, assertive, driven, exceedingly
prepared, even a pit bull in high heels.
These monikers suit the petite,
powerhouse founder of Benson Family Law
in Bingham Farms just fine. It is her wellknown passion for securing the best outcome
in each case, her well-honed negotiating
skills, and the strong bonds she develops
with her clients that have earned Benson the
distinction of being voted Best Family Law
Attorney by Jewish News readers who shared
their accolades.
“Your dedication and relentless pursuit to
protect my children and get me custody is
a gift I will never forget,” said Michael, one
grateful client.
“Over the last three years, you have
become part of my life. You helped me regain
my sanity and focus, and no man will ever
have control over me again,” shared client
Beth.
For Benson, practicing family law is a
calling rather than a job, and one which
beckoned early on. “I always wanted to be
a lawyer; there was never any other career
path for me,” she explained.
Benson’s clients are often immersed in
the most stressful situations they have ever
encountered in their personal or professional
lives, such as divorce, custody battles, postjudgment issues and domestic violence
scenarios. They find in Benson a tireless,
trusted, fearless advocate who is never
intimidated in the courtroom.
The child of Jewish immigrant parents and
a Michigan native, Benson was raised with a
strong work ethic and a focus on education
and independence. Her parents taught her
that achieving success required the “sechel”
to outsmart others, which has served Benson
and her clients well.
While clerking for a Wayne County
judge during law school, Benson gained an
invaluable, behind-the-scenes perspective
on the legal system as well as intimate
knowledge of how to best present cases

Entertainment | Emagine Theater
Readers’ choice for best
movie theater.
Allan Nahajewski { Contributing Writer
‘‘W
e strive to give you the
best movie-going experience possible,” said
Ruth Daniels, senior vice
president of advertising, sales and marketing for Emagine Entertainment. “That’s the
key to our success.”
That philosophy is working. Jewish News
readers have selected Emagine as the
area’s best movie theater.
“We’re delighted to be recognized by the
readers of the Jewish News,” said Daniels.
“We’ve hosted events for several Jewish
organizations, and this honor reaffirms that
our theaters are continuing to deliver on
our promise.”
Awards are nothing new for Emagine
Theatres, which previously have been
recognized as the best by the Detroit Free
Press, Detroit News, Observer and Eccentric
Newspapers, Metro Times, Real Detroit,
Hour Magazine and WDIV.
Emagine theaters can be found in Royal
Oak, Novi, Canton, Rochester Hills, Woodhaven, Clio and Birch Run. In total, these
theaters have 80 screens, accommodating
more than 15,000 moviegoers in auditoriums of 90 to 450 seats.
Setting The Standard
Technology and luxury are Emagine’s trademarks.
Emagine was first theater chain in the
industry to convert to 100 percent digital
projection. In 1997, Emagine’s Cinema Hollywood in Birch Run was the first theater in
Michigan to open with all stadium seating.
At most Emagine locations, luxury sections in some auditoriums include reserved

