2015 Annual Report - Waikato Badminton
ANNUAL REPORT AND STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS For presentation to Members at the Annual General Meeting to be Held at the Eastlink Badminton Stadium 30 Old Farm Rd, Hamilton East 6TH DECEMBER 2015 At 7.30 pm LIST OF OFFICERS: 2015 PATRON Pat Dallinger, MBE PRESIDENT Philip Paterson VICE PRESIDENT Fiona Purdue CEO: Tjitte (TJ) Weistra DIRECTOR OF COACHING Peter Jensen FINANCIAL CONTROLLER Loloma Foster KIWISPORT OFFICER: Amy Wright ACCOUNTANT Brian Bartels, Hemi, Edwards, Bartels COMMITTEE Bikash Mukherjee, Fiona Steeghs, Kirsten Rose, Paul Hanton, Tejinder Virk, Dwayne Irwin, Maurice Smith MASTERS SELECTORS TJ Weistra, Peter R. Jensen JUNIOR CONVENOR Kirsten Rose HON LIFE MEMBERS Pat Dallinger MBE, Maureen Sherborne, Jocelyn Silvester, Doreen Wood, Maurice Smith, Malcolm Brown, Bill Bartels, Alicia Urlich, (Peter Icke †, Joyce Musk †) President’s Report I am pleased to report that 2015 was another successful year for Waikato Badminton in a lot of different ways due to the efforts, vision, planning, passion and hard work of the present and previous Management Committees, Staff and Volunteers. In 2013 the WBA developed a three year Strategic Plan (2013-2015) to try and accomplish the objectives of our Regional Sporting Organisation. At the end of our three year strategic plan we have achieved most of our goals. Some of which seemed a bit too optimistic 4 years ago when we set them up. For example as planned we have increased Hall hire revenue by over 60% from 66,000 to over 100,000 and this was while we kept the rates for clubs the same over the last 4 years. We have more players using our hall more often which is great. The other reports in this AGM report will detail all the main achievements but I would like to thank the Management Committee and all the Waikato Badminton Staff as well as all the Waikato Volunteers at family, community group, school, club, regional, national and even International level for their passion, commitment, and effort in making our great game of Badminton “happen” in the Waikato and the world in a really, wonderful, fun, competitive and skilful way. The above objectives are still and will continue to be what the Waikato Badminton Association must be about if we are going to be taken seriously as the deliverer of this wonderful sport of Badminton to the people of the Waikato, which is why they are the objects of our “New Constitution” that was adopted unanimously at a Special General Meeting recently. We outgrew our old constitution so instead of trying to continually make small alterations each year we decided to find something new that fitted with what we are doing. The new constitution reflects how our Association of affiliated Clubs will be governing badminton in the Waikato. An elected group of Club members (Board) will be giving strategic and governance direction to the WBA while a team of staff and sub-committees aim to achieve the objectives of the Association. This team is being led by a Chief Executive Officer who reports to the board. So, from December it will be called a Board of Directors with a President and Vice President. Thank you to everyone that has helped shape and mould the new WBA constitution to fit our culture and badminton community so that we can continue to grow and deliver badminton to the Waikato for many more years. Special thanks to Alistair Gatt who has written the new constitution and all his help and advice in designing it to fit our Association. The New Waikato Badminton Association Board will be looking for input and suggestions for the 2016 to 2019/20 strategic plan during the next year. We have a group of paid staff with specific roles to drive the Waikato Badminton objectives and goals. We have a CEO position filled by TJ, a Financial Controller, Loloma, and the Director of Coaching role filled by Peter R. Jensen as well our Kiwi Sport Officer Amy Wright who took over from Tracey Hallam at the start of 2014. As you all know TJ is our CEO. This is TJ’s second year in his role as WBA CEO. Last year I said “TJ is everything anyone could want in a CEO. His leadership, drive, commitment, passion, vision, mana, abilities and skills have enabled the WBA to achieve its objectives and goals.” This year he has continued to grow in his role finding new sponsors, meeting with business leaders and sporting organisations such as Sport Waikato and organising new events from Junior Interclub Competitions to the Waikato International. He is the contact person for every club and seems to know everyone who plays or administrates badminton in Waikato, New Zealand and a good deal of the rest of the world. He is continuing to find new revenue streams and find ways for more people to play and enjoy badminton. He also still