MAKE BETTER DECISIONS

When life throws you a curve ball (something
unexpected for those of you not familiar with
baseball vernacular), you make the necessary
adjustments in order to be in the game for the
next pitch. In this life you will face a series of
challenges. Don’t kid
yourself. The goal of these
challenges is for you to
prove to yourself how
much you want to move on
in life. These challenges
are not meant to give you
something to brag over,
puff out your chest, or
beat your chest to indicate
that you are the king of
Ken Petty the world. It is something
meant for the building of
your character. Character building does not have
a graduation date. It is not something you are
ever “done with”. The moment that you think
you have arrived, another challenge will rear its
ugly head and ask you “Really? You think you
are done with this? Think again!”
Some of us relive the same challenges over
and over again. We end up yelling out to the
heavens, “Why this again?” I propose this from
personal experience. You never learned the lesson that particular challenge was meant to bring
you. Perhaps you have a character flaw that the
Universe, or God, or Nature (pick one, I use
God for myself) is trying to make right in your
person. Some will fight this, some more vigilant
than others. Others just roll over and wait for
the tide to turn, hoping that the challenge will
somehow, someway, go away. And there are
times that the challenge does go away, but not
for long.
Life is a series of challenges, or in a better term
teaching moments. Here is a “for instance”. Do
you yell at your kids when they under perform
which makes them under perform all the more?
Change the term “kid” and replace it with
“employee”, “friend”, “spouse”. Then replace
the word “under perform” with the words “don’t
meet my expectations”. It’s not about the target
of your wrath, it’s about you. When you point
one finger the other four (or three if you want
to get picky about what to call the thumb) point
right back at you.
The Dare is on. Are you going to face your
challenge and push through it, or are you going
to invite the same challenge back time and time
again? Let’s make better decisions and become
better people because of it. Good character is
priceless. Those that don’t have it, probably
don’t think pursuing it is of any use to them.
Good luck with that.
ON A SIDE NOTE
I want to send out my admiration to a bunch
of folks this past week who bonded together
to benefit one of their own. I’m talking about
the Lasagna House III Benefit. Well done my
friends and a very well done to the folks in the
area who took part in buying the good food offered from everyone taking part.
Also a quick shout out to my daughter who
brought into the world my first grandson. I
haven’t met him yet, but I will. Well done V.

SCULPTURE HONORING BELOVED STATION
AGENT TO BE UNVEILED AT TOMBALL DEPOT
A sculpture honoring Tomball Depot Station
Agent Ken Walden will be unveiled in a short
ceremony on Saturday, August 22 at 11 a.m.
Walden, a longtime volunteer and face of
the historic downtown depot, passed away at
his desk on May 3rd during the City’s annual
“Rails & Tails Mudbug Festival.
Created by local artist Shirley Scarpetta,
the sculpture will depict the iconic image of
Walden leaning on the “talking rail” along the
south side of the depot as if looking over the
future site of the Texas Heritage Railroading
Museum set to open in the coming months.
Walden was posthumously named “Volunteer of the Year” by the Texas Festivals &
Events Association at its recent conference
held in Houston. The award, accepted by his
sister, Karen Perkovich, will be displayed
inside the depot.
Funding for the public art piece came from
community donations and a grant from the
local Hotel Occupancy Tax.

PUBLIC NEWS: Ali Katz? Sounds like a clever
pen name. It’s catchy. But seriously, is it one for
you and if so, why that one?
ALI KATZ: I am laughing because that isn’t my
pen name, it is my real name! I married an incredible man with the last name of Katz, so that is just
what I lucked into.

