Discover A Pain-Free Life
No drugs - No injections - No side effects
Jeff Morton, director of Pain Free Life Centers
oday, many of us are living in chronic pain. It prevents us from taking a
walk, picking up our child (or grandchild), or even putting groceries into the
car. What if something could remove that
persistent pain? What if your quality of life
could be richer, without the downfalls of
traditional pain management? A proven
technology, laser therapy, has become a
revolutionary tool in the field of safe and
effective pain relief.
At Pain Free Life Centers in Troy, center
director Jeff Morton sums up the benefits
of laser therapy succinctly. “No drugs, no
surgery, no injections, no side effects. Just
pain relief, pure and simple.”
The center treats a wide variety of
conditions, and the benefits of this therapy
extend to anyone suffering from any type
of pain.
Morton explains how the laser light
penetrates through the skin to pinpoint
the source of pain at the cellular level.
“We not only treat the inflammation that
is causing much of the pain, but the laser
also increases blood flow, which helps
speed the healing process.”
A great client success story is Dave
Rozema, the retired Detroit Tigers pitcher
whose sizzling fastballs helped the team

win the World Series in 1984. After a
career in professional sports, he suffered
from chronic knee pain, even after five
arthroscopic surgeries. But when he began
medical laser treatments at Pain Free Life
Centers he once again was able to live a
pain-free life.
For Morton, a certified laser
practitioner, providing pain relief has been
a personal crusade. When he was 13
years old, he watched his mother die from
cancer with doctors unable to relieve her
physical pain. He vowed to find answers to
relieve suffering for others. When the FDA
cleared laser treatment for pain therapy,
he knew he had found his solution. He
opened a clinic in 2012 and has watched
his practice grow exponentially.
Patients say they find genuine relief
from conditions as diverse as spinal
stenosis, knee pain, arthritis, back pain,
migraines and neuropathy. Though the
conditions treated are diverse, the root
causes of the pain are very similar, and all
respond positively to laser light therapy.
“One patient suffered from neuropathy
so badly he wanted his feet amputated.
After laser treatment, the results were
overwhelming. Three months later, he
was able to dance at his daughter’s
wedding. This is one example of years
of positive outcomes that people have
discovered by the use of laser therapy at
our clinic,” Morton said.
A common question asked before
a patient begins laser therapy is are
treatments safe. Morton notes that his
medical lasers are cleared by the FDA to
provide patients with the safest, noninvasive treatment option available.
Trained laserologists administer a warm,
soothing application, and a majority of
their patients feel relief after the initial
visit. Pain Free Life Centers is so confident
in what it does that it offers a free
consultation and free initial treatment.
“To say the results can be life changing
is an understatement,” Morton said. “It
is extremely gratifying to see patients of
all ages able to live a better quality of life
with less pain. I truly love being able to do
what I do.”

Voted Best High-End Furniture Store and Design Studio in Michigan by Detroit Home and Styleline Magazines
High-end does not mean overpriced.
If a store is always “on sale”
one has to wonder what the
“real” price is.
There are no shortcuts in life, at least none worth taking. That is especially
true when it comes to furniture. We hand-select every item we sell, each item
is chosen specifically for the lifestyle and budget for each client. Yes, you
can find less expensive furniture — you will not find better quality, value or
selection. Our furniture is as exceptional and unique as you.