strings racquets, empties rubbish bins, changes light bulbs and sweeps floors. Thanks so much TJ. A lot of our funding comes from Grant funding, Pub Charities and other organisations such as Charitable Trusts, Regional Sports Trusts and Government Organisations like Sport New Zealand and I would like to thank Loloma for her tremendous efforts in this area. She has developed a good relationship with many of these funders due to her diligence, honesty and attention to detail. Thanks again Loloma. Also thanks for keeping track of all our financial transactions and payments. Amy Wright was our KiwiSport Officer and has delivered Badminton sessions to thousands of Waikato School children. We try to work with junior clubs in areas to get these children engaged in playing badminton once Amy has finished. Thanks Amy and thanks to Sport Waikato for including Badminton in their Kiwi Sport programme. Unfortunately Sport New Zealand has changed the way they will fund Kiwi Sport programmes going forward. We will not be able to employ a full time person to plan and deliver Kiwi Sport Badminton all year round to all the schools in all of the Waikato. We will have to target groups of students in parts of the Waikato for some of the year with the help and support of the local schools and clubs and then contract someone to deliver these projects. Because of these changes Amy’s contract was not renewed at the end of September 2015. The Director of Coaching role was created last year and filled by Peter R. Jensen from Denmark in April 2014. He was joined by his family, his wife Lene and two daughters Josephine and Julie in July 2014. Waikato Badminton is very lucky to have a world class coach like Peter. He has quickly fitted in and developed a great culture and rapport with all our players. He is delivering world class coaching programmes to them while also coaching the New Zealand National Squad and Under 19 New Zealand National Squad. He is also developing local coaches and delivering coaching courses. Waikato Teams and Individual players have had many great results in National and International tournaments due to Peter’s coaching. He also played in both the Wisden Cup team (Silver Medal) and the Masters One team that won the New Zealand Division One Masters Competition. Thanks Peter and also Lene who has done an amazing job by helping out as a volunteer wherever she can such as painting the inside of the stadium to make it look as smart and modern as the new enlarged office we built in February this year . Congratulations to all the Waikato players from U13 to Super Veterans that have achieved so many great results this year in both team and individual competitions. My special congratulations to the two Waikato junior players, Erena Calder-Hawkins and Chris Steeghs who are both part of the New Zealand Junior Team that competed in Lima, Peru in both the Team and Individual World Junior (Under 19) Champs. Thanks again to everyone involved with Waikato Badminton. With your continued support and help I know that 2016 will be just as successful. A special thank you and congratulations to the below Award winners in particular Loloma Foster who was awarded a Badminton New Zealand Service Award at the 2015 BNZ Awards Night held at Sky City in Auckland. 2015 AWARDS Service to Badminton in NZ (awarded by BNZ) Administrator of the Year: Volunteer of the Year: Coach of the Year: Club Service Awards: Loloma Foster Steve Kim Rupinder Virk Andrew Chan John Jiang Hillcrest Murray Orr Senior Recognition: Vinnie Harris Senior Player of the Year: Oliver Leydon-Davis Masters Recognition: Stuart Morgan Masters Player of the Year: TJ Weistra Junior Player of the Year (2014) Chris Steeghs Junior Recognition Trophy (2014) Vineet Singh Most Improved Player Overall (2014) Matthew Graham Most Improved Elite Squad Player (2014) Jahvaya Wheki Most Improved Junior Rep Players (2014) Bianca Yunus, Deveal Wijaya Most Improved Development Squad Players (2014) Amreen Virk, Jackson Bell Loloma Foster – Badminton NZ Service Awards Philip Paterson WBA President CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Annual Report Introduction / Background It is my pleasure to hereby present the CEO report based on the 2014 / 2015 financial year and the 2015 season which has been successful in many ways. A small surplus has been achieved despite some significant challenges in in the finance arena but thanks to yet another increase in stadium court hire, ongoing support from our funders / sponsors and new revenue streams created throughout the year have ensured that our books are looking good. A big thank you once again to Loloma for her work in the finance and accounts department which she has been doing for well over 15 years now and for which we are very grateful. Peter R. Jensen, our