Published monthly by Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple 1100 Shriners Parkway Altoona, Iowa 5009-2117 Hello and happy April! Boy oh boy! We’ve made it through another March here at Za-Ga-Zig! Wow! St. Patty’s Day, the Circus, and Easter all in one month. It has been a busy one. I’d like to thank everyone who helped at the Circus this year. It truly is a team effort that is made possible by practicing that old saying that goes: “many hands make light work”. Thank you to every Noble, Noble’s Lady, Noble’s family member, DeMolay, Rainbow girl and anyone else I have forgotten. Za-Ga-Zig and I truly appreciate your efforts to pull together as a team to make the event a success for our Temple. Great Job! Lady Teresa and I hope you all had a happy Easter and got to spend some time with family and/or those special to you to celebrate that wonderful event. Spring Ceremonial is coming up! We’ll be coming together on the forth Saturday of April on the 23rd , and we will be honoring Noble Dan Baker who has served Za-Ga-Zig for years and is currently on the Appointed Divan serving as an Area Coordinator helping Shriners in his area stay connected with the Temple. It will be a day to celebrate bringing Brother Master Masons into our Fraternity of Shriners International making them Nobles and at the same time thanking Dan for his time and efforts that he and his Lady Deb have given to Za-Ga-Zig. Please join us on that day and bring a Brother Master Mason who you would like to share our fraternity with by making him a Shriner. Initiation for new Shriners is $255. I believe there are still a few spots left on the bus for the Ladies day trip on the 23rd that will be happening while we make Shriners here at the Temple. The ladies will be going to Summerset Winery in Indianola for a “515 Wine with Design” event (yum). If you would like to go, please visit online 515winewithdesign.com to buy your supplies for the April 23rd Stargazer Lily Door Banner event. You will still need to call or email the Za-Ga-Zig office to reserve your spot on the trip though. It’s going to be a fun April for Za-Ga-Zig Shriners and Ladies. Teresa and I hope to see you enjoying yourself at a Shrine event soon. And remember, “that while you are not totally responsible for what does and doesn’t happen to you, you are responsible for how you respond to what happens to you.” I’m not sure who said that, but I like it. Have a great month! Fraternally yours, Steve Hall, Potentate Members please send change of address to the Shrine Temple as soon as you know your new domicile. Antique Tractor Club News By Paul Freeman The Antique Tractor Club wishes to thank those who came out in support of our annual Pork Loin Dinner. Personally, I thought it was one of our best meals ever. I think you would agree. Here we are in April already. The circus is in the books, several unit and clubs have had successful fundraisers with a few more are on the way and Spring Ceremonial is Saturday, April 23. Get out and support these Unit and Club fundraisers and the Spring Ceremonial to welcome our new brothers to Shrinedom. Right now those of us who parade are polishing, cleaning and tuning up our rides. It won’t be long before every weekend through fall is filled with a town celebration, festival or jamboree. Remember that our FEETPRINTS editor is always looking for photos from these parades. If you happen to be at a parade, snap some photos and send them to him with a brief description. This cannot be said enough. Support your Temple functions and your Unit and Club events. New Unit Idea Segways! ATTENTION UNITS & CLUBS Oriental Band Update Well…It has been a long time since we have written anything in our beloved Feet Print. Everyone waits anxiously to read the newest edition to learn on the new events and fundraisers each Unit and Club is going to do in the next few months. Well, the Oriental Band has not done a good job but from now on we will do better. We have been busy tuning out instruments to get ready to play, one for our great Shrine Circus but two to get ready for Parades. Thanks to our members up in Marshalltown we have a float ready to go that just needs a few finishing touches and we will be ready to play for some Parades. We have a member of our Unit getting ready to get some time set aside so we can learn new and practice old routines so we can get ready to play for everyone on Parades. If anyone knows how to read sheet music and is interested in playing in our band. Please come to one of our meetings, the third Thursday of each month at 6pm as see how much fun we have. If you can’t read music