C
onducting business at a power
breakfast becomes enjoyable when
delicious food and superior service
are involved.
Two Birmingham/Bloomfield
restaurants, upscale yet approachable,
more than fill the bill with their creative
individual menus and chalkboard specials
at breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch and
dinner.
Bill’s, on Woodward Avenue at Long
Lake Road in Bloomfield Hills, and Beverly
Hills Grill, on Southfield Road north of
13 Mile Road, are among six distinctive
Roberts Restaurant Group (RRG)
properties in Oakland County.
Last year, Detroit Jewish News readers
chose the clubby yet whimsical Bill’s as
Best New Restaurant in the JN’s Best
of Michigan poll, tied for the honor
with another RRG property – Café ML
in Bloomfield Township. The innovative
Beverly Hills Grill, sporting a fresh design
this fall, remains a local favorite since
opening in 1988.
RRG proprietor Bill Roberts says
“consistency” is a key to his company’s
success.
“We’ve tried to use the same standards
of hospitality and food quality at all six
restaurants, even though the menus,
design and neighborhoods are different,”
he said.
After Roberts secures a location, he and
Birmingham designer Ron Rea brainstorm
about the individual look and style of the
restaurant they want to create.
“He has a great feel for what people
respond to,” Roberts said.
Corporate Chef Patrick Roettele and
Director of Operations Carl Volk assist
with developing each kitchen’s layout,
menu, wine list and staffing needs. The
RRG team develops menus and recipes,
relying on staff feedback. Seasonal food,
often from local sources, is the byword.
Opened in August of 2014, Bill’s stands
on the site of the legendary Fox & Hounds
steakhouse.
In the vestibule, a green wingtip leather
chair, framed photos and café curtains
with views of the bar set a classic tone.
Beverly Hills Grill
Bill’s
The dining room’s dark ceiling features
barn-wood rafters and a large brass
chandelier near the fireplace.
Deep navy walls provide a neutral
backdrop for the carefully edited wall
display, unified by antique mirrors and
artwork in gold frames. A photo of
hometown girl Madonna coexists with
historical portraits and school rosters,
old plat maps and signs, steering wheels,
blown-up portions of a $50 bill and
mounted deer and moose heads.
Diners sit at wood high-top or low
tables. Place settings rest on black leather
chargers at breakfast and lunch, and
checkered tablecloths are brought out to
change the look of the restaurant during
dinner. Sturdy wavy glass divides the bar
and dining room.
By comparison, Beverly Hills Grill
is “upscale but with a neighborhood
feel,” said Volk. The restaurant‘s recent
renovations introduced new windows,
new carpeting, refreshed mahogany, a
new bar and a great art piece by local
artist George Vihos.
Menu specialties for a power breakfast
at Beverly Hills Grill include Jumbo
Lump Crab Cake Benedict with tomato
and Hollandaise sauce and housemade Corned Beef Hash topped with
poached eggs, Amish sharp cheddar and
scallions. A Wolferman’s English muffin
accompanies this dish and the omelet of
the day, which is served with fresh fruit.
The BHG BLT is another breakfast option,
consisting of hickory-smoked bacon,
scrambled eggs, avocado, sharp cheddar,
tomato and arugula on multi-grain toast
with fresh fruit.
Delicious breakfast choices at Bill’s
include Prime Rib Hash and Eggs, King
Crab Benedict with Maltaise sauce and
grilled asparagus, Egg White Frittata,
featuring basil, chevre, tomato and
arugula/avocado salad, and Whole Wheat
Oatmeal Pancakes with cranberry-apple
compote and orange-honey butter. The
hearty Bill’s Breakfast is two eggs, crispy
hash browns, choice of meat and an
English muffin. Steak and Eggs features a
petite filet mignon.
Despite the wonderful menus, many
of the guests choose to order the daily
chalkboard specials, giving “our chefs a
chance to show their creativity,” Volk
said.

Steve & Rocky's| Advertisement
Steve & Rocky's
Great food, quality service and reasonable prices.
Esther Allweiss Ingber Contributing Writer
hefs passionate about
using fresh, wholesome
ingredients in interesting
combinations have kept Steve
& Rocky’s in the Novi Town
Center Complex at the forefront of popular destination
restaurants between Detroit
and Ann Arbor. Gourmet magazine has called it “one of the
best restaurants in America.”
The delicious Americancontinental cuisine starts
with Chef Steve Allen, the
restaurant’s co-owner, who
also answers to the name
“Farmer Steve.” The city boy, born and
raised in Detroit, owns around 6 acres in
the Hartland area, where his pleasure is
raising, butchering and selling a variety
of free-range poultry and livestock —
including 350 freshly dressed turkeys for
his customers’ Thanksgiving dinner this
year.
Fresh organic produce from Allen’s
gardens is served at the Novi restaurant
and also Rocky’s of Northville, owned
by Allen’s business partner, Chef Chuck
(Rocky) Rachwitz. In season, Allen also
sells his heirloom tomatoes and other
vegetables to chefs working at places
like Henry Ford Museum and Livonia’s
Schoolcraft College. He sometimes judges
culinary competitions at Schoolcraft.
On Oct. 22, Oakland Community
College celebrated Allen and Rachwitz,
distinguished graduates of its culinary
arts program, at a sold-out Farm-to-Table
dinner event.
Explaining his purpose with Steve &
Rocky’s, Allen said, “If you grow a good
product, it’s reflected in what you’re
cooking.”
Restaurant general manager Duane T.
Brady added, “Our niche is: We do simple
food, done well. We offer quality service
and keep prices reasonable, without
breaking the bank.”
That ideal combination is responsible
for Steve & Rocky’s loyal following since
opening in January 1998.
“We’re still here, while other places
have gone and went,” Allen said.
The formerly funky, eclectic dining
room is more elegant these days, with
C

