Most of the lake park reserve areas have coin operated BBQ areas for visitors use. Some of the more popular places during the summer months for swimming are Hannah’s Bay on Lake Rotorua, the Blue Lake, The Landing at Lake Tarawera and Boyes Beach at Lake Okareka. Most of the lakes also have associated walkways. KUIRAU PARK Situated within the junction of Ranolf Street and Lake Road, only a 5 minute walk from the city centre. Here you can see boiling mud pools, hot steaming crater lakes and sulphur vents. There are two hot mineral foot pools in which you can soak your feet while visiting the park. Allow about 40 minutes. SULPHUR BAY WALKWAY Great for those who don’t have their own transport and are staying in the city centre. It starts at the Rotorua Lakefront promenade from where you can see out to Mokoia Island in the middle of Lake Rotorua. The promenade leads onto a path to Motutara Point and Sulphur Bay. You will notice as you continue the water turns to a cloudy white colour. This area of the lake is situated on top of an active geothermal area, the water is warm and the smell sulphurous. This is also a significant wildlife reserve. Continuing around you will see boiling mud pools and sulphur vents. Stay on the pathway at all times, as the earth’s crust is very thin and dangerous in places. THE REDWOOD GROVE Rotorua has one of the most spectacular recreational playgrounds right on its back doorstep! Just a 5 minute drive from the city centre the Whakarewarewa Forest offers an opportunity to experience nature at its most beautiful. Famous for its grove of Coastal Californian Redwoods the forest has some of the finest walking and mountain bike trails in NZ. The network of walking tracks cater for all abilities and are clearly marked. For more information contact the Tenon Forests Visitor Centre on Long Mile Road. THE BLUE LAKE Walk around the lake’s circumference through exotic forest. It is about 5kms in length and takes about 1.5 hours. The south side of the lake also has good swimming beaches which are accessible from the walkway and from the lookout car park between the Blue and Green Lakes.
