EDITORIAL | OHTV is changing. After four years of dedicated service, our strapline 'It’s All Good' is being retired with full honours, 21-gun salute, gold medal and
a healthy pension! When we first started, it perfectly reflected our outlook and attitude to life. Young. Positive. Feel-good. Four years later, we are still all that
but also more - OHTV, OH Africa, OH Films, OH Card, OHBoX, OH Creative and now 2gether. After the multi-award winning end to 2011 we wanted to have a
brand signature that reflects our position and vision as a global media network focused on connecting people around the world to the black experience in all its
complex and diverse glory via our content, our products and services. So we are saying bye bye to 'It’s All Good' and replacing three little words with… three little
words: 'Bringing Us Together'. For us OHTV is all about making connections. Bringing people together. Nations together. Bringing the diaspora together. Channels
together. Bringing countries together. Brands together. Believers together. Bringing ideas and content together. Bringing families together. Connection and a sense
of togetherness are at the heart of everything we do. Which brings us neatly to this magazine, 2gether. It is an eclectic mix of entertainment, culture, politics,
faith and ideas, aimed at a smart, modern, international and culturally diverse audience. In this issue we celebrate Enoch Adeboye's 70th birthday, cover Usain Bolt
and Omotola's career, talk about the new soap, The Wild, and sift through the black power list. Don’t miss out on a chance to win business class flights to Africa by
downloading the OHBoX app. Let’s get 2gether! Email us at [email protected].

The Man, the Vision, the Destiny
The man
The RCCG General Overseer turned 70 on 2nd
March 2012. Joe Onwuchekwa looks at the life
of one of the most influential Christian leaders
in the world.
Enoch’s journey began in extreme poverty and obscurity seventy
years ago in the South Western region of Nigeria. He humorously
says his family was so poor that even the poor called them poor!
He never owned a pair of shoes until he was eighteen. What he did
possess though was focus, a brilliant mind, and a determination to
succeed.
Refusing to let poverty frustrate his ambitions, he pursued academic
achievements, showing an early aptitude for mathematics which he
studied up to doctorate level. Though born into a Christian home,
Enoch had only vague knowledge of God. That was until 1973 when
he was invited to a church.
“I drifted away from church until I had a little problem that defied
all solutions, and then someone invited me to the Redeemed
Christian Church of God (RCCG). I came expecting the pastor
would just pray and my problems would go away, but instead he
said I would have to give my life to Jesus Christ first. So of course I
resisted for a while but eventually I surrendered and gave my life to
Jesus Christ and my problems disappeared.”
At the time RCCG was led by its founder Josiah Akindayomi, an
illiterate but visionary leader who named Enoch as his successor
and upon his death in 1981 Enoch took over the leadership of
RCCG.
“Of course I didn’t want to have anything to do with working
fulltime for Christ. I preferred the way I was doing it – teaching
at the university, preaching the gospel – because that allowed me
more or less to be my own master. But then when the time came,
I discovered that I might lack some things but I have a joy that
money can’t buy.”
That was over thirty years ago, and since then he has presided over
the phenomenal growth of the RCCG which has grown from about
forty local church branches to over twenty thousand globally. He
says,
“You feel fulfilled. You are being used by God to meet the needs of
so many people at a time which is probably one of the greatest joys
of being a pastor. In the university, yes, you are influencing lives,
teaching them – moulding them – but they are very few in number.
I think the largest number of students I had in one class must be
less than hundred. Now to see you could influence over a million
people at a time can be very exciting.”
Whilst his journey is characterised by growth and a process of
change his message remains the same, encouraging millions
worldwide to put their faith in God who will come to their
assistance today. He says,
“We pray for the sick, but we also pray for their prosperity, for their
overcoming of evil forces and so on. While we have to worry about
heaven, there are some things God could do for us in the here and
now.”