with each reader most, because everyone is drawn
to something different based on what they need in
their life.
I am proud of the way it is written allowing for
readers to enjoy it in one go, or to pick it up whenever they find a spare minute and read a chapter at a
time. It works for real life and real people.
PUBLIC NEWS: In writing this book, who did
you use as inspiration? Why?
ALI KATZ: I have been inspired by my amazing
teachers along my journey such as Sarah McLean
and Gabby Bernstein. Reading their books inspired
me to find my own voice and gave me the courage
to share my unique stories and perspectives. I felt
like the book was something I could talk about
doing for the next ten years, or I could decide to sit
down every day and write, making my dream of
teaching and inspiring with my message a reality. I
just went for it and never looked back.
PUBLIC NEWS: Will there be a sequel to this
work? Perhaps helping women become more
efficient helpmates with their spouses or better
employer/employee?
ALI KATZ: Actually, my next book is for teenagers. It will be coming out in 2016.
PUBLIC NEWS: Would husbands/fathers benefit
from reading your book? Why? How?
ALI KATZ: It has been a pleasant surprise to hear
from so many men that have read the book and
gotten a ton out of it. I wasn’t expecting that! The
book is all about self-care and men need that just as
much as women. One gentleman wrote to me that,
as he was reading, he was underlining parts for his
wife to read. That made my day!
PUBLIC NEWS: Your book is nicely broken
down into three paradigms; Every Day Practices,
As-Needed Practices and Attitude Adjustments.
Interestingly broken further down into 40 chapters,
with the first twenty in the first paradigm. It is said,
or understood, that it takes 20 days to break a bad
habit and 20 days to form a good habit. The way
the book is laid out, it appears that was by design,
was it perhaps designed as a guide to the habit
changing directive?
ALI KATZ: When I teach people how to meditate,
I strongly suggest they work with me over three
weeks because that is the time it usually takes
to form a new habit, but that didn’t really come
into play in the book. Before I started writing I
brainstormed everything I wanted to include. After
my brainstorming I tried to make sense of what I
had written and it became glaringly obvious that
there were things I did every day, things I did occasionally, and things I learned along my journey. I
didn’t set out to fill those categories, the categories
created themselves.
PUBLIC NEWS: The book title lends itself to be
pre-judged as a book on being a better mom, but
you went far beyond that including being a better
wife/life partner, friend, and a better person to yourself. What are some of the responses from readers
who noticed that?
ALI KATZ: The book has inspired people to be
the best version of themselves which in turn helps
you to excel in every area of your life. When you
practice self-care you get to know yourself in a
whole new way. I joke that it’s kind of like dating
yourself! You are able to make better decisions for
yourself; you are usually less reactive and more
responsive, and more grateful.
Every single person can benefit from a self care
practice, especially moms. Since being a mom is
such a huge part of my life, it naturally became the
perspective that I wrote from.
I hear the most amazing feedback
from people that are moms, dads,
and people that aren’t parents. Hot
Mess to Mindful Mom has something to offer anyone that wants
to be priority in their own life and
take the best care of themselves
possible.
PUBLIC NEWS: The stories are
written in a voice that indicates
that these were, at one time,
speeches (or perhaps Ted-like
talks). Assuming this to be the
case, do you speak often and to
what groups mainly? What chapter
or chapters of the book seem, to
you, to have the greatest impact on
your audience?
ALI KATZ: I love that you said
that, because my favorite feedback
that I have heard from many, many
people, is that when they read the
book they feel like they are chatting over a cup of coffee with me...
or in my case tea because I am a
tea-aholic but I never drink coffee.
I wanted it to feel conversational
and be totally relatable. I don’t
pretend to be perfect in the book. I really let my
readers into my life.
I love public speaking and have recently been
doing more of it. Anytime I interact with my
students and clients, either in a meditation class or
as their mindfulness coach, I give 100% of myself.
I also pour my very best energy into every speech I
give, whether it be to young executives, a group of
moms, or teenagers.
I would have to say that the chapter on forgiveness has had the biggest impact on my readers. It
happens to be where I get the most personal and
vulnerable, and I let readers into the most difficult
times in my life. Everyone has a story, and I really
didn’t want to hide anything. I decided, with the
blessing of my family, to be completely raw and
honest. Readers have written to me and told me
that if I can truly forgive, so can they. I told my
story so candidly because I felt it was the only way
to really help people understand my transformation
and in turn to help them make positive changes in
their own lives.
PUBLIC NEWS: Before publishing, how often did
you revisit some of the chapters to make your point
clearer? What were your most challenging chapters
to write?
ALI KATZ: The personal chapters about forgiveness, friend drama and money issues were the hardest because they were so personal and vulnerable.
When I edited the book I added bits and pieces here
and there, but there were no major changes. I didn’t
change my mind about anything along the way and
delete a whole chapter or anything!
PUBLIC NEWS: If you could sum up your book
in as simple a sentence as you can, what would that
be?
ALI KATZ: If you are ready to ditch stress, find
balance, and live your very best life, than this book
is for you.
PUBLIC NEWS: As a published author, how
has life changed for you, your family, and your
relationships?
ALI KATZ: I am humbled by and extremely
grateful for all of the support that I have received
from family and friends. I am constantly tearing up
when I receive messages from readers, and I feel
fortunate to have the opportunity to share my message and help change lives. The book is definitely
a conversation starter wherever I go! People are
always asking about it which is so sweet.
My husband and kids are my biggest support.
My kids jump up and down when I report sales and
get another interview. They love it. My husband is
a huge help, and I couldn’t teach and promote the
book without him. We are truly a team, and he is
very proud of me.
I am busier than I have ever been with working,
being a mom, being a wife, and a friend. I simply
practice what I preach. I take lots of deep breaths
all day long! If things begin to spin a little out of
control I don’t beat myself up. Tomorrow is a new
day.
PUBLIC NEWS: Sometimes the advice you give
others comes back around to you. How has your
book opened up your own thinking and practices?
ALI KATZ: It’s funny; on a few occasions that
I have felt stressed or triggered I have said to
myself, “I should really read my own book!” Life
doesn’t stop being stressful, and it will never slow
down, but because of my self-care practices I have
a trigger plan in place. When I feel stressed or
overwhelmed I know what to do, and what brings
me back to center.
Since writing the book I am even more committed to my own practice because I want to lead by
example. When I say that these tools changed my
life I am not kidding. I will never stop using them,
because I will never go back to being the old Ali. I
like myself way better now!
PUBLIC NEWS: You mentioned that this was
your first book and that you are planning for a second. Why should a book reader choose your book
over another writer’s book on a similar subject?
What qualifications do you have that make you an
expert on the subject?
ALI KATZ: I went through extensive training to
become a meditation and mindfulness teacher at the
McLean Meditation Institute. I am also a certified
life coach, and as a mom of two boys I have lots of
real-life experience using all these tools.
PUBLIC NEWS: You mentioned “the Universe”
many times through out your book. Other great
motivational writers made references to things like
Infinite Intelligence, Master Architect and Invisible
Hand. Please share with us what you view to be
“the Universe”.
ALI KATZ: The Universe is a term that I feel extremely comfortable with, in addition to spirit. The
great thing is that these words can be interchanged
with any others that readers feel
comfortable with such as God,
Source, or even love.
When I talk about the Universe I
am referring to the energy around
all of us that guides and supports
us. The word choice doesn’t matter
at all, it is the connection to this
energy that is important.
PUBLIC NEWS: You mention
in your book that you are a huge
reader of others works. What do
you bring to the reader’s attention
that has not been brought before?
What previously known principles
have you been able to expand on
well beyond the original writers
work?
ALI KATZ: Many self-help and
motivational authors share similar
ideas and thoughts, but in their
own unique way, in their own
voice, and with their personal
stories. Readers will connect with
me because they like my energy,
my voice and they relate to my
stories. When I am doing my own
writing I usually take a break from
reading other people’s books because I don’t want
to be influenced in any way.
My five steps to true forgiveness are extremely
unique. I have never read about anything else like
them, and they truly came to be after I found my
way to true forgiveness as I write about. So many
tools in the book are like that. When I was brainstorming I asked myself, “what do I do? how do I
live now?” and that’s what I wrote about.
PUBLIC NEWS: You also mentioned mentoring
in your book. In what ways have you been able to
model, or put into practice, what you have written?
PUBLIC NEWS
ALI KATZ: I put all of it into practice before I
wrote it, so this is really my life story thus far. I am
speaking 100 percent from experience.
PUBLIC NEWS: How easy is it to get a copy of
your book? How easy would it be for a new reader
to digest your book’s content? Are there any suggestions on that?
ALI KATZ: The book is available in Amazon.com
in paperback and kindle version. I take care of my
whole life on Amazon, just like many busy moms
out there, so I wanted it to be easily accessible
online.
Obviously nobody is going to implement all 40
tools in one go. I suggest picking 2-3 that really
resonate with you and making them a part of your
routine. When that feels comfortable and you are
ready for more bring another into your life. You
will know when you are ready.
I can’t lie! I do strongly suggest everyone meditate, and if you need help learning come to me. I
make it feel easy and I promise it will be one of the
best things you have ever done for yourself. I teach

