IHENGA AND THE PATU-PAIAREHE PEOPLE
Long ago, the top of the mountain now known as Ngongotaha was the home
of the Patu-paiarehe fairy people. They were a peaceful people; they lived off the
products of the forest and inanga (whitebait) from Lake Rotorua.
The mountain was very dry near the summit, so the Patu-paiarehe women had
to draw water from a spring under the northern cliffs and carry it back up the
mountain. One day, while doing this, they met Ihenga, a Maori chief.
While exploring the area, Ihenga had seen smoke rising near the mountain top.
He had left his wife beside the stream and climbed the mountain to find who
lived there, meeting the Patu-paiarehe women near the top. The climb had
made him very thirsty, and a beautiful young woman gave him a drink from
a calabash.
The people crowded around Ihenga, touching him and asking questions. He
was afraid they would kill and eat him, and he fled down the mountainside. The
people chased him but he outran them all, except the woman who had given
him the water. She wanted to catch him and make him her husband.
She threw off most of her clothes so she could run faster, and Ihenga, looking
back as he raced down the mountainside, knew he would be caught, and that
he would never see his wife again.
He smeared himself with kokowai (red ochre mixed with shark oil) from his
satchel as he ran. The haunga (odour) disgusted the fairy woman and she
stopped chasing Ihenga. He rejoined his wife beside the stream.
Ihenga later became friendly with the Patu-paiarehe, living near his pa
Whakaeketahuna, at the northern base of the mountain. The names he gave
the mountain and the area live on today, in Mt Ngongotaha (Ngongo means to
drink and taha is a calabash) and Fairy Springs.

all you need to
know about Rotorua
The Rotorua district has a multi-cultural population of
approximately 68,000 people – around 35% are Maori.
An international tourism icon, Rotorua is renowned as
the heartland of Maori culture.
Rotorua attracts some 2.9 million visitors annually. There
are 16 lakes in the vicinity of Rotorua, many of which
are fishable lakes packed with rainbow and brown
trout. The lakes, all formed from the craters of extinct
volcanoes, are a popular attraction for many waterbased activities.
From the moment you enter Rotorua you know you’re
somewhere quite different. Whether it be the
sneaky threads of steam finding unlikely escape
routes in parks, pathways and streets or the
distinct scent of sulphur wafting through
geothermal hot spots, Rotorua offers an
impressive welcome.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
MO
Ro
Rotorua is a mecca for mountain bikers. Just
minutes from the city centre is an adventure
mi
playground comprising thousands of hectares
pla
of forest awaiting exploration.
Entry to the Whakarewarewa Forest and
Ent
tracks is free. The purpose-built trail network
tra
caters to riders of all skill levels, from begincat
ners and families to experts looking for exne
treme action. Trails weave their way through
lush native ferns beneath soaring canopies
of Redwood, Radiata, Douglas Fir, Eucalyptus
and Larch trees. Riders can catch glimpses of
Rotorua’s beautiful lakes, geothermal activity
and brooding Mt Tarawera through the trees.
Entry to the trail network can be easily accessed from The Redwoods on Long Mile
Road or Waipa State Mill Road. Both entry
points have car parking facilities and the
Redwoods Gift Shop and Visitor Centre is an
excellent source of advice and forest information, including trail maps and picnic and toilet
facilities.
Bikes and equipment can be hired from a
range of shops around Rotorua and staff
members at these places have great local
knowledge. Take a guided tour, learn how to
ride a bike correctly with a skills clinic or simply explore at leisure with a detailed trail map.
Each trail has its grading signposted at the
start, making it easy to identify the best
courses to ride in relation to skill levels. The
wide, sweeping beginners’ tracks with gentle
climbs and descents are fantastic fun. With
a mix of track grades available it is easy for
everyone to find a trail to suit. Riders can
move on to more challenging tracks as their
confidence and ability increases.

WALKING
Rotorua has many kilometres of walking
tracks just waiting to be explored. From lakeside strolls to trails for the more intrepid hiker,
there is something for every age, interest and
level of fitness.
For people wanting to enjoy some of the
sights around the city, the Rotorua City Walkway is a great option to consider. Developed
in stages over 10 years, this 26km walkway is
4
| www.rotoruaNZ.com
made up of eight shorter sections, allowing walkers to enter or exit at any stage.
Some of the main features enjoyed from this walkway include lakefront promenade, geothermal areas, native wildlife and local historical and cultural sites.
Rotorua’s renowned Whakarewarewa Forest offers some of the finest walking
trails you will experience. The Redwoods comprise a 288-hectare area of the
forest dedicated to recreation. Choose from a range of tracks varying in difficulty.
Panoramic views of the Rotorua region can be glimpsed through Redwood and
native trees from all the tracks. The most popular walk is the Redwood Memorial Grove track, where walkers can meander through the towering Redwoods,
planted in 1901. These majestic trees are 60m tall and 163cm in diameter. Walks
range from 30 minutes to several hours long.
Other excellent options are Hamurana Springs, Lake Tikitapu (the Blue Lake), the
Lake Okareka Walkway, and Tarawera Falls.
The adventurous should check out Whirinaki Forest Park and Te Urewera National
Park, both southeast of Rotorua. Information brochures on all these walks are
available from the Rotorua isite.