walls painted in dark pine green and
jewel colors — “a more grown-up look,”
Brady said.
Decor holdovers include the fish tank,
wine bottle display and extensive array
of decorative roosters. Smaller ones sit
on glass shelves separating the entryway
from the bar.
After complimentary hot, herbed
rolls, many start their meal with Steve &
Rocky’s signature Chef Milos Mushroom
Soup. The creamy broth loaded with
mushrooms was named for Allen’s
mentor, Certified Master Chef Milos
Cihelka. Following Chef Milos’ retirement
from the renowned Golden Mushroom
restaurant in Southfield, Allen spent five
years as the restaurant’s executive chef.
Other soups in rotation include butternut
squash, made with sour cream and
toasted almond garnish.
Salads are always a good bet. In
addition to House, Michigan Kale Salad
and Caesar’s, one specialty salad is
Martha’s Vineyard. It offers pecans, red
onions, dried tart cherries, blue cheese,
spinach and a sweet-and-sour vinaigrette.
Grilled salmon can be added for an
additional charge. Harvest Salad is curly
endive, field greens, goat cheese, Port
wine-poached pears, yucca crisps, roasted
butternut squash and pomegranate
brown butter vinaigrette.
Fresh fish preparations are emphasized,
such as lightly smoked and poached
salmon. The dish includes potato-celeriac
puree, vermouth sauce and Brussels
sprouts. Lake Perch Saute, the No. 1
seller, is rolled in paprika-seasoned flour
and plated with wilted spinach, Basmati
rice, toasted hazelnuts and shitake
mushrooms in a brown-butter
vinaigrette. Brady said Steve
& Rocky’s sells 100 pounds of
perch weekly, so that’s a great
choice.
Filet mignon is the most
popular of several aged
meat choices. The filet is
served with Cognac and black
peppercorn sauce, mashed
potatoes and crispy onions.
Sauteed beef tenderloin tips
and baked meatloaf also have
Cognac sauce, plus other
accompaniments.
Another favorite entree is
Chicken Scaloppini Oscar, which comes
with a light and tasty crab/shrimp cake
(made with no filler), Béarnaise sauce,
sauteed potatoes and seasonal vegetable.
A recent menu special was Asianinfluenced Five Spice Gulf Shrimp
Rice Bowl and Bay Scallops Saute,
including spicy tomato ragout, kale,
cherry tomatoes and farfalle pasta. The
daily quiche featured house-smoked
chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and shitake
mushrooms with a natural sauce, field
greens and red wine vinaigrette.
Save room for the tempting, housemade desserts served on a decorative
stone. Sous Chef Jeff Evans oversees
the pastry operation with its frequently
changing pies, cakes, cheesecakes and
more. The warm chocolate ganache cake
is one delightful choice.
Dining room manager Richard Cheaney
is part of Steve & Rocky’s winning
team, also comprised of attentive and
personable wait staff. Pianist Linda Carr
provides easy-listening music at dinner
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Also
worth mentioning are the half-off Stone
Menu of selected appetizers and drinks in
the bar during “Happy Hour,” from 3:306:30 p.m. weekdays.

