A PUBLICATION OF FOXCROFT ACADEMY for ALUMNI & FRIENDS
1
Dear Friends
and Alumni,
W
ith the opening of the new dormitory last fall, Foxcroft Academy went 24-7. There
have been a few challenges along the way such as serving 19 meals a week and
providing full-time supervision and living arrangements on campus along with
an array of activities and off campus excursions on nights and weekends. In all, though,
everything has gone extremely well. Truly, Foxcroft Academy has entered its next era of
educating students.
I hope you will enjoy reading an article in this issue by Lou Stevens ’49. Lou has offered
his extensive knowledge of Foxcroft football recalling past teams and their coaches. No one
keeps score as well as Lou, author of two histories of Dover-Foxcroft and long-time sports
writer for the Piscataquis Observer. We dedicate this article to our championship football
team who came so very close to taking the state title last fall.
Not to short our swimmers who, this year, were invited to the New England Regionals for
the first time ever. And the girls basketball team made it to the state semi-finals, a first for
them as well. The boys team had a season record of 16-3 and played in the state tournament
only to be defeated by top seed Washington Academy in the semi-finals.
I hope you are planning to attend this year’s Reunion Weekend August 6-8, 2010 (see
Schedule of Activities in this issue). Events kick off with mini-classes Friday afternoon
followed by the Lawn Party Friday evening. There will be a dedication ceremony honoring
English chair and faculty member Jim Brown ’70 with proceeds from a quilt raffle being
conducted by students during the weekend that will be added to the Horizon Scholarship
Fund named to honor Jim.
Also this summer we welcome Foxcroft Academy’s new Head of School, Mr. Arnold
Shorey. More about him and his plans for the Academy can be found in a question and
answer article located in this issue.
I wish to thank everyone for their support this past year. It has been a transformational
one for Foxcroft Academy and I have been pleased and honored to have been a part of it.
Sincerely,
Vandy Ellis Hewett ’75