Voted in 2008 by Newsweek as one of the world’s fifty most
influential people, Pastor Enoch Adeboye is the leader of a 5 million
member congregation and the overseer of 20,000 church branches
spread across 140 countries. Yet, many fondly call him ‘Daddy GO.’
He is an adviser to presidents and his life and message have inspired

Enoch is not daunted by the enormity of the challenge. He says,
“I believe the gospel is for all people. But I believe it is even more for
the masses and majority of the masses. If you are going to reach for
them you have to be at their level. If they see in you someone they
can relate to it’ll be easier for them to listen, to hear from you. But
not just that – the so-called high and mighty – if you get close to
them, you will know that underneath the beautiful dresses they’re
human: presidents, heads of states, CEOs. They all still get tired,
all feel pain. So if you go to the basics you will reach everyone,
because in every man there is that basic need.”

“The Wild is unlike anything that has been produced for South
African television before,” Theo Erasmus, Director, M-Net General
Entertainment says. In terms of logistics, we have learnt many
valuable lessons on how to turn such an outdoor venture, which is
dependent on the elements of nature, into a well-oiled machine.”
Shona Ferguson, who plays the role of the love-to-hate character,
Itumeleng Tladi, says, “I’m honoured to be part of such an unusual
production like The Wild. It amazes me how we manage to shoot a
daily soap on location.”
In Episode 1, aired in May on OHTV, Dinaledi Lodge prepares for
a banquet to celebrate the concession agreement but everyone's
world is thrown into crisis when Tiro threatens to sell the land.
Popular with guest stars
Putla Sehlapelo, better known to The Wild’s audience as Tiro Lebone
says, “Being on The Wild has been like test driving a car. We all know
what it feels like to finally drive your dream car and that is how
I feel about working on The Wild. It feels like I have just bought
myself that car.”
The Wild has proved popular with guest stars including Sindi Nene
And Tarina Patel.
Sindi Nene, a runner-up for 2010 in South African Idols, will make
an appearance on The Wild. She plays herself and gets invited by
Marang to perform at a function at Dinaledi Lodge for the rich and
famous. Marang enlists Lelo to help with the function and together
they manage to get the talented Sindi Nene to perform for the
guests.
Connie Ferguson, who plays matriarch Marang Lebone says, “After
being in the industry for as long as I have been, being on The Wild
is like a breath of fresh air. It pushes me to the limits and allows
me to enjoy life and acting all over again. I feel like a kid in a candy
store, excited and looking forward to tasting all the sweets available
to me.”

Don Omope, an international film critic and British
Film Institute’ advisory committee member lists
his picks from the most pioneering works within
the sprouting world of African filmmaking.
It’s hard to imagine that filmmaking was banned across Africa
before formal independence, given the huge number of films made
on the continent today! I spend a lot of my time watching African
cinema. When I say cinema I don’t mean Nollywood or films from
such video tradition. Don’t get me wrong; I am not suggesting
there’s anything wrong with Nollywood. Nollywood is in fact
one of the greatest film phenomena in modern global cinema.
My comments merely allude to the existence of another form of
filmmaking that exists in Africa, an advanced stage of filmmaking
imbued in the modes and nodes of cinema.
followed by Daratt in 2006. However, it was A Screaming Man which
won the Jury Prize at the Cannes film festival in 2010 that firmly
sealed Haroun’s place in the Hall of Fame. A Screaming Man is a
story about a proud, loving father who finds himself demoted in his
job and forced to work under his son. It is a powerful story of the
fall of a man and the choices he makes.
Over the years I have seen the emergence of a new crop of African
film directors whom through their films create profound cinematic
experiences that hold their own against the best of cinema from
around the world.
I have trawled through the plethora of film experiences that come
from Africa, from the big budget South African films, the vibrant and
unique Nollywood films in Nigeria, to the avant-garde films popular
in French-speaking Africa, and films made in lesser known African
countries and those from the Diaspora.
Second on my list is the director of the hugely acclaimed Restless
City, Andrew Dosunmu. Many have commented on Restless City as
one of the most beautifully shot films to come out of Africa for a
very long time. Cinematographically speaking, it is a piece of rare
art.
First on my list is the Chadian film director Mahamat Saleh Haroun.
Every young African film director interested in making cinematic
films true to Africa and hoping to achieve international critical
acclaim needs to pay attention to his films. In 2002, Haroun
made his first feature film, the critically acclaimed Abouna. It was
The New York based Nigerian director has quickly established
himself as a filmmaker’s filmmaker. His next film Ma’ George
coming out in 2013 is a Yoruba language film set on the streets of
New York featuring Angelique Kidjo among many others.
Congolese filmmaker Djo Munga is next on my list with his 2010
debut feature film Viva Riva! This was the most talked about film of
2010/2011. It is a mix between Scarface and Goodfellas but African
style! Set on the streets of Kinshasa in Congo, it is beautifully shot,
directed, and acted, with full of characters and action. It is a true
gangster film in every sense of the word. What sets Djo Munga
apart as a director is his willingness to tell stories most African film
directors would be scared of touching.
Third is my favourite female African director Wanuri Kahiu. Based
in Nairobi, Kahiu is an exceptional filmmaker. Her first film From
a Whisper, a powerful drama about two families affected by the
bombing of the American embassy in Nairobi in 1998, won five
awards at the African Movie Academy Awards. Her next film Pumzi
was Kenya’s first sci-fi film. It is a fantastic piece of technical
moviemaking. The film excelled in all the top film festivals around

