The Great Vallejo Ducky Derby
T
11th Annual Ducky Derby
Delivers Many Winners
he 11th Annual Great
Vallejo Ducky Derby once
again drew hundreds to the
waterfront on a bright and sunny
July 4th afternoon. The frolicking
faux fowl returned to the Straits
of Mare Island to the delight of a
boisterous crowd of children and
adults. As the crush of yellow
“quackers” jockeyed for
position, anxious ticket
holders cheered on the
ducks, hoping that
they held the winning
number of the strongest and swiftest.
The lucky prize
winners were: Grand
Prize Winner George
Moses of Suisun City,
who won a brand new
2007 Chevy Aveo from Team Superstores; Grand Prize Winner Jan
Mitchell of Carmichael, who won
a 2007 Harley-Davidson Sportster
883 motorcycle from HarleyDavidson/Buell of Vallejo; Don
Bragg of Vallejo, who won third
prize, a $2,500 savings account
from US Bank; George Oninski
of Vallejo, who won fourth prize,
a Six Flags Discovery Kingdom
Experience for Four; and Maria
Alvord of El Sobrante, who won
fifth prize, a $1,000 Shopping
Spree at Best Buy Vallejo
Everyone who purchased Ducky Derby
tickets, sold Ducky
Derby tickets, and/or
helped organize the
Great Vallejo Ducky
Derby event were
winners as well. That
is because the Vallejo
Rotary Club and the
Vallejo Chamber of Commerce raised over $43,000 in their
efforts to provide dictionaries
for every third-grade student in
Vallejo. And that means that over
1,800 children and their families
are the most important winners of
all! 

New Alarm Ordinance Will
Impact Businesses & Residents
T
he security industry is warning Vallejo businesses and
residents to take the new city
alarm ordinance seriously. Police
Chief Robert Nichelini, says he
intends to give the new ordinance
one year to reduce dispatches. If
businesses and residents continue
to abuse their security systems
and dispatches remain high, police
may stop responding to most
alarms.
“Less than one percent of our
police dispatches are for legitimate crimes,” said Rick Wells,
President and CEO of the Vallejo
Chamber of Commerce. “Most of
the time, police are responding to
burglar alarms that have been set
off accidentally.”
Besides encouraging alarm
owners to use their equipment
responsibly, the new ordinance
will establish several procedures
aimed at reducing unnecessary
dispatches. One new requirement
is the use of security equipment
that meets the American National
Standard Institute and Security Industry Association Control Panel
Standards (CP-01). Another is
the use of Enhanced Call Verification (ECV), a procedure in which
alarm monitoring companies call
two phone numbers to verify an
alarm before dispatching police.

Bill Powell, Vallejo PD Dispatch
Supervisor, at 648-4321. 

Report from President and CEO Rick Wells
Summer Reading Inspires, Encourages, and Saves Time
A
s a firm
believer in
life-long
learning I feel we
can all benefit from
the experiences and
wisdom of others
who have gone
before us. As summer’s end draws
nearer I thought I would take this
opportunity to share some end-ofsummer reading options that cover
topics such as success in business,
community politics, and sustainability.
Some of my recent reads
include:
• King of Clubs - Robert Dedman
ClubCorp founder and CEO
provides testament to the benefits
of good ol’ fashioned hard-work.
He thrived by creating win-win
opportunities and meaningful
personal & professional relationships. Dedman offers great tips for
making employees feel part of the
bigger picture. He also gave over
$100 million to charity.
• Gently Down the Stream – Matt
Weinstein & Luke Barber
Lighthearted and simple take
on success in all aspects of life.
If you know the song Row, row,
row your boat you can remember
their keys to achievement. This is
a short read that will entertain and
inspire. Weinstein and Barber also
provide some great ideas about
having fun in the workplace.
• Sidewalk Strategies - Larry
Tramutola
Bay Area political consultant shares his experiences in
Grassroots organizing. Tramutola
offers an inside look at the steps
to succeed in organizing people
for better communities. He leads
Strategy #3 with one of my favorite quotes from Thomas Jefferson:
“We in America do not have government by the majority; we have
government by the majority who
participate.”
Books I am planning to finish
before the summer ends:
• Cradle to Cradle – William McDonough & Michael Braungart
The authors bring the perspective of architecture and chemistry
in order to offer a compelling analysis of the human manufacturing
model vs. nature as the model for
making things. They also evaluate
the difference between efficiency
vs. effectiveness. Thanks JAJ!
• Getting Things Done – David
Allen
This book comes highly rec-
ommended by educators and several of my colleagues. Upon first
glance this book promises to give
you the tools and techniques to get
your in-box empty and to feel fine
about what you’re not doing.
Get Informed at the 2007
Candidates Forum
As you all are aware, one of
the most important elections in
Vallejo’s history is coming up
this November, when we elect
a new mayor and three new city
council members. Your Chamber,
along with the other members of
the Vallejo Business Alliance, the
Solano Association of Realtors,
and of all the labor organizations
that comprise United Workers for
Local Government, are presenting the 2007 Mayor/City Council
Candidates Forum on August 22nd
at Rizza Auditorium. This will
be one of the few times that you
will be able to see and hear all the
candidates present their views on
critical issues of importance to the
business community. We hope that
you all will be able to attend.
Everything Turned Out
Just Ducky
Special thanks to all of our
sponsors and volunteers for making the 2007 Great Vallejo Ducky
Derby the most successful in history. Thanks to your efforts, every

Sutter Solano Cancer Center
Earns Accreditation
utter Solano Cancer Center has earned a three-year
accreditation with commendation from the Commission on
Cancer of the American College
of Surgeons (ACOS). ACOS approval is given to centers that have
voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality
cancer care and undergo regular
evaluations and reviews of their
performance.
Only one in four hospitals
earn the prestigious endorsement
from ACOS, and 80 percent of all
newly diagnosed cancer patients
are treated at accredited centers.
To gain ACOS endorsement,
Sutter Solano Cancer Center was
subject to a rigorous evaluation
process.
“It is unusual for such a new
cancer center to receive commendation from the American College
of Surgeons,” says Janice Hoss,
R.N., director of cancer services at
Sutter Solano Cancer Center. “The
accreditation not only validates all
the hard work of our outstanding
team to provide the ultimate in
patient care, but also confirms for
patients that the best cancer care is
right here in Solano County.”
Hoss says that having an
ACOS approved program dem-
onstrates Sutter Solano Cancer
Center’s commitment to providing
patients with high quality, comprehensive cancer care, including
a multi-specialty team approach
to best treatment options; access
to cancer-related information,
education and support, and a
cancer registry and data collection
system to improve cancer care at
the national, state and local level.
