School Calendar
It’s incredible how Mother Nature continues to tease us with this weather. One day
we are saturated in sunshine and balmy weather and in another we are running for
cover as the wind howls behind us and snow descends upon us.
April was a special month filled with events, the Gala d’art oratoire, Easter celebrations and of course, the annual Dance Competition.
In May, we celebrate and honour Mothers, their dedication, their vital and important
role that Mothers have in our lives; they are a major element of the essence of our
being, the cornerstones of the lives of our children and in turn in our own lives.
Wishing all of our Mothers an amazing Mother’s day.

The month of May appears to be full of exciting events both at the school and district level. Activities slated for May include the beginning of our PAT exams for
grade 9, Athletic league play and playoffs in Badminton and Softball and Track and
Field Day. If you would like to take in any of these activities please check for the
dates and times with your child or contact the school.
As we move into the final two months of school, with our day time getting longer,
outdoor sport commitments, children playing more outside and our thoughts turning to summer fun and holidays, our learning journey continues. It is important that
our students maintain a strong work ethic with their assignments and that they continue getting enough rest; it is truly an integral part in doing our best to achieve
well. Together we will celebrate a successful year.
Please pay close attention to the calendar, as many activities and school functions
are scheduled. Enjoy the sunshine and the freshness of Spring. Feel free to contact us at school if you have any question

Tip for the Month
Tip for the Month
Planning: The Secret to Fast Family Meals
By-pass fast food in favour of nutritious home-cooked meals! It's doable
with a little planning.
Microsoft
Begin by jotting down what you want to serve each night for one week.
Use your menu to guide your food purchase.
Finally, spend a few minutes each evening and prepare for the following night.
Take out meats to defrost in the refrigerator. Peel and cut up any vegetables you plan to enjoy.
These simple steps take the stress out of "rush hour" cooking and can help you get dinner on the
table in minutes.
School Activities
On Friday, May 13, 2011 there will be a freezy sale in the foyer at lunch. Each freezy will be $1.00
and
there will be a variety of flavours to choose from. All of the proceeds from the sale will go
- www.healthyalberta.ca
towards the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.
There are two walk/run events coming up in our city to help support the Stollery Children’s Hospital
Foundation. If you or a family member would like to participate, please contact the sponsored
companies for more information (see attached flyer).

however seating is limited so arrive early.
Staff members will be present, but not to supervise the event. Parents or Guardians

May 2010,
Christ is Risen, indeed He is Risen, Alleluia, Alleluia! May the peace and joy of the Risen
Christ be with you and your families this Easter.
As we begin the fifty days of the Easter season the Church in the English speaking world is
making preparations to begin using a revised English translation of the words we pray at
Mass.
We may ask why there is a need for a revised translation. For around forty years we have
celebrated Mass using the present English language translation that came to us shortly after
the close of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. Some of us may remember the Mass being
celebrated in Latin. For others the Mass as we celebrate it presently is the only Mass we
know. The English language Mass translation produced after the Second Vatican Council was
supposed to be revised within five years of its implementation with a newer translation that
was a more literal translation of the Mass from Latin into English. Well those five years have
turned into almost forty years. A new, revised translation has now been in preparation for
over ten years. The work has progressed steadily on this revised English language translation
with people from all over the world sharing their expertise.
The revised English translation is now ready for use. The Catholic Church in the English
speaking world will begin to use the revised Mass translation on the First Sunday of Advent,
November 27, 2011.
This is a wonderful opportunity for formation in the mystery of the Eucharist. The Catholic
Archdiocese of Edmonton will begin a period of formation workshops designed to deepen
our understanding of the Eucharist, and prepare us for the revised Mass translation.
This is an exciting time within our Catholic schools as well. Over the coming months there
will be different opportunities for our students, parents, and staff to come together to prepare for these changes. We are blessed within our Catholic community to share in a relationship of home, school, and parish, for the celebration of the Eucharist in our parishes and
schools.
XRichard W. Smith
Archbishop of Edmonton
Page 11
May 2011
Alleluia. Alleluia. “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” Alleluia! (Psalm 118)
Celebrating the great feast of Easter so late into our school year seems to be coinciding with the lateness of the arrival of
spring-like weather this year. It is a bit difficult to be emphasizing the resurrection themes of Jesus’ victory over death and
the new life that we received through our Baptism, when all around us there are very few signs and symbols of this new
growth - buds, greenness, tulips - that we usually use to symbolize the Easter theme in our schools.
During May, we have a wonderful opportunity to reflect on and ask the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God and the
model of perfect servantship. Mothers’ Day celebrations also give us a chance to honour our own mothers and thank those
who support us in that role.
On Wednesday, May 4th 2011 at 7:00 pm, Edmonton Catholic Schools will be hosting its 22nd Annual Celebration of the
Arts at the Jubilee Auditorium. I would like to thank all staff members who are part of organizing and preparing our students for their performances, and encourage you to join in this celebration of music, drama, dance and art. I believe that your
attendance will indeed “Awaken the Senses…Stir the Heart” in each of you. Please join our students and staff as they demonstrate their learning in the fine arts!
Typically in May, the Board of Trustees would be approving the Edmonton Catholic School District’s budget for the 20112012 school year. With the challenges in funding, the Minister of Education has moved the date for submission of the budget
to the end of June. As part of the District budget, every school will receive a 0.6 certificated staff FTE (Learning Coach) to
support inclusive education in our District and to enhance the capacity of schools to address diverse learning needs. Professional development for 2011-2012 will include broad-based strategies and organization for instruction that enhance learning
for ALL students within an inclusive setting.
Some examples of Edmonton Catholic School District’s proposed changes to programming for next year include:
Many Early Learning program expansions - 100 Voices, Little Bethlehem, Pre-school Outreach
Year Round schooling expanded to include 2 more sites
Several expansions in Bilingual, and Language and Cultural programs
Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin Cree Language and Culture at 4 school sites
Please visit http://www.ecsd.net/programs/pdf/new_expanded_programs.pdf for complete information regarding programming additions and changes for the 2011-2012 school year.
Near the middle of the month, students in Grades 3, 6 and 9 will be writing one part of their Achievement Exams in language
arts and math. Good luck to these students.
“All nations now will share my joy, for gifts God has outpoured.
This lowly one has been made great, I magnify the Lord.”
(from the Canticle of Mary)
May God bless all mothers as we celebrate their special day on May 8!
Sincerely,
Joan Carr,