Attention Parents: Avoid Becoming
A “Hot Mess” this Back-to-School
Season in Three Easy Steps
The most anticipated time of year is right around
the corner-back to school season! It may be the
children who are preparing to go to school, but it
is definitely the parents who do all the preparation.
With so many supplies and very little time, parents forget to take a minute to breathe during the
mayhem. Meditation guru Ali Katz from Houston,
Texas advises us on ways to cope with stress and
alter that stressinto peace and gratitude with her
popular read Hot Mess to Mindful Mom.
In her book that includes 40 tips, Katz has three
popular tips that she recommends for back-toschool Moms:
- A One-Minute Meditation
- Expressing Gratitude for Self and Family
- Respect a Schedule
Some other related topics Katz advises us on
include: expanding time, mindful eating, self-care
and self-love. Hot Mess to Mindful Mom’s sole
purpose is to teach one to balance life and remind
moms to savor moments with their children. Her
formula is Better You = Better Mom.
Katz believes in order for one to live a peaceful,
balanced life, one must practice gratitude every
single day. Katz suggests creating a list where
one side consists of all the stressors in everyday
life, and theother side lists two things one is
grateful for. The list serves as a powerful, visual
representation of one’s feelings, bringing the
realization that even though life is stressful, there
is still so much more to be grateful for.
Katz says busy moms often admit they “don’t
have time to meditate, especially in the throws of
getting back into the swing of school.” She always
gets a pleasantly surprised reaction when pointing out that just 60 seconds of meditation a day
can benefit the mind, body, and soul, alleviating
stress throughout the day.
With just three long, slow, deep breaths, one
resets the nervous system, relaxing the body
and mind. Throughout the day, one can count his
or her breaths for 60 seconds, giving oneself a
minute to recoup and relax.
Early school mornings remind tend to channel
into stressful, chaotic mornings, starting one’s
day off on the wrong foot. Katz talks about her
Morning Mindfulness, where she gives herself an
hour to meditate before her kids’ school mornings
begin. For those with a tight schedule, Katz suggests at least 10-15 minutes for one to start his
or her day centered and peaceful. This peaceful
start should carry on the rest of the day.
Katz said “I wanted to find a way to not only be
a better mom, but also a better person. This book
is for moms that want to live a more balanced
and mindful life, allowing them to stress less and
enjoy more of everything.”

Integration is a multimedia dance project
that explores the idea of social conformity
and what happens to humanity when Earth
as we know it no longer exists. The evening
will present a visually stimulating environment that promises to capture the audience’s
imagination through a world where humans no
longer identify with individuality and conform
to the larger social mass.
Integration opens with a glimpse into humanity’s potential future in a disavowed world
depleted of all resources, and survival is not
taken for granted. Laborers, religious fanatics,
and beggars fill the stage as the remnants of a
once thriving society, desperate and struggling
to push on. The dancers move independently,
yet, synchronously as a single breathing being
each different and unique. Video projections
depict an environment filled with dust and
nothingness. Until one day when everything
changes.
Part two of Integration begins with a devastated earth where individuality has countermanded. The choreography is militaristic and
sharp depicts a drone-like atmosphere. Video
projections transport Integration to another
world, and the introduction of a mutating box
is the vehement symbol of conformity. Despite
the overpowering of the individual, one char-
acter has preserved her sense of self. Will she
escape, or be forced to conform?
Integration features choreography by Jaime
Frugé, costume design by Marissa Marsh, and
lighting design by Mitchell Cronin. Video Projection, also by Frugé, will trigger the creation
and destruction of a forsaken earth and the
emergence of Integration’s dystopia. Integration promises to challenge the audience’s idea
of choreography through the engineering and
construction of a morphing confined space.

choreographic debut in Houston. Jaime is a

In 1964, with the Cuban Missile Crisis fresh
in viewers’ minds, the Cold War at its frostiest
and the hydrogen bomb relatively new and
frightening, Stanley Kubrick dared to make
a film about what could happen if the wrong
person pushed the wrong button - and played
the situation for laughs. Dr. Strangelove’s
jet-black satire (from a script by Kubrick,
Peter George and Terry Southern) and a host
of superb comic performances (including
three from Peter Sellers) have kept the film
fresh and entertaining, even as its issues have
become (slightly) less timely.
Loaded with thermonuclear weapons, a U.S.
bomber piloted by Maj. T.J. “King” Kong
(Slim Pickens) is on a routine flight pattern
near the Soviet Union when they receive
orders to commence Wing Attack Plan R,
best summarized by Maj. Kong as “Nuclear
combat! Toe to toe with the Russkies!” On the
ground at Burpleson Air Force Base, Group
Capt. Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers) notices
nothing on the news about America being at
war. Gen. Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden)
calmly informs him that he gave the command to attack the Soviet Union because it
was high time someone did something about
fluoridation, which is sapping Americans’
bodily fluids (and apparently has something
to do with Ripper’s sexual dysfunction).
Meanwhile, President Merkin Muffley (Sellers
again) meets with his top Pentagon advisors,
including super-hawk Gen. Buck Turgidson
(George C. Scott), who sees this as an opportunity to do something about Communism in
general and Russians in particular. However,
the ante is upped considerably when Soviet
ambassador de Sadesky (Peter Bull) informs
Muffley and his staff of the latest innovation
in Soviet weapons technology: a “Doomsday
Machine” that will destroy the entire world if
the Russians are attacked.