and would love to join come to the meeting as well. (On a side note, we don’t know how to read sheet music at all.) Also with Parades and such, we are also getting ready to perform another Mandarin Degree sometime this Spring. All details are being hashed out but we get everyone informed and posted on when and where everyone and meet the Mandarin. It is a good time and everyone has fun, but to meet the Mandarin is something special. On Monday, March 7th, Potentate Steve Hall and Past Potentate Dan Willson traveled to Granger to award the second grade winner Genevieve Davidson her bike. Wednesday the ninth, Dan Willson, P.P., and Dave Wurster traveled to Corning, Iowa to award Emma Devore, a fourth grader, her bike. Her Parents Mark and Brenda were in attendance. While in Corning we met with Hospital Child Desirae Tacner. After Corning we traveled on to Atlantic, Iowa to present the fifth grade winner, Heather Tincel, her bike. She was also the overall winner of the Coloring Contest and had her drawing printed on the cover of the Circus Program. Heather’s mom and grandma were there to see the award. Thursday brought Dan and Dave to Chariton, Iowa, where we had two winners. Jerry Adcock informed us that in the past twenty years, Chariton has had thirty bikes awarded to their schools, which is a testament to the great teachers in that school system. At Van Allen Elementry School, Diana Zinchenko won the third grade contest. Her mom and Dad, Olga and Yuriy had to work, so big sis Natalya was there to see her little sister get the new bike. At Columbus Elementry, first grade Miah Milledge won the bike, her mother Sally was there to see the award. On Friday, kindergartner, Madison Shoemaker was awarded her bike. Her mom and dad, Melissa and Anton were present as were a contingent of FezB members. Dan Willson, P.P. and John Miller, Jr., P.P. made the presentation. It is great to see the kids excitement at the prospect of getting free tickets to the Circus. Hopefully a lot of parent will accompany them. Sportsman‘s Unit By Paul Freeman Considering that I had to have this article in for print prior to the event, I am extremely confident that the Greeter‘s / Sportsman‘s Units Fish Fry was a success. It is our desire to help bring this dinner back to the Shrine year after year. Both the Greeters and the Sportsman‘s Units want to thank all of you who came out in support of our endeavor. So what‘s next? We are not sure. Perhaps a few fishing outings and discussion of a trap and skeet shoot have been brought up. Whatever we decide, I can assure you that this Unit will be active and present within Za-Ga-Zig. Want to be a part of the fun? Only $12.00 a year for dues and no uniforms to buy. We meet on the 4th Wednesday of the month at the Shrine Temple. Our meetings start at 6:30 and we have been known on occasion to have some wild game or fried fish to munch on beforehand. You can’t say there isn’t anything to do at the Shrine Temple, just look at the calendar, and see all of the April, and early May dinners on Friday night! Plus there are tons of other activities in April like the Ladies Auxiliary Spring Craft Sale, Zig Zagger breakfast, YOSHI Whiskey & Wine, SPRING CEREMONIAL with the ladies bus trip, and the Drifters have a Magic Show to end out the month. So come on out and enjoy your Shrine Temple, and support the Units, and Clubs. Mark your calendar for April 29th to attend a Fiesta! The Trike annual Taco Dinner will be held that night, and we hope to see everyone there. We will also be starting to sell our raffle tickets to the Wheelie Cooler full of whiskey, and other beverages. We will once again hold the drawing at the hospitality following the Madrid parade. So stop out 4/29, enjoy the great tacos, $2 margarita’s, fellowship, and purchase tickets for the raffle at $1 each or 6 for $5. Up next is the Nobility Ball on the 14th of May, and then parade season! We are tuning up our trikes, and making sure they are ready for the start of the season. Our Unit gets excited when spring returns, because parading in the various small towns, and showing our pride by supporting the Shrine and our Temple is the best feeling ever. Whether you are in a parade Unit or not, stop by one of the parades to see what it’s all about, and enjoy the towns, along with their hospitality. If you are in a parade Unit, then we hope to see you attending the parades. If you would like to learn more about our Unit, bring your Lady and stop by our meeting, on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Shrine Temple. We hope you enjoy all of the upcoming activities, and we’ll see you there. R.