Director of Coaching, and his family have now been with us for over 1,5 years and we could not be more pleased with Peter’s work and the overall contribution of his family to Badminton in the Waikato. Unfortunately Amy Wright, our KiwiSport Officer, has had to leave us due to significant changes in the KiwiSport structure from 1 October 2015 which meant we were unable to renew her contract after 30 September this year. We will aim to gain sufficient funding to continue with the KiwiSport programme on a part time basis from March 2016 as KiwiSport is a crucial programme and I encourage all our junior clubs to discuss with me how together we can put together a project which will see more kids playing Badminton and linked from schools to our junior clubs. Thanks to Amy for her contribution to the KiwiSport programme. To Philip Paterson, WBA President, thanks again for supporting my role as CEO. It has again been a pleasure working with you, sharing our passion for not only Badminton but also the WBA as an organisation. To the WBA Management Committee, thanks for your trust and support, you have done a great job in ensuring we keep moving forward as an organisation which is necessary in the always changing landscape of sport and recreation. There is a lot more we can achieve as an organisation and for that I ask the AGM to support our committee and the proposed changes to our governance structure which are on now firmly on the table at this AGM. The below report is based on the six strategic themes of the WBA Strategic Plan: Growing Numbers & Statistics Between 1 October 2014 and 30 September 2015 well over 100 new Stadium Membership cards were issued. This is yet again a major increase which was reflected in an increase of court hire usage. The total amount of stadium hire for the financial year has for the first time in history exceeded the $100,000 mark. Club membership numbers are steady at approximately 1000 which is similar to last year. Given the downwards trend of decreasing club membership across sports in New Zealand and the rest the world this is a good result. Badminton is still growing in popularity but there are challenges with this growth as the increase in numbers is not necessarily based on the traditional club membership model as we know it. We are very aware that some clubs are struggling with membership numbers and subsequently the income from memberships which assist the running of the clubs. A proposal will be tabled during this AGM to drastically change the affiliation model and to reduce the affiliation fees for clubs affiliated to the WBA. We seek your support for these changes which aims to future proof our association and the clubs. A number of new clubs have started up this year and we welcome all of them into our Badminton family. Having new clubs affiliating to the WBA is against the overall and trend and can partly be credited to the continued growth of especially the Hamilton population as well as an increase in people choosing Badminton as their preferred activity. Servicing Stakeholders We always look for ways to increase the ways we interact with our stakeholders. This year we launched a new website and we have focused a lot on engaging with our stakeholders through the website and social media which has resulted in a huge increase in website traffic and Facebook likes and post engagement. Combined with regular emails to keep clubs and members up to date with the latest events and activities I hope you have all felt informed and up to date with all things Badminton. We have many other stakeholders such as Badminton New Zealand, Sport Waikato, sponsors etc. Below a brief overview of the most important stakeholder activities of the previous 12 month period: o o o o o o o o o o o o o WBA Road Show Funding application and accountability assistance to various clubs 2 x Badminton NZ Community Coaching Course Renewal of MoU signed with Sport Waikato supporting our Director of Coaching role Partnership with Eastlink Sports for the delivery of Holiday programmes Partnership with Eastlink Sports for the employment of an Eastlink Sports Development Coordinator WBA Awards Night New rental agreement with a second Martial Arts Club Sponsors invited to finals day of Mitre 10 Mega Waikato International Sponsors and Life Members invited to Wisden & Slazenger Cup function Partnering with Badminton NZ to host a range of national events of significance Servicing schools with equipment needs PayPal / Credit Card Top Up facility added to current court hire system BNZ Community Coaching Course - Paeroa The office extension that was completed in February 2015 has been absolutely magnificent as it not only has created a much more pleasant work environment for staff but has also allowed us to increase the level of