You've been on shows like ITV's Loose Women and Inside Out. How
does Real Talk differ from them?
What do you enjoy most about hosting such a successful show?
There are so many! I have really enjoyed discovering the
talent. There are some really gifted black men and women
out there.
Who has been your most memorable guest panelist?
Real Talk is back for a third season. What can we expect?
There have been some amazing guests, including David
Neita , a lawyer and poet, and the comedian Miss London.
For me, the best show has to be ‘Who Wins Black Britain's
Vote’ in April 2012, with the Mayor of London Boris Johnson
in the panel.
Not only do we have the big guests; we're also tackling the big
issues! We've had a real confidence boost. The first two seasons
were crowd pleasers. This season we're not afraid to ask real hardhitting questions.
Speaking of the previous seasons, what has been your favourite
topic?

MARCIA DIXON TRACKS THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF MUYIWA, UK’S LEADING GOSPEL ARTIST.
Muyiwa Olarewaju burst onto the gospel scene in 2002 with
Riversongz and their debut album Restoration. Since then he
has released four more albums and become one of the UK’s most
successful black Christian artists.
He is the first black Brit to appear on BET’s popular Celebration of
Gospel show. He is a presenter of Turning Point, a magazine show
broadcast by CBN with an international audience of seventy million.
He presents two shows, six times a week, on the commercial UK
Christian station Premier Radio, and he is also the station director
of Premier Gospel. He has performed at two of Nigeria’s biggest
Christian events: the congress of the Redeemed Christian Church of
God which attracts millions and ‘The Experience’ which gets crowds
of half a million. He even presents Sounds of Africa for Lufthansa
Airlines!
Despite his busy work life Muyiwa still finds time to enjoy family
life with his wife Lola, a fitness trainer and their two sons aged two
and four.
“There are five pillars we live by in my home,” he says. “Gratitude
is one of them. Sobriety is another one. My children must have a
clear sense of the fear of God. They must have a willingness to serve
and they must be generous.” Muyiwa wants his sons to become
responsible and hard-working, and wants to leave them a legacy of
godly values and material wealth.
Muyiwa believes God and hard work are behind his success. He
believes God uses people as channels to confer blessings and has
made building relationships a priority.
“It’s about investment beyond your comfort zone and not because
you want to get something out of it, but because you’re doing what
scripture says which is to love your neighbour as yourself.”
He tries to relate to everyone, no matter what negative things he
may have heard about people.
“Even though I know what your faults are I look beyond that
because God looked beyond my faults. If you nit-pick and say I’m
not going to work with certain people you end up with a small
group of people who are likely to be sycophants. They will say yes
because you want to hear them say yes. But your growth and your
breakthrough are hindered.”
Muyiwa's friendliness and charm belies a strong character and
unrelenting desire to lead worship on the biggest platforms
possible. It is a desire fuelled by his love for the Lord and a passion
for life.
Muyiwa was born in the UK but went back to Nigeria with his
parents as a toddler. He returned to Britain with his siblings but
without his parents, as they wanted him to have a British education.
All Nations Centre, in Kennington, south London, where he cut his
musical teeth. His pastors were Rev Les Isaac, the founder of Street
Pastors, and Rev David Shosanya, who remains one of Muyiwa’s
closest friends. It was during these years that God started to
impress on his heart that he should lead worship.
Muyiwa went on to get a degree in business from University of
Westminster and to work at Sony Music where he helped promote
artists like Mariah Carey, Lauren Hill, The Fugees and Bob Dylan.
Muyiwa has had his share of tragedies. Prior to starting his job he
learnt that his father, a major advocate for Christianity in his native
Nigeria, had died from an assassin’s bullet. Before that, his younger
brother had got involved in an armed robbery and was sent back
to Nigeria where he was later shot by an armed robber. A few years
later his mother died in a car crash.