my grades from him if I

Dear Ungraduate,
For someone who claims to be an adult, I do
believe a bit of maturity is lacking here. You said
it yourself that your dad has been paying for your
education, and obviously he has let you live under
his roof all this time. I can only imagine that
your dad feels like you are not willing to grow
up, and he is right to establish boundaries with
you so that you will be more likely to reach your
potential. If you want to continue to live at your
dad’s and finish school (and have him foot the
bill), then you need to comply with the rules he
has put forth. You should show him your grades
and plead your case that you need just one more
class to graduate. Maybe he will be willing to
compromise with you and let you stay on until you
finish that one last class. You should get a job (because you will have time to work since you’ll only
have one class) and offer to pay rent to your dad
for the extra time you will be living at his house.
And by all means, do your best in that class and
finish well! By doing all those things, you will

show your dad and prove to yourself that you are
on your way to becoming a mature adult.

My band is pissed off at our lead singer’s
girlfriend. She comes to our practices and goes
through our stuff when we are in the rehearsal
space working on our show. She has also interrupted our practice for stupid things, like needing
a ride to the store for cigarettes or booze. Our lead
singer is also our key songwriter and we don’t
want to rock any boats because he gets really
temperamental about his woman. We’re just tired
of getting ripped off when our backs are turned
and interrupted when trying to get our practice
time in. What should we do?

Dear Different Drummer,
Wow, sounds like your lead singer needs to get a
different girlfriend...or y’all get a different lead
singer! Since either one is unlikely to happen,
you and your bandmates must somehow deal with
the situation. It’s not fun walking on eggshells
around people. It may be better to gently confront
your lead singer and risk his temperamental side
to hash out some compromises. It would be best
to have the conversation when everyone is wellrested and relaxed. Don’t start with an accusatory
tone, but approach him with some positives about
his girlfriend...hopefully there are at least one or
two positives. Be solution-minded, and keep emotions in check. Be realistic in what you hope to
accomplish. You may not get everything resolved
with one conversation, but open communication
is so important in relationships. In the meantime,
lock your stuff up in your car when she is around
and be flexible. Instead of viewing her interruptions as such, use that time to chill with your
bandmates, catch up on email, or read a good
book. Hopefully the interruptions will become few
and far between. Rock on!

FotoFest will present I Am a Camera, an
exhibition featuring nine international artists
exhibiting work focused on communities; specifically lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered,
queer (LGBTQ) and questioning communities. I Am A Camera is about representation,
sexual orientation, gender identity expression
and society. The members of the communities
pictured self-identify across a broad spectrum
of sexuality, gender roles, race, class, culture
and politics. A varied and diverse population,
it resists generalization and traditional, normative expectations. As such, LGBTQ communities have defined themselves on their own
terms. I Am A Camera is an exhibition that
also performs as a conduit for sexual orientation and gender identity expression.
The artists in I Am A Camera explore a
number of humanist themes, including
relationships, self-realization and determination, class struggle, and community and space
building. Their works encompass traditional
black & white photography, contemporary
staged photography, film, video and installation work. They represent a wide spectrum of
sexual identification – lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, queer, and queer-allied.

Fresh Arts presents “Ultimate Justice” a
multimedia exhibition by Houston-based
artist Stephen Wilson. “Ultimate Justice”
showcases a series of photographs, drawings, notes, documents and videos based on
the artist’s experience working on the feature
length documentary Killing Time. The film
delves deeply into the experience of a family
whose loved one, Elroy Chester, was executed
by the State of Texas the summer of 2013.
Chester was diagnosed with a general learning
disability by all scientific measures. In 2002,
the U.S. Supreme Court barred the execution
of mentally impaired persons, considering the
punishment to be cruel and unusual. However,
the State of Texas ruled that because Chester’s
crimes demonstrated forethought, strategy,
and criminal intent, execution was fair punishment. The public is invited to a free opening

“Black Panther Party Power”

Fresh Arts presents “Black Panther Party
Power,” an exhibition by Houston-based artist
Phillip Pyle, II., Pyle will present a collection
of original images that recast some of the most
recognizable and outspoken activists of the
Black Panther Party as superheroes.
At its inception, the Black Panther Party’s
core practice was to arm citizen patrols to
monitor the behavior of police officers and
challenge police brutality in Oakland, California. In 1969, community social programs
became a central activity of party members.
The Black Panther Party instituted a variety of
community social programs, most extensively
the Free Breakfast for Children Programs, and
community health clinics. Federal Bureau of
Investigation director J. Edgar Hoover called
the party “the greatest threat to the internal
security of the country,” and he supervised
a comprehensive program (COINTELPRO)
of surveillance, infiltration, perjury, police
harassment and many other tactics designed to
undermine Panther leadership and incriminate
party members in an effort to discredit, criminalize and drain the organization of resources
and manpower.
In an attempt to reimagine the history of
African-American people in the United States,
Pyle will represent these vilified historical
figures of the Black Panther movement in their
new fantastic roles.