Helping Forge New Financial Paths
Aaron Filipski {Contributing Writer
or many women involved in a divorce
or who are recently widowed, the challenge of navigating new financial landscapes can add undue stress and anxiety to an
already unpleasant circumstance.
Rebecca Abel, of the Integrated Financial
Solutions Group — a franchise of Ameriprise
Financial — understands this dynamic.
As a Certified Financial Planner for more
than 15 years, Abel has crafted much of her
practice around the unique needs of clients
going through life transitions and holds the
specialist designation of Certified Divorce
Financial Analyst — setting her apart from
many in her field.
Most importantly though, she offers
her clients unparalleled compassion and
understanding while helping them restructure
their finances.
“I take a holistic, high-touch approach
with my clients,” Abel said. “I give them the
tools necessary to make financial decisions
with confidence. Women are asked to make
important financial decisions with serious
short- and long-term consequences during
F
emotionally challenging times. I take them
by the hand and present them with clear,
understandable options.”
Abel graduated from the University of
Michigan with a degree in psychology. Late
in her academic career she also discovered
her interest in and aptitude for financial
management. The two disciplines influence
her hybrid approach to advising.
And it’s not only compassionate; it’s
also effective. Abel earned a 95 percent
satisfaction rating among clients, has been
named a 5-Star Wealth Manager by Hour
magazine, and was selected as “Best Financial
Planner” by readers of the Jewish News.
In 2012 she founded the nonprofit
Women’s Divorce Resource Center — an
organization with the mission of empowering
and educating women contemplating or
going through the divorce process by offering
educational opportunities and resources
through workshops related to the legal,
financial and emotional aspects of divorce.
Abel sits on the board of the Michigan
Inter-Professional Association on Marriage,
Divorce and the Family, is a member of the
Association of Divorce Financial Planners, the
Institute of Divorce Financial Analysts, and is
a lifetime member of Hadassah. In 2010 she
founded the Jewish Women’s Professional
Network.
In every case, Abel has proven herself
to be a capable,
compassionate,
professional, dedicated
to the financial wellbeing of her clients.

Meet Rose
Rose had a special relationship with her soon-to-be-married great-niece.
Attending the wedding was on her bucket list but she was afraid if she went
she would be a burden to her family. That’s when Professional Parent Care
stepped in to ensure Rose could watch her great-niece walk down the aisle.
A personal companion from PPC accompanied Rose on the plane, checked
her into her hotel and went to the wedding with her. The family got to enjoy
Rose’s presence without worry — knowing she was in good hands with her
own ‘personal valet.’ Rose had a great time celebrating the wedding. “At
Professional Parent Care, we want to enhance the lives of our clients,” said
President Sandy Linden. “We’ll go above and beyond to help our clients live
their lives to the fullest while providing the best care. That’s what we do.”

about the proper way to put on a bra, how to
care for their bras and which styles work best
with their wardrobes and activities.
“Customers leave with an education and
a comfortable, well-fitting bra in a size they
never imagined they were,” Aughton said.
Bra-vo offers a bra “wardrobe” that ranges
from basic T-shirt bras to sports bras to
strapless or other special occasion styles.
In addition, every Bra-vo staff member has
been thoroughly trained in swimwear fitting
and styling . A choice of 70 sizes and a range
of styles, colors and fabrics ensure a great fit
and a flattering look for the pool or beach.
Aughton also has a variety of options for
women who have had breast surgery, and she
enjoys helping customers find the right postsurgical solution for each situation.
“We like a challenge,” said Aughton, who
regularly visits New York, Paris and London to
bring back the latest styles and trends.
Quality is important to Aughton, and that
means well-crafted bras made from the finest
materials.
“We never sacrifice comfort or fit for
fashion,” said Aughton.
Bra-vo also includes a selection of
accessories: silicone pads for added shoulder
relief, removable cup enhancers to turn
any bra into an instant push-up style, strap
converters and more.
Aughton enjoys encouraging her customers
to venture outside
their comfort zone.
“Women who
never considered
wearing colors
were thrilled to
discover they could
wear a navy bra

she said. “We

at Bra-vo Intimates, the full-service
bra store with an unsurpassed selection to ensure the right fit and type of bra for
every customer and every occasion.
Consistently voted No. 1 by Hour Detroit,
the Detroit Jewish News, Channel 4 and
others, Bra-vo offers more than 160 bra sizes
from 20 different manufacturers, more than
any other store in Michigan.
Owner Rebecca Aughton and her team of
fitting experts spend the time necessary to
ensure each customer finds the perfect fit and
style for her body type and lifestyle.
“Many women fight with their bras,” said
Aughton, who estimates that 99 percent of
first-time customers come in wearing the
wrong bra size. “Once we find the right bra
in the right size, most women say they have
never had a bra that fit so well.”
Bra-vo customers learn how a properly
fitted bra can improve posture, make
clothes fit better, alleviate shoulder and back
discomfort, and enhance self-confidence.
Aughton believes in providing more than