1. Tell us about yourself and
your background in education.
An Interview with New
Head of School
Arnold Shorey
2
FOXCROFT ACADEMY ALUMNUS
I graduated from Maine Central
Institute (MCI) in 1985 and attended the
University of Maine at Farmington on a
four-year alumni scholarship. Shortly after
graduating from there in 1989, Stacy (Roy)
Shorey and I were married and began our
teaching careers at Nokomis and Troy
Central schools respectively.
At Nokomis, I taught math, social
studies and coached baseball and
basketball. Our oldest son, Andrew, was
born in 1991 and Christopher in 1994.
In 1995, I moved to MCI where I taught
math and coached football, basketball
and softball. In 1997, I was named Dean of
Students and started a master’s program
in Educational Leadership at UMO.
In 1998, I was appointed Assistant
Principal at Warsaw Middle School in
Pittsfield, Maine, and, in 2000, I was named
Principal. That year I also received my
master’s degree in Educational Leadership.
I was certified as a Maine superintendent
in 2004.
In 2005, I returned to Nokomis as
Principal and started a Certificate of
Advanced Study (CAS) program in Educational Leadership. In 2009, I was appointed
Assistant Superintendent for RSU 19,
formerly Maine SAD 48. This spring I will
receive my CAS in Educational Leadership.
I see myself as a student of leadership
and have plans to pursue a doctorate in
educational leadership. I am proud that my
son Andy is starting his second semester at
the University of Maine Farmington studying secondary education and mathematics.
My younger son, Chris, transferred this
spring to Foxcroft Academy to complete
his sophomore year. He was first in his
class at MCI. Stacy is currently Director of
Special Services at Maine SAD 53 already
having earned her CAS in Educational
Leadership. We all are very excited about
our new home at Foxcroft Academy.
Head of School
2. What have been some of the
more interesting challenges you
have faced as a teacher and
administrator?
While at Warsaw Middle School, my
major role was to be an agent of change. It
was not a warm or inviting place to learn
when I arrived. In the six years I was there,
I was able to transform the school into a
nationally respected “Spotlight School”
recognized by the New England League of
Middle Schools.
In my first week at Nokomis I received
over 100 calls about the math program from
board members, community members and
parents. I helped transform their math
program into an outstanding and wellrespected one. We did an analysis of the
methods and materials they were using and
worked through the supervision and
evaluation process with the staff. And when
we selected a new program, we worked hard
to educate the parents and community
about it. Today, Nokomis math students
score well on high stakes tests, and the
math department is a model in the way
they conduct professional development.
Also, I started advisory programs in
two schools that did not have one before
as a way to build relationships between
faculty and students. My most recent work
was to improve school scores on state and
national tests.
3. How do you rate the state of
education in Maine? The nation?
The state of education is, at best,
challenging. As the struggle continues
to fund education and hold schools
accountable, a new set of circumstances
has been created that is pulling schools
in many different directions due to new
initiatives every year at the federal
and state levels. Foxcroft Academy and
independent schools in general are in
the best position as we go about the job
of educating young people without the
bureaucracy created by these initiatives.
4. How did you first become
interested in Foxcroft Academy?
When I learned about the opening for
the Head of School at Foxcroft Academy,
I was very intrigued. Through my
experiences and research, I was very
impressed with the Academy. Foxcroft
has been a leader in standards-based
education. There are many opportunities
for students to be involved with the
school: performing arts, music, and
athletics in particular. As I went through
the interview process, my resolve to
become the next Head increased as I
met the trustees, students, teachers,
administrators and community members.
Their values and beliefs are very similar to
my own. Even though I had just accepted a
new role as Assistant Superintendent at
RSU 19, I could not pass up the opportunity.
I was very fortunate to be successful in
becoming the next Head of School.
5. What unique strengths or
perspectives do you bring?
• I have experience achieving “coherence,”
the ability for all the parts to work with
each to benefit the whole
• building positive relationships
• modeling expectations
• keeping what is best for students in the
forefront of decision-making and leading
others to do the same
• I have both public and independent
school backgrounds that will help
forge a strong relationship with
our communities while having the
experience of running an international
residential program
6. What do you expect will be
some of the challenges facing
Foxcroft Academy and town
academies in general?
• providing the best possible environment
for our international students and local
families to explore Foxcroft Academy’s
resources • creating more opportunities for our
international students to fully take
advantage of all that Dover-Foxcroft and
the State of Maine have to offer
• ensuring that the community, alumni,
donors and trustees feel that they are
part of FA’s community
7. What role do you see alumni
taking in the life of Foxcroft
Academy?
• to be a part of our school
• to visit often
• to support our initiatives
• to position the Academy as a leader
among independent schools in the region
• to support and help create
opportunities which are responsive to
the needs of our students
8. What would be your message
to current parents and students?
It is a tremendous honor to be named
Head of School at Foxcroft Academy. I look
forward to working with all stakeholders
continuing and building on the long-standing
reputation of excellence for their children.
9. What is your evaluation
of the relationship between
sending towns, the local school
district and FA?
I believe that there is a resilient
foundational relationship already and
I want to continue to strengthen that
relationship which is essential to Foxcroft
Academy’s success.
• maintaining a world-class educational
institution in a lean economy
• increasing our markets to attract other
local, regional and national students

A production crew from the PBS series
Insights was at Foxcroft Academy filming
students and classes February 9. Insights is
hosted by former “20/20” anchor Hugh
Downs. This episode grew out of a research
project commissioned several years ago
by the Maine Association of Independent
Schools and undertaken by Foxcroft
Academy’s Associate Head Jay Brennan.
The project investigated the 200-year
tradition of town academies in Maine.
Brennan added that Maine has what remains
of a very successful grass roots educational
model. At one point there were 122 town
academies in Maine. Only nine are left,
he added. But each is thriving, providing
real pluralism within the educational
landscape. The Insights footage is expected
to air this summer on PBS.

and Chair of the Scholarship Committee Tom Lizotte said
there are 15 endowed Horizon funds made possible by
contributions from generous alumni friends, faculty, staff and
trustees with a total value of more than $150,000. “You do not
have to be rich to give to Foxcroft,” he added. “You just have
to care about this school, its students, and be open to giving.”
Horizon Scholarships support students who wish to grow
academically and personally as well as raise their awareness
of the many educational opportunities that exist beyond
the walls of Foxcroft Academy. The awards are intended
primarily for summer learning experiences. Any full-time
Foxcroft Academy student is eligible to apply.