Painting with Pastels
This is an ongoing weekly course, beginning February 5, 2015. The class meets every Thursday
from 2:00pm - 4:30pm in the upstairs classroom

Painting in pastels is quick, easy, colorful, beautiful, very portable - and FUN! Handled correctly,
pastels will last many lifetimes and their pure
colors never fade, crack, or peel.
No stress and no pressure here to paint a masterpiece. You’ll learn how to turn “happy accidents”
into a part of your painting, or erase it - pastels are
very forgiving. Everyone will hjave a chance to
experiment with different techniques and materials, and you’ll develop your own unique style over
time.
For those who are new to art, you’ll learn the
basics of drawing and painting. For more experienced artists who are new to pastels, you’ll learn
the characteristics and techniques that are unique
to pastels. At the end of each class, you’ll have a
finished or nearly-finished painting to take home,
ready for framing.
Each student is encouraged to learn at their own
pace. You are welcomed to do a class-based
painting from reference photos provided by the
instructor, or bring in your own reference materials to use. We may also paint from life, or go
outdoors to paint as the weather permits.
During this ongoing course, you will:
-Improve your drawing skills, including proportions and perspective.
-Learn how to see and paint values, types of
underpaintings, both wet and dry.
-Create different effects using hard vs. soft pastels.
-Layer and blend pastels to get exactly the color
you want.
-Develop and use a portable pastel kit for outdoor
painting and travel.
-Know how to paint trees, clouds and water.
-Learn how to paint and draw from life and en
plein air (outdoors).
There’s no pressure to develop a masterpiece or
“do it right”. This class is all about having fun
and discovering the artist in you. You’ll have lots
of individual attention from the instructor with
helpful feedback so your paintings keep getting
better.

rules for appropriate times to eat. And don’t
always feel the need to eat when relaxing.
Try sipping on water or tea, chewing gum, or
simply don’t put anything in your mouth.
Mistake #3: Oversized Portions

Just because restaurants load your plate with
a mountain of food doesn’t mean you should
eat that much at home for a normal meal.
Remember that your stomach, like your
heart, is the size of your fist. Don’t think you

front of you.
To eat a little less, use smaller plates and eat
slower so you know when you’re full. Also,
remember that portion control also applies to

plan and completely rid the house of all
the food they enjoy, whether chips, sweets,
snacks, or any high calorie food.
This commitment may last a few days until
you can’t tolerate it any longer and you overindulge on what you deprived yourself of.
A better plan is to allow yourself a treat
every once in a while.
Remember that everyone makes mistakes,
but be smart and don’t let these common
pitfalls keep your from meeting your weight
loss goal!

losing weight like you
thought you would.
Research has shown that those who skip
breakfast actually weigh more than those who
eat three meals a day. Skipping a meal usually
causes you to eat more calories during the day
because you will end up eating even more
food later in the day because you’re so hungry.
So aim to eat three (or more) meals a day.
A healthy breakfast that will keep you feeling
full all morning contains protein and fiber. An
example would be whole-wheat toast and an
egg.

It is estimated that around 20 percent of
your daily calories come from what you drink.
So as you drink your juice with breakfast,

Last week was the 80th anniversary of the
passing of Social Security Act and the birthday of the Social Security Administration. One
Facebook friend posted a photo saying “20
Million people have signed up, have you?”
Another posted part of the FDR quote the
day it was signed into law. I found both sadly
amusing.
I started making
contributions in the mid
1970’s. It was anything
but “voluntary” and I
never “signed up”. I assume they are referring
to the “online statement
accounts” since over
300 million Americans
have Social Security
Numbers. I learned I

unfriend” the FICA by
moving to a right to work state like Texas in
1980.
According to my annual statement, I accumulated my 40 credits (no longer called
quarters) from
outside employment, but unless
a bill authored by
Rep. Kevin Brady
last December
passes that will be
lost. His bill seeks
to correct a bill
passes in 1983 that
sought to eliminate
a windfall loophole that allowed
teachers to receive
SS payments they hadn’t earned known as
“double-dipping”. He has submitted it several
times since 2004 and it was always shot down
because of the lack of funds. With the current
condition of the program, I am not optimistic.
Is there a bigger example of mismanagement?
The big government folks like to say that over
time things are generally “improved” and
become more efficient. I would beg to differ.
Demographics and increased life spans
should have been countered by inflated
incomes. They have not. Have you read the asterisk on the bottom of your statement lately?
Who knows what it will say this year.
Last year’s statement of benefits stated this:

changes and the lowering of expected return
rates from the original trust fund calculations.
If the same pattern continues, by 2019 the date
of needed changes will be 8 years earlier to
2025 and the return will be 76% for the end of
the “Baby Boomer Social Security Eligibility” deluge. That is a big IF. The number of
retirees started exploding in 2011 to 10,000
PER DAY.
Returning to my second Facebook friend’s
quote, FDR stated, “It will act as protection to
future administrations against the necessity of
going deeply into
debt to furnish relief to the needy.”

this pattern to continue for the next 75 years.”
I can assure you it is probably higher than
the amount who gives a rat’s behind about
Donald Trump and Rosie O’Donnell’s feud.