service we are able to provide to members, casuals, visitors etc. A big thank you to the Management Committee for supporting this project. The beginning The Results Funding, Sponsorship & New Revenue Streams We received a total of just over $157.000 worth of funding in the last financial year which was slightly less than budgeted. The target was not reached because we didn’t obtain any funding for the purchase of new tracksuits which subsequently led to no new tracksuits being bought. Sponsorship and fundraising revenue was steady due to advertisement in the stadium and several fundraising activities. Due to successfully finding sponsors for several of our events this last season our events revenue also increased. Revenue was generated from renting out space to a second Martial Arts club which share the social room space with another martial arts club, by hiring out our venue to Badminton NZ for the hosting of national events, new partnership with Badminton NZ to deliver High Performance services to the rest of New Zealand with Peter R. Jensen, our Director of Coaching (DOC), being appointed as the NZ National Coach and a continued partnership with Sport Waikato which generates $10,000 of funding for the DOC position. The WBA continues to be well positioned when it comes to successful funding applications which can be credited to careful planning of applications and the enormous amount of work Loloma does in this area. Coaching & Representative programmes Peter’s work in the coaching arena is really paying dividends with a number of successes for Waikato Badminton achieved this year with the highlight being that Chris Steeghs and Erena Calder-Hawkins were selected to represent New Zealand at the World Junior Championships in Peru. Plenty of podium finishes were recorded in all age groups this year with some outstanding results (medals) at National age group championships. Congratulations to Julie Jensen (gold in the U13 girls doubles at nationals), Adam Jeffrey and Lily Rose (both silver in boys and girls doubles at the U15 national)…………………………….. Our Masters Division 1 team finally did it!!! They won the BNZ Inter Association Division 1 title for the first time since it was introduced in 1982. Masters Division 1 team Events For the first time since 2007 WBA hosted an international event again which was great. After various years of focusing on regional and local events only as part of the strategic plan we were in the position to host an international event with the help of sponsors and without any negative financial consequences for the organisation. Thanks to Mitre 10 Mega for their support in 2015 and I’m pleased to say that for the 2016 edition Maurices Pools & Spas has come on board as principal sponsor ensuring we can run another great event. Unfortunately we were unable to host the NZ National Secondary School Championships due to unforeseen circumstances. Too many secondary school national championships for various sports had been awarded to Hamilton and as a result there was no accommodation available to accommodate over 50 teams. Together with Badminton New Zealand the decision was made that the event would go to North Harbour instead with Waikato being awarded the event for 2016. The annual Waikato ABCD Championships has turned into a real big event with over 100 players entered for the 3rd year running. It was combined this year with a fundraiser for our juniors as well as the Wisden & Slazenger Cup teams and I would like to thank all the people that gave up their time and put in a great effort to raise several thousands of dollars. For the second year we organised a “Glow in the Dark” event which was a huge success with over 140 University Students participating and over 120 participants from our clubs and local community. The event is already in the calendar for the 2016 season. Then there was the inaugural Junior Interclub Competition which was held in August. 6 teams from 6 different clubs participated on one Sunday with the Hamilton Chinese Learning School winning the first edition. The feedback was very positive and we will be looking to build on this event in the coming years. 