The principal aim is to encourage viewers to become adopters across the UK but the
campaign focuses on Lambeth which has a mounting number of children from mixed or
black backgrounds still waiting for parents. OH TV has produced a commercial, a short

Patrick Campbell, OH TV’s Creative Director explained: “When developing the concept
of the commercial in particular I thought about what the highest achievement of a
young black boy from Lambeth could be. We have come up with a big gettable idea that
everyone can see and understand... the first black Prime Minister!" The commercial will

“These things have made me incredibly grateful," Muyiwa says.
"If it wasn’t for God, I wouldn’t have gotten through some of the
things that I went through. My gratefulness manifests itself in how
I express myself on stage. It affects how I treat people. You don’t
know what they are going through and where they are going to.”
Muyiwa is still on a journey that is taking him upwards and
onwards. He is starting a series of seminars and mentoring sessions
to share some of what he’s learnt with younger artists.
Muyiwa’s life and music show that negative life experiences should
not stop anyone from achieving the goals God has placed in their
heart, and that faith, hard work, determination, taking advantage
of opportunities and connecting with others will always be the key
requisites upon which a successful ministry as a Christian artist are
built.
FACTS ABOUT MUYIWA
• Muyiwa's favourite scriptural verses are Psalm 124 which he
usually recites when performing and Psalm 27 given to him by his
parents the last time he saw them.
Jamaican Summer was a season of TV shows broadcast by OH TV
globally and by TVJ's breakfast show Smile Jamaica in Jamaica.
The broadcasting duo brought forward a pioneering season that
covered athletics, food, politics, and history and even career
opportunities. And for three weeks, Smile Jamaica, Jamaica's most
popular morning show was produced in the OH TV offices in
London and broadcast live for three hours every day.
• Muyiwa's favourite preachers are Dr AR Bernard and Rev David
Shosanya.
• Muyiwa's favourite artists are Pastor Marvin Winans, Lionel Richie
and Yolanda Adams.
With Jamaica’s 50th independence celebrations taking place just
before the Olympics, there was an air of excitement filled with
positive jubilations around the country. On top of Smile Jamaica
Live OH TV captured this with shows such as Jamaica Does London
2012, Jamaican Summer, In De House, Made in Jamaica, J.A. Bites,
Respect Jamaica, and Jamaica’s Top 50 Icons. The shows delivered
an explosion of colour, culture, and sounds, enticing viewers to
stay tuned for the Jamaican takeover. There was an ensemble of
celebrities eager to get involved and share their passions and crafts
derived from Jamaica. The studio was alive with artists such as
Beverly Knight who sang live, the reggae artist and celebrity chef
Levi Roots who cooked tongue-tantalising dishes, the campaigner
and writer Doreen Lawrence OBE, Daphne Reid best known from
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Colin Jackson CBE, and many more.
• Muyiwa attends House on the Rock in Tufnell Park, London.
• Muyiwa is a great admirer of the MOBO award winner Guvna B.
• Muyiwa and Riversongz songs sung in churches in the UK and
abroad include Our God is Good, and Alleluia Eh.