Steven Lelli’s Inn on the Green| Advertisement
The Face Of Old-School Dining:
JN’s Pick For Best Italian Restaurant
Mark Zarkin carries on the Steven Lelli’s family tradition in Farmington Hills.
Esther Allweiss Ingber { Contributing Writer
nter Steven Lelli’s Inn on the Green
in Farmington Hills — named “Best
Italian Restaurant” on the JN’s 2015
Best of Michigan ballot — and it won’t
be long until you’re greeted by proprietor
Mark Zarkin. “My favorite part of the day
is going to every table and talking to each
guest,” he says. “That is priority No. 1.”
Zarkin opened the Farmington Hills
location overlooking Copper Creek Golf
Course in 2010 with his business partner
and lifelong friend Steven Lelli, whose
grandparents, Nerio and Irene Lelli, ran
their iconic Lelli’s restaurant on Woodward
at Bethune in Detroit for 60 years. Today’s
Steven Lelli’s serves the same authentic
Italian food and hospitality from that
restaurant’s glory days.
“I loved the original Lelli’s downtown,”
Zarkin says. “Growing up, Steven Lelli and
I were friends, and through the years I
would help out there on busy holidays,
working the floor or the pasta stations.”
Zarkin’s interest in food was sparked at
a young age, peeling potatoes for his Aunt
Shirley at Bloom’s Kosher Catering in Oak
Park. He worked for her on and off through
the years before opening his own pizza and
pasta shop in Troy after graduating Berkley
High School.
Through it all, Zarkin always retained
his interest in fine dining. “Growing up,
my parents took us to nice restaurants,”
he says. “I would watch the staff and the
management, taking mental notes in my
mind.”
However, after seven years, he left
the restaurant business to start a chain
of sundry shops. Eventually, Steven Lelli
approached him about launching the next
incarnation of Lelli’s and Zarkin jumped at
the chance.
Several longtime employees also came
to the new restaurant in Farmington Hills.
Some of the professional servers have
more than three decades with the Lelli’s
organization. “Busboy Louie,” 65, was hired
at age 15. Executive Chef Jeff Lyons is a
20-year employee.
Zarkin, who had grown up with Lelli’s,
took on the challenge with gusto.
“My role was to do everything it took to
open the restaurant,” he says. “Now my
role is to do everything it takes to run it.
I’m the guy who turns the key in the lock

every morning and the one who turns out
the lights each night.”
Zarkin handles everything from taking
reservations to food quality control. “My
first priority is taking care of the guests,”
he says. “I want my customers to have a
great experience and leave with the idea
that they can’t wait to come back.”
Old-school service like Zarkin’s is what
keeps customers coming back and his
belief that food is king. Steven Lelli’s Inn on
the Green — which celebrated five years in
November — is a haven for well-prepared,
tender steaks and chops, as well as other
staples of Italian and American cuisine.
“I like to quote Rodney Dangerfield in
the movie Back To School,” Zarkin says.
“He said, ‘Don’t worry, if the roast beef is
right, they’ll be back.”
Zarkin shows his dedication to the Lelli’s
tradition by coming to work at 5:30 a.m.
every other day to ensure the quality of
the famous soups, sauces and recipes.