Navajo Weaving

If you find yourself near the North Rim of
the Grand Canyon and come to a spot called
Jacob’s Lake, you might find Jacob’s Lake Inn
and you might have the good fortune of staying
a night or two at this well kept family run place.
The family has been here for three generations
since 1924.
If you have a soft spot in your heart for textiles, the
warm feeling is sure to take hold in the rug room to your
right in the back as you enter the front door. John P.
Rich Jr., proprietor, has been working with generations
of weavers for forty years, honoring their work with
understanding and appreciation to offer this collection of
woven textiles. His mission is to support and encourage
those weavers, really to keep alive a cultural connection
by educating the public in the wonder of their work. He
is a calm even spiritual presence in his area of expertise.
He says that the weavers used to come from 100 miles to
supply his trading post. Now they come from 300 miles.
He talks about the feeling that there is something else
going on here—something spiritual in the honoring of the
work and selling it. He tells of the time that a weaver had
just arrived and unfolded the textile outside, a car driving
by stopped and said, I want that! They bought it without
even inquiring about the price.
These weavings have a spirit of their own: some hum,
some dance before your eyes.
These threads are threads of connection through Navajo
belief, nature and history through today.
The Navajo are known in this area as early as 1400
believing to have migrated from northwestern Canada
and eastern Alaska. The Navajo did not migrate into the
area with weaving but when they adapted it, it became
their own. Oral history indicates a long relationship with
the Pueblo-- they were influenced and left their influence.
The Spanish brought in the Churro sheep and a change
from cotton to wool in Navajo weaving. By the 1640’s
the Spanish wrote about them by name. In the 18th century the Spanish reported the Navajo maintaining large
herds of livestock and cultivating a large crop.
The sheep have a very distinctive hard and glossy fur
and undercoat low in lanolin that lends itself to this textile. Sheered and cleaned and carded to align the fibers
--each sheep has a natural color that can be hand spun and
hand spun again for refinement until wool can feel like
silk. The plants and vegetables offer their colors to the
yarn for more choices; yellows comes from the outside
skin of wild yellow onion and from wild mustard, blues
from indigo plants. Cochineal, a parasite beetle, found
on the fruits of the cactus can be crushed and boiled with
fiber for carmine reds. By the 18th century the Navajo
had begun to import Bayeta red cloth that they unraveled to make fibers hand spun in with the other wools to
supplement local colors. John Rich says that the weaving
is something that you have to be born to. It is a body
of knowledge that we would consider the learning of
agriculturists, mathematicians, biologists, organic chemists, finally spiritualists. It is a labor intensive and task
interwoven with task, just to get to the moment of sitting
down at the loom, the family must work together.
Navajo people tell us they learned to weave from
Spider Woman and that the first loom was of sky and
earth cords, with weaving tools of sunlight, lightning,
white shell, and crystal. The spiritual is embodied by the
balance of the design. It is four way symmetrical for the
importance of harmony in life and harmony brings
good health.
The Storm Pattern
Lucille Begay wove this Storm Pattern, knowing the
artist and the history of the piece is vital to the value

of the piece, John Rich prefers working with living artists and each of his pieces are well marked
by artist. Many historical pieces are anonymous,
though we know from the culture that weavings
were traditionally done by women.
In the four corners of the Storm pattern are
four squares standing for the four sacred mountains. Like in Biblical history these mountains
are real and found on the map: In the north is Mt
Hesperus in Durango, South is Mt Taylor in New
Mexico, to the east is Mt Blanco in Colorado
and to the west are the San Francisco Peaks in
Flagstaff. This is the area of the Navajo, and
inside this area the Navajo believe is protection
and strength. In the center of the weaving is
the spiritual center, lightning bolts connect the
corners to the center. Spiderwoman is honored
as a symbol on the center bottom and top as are
stylized corn stalks that ensure survival.
The Pictorial
Sarah Tso learned weaving from her mother
and taught her two daughters and her granddaughter to weave. About thirty years ago she
decided she wanted to record Navajo life as
she saw it in her youth, so she stopped weaving
Storm Patterns and geometric patterns and began
weaving pictorial tapestries. This piece shows
life in an old time trading post. The brown
square with the white squiggle line represents
a cow hide. The vignettes give a glimpse of
moments of weaving, standing at the counter,
people looking at the rugs, in the upper left
hand corner is a beautiful flag of the U S, a very
difficult technical accomplishment. Tso’s work
appears in several publications and she was a
featured artist in the 1994 Wheelwright Museum
show on pictorial weaving, “The Image Weavers”
Tree of Life
Frieda Manymules is a daughter of the well
known weaver, Mary Tisi, mother of daughters
that she has taught to weave, one of two families
that have been weaving for three generations,
born to weaving and carrying on the traditions.
The Bird Pictorial is what she weaves almost
exclusively.
Wide Ruins
The trading post name is the name of the style
of weaving. Trading posts encouraged weavers
to continue to weave successful patterns setting
up a tradition of particular styles. The Wide
Ruins trading post is no longer in existence,
this example may be one of the last of this kind
woven by a master weaver of advanced age.
Navajo weaving marks one of the few societies that has a direct relationship with its cloth.
This cloth offers threads of connection to the
Navajo spirit, to natural history and with the
connection to other peoples—the Pueblo, the
Spanish and the United States, albeit checkered.
It is women’s history. It is creating something
stunningly beautiful out of a rough landscape of
time and space.

GRAND RAPIDS MAYOR OFFICIALLY
DECLARES 8/21/15 “POP EVIL DAY”
Pop Evil have had their fair share of accomplishments over the years, but none have
hit as close to home as today’s announcement.
Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell has
officially declared August 21st “Pop Evil
Day” in the band’s hometown. “The City of
Grand Rapids appreciates the universal and
timeless qualities that identify all forms of
visual and performing art,” says the mayor.
“We have built a reputation of celebrating and
encouraging artistic freedom, creativity and
self expression. I appreciate the music that
Grand Rapids’ own Pop Evil creates for that
same reason. The group is a true original that
has shown its commitment to their fans and to
our West Michigan community.”
The announcement came as a complete
surprise to the band during a live TV interview
on FOX 17 in Grand Rapids.
“Wow, what an incredible honor this is, and
honestly we didn’t see it coming!,” says front
man Leigh Kakaty. “Our management and
label know how to keep a good secret! We
take a lot of pride in where we come from and
this will never be forgotten.”