2015 Bike Fundraiser supported by NZHL – Hamilton Metro & Glow in the Dark Event Public Relations and Marketing Promoting Badminton and creating more awareness of the available facilities to play Badminton have been high on the list in the last 12 months. Social media has been a very important tool to create (new) engagement with current and potential new members and our Facebook profile has again grown hugely as a result of targeted campaigns. The new website has been a real asset in terms of raising our online profile with current and new members finding their way around the site much easier than previously. The added PayPal / Credit Card Top Up facility via de stadium membership card login has been welcomed by many card holders with over 90% of all top ups now being completed online using PayPal / Credit Card. We decided to stop advertising in the Waikato Times as the response rate was very low in comparison to the cost involved. For half of the costs we advertised four times in the Fitness Journal which is growing rapidly in terms of popularity, distribution outlets and number of issues being printed on a monthly basis. It also allowed us to profile our sport in a magazine that reaches readers with a definite interest in sport and recreation. We welcomed a few new sponsors this year for which we are very grateful. As funding streams are getting harder to excess it is important we get as many businesses partnering with Waikato Badminton. We really appreciate the support we are getting from local business and I wish to extend a special thank you to Blair Miller from New Zealand Home Loans, Hamilton Metro, for all his support this year. To conclude A stable financial year combined with overall growth in terms of the number of people playing Badminton, the successful hosting of events and some outstanding results on court achieved by Waikato Reps have made for another great year. The constitutional change will no doubt bring some fresh challenges but most importantly it will bring new opportunities. Your support in ensuring this change benefits the WBA in the (near) future will be greatly appreciated. TJ Weistra Chief Executive officer DIRECTOR OF COACHING Annual Report 2015 has been an exciting year for me, my first “full year” at Waikato Badminton, and a year that I looked forward to when I started in April/May 2014. I learned a lot during 2014 and had many ideas and things I would like to change. To mention a few; summer training, changing the numbers in our squads, and hopefully most important changing the overall view on badminton be it the view of players, parents or administrators. I’m trying every single day when I go to the stadium to encourage everyone coming in to understand that Badminton is a SPORT, not just a social / recreational sport. At the same time I try my best to convince all players and parents that it’s possible to combine school / study and badminton and an international career is within reach if you are willing to put in the hard work. Besides all the normal daily and weekly trainings/routines and my big passion for changing “The Badminton Culture” in Waikato/New Zealand, 2015 has also been a very busy year with many different events such as: 2 coaching courses held in the Waikato Region, 16 Club visits during the 2015 Road Show in March/April, Training sessions for HBHS, Peachgrove Intermediate, Thames Valley and a lot of individually age group tournaments around New Zealand to just mention a few. Our junior and senior players have achieved some outstanding results throughout the year and won a lot of medals at several events (see junior report and the Inter Association Teams & Results for more detailed results). My special congratulations to the two Waikato players Erena Calder-Hawkins and Chris Steeghs who both were selected to represent New Zealand at the World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru in November. Thanks to Philip Paterson and our new Development Squad trainer Vincent Harris for your hard work and effort on Mondays and Wednesdays with our “Stars of tomorrow” – The Development Squad. I also would like to thank Waikato Badminton and especially TJ for his support in my role as Director of Coaching but also everybody who has contributed to making me and my family’s moving to New Zealand such a good experience – here a special thanks to Phil & Pauline. Finally, I just want to let everyone know how fortuned all “Badminton players” in the Waikato region are; great facilities, easy 24/7 access, fantastic environment and so many opportunities in all age groups. So my quote of the year: “If it is important to you, you will find a way If not you’ll find an excuse” Peter R. Jensen Director of Coaching KIWISPORT It has been a very interesting and rewarding year for me now being in the role for a total of 1 year and 8 months. Even though I am not new to the role there has still have been ups and downs of course, but I guess I am more equipped now in responding to those downs. Introducing Badminton to children this year has yet again been a very rewarding experience, in particular when redelivering in the primary schools in the rural communities of the wider Waikato region. I believe that these children really enjoy the experience that Badminton brings them. It is much harder to give a good experience to those schools that did not have a large indoor facility (Sports Gym) as there were more factors the students had to