90’s REVIVAL
FRAGRANCE CATEGORIES WITHIN
THIS TREND:
A nod to the culture of the 90s, this story is an expression of grunge aesthetic
and Millennials’ never-ending nostalgia for this era. From the resurgence of
iconic 90s television shows to the influx of models sporting mini buns and
crop tops, the 90s have never looked better.
Fragrances combine unusual elements together, either exuding a cool metallic effect in
Tough, rebellious and ‘90s-inspired beauty looks include the I-dare-you-to-say-somethingto-me obvious lip liner, sticker embellished face and body shimmer. From splatter
paint nail art to undone dreadlocks, the models at the Nicole Miller Spring 2016 show
epitomized the look of this story. Additional examples on the runway ranged from the
chopped off fringe at Baja East to the wet waves at Leanne Marshall.
We looked to icons of this decade to further inspire us. Between the rise of the supermodel
to bad-girl rockers such as Gwen Stefani and Courtney Love, nobody does glamour the
way the original beauty icons of the 1990s did.

THIS TREND:
Coastline looks to the beauty of seaside minimalism and the rugged natural
landscapes of Big Sur and Monterey. Redefining the idea of luxury, this story
takes an understated approach to beauty. While the surf aesthetic has been
present for several seasons, we’re noticing a distinct shift in the look and feel.
Glistening wet sand provides inspiration for sun-kissed hair and illuminated skin.
Designers such as Milly and Altuzarra took an elevated approach to coastal culture on the
Spring 2016 runway, with slicked back hair and a fresh-faced complexion. Also understated,
nails are primarily naked or nude, with the appearance of seaside-inspired ombre.
Looking to the power of the sea, innovative formulas have found a way to bottle the regenerative powers of the sea. We look to ingredients ranging from brown seaweed, black pearl,
and starfish extract. Comprised of water, protein, collagen and calcium – starfish extract is
an emerging ingredient with immense hydrating and rejuvenating properties. Additional
ingredients include aloe juice, caviar, and volcanic sand.

THIS TREND:
Nu Mix examines the experimental shift in design that focuses on the
unexpected. From skewed shapes to injections of randomness, this story
explores the off-kilter with a fun, energetic burst of flavor. A palette of what
was once defined as unmixable colors ranging from plastic pink to acid green
and mustard yellow offer a brash contrast to tried and true tones of spring.
Designers such as Libertine and Max Mara incorporated this unexpected mélange of
exploration on the Spring 2016 runway. From the iridescent plastic embellished eyelids at
Lie Sand Bong to the mixed print nail art at Libertine, designers pulled out all of the tricks
to created show-stopping styles.
The incorporation of synthetic or artificial materials in this story expands from latexinspired fragrances to glass embellished nail art. We continue to look at advances in
technology and 3D printing to guide this story. Forgoing the norm, Nu Mix makes the
impossible, possible, causing a cacophony of visual dissonance.

is a peaceful rebellion against the rise of bourgeois rigidities. A spiritual story
at its core, Soul Power merges a folk aesthetic with artistic influences that
adhere to bohemian values.
Designers such as Daks and Mara Hoffman embraced the boho-luxe vibe this season and
incorporated aspects of this free spirit sensibility into their collections. Although this story
heavily embraces the natural, fresh-face look, we see a continuation of embellished accents
ranging from gilded hair tattoos to strategically placed face stickers and stamps.