Emagine
seating and other upscale amenities, such as
valet parking.
Emagine Royal Oak includes boutique
bowling and a banquet center.
All Emagine Theatres offer adult patrons
the option of enjoying their favorite cocktail,
beer or wine. A two-drink maximum is
strictly enforced.
Emagine auditoriums are equipped with
low-light surveillance cameras as a security
measure.
The quest to provide the best movie-going experience led to the creation in 2012 of
“The Emagine Entertainment Experience,”
also known as E3. E3 premium large-format
auditoriums in the Royal Oak, Canton and
Novi locations feature enormous floor-toceiling screens, outstanding digital sound
and picture quality, ultra-comfortable seats
and exquisite decor.
With the movie industry moving to an
early release schedule for large-format
theaters, Emagine took the initiative to set a
new standard.
“We studied other premium large-format
auditoriums and designed our own,” said
David Zylstra, vice president of technology
for Emagine Entertainment. “We enlarged
the screens to be floor-to-ceiling, and we
are still able to qualify for Xbrite 3D files,
which are three times brighter than regular
3D. The audio systems were put on steroids
with 7.1 surround sound, tri-amplified stage
channels and thunderous sub-bass. We kept
our best-in-class projectors for the highestquality digital projection.”
A year ago, Dolby Atmos sound was installed in the premium auditoriums in Royal
Oak, Canton and Novi.
“It’s the most significant development in
audio since surround sound,” said Zylstra.
“It’s a unique layered approach to sound
design, delivering a powerful and dramatic
new listening experience. It creates a natural
and lifelike environment that matches the
story and reflects the artist’s intent.”
Emagine Theatres have come a long
way in a short time. Paul Glantz, founder
and president, opened the Novi location in
2002. He previously co-owned a one-screen
theater in Clarkston and built Cinema Hollywood in Birch Run in 1997. The Canton
theater opened in 2004, followed by new
theaters in Woodhaven in 2009, Rochester
Hills in 2010 and Royal Oak in 2011.
A Wealth Of Special Touches
The Royal Oak location includes the Star
Lanes restaurant and sports bar with a banquet center with a large reception hall and
a private room with bowling, billiards and
shuffleboard, as well as a small lounge.
“It’s becoming quite a popular location
for special events, and you don’t have to
bring anything in — everything is there —
bowling, banquet hall, dance floor, video
montages,” says Daniels. “It’s great for
wedding events, bar and bat mitzvahs or
corporate and personal holiday parties of
all sizes. We can host everything from a sitdown dinner for 200, a strolling dinner for
up to 800, a team-building activity for 50 or
a small gathering for a family.”
New to Emagine Royal Oak are the
All-Access Pass and Family Fun Day Pass.
“These cover movies, popcorn, bowling, including shoes, and a meal all for one price,”
says Daniels. “It’s a great way to spend a
Entertainment
few hours with friends or family.”
The All-Access Pass and Family Fun Day
Pass can be purchased at the box office
or be given as a gift by purchasing a gift
card. Emagine Magic cards are available
in denominations starting at $15 and can
be used for tickets and at the concession
stands. For any inquiries, call Marilyn at
(248) 468-2990 ext. 107, or email
[email protected].
Another popular Emagine feature is the
“Dinner and a Movie.” Ten area restaurants offer a special dinner package that
includes tickets to an Emagine theatre. The
packages are available for purchase at the
participating restaurants, which are listed
on the Emagine website.
Emagine Theatres also offer a Rewards
Membership Program, which awards points
earned through purchases and provides
special offers for members only. Members
can create an online account to track their
points toward reward offers. Moviegoers
can sign up for membership at most Emagine Theatres.
Emagine also has a kids’ club. “We try to
appeal to the entire family,” said Daniels.
“We know if you come to the movies as a
child and you have a good time, you’re going to be coming the rest of your life.”
Emagine has about 500 employees. Most
are young people who are working parttime. “Our theaters provide a wonderful
opportunity for young people to gain work
experience in a dynamic, fun setting,” said
Daniels. Applications can be downloaded
from the Emagine website and dropped off
at the theaters.
Emagine Opportunities
In addition to offering a premium experience for moviegoers, Emagine Theatres are
also available for private events, including:
Theatre Rentals and Screenings
If it is something you want to watch on a
large screen, an Emagine rental can make
it happen. Whether you are looking for a
cozy, small private event or something on
a grander scale, Emagine has many options
to choose for your film screening, movie
screening, independent film screening or
corporate presentation.
Personal Celebrations and Private
Screenings
Whether it is your parents’ wedding video,
your baby’s first birthday, or your husband
or wife’s 50th birthday, Emagine Theatres
can highlight the event by showing photo
montages or a DVD on the big screen.
Independent Film Screenings
Independent filmmakers can rent an auditorium to share their project with friends,
family, cast and crew or showcase their film
for prospective distributors. Options range
from a red carpet premiere to a weeklong
run of the film.
Corporate Presentations and
Meetings
Business events and meetings can be innovative at Emagine Theatres. Auditoriums can
host a speaker or informational meetings.
With digital projection capabilities, PowerPoint presentations come alive. In addition,
Emagine can provide a range of audio and
visual choices to suit your needs, including
easels, wireless microphones and podiums.
From breakfast to lunch to dinner, Emagine
can provide catering to complement meetings at any time of day. Big-screen entertainment — a movie or even a popular sporting
event — can provide a satisfying end to a
memorable, impactful day. ■