cater to for being outside. I would say I still really enjoy going into Primary schools the most as their response to the badminton sessions are more rewarding. It is great to see the enjoyment in their faces when they can successfully complete the tasks and then be able to have rallies with their friends. I have found it a little difficult this year to keep the year 2’s interested with the balloons as they have already experienced a session with them. However if you give them a shuttle they find it very difficult to hit and do anything with it. That was one of my challenges this year to find new and innovative ways to keep that younger aged primary school children interested in badminton. Numbers – January 6 2014 – 1 October 2015 Primary schools (specifically years 1-4): KiwiSport has delivered badminton sessions to 1,515 children on one occasion in 2014 and 1,923 in 2015. This is an increase of 408 children having had a badminton KiwiSport session. Years 5-8 at primary / intermediate schools: 3,254 children have received a KiwiSport session in 2014 compared to the 3,640 in 2015. An increase of 386 children. Secondary School level : 824 students have received a KiwiSport Session at least once in 2014 compared to 2,795 which had played it in 2015. This is a huge increase in numbers by 1,971. The above numbers do not include follow up sessions and children with disabilities. The number of children in 2014 that received a follow up session was 3,667 and the number of children with disabilities that received a KiwiSport session was 134. The 2015 total number that received a follow up session was 4,266 and the total for children with disabilities was 80, an increase of 599 for the follow up sessions and a decrease of 54 for disabled children. I feel that the figures for High School level have improved drastically compared to last year. However nothing in particular was done any different to last year just that more schools are using badminton as a way to teach biomechanics to their students. From KiwiSport meetings I still believe that all KiwiSport officers are finding it difficult to increase their secondary school numbers. The percentage of where I was delivering KiwiSport sessions this year and last year are as follows: Last Year 2014 Primary Years 1-4 - 27.1% Primary/ Intermediate Years 5-8 - 58.2% Secondary Years 9-13 - 14.7% This Year 2015 - 31.4% - 45% - 23.6% During the last two holiday periods I have had the pleasure of delivering Holiday programmes and being involved with the running of the Eastlink Sports Holiday Programme. That particular Holiday Programme has been a huge success with the amount of increase of children attending each one. The last holiday programme I was unfortunately sick however they had close to 30 children attending per day which is awesome compared to the earlier one which was only getting 20 children max per day. Yet again one of my key successes this year has been The South Waikato Championships and The King Country Championships, which were both held in the event centres at Tokoroa and Te Awamutu. This was the second time I had the responsibility of running the South Waikato Championship tournament by myself and through the response of the previous year had an increase of students attending that tournament. The tournaments were run on the 11th and 13th August and overall the days were a huge success and allowed a large number of secondary school students to play badminton which they normally would not experience. The feedback from the teachers involved as coaches for the South Waikato Championships was yet again positive. They felt that the tournament ran smoothly and was great to see so many students playing badminton. It was good to see the numbers had also increased from the previous year and that so many had come back to play in the tournament again. The feedback received from the King Country was also positive as it was the first time running it but yet had a very good turnout of students playing. One School however found the structure of the tournament confusing and therefore the students did not enjoy it as much as they could have. I feel that this was due to the lack of understanding of the rules and could have been avoided if they had said yes to a school taster session before the tournament had started. I hope now that The South Waikato Championships and The King Country Championships are now going to be tournaments that are locked into the secondary schools tournament planner for years to come. Overall I have found this year very rewarding and have enjoyed delivering KiwiSport Badminton to children. Looking back I feel I have built a few key connections in clubs which through my in school sessions has increased numbers. I still find it a difficult process for me on how to entice children