Speaking of gifts, a pretty new tie-top willow fruit
basket caught my eye. Wicker strands are gathered up
to contain the fruit, and no plastic wrapping is used.
There are eight pieces of fruit, two each of red apples,
pears, oranges and bananas and a cluster of grapes on
top... easy to see what’s inside. A raffia bow tops it off,
all for $10. A great grab-and-go item from the Produce
Department (we do not ship this basket). Have a

Sweets first. This Italian dessert is simply scrumptious.
Watching 13 people carefully make it in our Bakeshop
(right behind my office) made me appreciate it all the
more. It starts with evenly slicing vanilla cake into three
layers. A spray of syrup made with real Bacardi rum
is applied to the first layer, then rum paste-enhanced
vanilla custard is applied and smoothed; then another
layer of cake, topped with chocolate custard, followed
by the top layer. It’s blast-chilled, then off to the store
for garnishing with whipped cream, chocolate ganache,
and toasted almond bits. And let me tell you, there’s no
question about it being flavored with rum… although we
promise you won’t be proofed at checkout. This creation
was six months in development starting with our Master
Pastry Chef and his artisan helper but with extensive
involvement by engineers, mechanics, production
managers, workers and quality assurance to craft the
customized equipment and production process. A
recent customer comment: “... I hope you continue to
make it; I couldn’t have any other.” There are two sizes:
either could make a delicious hostess gift.
