The appeal of organics to our customers continues to
grow…double digit growth for the last few years. Our
commitment then is to offer great-tasting organic
choices at consistent low prices. More organic products
are on the Summer List of prices locked-in from April 7
to August 24. Almost all of them are Wegmans brand:
three of them are fresh produce (Organic Spring Mix,
16 oz., Organic Baby Spinach, 11 oz., Organic Spinach
and Field Mix, 11 oz). One is organic frozen steamable
vegetables, 12 oz. Others are organic lemonade, 64
oz., ketchup, 20 oz. and …and finally, frozen waffles,
including organic, low-fat, and gluten-free, too (my
favorite is the multi-grain).

What we value about organic products is that they are
produced in a sustainable way and without artificial
fertilizers or artificial pesticides. They build more fertile
soil, and protect water and air quality. They are free
of artificial additives, animals are not treated with
antibiotics or growth hormones, and they are free of
genetically engineered ingredients (GMOs).

Each time one of our seasonal lists of price freeze items
comes out, customers tell us they like the help with
budgeting and meal planning, and the simplicity and
relevance of products that are so appropriate for the
time of year. Also, some customers pleaded with us to
include more organic products, because they’re trying
to eat healthier and they know there’s still a price gap
between conventional and organic in most products.
The gap is definitely narrowing as supply grows, but
demand is growing faster. Adding some organics to
our latest list is our way of answering that customer
request to provide consistent low prices on this
important category.
