2MVA Package sub-stations for British Telecom
By Damien Kane, Kane Engineering Ltd.
Kane Engineering, a CUBIC partner,
has recently completed a major LV
switchgear project for BT Northern
Ireland at its Belfast Telephone House
Data Centre.
The project comprised two HV/LV
package sub-stations, Form 4 type 7,
each with 3200 A mains and generator
ACB incomers on each panel, with
a synchronising generator and up to
seven ACB outgoers on each panel,
serving critical equipment within the
data centre.
All components are made as ABB
draw-out pattern ACBs. Kane Engineering also supplied and installed
the 2MVA cast resin transformers,
close-coupled to each of the form 4
CUBIC panels.
Apart from the two sub-stations, Kane
also supplied two 800A Form 4 type
2 sub switchboards serving primary
and secondary PDU supplies and two
630A Form 2 type 2 sub switchboards
with auto source changeover MCCBs
serving cooling condenser units in the
data rooms.

Finally, four 250 A rated power distribution units with inputs fed via Riello
static transfer switches and individual
branch circuit monitoring for outgoing
ways.
As a special feature to the project,
it was necessary to create a new
electrical switchboard room on the 7th
floor of the BT building in order to be
able to serve the new data centre a
floor below.
Moreover, all items of equipment
including the 5,000 kg cast resin
transformers had to be lifted by
crane to the roof of the building as
the existing goods lift only reached
the 6th floor.