THE CAMPAIGN
The key message at the centre of OH TV’s multimedia campaign is that you never know
what our children can achieve if they are given a chance.
The Borough of Lambeth faces particular challenges around
adoption in the black community. According to the council one third
of the 180 children in care in Lambeth are black. With few black
people willing to adopt, there is a need to challenge an ingrained
resistance and dispel long-held myths in the black community.
Some of these myths according to Alasdair Smith, acting head of
the looked after children's service from neighbouring Southwark
council, are that people often think you cannot adopt if you are
single, over 40, an unmarried couple, gay or in a gay partnership,

In an ideal world every boy and girl would be given the same
opportunity to start his or her life journey – love, care, comfort, a
solid home, good school education and full family support – but
unfortunately for a lot of children, especially in Lambeth, this is not
the case.

CHANGING FUTURE HISTORY
What have you learnt from working on Real Talk?
One thing I've learnt is that our community has been silent for too long. Real Talk
isn’t just about talking but about listening. We show the community that we are
listening.
2GETHERjanuary2013.indd 6-7
• 45% of children in Lambeth’s care are of mixed or black parentage.
• There are around 4,000 children from a great variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds
across the UK needing adoption every year.
• Most adoption agencies will not consider applicants under the age of 25.
• Applicants do not have to be a British citizen to adopt. They must have a fixed home in
the UK and must have lived in the UK for at least 1 year before starting their application.

I'm so happy hosting this show. It's like black Question Time, but you don't have
to be black to appreciate its content. Anyone can talk. We are discovering the real

can be heard.
issues through discussion. The other shows I did were alright but
I'm so happy to be doing a show that's relevant to the African and
Caribbean people, a show that respects us, our parents and our
community.

OH TV took a risk having a show like this. I say this because people don't want

We will tackle some controversial issues. Why do some black women bleach?
Why do people still turn to native witch doctors? Are we close to the Asian

the things we need. Why do we always buy from other communities?

or if you work full time. In a recent article for The Guardian he explained reasons why
adoption is more of a challenge in the black community. Commonly, black ethnic groups
tend to be small which leads to fewer potential adopters. He also pointed out that there
might be a general distrust of social services or lack of consideration for official adoption
services. For example, common practice for many African and Caribbean families is to look
after children informally rather than go through a formal process of legal adoption.
According to Sir Martin Narey, former Chief Executive Officer of Barnardo's and
Government adoption adviser, there is a growing number black children waiting in the
care system rather than being adopted. This is a major concern for Lambeth Council.
Debbie Jones, Executive Director of Lambeth’s Children and Young People's Service is
determined to decrease the number of mixed race and black children waiting to be
adopted, particularly boys. “We cannot do this alone. We must work in partnership with
other agencies and boroughs," she says. "We want to make the process of adoption
quicker. We need to look at breaking down the barriers, real or perceived, as these keep
our children in care.”
Can you tell me about this season’s topics?

The Wild, a hugely successful South African soap will begin showing

Smile Jamaica Live was presented by the British Olympian gold
medalist Tessa Sanderson CBE and the Jamaican journalist Dahlia
Harris. It offered an insight into what is current in the UK with live
on-location interviews from Olympic coaches, support staff and
athletes. OH TV provided the one and only direct link to Jamaica,
giving viewers an exclusive access to the Olympic Games.
Shows such as Jamaica’s Top 50 Icons included many well known
artists, actors and media moguls who contributed to this interactive
show where Jamaica’s 50th birthday was celebrated.
PARTY AT JAMAICA HOUSE
Jamaica House at 02 Arena was the official country house for
the Olympics and also the headquarters of the Jamaica Olympic
Association. It opened for ten days and welcomed everyone to
celebrate all things Jamaican. It was a home away from home for
the Jamaican athletes and fans and the place where all the 'back
stage action' went on. Also, it offered Londoners unique insight into
Jamaican history, culture and way of life.