An Important Message from
Attorney Ken Gross & THAV GROSS PC
Change is
the Law
of Life
Watching the coverage of the 50th
Anniversary of that awful day in Dallas
– November 22, 1963 – I was struck with
profound sadness – as if reliving the sad
empty feeling felt by all in 1963. I was but
9 years then,– too young to understand
death, but old enough to comprehend the
enormity of what occurred. By contrast,
anger dominants me when I think of
September 11, 2001 – the other moment
in time that forever stands still. We live
in a difficult world - health care costs,
terrorism, Iran, Syria, chemical weapons,
uranium enrichment, the recession, illness.
Kennedy’s great looks paled in comparison
to his words. He once said, “Change is
the law of life. And those who look only
to the past or present are certain to miss
the future.” The financial stresses faced
by so many in the recession became
a calling for us at Thav Gross to find
unique paths to help people make the
most of their future. We savor the quiet
satisfaction gained from saving someone
from foreclosure, or helping them to
shed needless credit card debt or resolve a
tax problem – so their future is secure. Of
course we are proud of all business related
services we provide, but nothing makes us
feel better when the “turnaround” allows
an elderly couple to enjoy their remaining
years.
THAV GROSS has been
solving its clients’ business, tax
and financial problems since 1982.
Be sure to tune in to the Financial
Crisis Talk Center on Radio and
now on TV - Saturday's at 8:30
AM – on WDFN 1130 AM, “The
Fan,”and Sunday’s at 11 AM on
MyTV20
We are unique – catch the shows
& visit our websites to see why!
Our sincerest thanks to our community for
the appreciation shown to us - but most
of all for the opportunity to serve your
present and future needs. “Thing do not happen. Things are made to happen.” - John F. Kennedy

Dentistry for Total Body Wellness
Dr. Doug Thompson, Director of Integrative Oral Medicine, and his team of professionals
have a keen awareness of the connection between dental health and overall health; this is what
Integrative Oral Medicine is all about.
At Integrative Oral Medicine, our goal is to improve the quality, the vitality, and potentially
the length of your life through the evaluation and care of your oral health. You can be sick with
a healthy mouth but you can’t be healthy with a sick mouth.
Integrative Oral Medicine provides all traditional dental services including cosmetic work,
smile makeovers, implants, gum disease treatments, cleanings, fillings, crowns, whitening,
complex rehabilitations and much more.
We welcome every concern from the simple to complex, and we love treating families. In
addition to preventing and controlling diseases that cause unnecessary dental treatment, we
can restore a smile you use to have or create a smile you never had. Let us outline a strategy
of long term health for you.
“We want to do more than just create beautiful smiles, we
what to help those smiling be as healthy as they can be.”

Haggerty in West Bloomfield. The winner

peppered with high-definition televisions
to ensure that whatever sporting events
on TV fans want to watch will be available
for their viewing pleasure. It also boasts
an extensive beer menu and is a certified
“Distinguished Master Draught Retailer.”
“We concentrate on three things: food,
service and sports,” says owner Phil Zakaria, who opened the pub in 2006. “ We
also have very family-friendly prices. We
know the economy is still tough for many of
our customers, so we offer a lot of specials.”
Specials at the Library Sports Pub include
two-for-one burgers Saturday and Sunday
until 4 p.m. or half-off pizza from 6 p.m.
to close every Monday for Monday Night
Football fans. And every Saturday night from
10 p.m.-2 a.m., enjoy half-off all alcohol.
Sandwiches are two-for-one on Tuesdays
from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The pub features
Happy Hour 4-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, where
customers enjoy half-off appetizers with the
purchase of two cocktails (drink specials
last until 7 p.m.). Specials are posted on the
pub’s website, http://librarypub.com.
You also might want to check out Play
Golf 365, a new venture by Al Zara and
Zaid Kased attached to the Library Sports
Pub and Grill. Play Golf 365 features four
virtual golf simulators using Tru-Golf
technology that allows customers to
“play” the world’s best golf courses, from
Pebble Beach to Castle Pines. Several
other choices can be found on its website,
playgolfallyear.com.
Customers at Play Golf 365 have a call
button to order food and drinks from the
Library Pub and Sports Grill next door.
“It’s a fun place,” Zakaria says. “They also
have shooting simulators for hunters.”
The next-door neighbor relationship
with Play Golf 365 was a natural for Library Sports Pub and Grill. “We are all about
sports,” Zakaria says, “a family place where
you can watch the game and get good food
at great prices.”
Don’t be surprised if you have to wait for
a table during a big game, though. “The last
Lions game there was a line out the door,”
he adds. ■