Fit For An Autopsy has debuted a brand
new music video for their new song “Absolute
Hope Absolute Hell” exclusively via Decibel
Magazine. The new song is the title track from
their forthcoming new LP due out this fall.
“Being able to bring a visual representation
of our art to the fans is a big deal to us,” says
guitarist and producer Will Putney. Directed
by Max Moore, this is the first music video the
band has ever done. Putney continues, “Working with Max Moore allowed us to do that easily. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome
and are really excited to finally release Fit For
An Autopsy’s first ever music video.”
Fit For An Autopsy will release their all new
LP Absolute Hope Absolute Hell on Friday,
October 2, 2015 via eOne / Good Fight Music.
The new effort will be the highly anticipated
follow up to Hellbound released in 2013.
The band is gearing up for quite a touring
cycle through the end of the year into 2016.

hearing from the band off their recently completed LP. Wolf continues, “It’s a sound that

The group Hayseed Dixie was formed in 2000,
according to founders John Wheeler (aka ‘Barley
Scotch’) and Mike Daley (aka ‘Wilson Cook’),
when they had been drinking enough whiskey to
experience an epiphany: Bon Scott’s Highway to
Hell and Hank William’s Lost Highway were the
SAME IDENTICAL ROUTE!
Since John owned a recording studio in Nashville,
they, along with numerous friends, set about to
share their brainstorm through a summer-long singing, playing and recording party! The results were
the 10 songs on the album A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC (released
April 2001). None of the musicians on this album were credited,
but it charted on both Billboard’s
Bluegrass and Country lists.
Originally the boys called themselves AC/Dixie (as a play on the
band’s name) in tribute, but since
Sony Records didn’t appreciate that,
so they changed it to Hayseed Dixie
(say it fast 3 times & you’ll get it!)
They also first called their style of
music ‘Appalachian Mountain hillbilly rave-ups’, but that was quickly
shortened to ‘Rockgrass’ – and
sometimes ‘Maximum Rockgrass’!
Their second album was A
Hillbilly Tribute to Mountain Love
(March 2002) – this was their album
which first caught my attention
and appreciation! - with covers of many groups,
including The Cars, J. Geils Band, Aerosmith, Bad
Company, Queen, Ted Nugent, Spinal Tap and
others, along with two original songs. Every song
is a tribute to love (in some twisted variation!) This
album charted on three of Billboard’s lists: Bluegrass, Country and Heatseekers!
The third album was A Hillbilly Tribute to KISS
(Feb 2003), and obviously, it consisted entirely
of covers of KISS hits, and also charted on both
Billboard’s Country and Bluegrass lists. KISS on
Billboard Country – can you figure that!
Hayseed Dixie has released 14 albums to date, 11
of which I now have in my collection. One album
I don’t have – and cannot find anywhere – is Sjt.
Munchs Drikkeklubb Band (Apr 2011). Most of
the songs on this album were recorded in Norwegian, with the others in Finnish, German and Spanish – although all their albums are still recorded at
John’s Nashville studio! All of the groups’ albums
recorded for European release have bonus tracks
(usually in German), not included on US releases.
Hayseed Dixie maintains its largest fan base in
northwestern Europe, primarily Norway, Germany,
England and Scotland, and primarily tour there –
doing dozens of festivals and concerts each year.
Unfortunately, they rarely do shows in the US.
All the musicians are credited on the albums
now, although the only one who continues to use a
pseudonyms is John Wheeler, still being billed as
‘Barley Scotch’.
Hayseed Dixie’s instruments were, and continue
to be, all acoustic, and include (or have included,
since there have been many personnel changes over
the years) fiddle, banjo, dobro, piano, acoustic
guitar, acoustic bass, and mandolin.
John Wheeler also has another band called ‘The
Kerosene Brothers’, which also plays bluegrass flavored rock, as well as a solo album of his own – I
just ordered both albums from Amazon, so perhaps
later I can tell you about them.
Anyway, if you are a ‘Classic Rock’ fan who is
tired of listening to the same old same old 40 songs
being endlessly looped on the sole ‘Classic Rock’
radio station in Houston, or a Country fan, or a
Bluegrass fan, why don’t you give a listen to the
music of Hayseed Dixie? They just might be the
something new, something different, something else
to catch your musical interest!

Victor’s Restaurant and Delicatessen has
been operating and serving great quality food
since 1988. They serve the best breakfast and
fantastic Jewish style deli sandwiches; among
other yummy lunch and dinner fare. I remember the first time I went to Victor’s in the early
90’s, my girlfriend (now
my wife) was missing a
good pastrami sandwich
from up north where
she lived before moving
south. She heard about
this authentic Jewish
Deli that was famous
for their Reuben’s and
pastrami sandwiches.
Looking around, you
Nick Rama could tell this place
wasn’t your ordinary
Texas restaurant, with black and white checkered floors, a diner style tall counter, a pie and
dessert case with booth style seating and a few
rows of tables.
The menu is quite extensive, with all sorts
of breakfast foods, starting with French toast,
pancakes, waffles and omelet’s…along with
their house specialties of corned beef hash,
bagels and lox with cream cheese, potato
pancakes and even cheese blintzes. Victor’s
has a really good breakfast which is served
all day, but you even taste it all depends on
whether or not can get past their legendary
deli specialty sandwiches. Home of “The Best
Rueben in Town”, it’s made with lean corned

beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, & Swiss
cheese on grilled rye bread. The New Yorker
has your choice of corned beef or pastrami
with tomatoes, coleslaw, & Russian dressing
on rye bread and The Skyscraper is grilled
knockwurst, pastrami, coleslaw, Swiss cheese
on grilled French roll. I have had all three and
they really are the best in town in my opinion.
If you dig a little deeper into Victor’s menu
you will find diner favorites likes patty melts,
meatloaf, pork chops, corned beef and cabbage, wiener schnitzel and even liver and onions. Appetizers, soups, salads, cold deli plates
and even a “stay slim” section
of the menu are available.
Don’t forget to save room for
dessert; because once you see
them, it’s going to be a tough
decision between one of their
pies, cakes and cobblers.
Really, there is something for
everyone.
out. I noticed that they had Fried Zucchini on
the menu and as the day’s special appetizer,
so I ordered some, as she was walking away
I remembered that some places do theirs as
spears. I asked her if they were spears or
slices, she said they were spears. I said we
would go with something else because we are
not fans of the spears. She replied that they
were freshly cut and it would be no problem to
have the kitchen prepare them as slices. Wow!
A restaurant that will accommodate the customer’s wants was a nice refreshing change.