ruer words could not have been spoken as I learned on this
very special outing made possible in part with the help of
the Gordon and Wilma Andrews Horizon Scholarship Fund.
Last November, I flew from Portland, Maine, to Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, to study steelhead trout as part of my Horizon
Scholarship study program. After leaving Pittsburgh, we drove
three hours north toward Lake Erie. It was one of the most
beautiful rides I have ever been on. I even saw a coyote high on a
cliff looking down at the road as we passed by.
For this fly-fishing expedition, I stayed with my uncle in Girard,
Pennsylvania, the center of Steelhead Alley, a group of creeks
that are home to thousands of spawning steelhead trout during
certain seasons. People come from around the world to fish for
them in Girard.
I, too, had the pleasure of fishing while I was there. However,
in the words of A.K. Best, “the fishing was good; it was the
catching that was bad.” I did have the good fortune, however,
to catch a six pound twenty-seven inch female (hen) steelhead
which I released unharmed.
The highlight of my trip was a visit to the Fairview Fish
Culture Station, home to 300,000 baby steelhead, which is
operated by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. They
had not yet brought in the adults. There were two long buildings
loaded with baby fish and when you walked by, you could see the
fish jump.
I talked to one of the staff members who said they were about
to catch 600 adult steelhead and spawn them at the hatchery.
When we arrived at the hatchery we had to remove all outerwear
to protect the fish from the spread of bacteria. Had the bacteria
gone into the fish tanks, it would have decimated the fish
population. Something I found very interesting was that the baby
steelhead all had a little white spot on their back. It turns out the
fish pick at each other. Thank you so much to the benefactors of
the Gordon and Wilma Andrews Horizon Scholarship Fund.

Foxcroft Football
Foxcroft Academy Fie
First Year Coaches Rack
F
oxcroft football fans wondered last
fall how a new and young head coach
would do with a veteran Ponies team
where he would be replacing a long-time
and highly successful coach Paul Withee
whose 19 years at the helm were nearly
as many years in number as the age of his
successor. Even fans far from Oakes Field
soon knew, however, that Coach Danny
White ’03 was an excellent choice, both
because of White’s history as an athlete and
MVP and because he was working with a
team of talent that matched his own. As it
turned out, no beginning coach in Foxcroft
Academy football history – which dates back
to 1893 – ever started his career with 11
straight victories. In 2009, Coach White did.
The best previous record for consecutive
games won by a team with a first-year coach
was eight in 1937.
In the 112 years of team history, there
were 47 first-year coaches. Twenty-nine
opened the season with a loss. Eighteen
started with a win. White was the 19th to win
his first game as head coach with assistants
Gary Worthing, Ryan Taylor ’01, Wade
Witham ’09, Tom Nason ’80, Trey Merrill
’03, Mark Stroud and Joe Champeon ’78.
Three of the five first-year coaches
stayed just one year at Foxcroft Academy.
The other two lasted only two years. The
five most successful first-year coaches had
a combined record of 43 victories, six
defeats, and three ties. One was just out
of the Academy in the days when a captain,
8
FOXCROFT ACADEMY ALUMNUS
Coach White
or a former player coached if no faculty
member knew the sport. Four came
directly from college to teach and coach.
In 1908, the new football coach was a
recent FA player, Claude Boyle, whose team
was not only undefeated, but never even
scored upon going into the last three
minutes of the 8th and final game of the
season when a fumble was taken by a
Belfast player who ran for a touchdown to
tie the game at 5-5 (a touchdown was just
five points back then). The extra point gave
the visitors the win at 6-5 giving the team a
season record of 5-1-2. The game was played
at Doore Field, the site today of the Mayo
Street complex. Coach Boyle returned four
years later for just three games.
In 1922, Arthur Farley, a three-sport
grad from Bates College, came to Foxcroft
Academy to teach science and coach
football which was the last Academy squad
to use the field at the demolished racetrack
on Park Street for home games. Very few
details are known about his 6-1 season, as
there was no information about the two wins
over Brownville Jct. and Newport found
in the Piscataquis Observer or the Foxcroft
Review. Farley left the Academy for a new
teaching position after just one year.
There would be four coaches in the next
14 years before the fifth came in the fall of
1937. His team set the standards by which
all other teams would be judged. Comparing
the1937 team and the 2009 team, both gave
up just one touchdown in four games. Raoul
Bourgoin, just 22 and a June graduate of
the UMO where he played fullback, coached
the 1937 squad. He had only one assistant.
On offense, the 1937 team scored easily
46-6 over Belfast, 53-6 over Greenville, and 20-0
over Dexter. But, if it was held to just one TD,
then the defense shut out the opponents. A
0-0 tie with Cony in the opener was followed
by eight straight wins, the best for any firstyear coach for 72 years until White started
his career at Foxcroft Academy with 11 wins
and no ties. But there were no playoffs in 1937
which prevented the team from possibly having more wins. They did win the Piscataquis
County Championship. Bourgoin eventually
enlisted in the Air Force. Three years later,
he died in a plane crash at the age of 25.
Foxcroft Football
elds Football Legends
Up Remarkable Records
The amazing fortunes that Foxcroft
Academy had with first-time head coaches
continued two and four years later. First
in 1939 was William Soule, a Bowdoin
graduate, who stayed just one year before
going to Bangor to teach. He had the only
team never scored upon in the school’s
history with a 6-0 record.
Then came Roy Briggs from Bates
College where he was a student and played
football. His 1940 team was scored upon.
But he ended the season at 7-0. He would
add another win in 1941 before losing to
Dexter. After his second year, he left for the
military and did not return. It would be
27 years until the next Foxcroft Academy
team would go undefeated in 1967 under
Walt Beaulieu with Danny White’s uncles,
David and Trey Anderson, at quarterback
and running back. How different the history
of Academy football might have been if
any of the first year coaches had stayed!
Taking out the short losing season of
Boyle, the amazing stats for the six rookie
coaches – and their teams, too, of course
– combined amounted to 43 wins, three
losses and three ties.

