August 2016 - The University of Waikato
University of Waikato October 2016 Wed 12—Fri 14 Oct | 7.30pm Theatre Studies Don’t Look Back Across the river. At the end of the earth. A bride felled on her wedding day. A groom learning loss at the altar. When grief defies any natural law, what would you sacrifice for those you love? How deep would you go? Theatre Studies at the University of Waikato presents an original production exploring a love that traverses life and death. Door Sales - Cash Only $10. Bookings: Ph 838 4922 [email protected] Sat 15 Oct | 8pm Notorious Management Ltd Ben Hurley’s Earth Planet World "Earth Planet World is uplifting and well-executed. Judging by the fizzing auditorium post-show, the rest of the audience agreed." Metro magazine Since South Sudan became an independent state in 2011, there are 195 sovereign states on this Earth Planet World, and Ben will touch on each one of them in just 60 minutes. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, they all have their quirks, and Ben is perfectly placed to show us how funny they all are. You can expect a fastpaced ride; think more bullet train than Auckland traffic, and things will ramp up as we begin the countdown. Having performed comedy for over 15 years, this show is the biggest challenge Ben has set himself to date. Unlike most shows, which grow out of material that is tried and tested on audiences throughout the year, this show has to be written specifically around this very specific theme. There may be some disputed countries in this earth planet world, but there’s nothing to dispute about the fact that Ben is the perfect comic to bring this show to its full potential. Of course, there’s the usual spiel about how we all know him from the TV (he’s been on it lots), his years of experience and, of course, all of those awards. We don’t like to brag or mess about so just note the important ones, 7 Days, The FRED Award and the Billy T Award. Car parking free after 4.30pm New Works by Cara Fotofili 15 October - 9 December Calder & Lawson Gallery "Cara Fotofili is a painter who lives in Cambridge whose artistic practice reached the top of a list of priorities in a “life begins at 60” moment, after returning from 15 years living on a remote pacific island. Her present work has developed from the requirements of a recently completed Master of Media Arts degree at Wintec. It has become a practice that is process driven where she allows the inherent creative properties of the media (watercolour on paper at present) the freedom to express itself by limiting the input from the artist as much as possible. One way this is implemented is by painting on a five metre scroll where only a small section is visible at a time and the entire work is not revealed until it is complete. Cara embraces the idea that creativity emerges from experimentation and from the courage to accept failure so that it becomes necessary that her present work will run its course and wander into unfamiliar territory in future."