who display some Badminton talent into clubs, or regular play. Lastly I would like to thank you Waikato Badminton for allowing me this opportunity to be the KiwiSport officer for the last year and 8 months. It has definitely been one of my best jobs I have ever had and have fond memories delivering badminton. I wish Waikato Badminton all the best for the future and hope that the junior numbers do not start to decrease, but find new and exciting ways to get school children playing badminton. Amy Wright KiwiSport officer JUNIOR CONVENOR’S REPORT Congratulations to all of our junior players for their successful season. Below is a summary of the major achievements made by Waikato Representative players in the 2015 season. WBA hosted the following events: Under 13 Waikato Open (North Islands) Under 15 Local Derby Teams Event Adidas Under 17 Open X-TRM NZ Under 17 National Championships On behalf of WBA, I would like to extend a special thank you to all of the volunteers for their assistance during the 2015 season. Thank you also to all of the parents and helpers who travelled with our teams this year, many taking leave from work, and being the same people who supported the teams during interassociations and many other local (and not so local) tournaments. These people assisted by being cooks, helpers, drivers, motivators and most importantly supporters. Under 15: Phil Paterson (Coach), Kirsten Rose (Manager), Wendy Perkinson, Mike Perkinson and Kadir Wijaya. Under 17: Peter Jensen (Coach), Lene Jensen (Manager) and Carmen Johnstone. Under 19: Peter Jensen & Vinny Harris (Coach) and Katrina Peake (Manager). Thanks also to the following people/sponsors: TJ Weistra for managing the preparation of tournaments and liaison with BNZ and Northern Region arranging the local derby competition for the players and to Phil for his coaching of the Under 15 team. Peter Jensen for his enthusiastic coaching of the Under 17 and Under 19 team this year, they have all learnt so much. Congratulations also to Peter for his continued role with Badminton New Zealand coaching the NZ Under 19 Squad. Our junior sponsor Pop n Good Popcorn. The support of our patron Pat Dallinger MBE. Pat along with other life members, Doreen, Alicia and Maureen continue to enthusiastically support our juniors at events. Amy Wright for assisting with the running of the non-rep tournaments. Thanks also to TJ and Loloma for all their assistance with the set-up of these events. The increased numbers shows the players benefit from these tournaments. HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015 SEASON Waikato Under 15 and Under 17 Inter-association Both teams won a Bronze Medal at the New Zealand Nationals Championships Teams Event. Selection for New Zealand High Performance Squads Congratulations to the following players for making the 2015 New Zealand Squads: Under 15 Squad Adam Jeffrey Under 19 Squad Erena Calder-Hawkins Chris Steeghs Jasmanjot Virk Jahvaya Wheki Mathew Graham Throughout the year, several junior players achieved great results in tournaments entered. These results can be directly attributed to all their hard work and the amount of effort put into their trainings sessions, etc., on a weekly basis. Hard work = great results! As in previous years, there were high numbers of players entering Waikato run tournaments making them very successful. RECOMMENDATIONS Similar to last year, we are always in need of more parent help for both the hosting and travelling events. This year, things were made a bit easier due to Badminton New Zealand changing the format. Previously, the Palmerston North event had been held as a North Island team’s event over seven days. The new format that was held this year was a National Teams event over four days only. Going forward, I personally feel that the new format was easier to accommodate for the team, parent helpers did not have to take as much time off work, but also it was easier on the players not having to cope with the individual event that had previously followed the team’s event. In the second round we had the Presidents and Dallinger Cups. The Presidents Cup had 8 teams entered with Masters RED beating Masters BLUE in the final. The Dallinger Cup had 5 teams entered with Hamilton beating WBA Juniors in the final. So in total we had 13 clubs entering a total of 37 teams over both competitions this year including WBA again entering teams of Juniors. Thanks to all the clubs that entered teams this year, and it’s great to see an increase in the number of teams from last year. A sub-committee is doing a full review of this season to look at how interclub ran this year, with a view to having a more even competition next year with grading of players. All clubs will be informed of the outcomes of the review early next year.