Estate Gift Honors the Life and Service of Foxcroft Academy Trustee
Peter T. Van Aken ’59
On the evening of June 23, 2009, Peter Van Aken, long time friend, alumnus and
recently appointed trustee of Foxcroft Academy, passed away at the age of 68. In 1992,
Peter, along with Joan Brewster Garniss ’58, Mike Weymouth ’60, and Fred Robbins ’41,
helped organize the first ever Boston Area Alumni Reunion. When the first Development
Committee for Foxcroft Academy was formed in 1991, Peter was named as a member
and over the years continued to provide knowledge in helping Foxcroft to maintain its
excellence in education. In October of 2008 he was named a trustee. His business
expertise was a valuable asset to the Board of Trustees.
In Peter’s generosity, a bequest was made from his estate, creating an endowed fund
in memory of his parents Leslie S. and Marion T. Van Aken.
Peter is survived by his wife Candace (Wood), and the late Carol (Gustafson) as well
as a son and daughter David and Christina. He was also the stepfather of Samantha and
Shawn Margles.

For the 50th!”
Dan Chase, Pep Squad Leader, created this
motto hoping to have at least 50 classmates
in attendance the big 50th reunion. He has
asked Walt Lougee and Cyrus Doore to
plan a memorial display for the parade to
honor deceased classmates Johnson
Meade, Gary Hibbard, Richard Blethen,
Carol Noyes, Doris Grey, Matt Merrill,
Madonna Robinson Dyer, Delbert Rideout,
Norman Kinney, Carol Rideout Cole, and
Ruth Dyer Kirby. Steve Hall is finding
something for the class to ride on for
the parade and planning the Friday night
decorating fest. Joe Zilinsky is working
on nametags and Nancy Stone Page is
working on an endowed fund in honor of
the class to be presented at the Alumni
Banquet. Charlie Merrill and his wife Jane
are hosting a barbecue at their camp on
Sebec Lake on Thursday night the 5th.
Rick Page is organizing a breakfast at the
Bear’s Den for Sunday morning the 8th. For
further info, contact Dan at (830)990-2980