vegetables, spinach and tiny pasta, and
Spaghetti Bolognese. Its exceptionally
meaty sauce comes from chopped prime
tenderloin. A house favorite is their prime
tenderloin meatballs. And their famous Zip
sauce, true to Steve Lelli’s grandparents’
original restaurant, adds unique flavor to
their perfectly cooked filet mignon, veal
and lamb chops.
Chateaubriand is another customer
favorite sliced tableside and cooked to
perfection. “We are one of only a few
restaurants that deboned Dover sole,
tableside,” he adds.
Bananas Foster and Berries or Cherries
Jubilee, flambéed tableside and served
over vanilla ice cream, or carrot cake —
the absolute best in the area — make for
the perfect ending to a memorable meal.
Zarkin is proud of having “award-winning
wines from around the world,” noting
that his is one of only 11 restaurants in
the country honored this year with Wine
Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence.
The restaurant received the publication’s
Award of Excellence in 2014 as well. You’ll
find many a famous name and photo on
the wine lockers that line the restaurant’s
entryway.
Zarkin also makes his own fresh fruitinfused vodka, bourbon and rock-and-rye
drinks. “We’re famous for our bourbon
and have one of the best Scotch lists in
the country,” he said. “No one else has
anything like it.”
Zarkin is passing on the tradition to his
son, who comes in from college a few
times a month to learn the business —
and the old-school service — at which he
excels.
“He will be the fourth generation to
carry on that tradition — for old and young
alike,” Zarkin says. “Old-school dining will
never go out of style.”

Maple Theater| Advertisement
Cultural Oasis
Maple Theater delights lovers of the silver screen with films and food.
hen it comes to the silver screen,
patrons around the region opt
for the Maple Theater where the
most interesting, edgy and culturally significant films have a comfortable showcase
enhanced by state-of-the-art film projection and sound on three separate screens.
Once more, its newly renovated bar and
kitchen allow people to talk movies with
friends and strangers even if they never
buy a ticket.
“This is an amazing place for newcomers
and diehard theater-goers. We work very
hard to provide good programming, to
get the films we think our crowd will like,”
said Ruth Daniels, managing partner.
“We constantly schedule alternative
programming, secret cinema, opera, Royal
Shakespeare series and Anime movies that
our crowd enjoys.”
The Maple Theater tops the Jewish
News “Best of Detroit” list again and again.
Daniels says it is about, “providing the
best entertainment experience available
and letting the public know you really care
about them and cater to them.”
“People in this area have a special
relationship with the Maple Theater, some
go back to their childhood, like me,” she
said. “I saw Grease six times here as a teen
and wound up running the place.”
Daniels took a hiatus to launch several
other theaters and came back in 2012 to
become an investment partner with Jon
and Lauren Goldstein and oversee a multimillion dollar renovation. The trio also
beefed up their reoccurring events.
Beyond the first run, edgy films
that define the theater’s taste and
sophistication, the Maple Theater offers
Secret Cinema on three Thursdays a
month. The first week is old Hollywood
flicks from the 1960s and earlier; the
second is an audience choice day and
the winner gets to host; the third is new
Hollywood, films from 1968 to present.
Celebrity hosts for these retro nights
include Elliot Wilhelm, curator of the
Detroit Film Theater, Oakland County
Film Commissioner Susan Stack and other
luminaries. Often 200 or more people fill
the seats for these special nights.
“We’ve referred to the Maple as a
cultural oasis in Bloomfield Township. The
owners are very open to showing films

that people who are discerning want to
see,” said former professor Jill FarberBramson, who is arranging the showing
of Suffragette, accompanied by a panel
discussion on feminism and voting rights.
Customers tell management how much
they appreciate the convivial atmosphere
and special incentives to return. Everyone
receives a punch card that racks up points
for purchases and leads to freebies. A
select group opts for the VIP Club with
single or couple memberships. It includes
tickets to special shows, club seats and free
popcorn, popped onsite in extra-virgin olive
oil or butter.
The most popular part of the Maple now
is its renovated kitchen, a project imagined
and produced by longtime restaurant
architects Ron and Roman, including an
overhead series of vintage-looking, blackand-white drawings that subtly direct
guests to different treats.
Patrons can choose a frizzled kosher dog
smothered in coleslaw, fresh baked duck
tortillas, a Cobb salad, center cut burger or
a salmon patty on a Brioche bun. A new,
circular bar lets conversations flow among
friends as people debate the merits of
Leonardo diCaprio vs. Humphrey Bogart or
play trivia games over craft beer and fine
wines.
“Think about it: You can park once, have

a great cup of coffee, see an outstanding
film and then have a wonderful meal.
Where else can you do all that?” asks
Daniels.