LAKES
With 16 lakes - 14 of them publicly accessible - Rotorua is a year-round aquatic
paradise. Lake Okareka and Blue Lake are popular swimming spots in summer,
and both offer barbecue facilities, picnic tables, toilets and a playground for your
enjoyment.
Just a 15-minute drive from central Rotorua is Lake Tarawera, one of the hidden
treasures of New Zealand. With stunning natural beauty this lake is set among
untouched native bush, rich in early Maori history and geothermal activity. A
short boat trip across the lake, Hot Water Beach offers a great camping spot and
the unique opportunity for hot water bathing on the lake edge.
Kayaking across beautiful Lake Rotoiti offers uninterrupted views of the lake and
a variety of New Zealand native bush. Just a 40-minute paddle away are natural
thermal pools on the edge of Lake Rotoiti at Manupirua. Relax and enjoy this
peaceful environment that offers water-only access. Enjoy spectacular views from
this little-known jewel and observe sail boats as they meander past.
White water rafting in Rotorua is often described as the experience of a lifetime.
Whether it’s your first time or you are an extreme adrenalin seeker, there is an
appropriate river excursion for you. The rivers in this region offer fantastic scenic
views, rafting through steep bush-clad canyons and the opportunity to experience the highest commercially rafted water fall in the world.
A casual lakeside dining experience can be enjoyed at many locations around
Rotorua. Unwind in a relaxed atmosphere and take in the natural beauty and
views offered by these waterfront establishments. Perfect for romantic nights, to
celebrate special occasions or simply relax after a long day sightseeing.
All Rotorua’s lakes offer endless opportunities for water skiing, kayaking, cruising,
hiking or picnicing.

FISHING
With a sparkling chain of fishable lakes, Rotorua is an angler’s dream. Whatever
your skill level or angling experience you will find a wide range of fishing opportunities available to you.
Rotorua offers 13 fishable lakes, which are world-renowned for the quality and
size of the trout they produce. Most of the lakes and rivers have good populations of rainbow trout, and a few have mixes of rainbow, brown, brook and
tiger trout. There are three lakes regarded as trophy lakes, Tarawera, Rotoiti and
Okataina. Rotorua is the easiest place in New Zealand to hook a trout, with Lake

KUIRAU PARK
Located next to the central business district, Kuirau Park is the site of the city’s
most recent geothermal eruption. Walk between bubbling mud pools, steaming
holes, crater lakes and sulphur vents. There are also two hot pools where visitors
can soak their feet. People are advised to stick to the tracks for safety reasons.
The playground is a great place to take the children and a weekly farmers market (Saturday morning) offers the opportunity to buy fresh local produce.
REDWOOD MEMORIAL GROVE WALKING TRACK
On this popular track you can meander through the breathtaking Californian
Redwoods which were planted in 1901. These towering trees stand at approximately 197 feet (60 metres) tall and create a wonderful shelter, along with
the under planted European Larch, for a diverse range of native plants and
birds. Another feature of this track is the board walk, which takes you across
the old thermal pond, home to a variety of exotic aquatic plant life. Admire
these magnificent trees which are dedicated to the memory of the men of the
New Zealand Forest Service who died in the two World Wars.
GOVERNMENT GARDENS
Just a short walk from the centre of town is the manicured Government
Gardens. These large formal gardens house the historic Rotorua Museum and

first church of St Faiths was built in 1885. It was moved in 1910 to make way
for a new larger church which was dedicated in 1914 and consecrated in

RAINBOW MOUNTAIN
Located 26km southeast of Rotorua, Rainbow Mountain (Maungakakaramea – mountain of coloured earth) offers a couple of great walks. The crater
lake walk is an easy 20 minutes’ return. Follow the signs from the car park
for views over two crater lakes, set against a backdrop of steaming brown,
up through regenerating native vegetation and geothermal ridges for a
three-hour round trip to the summit. Here you can enjoy 360º views over the
Rotorua region.
All these courses have golf carts, shops and
club houses.