Restaurant | Antonio’s Cucina Italiana
Antonio’s
Cucina Italiana
Family recipes prepared the old-fashioned way.
R
ugiero family members are looking forward to an exciting 2014
when they will be celebrating
the 50th anniversary of their first restaurant, Roman Village Cucina Italiana
on Dix Avenue in Dearborn. The family
also will open its fifth location next
year at Plymouth and Merriman roads
in Livonia.
Antonio and Enrica (Rita) Rugiero
started it all in 1964. Their sons Anthony, Marco, Robert and Patrick all
work in the family business.
“Growing up, the restaurant was our
playground,” says Anthony, who today
is the company president. “We didn’t
have babysitters, so we would spend most of
our time at the restaurant while mom and dad
worked. We learned a lot from being there.”
Anthony and his brothers helped grow the
business, opening an Antonio’s Cucina Italiana
on Ford Road in Dearborn Heights in 1992, on
12 Mile Road in Farmington Hills in 2000 and
on Canton Center Road in Canton in 2007.
All four restaurants have pasta factories in
the dining room where pasta is made daily, as
well as cappuccino machines imported from
Italy. All soups, sauces, breads and dressings
are made fresh daily in-house.
“In today’s economy, family-owned restaurants that have been in business for 50 years
are not that common, and that’s something
that comes through on everything we do,”
Rugiero says. “The recipes are the same ones
my mother used back home in Italy. Mom’s
still in the kitchen overseeing food operations,
making sure that the quality is there, while my
brothers and I oversee the operations.”
Rugiero said the cornerstones of the business are great food, friendly service, a wonderful atmosphere and a good price. The average
price of an entree is $12.
“My father taught us how to do things
old-school — hands-on, traditional, hard work
with ethics. We learned the value of a dollar
and how to run a business,” he says.
“We incorporate new ideas, too. We keep
an open mind to understanding what people
are looking for today. You put that together,
and you’ve got a combination that nobody can
compete against.”

The new elements include the restaurants’
decor.
“When you walk in the door, you see a nice,
clean place that feels up-to-date,” says Rugiero. “It’s authentic Venetian design — smart,
casual, yet family friendly. Even though Roman
Village has been around nearly 50 years, we’ve
updated the dining rooms, bar, kitchen and
bathrooms, so it looks brand new, too.”
Signature dishes at the restaurants include
Gnocchi Rita, served with Mama Rita’s
special pancetta and mushroom sauce, and
Chicken Antonio, pan-prepared tender breast
of chicken smothered in a creamy white
sauce topped with provolone cheese. Other
specialties include polenta, veal chops, awardwinning pizza, calzones, fresh-baked bread and
homemade cannoli.
“The quality is in the details,” Rugiero
says. “People see it. They come in and sense
that family feel. You’d be surprised. Even a
consumer who’s not Italian understands great
Italian food when they have it.”
One house specialty is Spaghetti Carbonara
Alla Bocelli, a recipe that famous Italian
tenor and songwriter Andrea Bocelli
prepared himself at Roman Village
Italian Cucina.
“I sit on the board of the Opera
House, and I love Bocelli’s music,”
Rugiero says. “When he came to town,
we met and found we had a lot in common. He loves to cook, so I invited him
to our restaurant to cook his favorite
dish. It was delicious. I asked if we
could add it to our menu; he said yes.”
Anthony’s mother Rita’s hometown is Perugia, just an hour’s drive
to Bocelli’s hometown of Volterra,
Italy, where Anthony is involved in the
University of Detroit Mercy-Volterra, a school
where American students study the art of Italian architecture.
Rugiero told the Jewish News that he is
especially grateful for the support he receives
from the Jewish community.
“My landlord, Stuart Frankel, is a great
friend who helped us open our business in
Dearborn Heights,” he says. “I think Jewish
families are a lot like Italian families because
we both value tradition. We have many regular Jewish customers, and I know they respect
the fact that the food is made from scratch.
“We don’t use artificial flavors or preservatives. They love our chicken soup, because like
matzo ball soup, it’s made the old-fashioned
way with real soup hens, not with bouillon
cubes. They love our minestrone soup. They
say it’s the one of the best they’ve ever had.”
Rugiero says that one growing tradition is
for customers to come in to buy take-and-bake
lasagna the day before a holiday so they can
make it a part of their holiday meals.
Another popular dish during hunting season
is rabbit cacciatore.
“Cacciatore means hunter in Italian,” says
Rugiero. “People are familiar with chicken cacciatore, but traditionally, it’s made with rabbit.
My mother makes it in the morning, and it’s
gone that day.”
All four restaurants are open seven days
a week. For menus and further information
about banquets, catering, gift cards and
special events, visit www.antoniosrestaurants.