him of home. Lucky for us
the recipes are the same and
the service is as friendly as
ever. I recently visited with
my family and our waitress
Helena was just amazing. She
really new the menu in and
were crispy and well seasoned, and now they
are one of our family favorites at Victor’s. Everything we had on our return after a long time
was just as we remembered. What impressed
me most was that every employee looked
happy to be working there. This is definitely
still a family oriented restaurant and we will
definitely add Victor’s to our regular rotation
of go-to restaurants.
I got to talk to Charuvila, and here is what he
had to say:

you think keeps them coming back?
Clean restaurant, family atmosphere, warm
welcoming servers, customers feels like eating
here as it is like eating at home.
Customer service and friendly service is our
#1 priority. Everyone gets treated as if they
were a guest in our home.
Give us a brief history of Victor’s....
We were the first deli to be opened on 1960
W in 1988,
and then
Victor sold
to Georgette
after 7 years.
Last December Mathew
moved from
New York
and took
over from
Georgette.
Victor’s restaurant serving the Houston community for the past 27 years.
Eighty (80) percent of the staffs have been
here for over 17 years and few of them have
been here since day one!
What are Victor’s signature breakfast
items?
Eggs Benedict, Pancakes, bacon, chicken fried
steak, waffles, omelets and the Lox and cream
cheese plate are the best around.
Lunch/Dinner items?
Reuben, Rachel, Liver and onions, a variety
of other sandwiches, homemade soups and
salads, corned beef & cabbage, meatloaf,
lasagna, salmon, etc…
What made you buy Victor’s and how long
have you owned it?
I have owned it since December of 2014. I
have extensive experience in the food industry. I was watching Victor’s restaurant for 6
months before I bought it and really liked the
family culture and the teamwork. I also saw
the potential in the near future to grow in to
multiple locations.

Science-Fiction’s Greatest Film and the Man Who Made Me a Fan

We all have those moments when we’re
introduced to a classic film, and after watching
we find ourselves asking, “Where the hell have
I been and why haven’t I seen this?” These are
often moments we treasure because we unexpectedly develop powerful bonds with timeless
films, similar to that feeling of nostalgia we get
with films we watched as children. These types
of bonds are one of the
reasons why we love
movies.
The most significant of
these experiences for me
was my viewing Blade
Runner (1982) for the
first time, five years ago
this October. I have to
admit Blade Runner was
one of those films which
Glen Ryan Tadych took a couple viewings
for me to truly realize
its greatness and significance. And I don’t just
mean the significance in the history of cinema,
but the industry as well.
Technically, the first I ever saw of Blade
Runner wasn’t when I watched the film in its
entirety, but when one of my college professors showed a clip to demonstrate the power
of film visuals. The clip featured a scene from
the film’s final act, giving me no clue as to the
film’s context. That combined with the film’s
production value caught me off guard, and since
my professor chose to not inform us of the film’s
title, my first thought was, “What the hell am I
watching?” And I wasn’t in any better a state of
mind upon his revealing the title, as I simply had
a name and nothing more.
Some nine months later, I spent a long after-

noon and evening with my late uncle, indulging
in jumbo boiled and fried shrimp with homemade hush puppies the size of baseballs, all
while watching The Hangover (2009) and Iron
Man 2 (2010). Once these festivities concluded,
my uncle, brother and I engaged in one of those
spontaneous conversations that makes life worth
living; one of those situations where you start
out discussing a particular topic, and in five
minutes land on a subject bearing no relevance
whatsoever. Somewhere in that conversation
we discussed science-fiction and the future, of
which my uncle took a keen interest in. I like to
think of him as being a man of the future, having
a broad yet focused vision of our place in the
world. He was intrigued by the possibilities of
“tomorrow,” all while living each day at a time.
In that very conversation, my brother and I
dove into our appreciation and love for the Star
Wars Trilogy (1977-1983). My uncle, who generally came off as more of a Trek fan, without any
intention of putting down Star Wars, pointed out
that Star Wars was simply the hero’s journey,
while Star Trek “could be tomorrow.” What fascinated him was the idea of where we’re going
and our overall capabilities, and this fascination
was most prominent in regard to Blade Runner’s
depiction of a dystopian society, set only four
years from now.
All of this arrived at the inevitable question:
“Have you ever seen Blade Runner?” Our
answer being no, my uncle became determined,
if not adamant, to ensure we saw what he
referred to as “the greatest science-fiction film
ever made.” In his mind, he didn’t needn’t say
anything else. It all happened so fast, I don’t
even recall him telling us the film was about a
detective (Rick Deckard, played by Harrison
Ford) hunting rogue replicants (the film’s term
for androids) in a dystopian future. He simply
fetched his Blu-ray copy of The Final Cut—released in 2007 for the film’s 25th anniversary
and popped it in.
My initial perception of Blade Runner was
certainly one of awe, but not quite in the way
one might think. I found the film interesting,
and by that I mean the kind of interesting which
lands between intriguing and weird. I honestly
have to say what I found the most odd about the
film was Ford’s haircut, and I am completely
serious. I’d never seen Ford with hair so short,
especially being used to him as Han Solo for so
many years. This was actually the element that
delayed my recognizing Ford the first time I saw
the clip in my class. But the haircut weirdness
aside, I thoroughly enjoyed Blade Runner on my
first viewing. I wasn’t lost or confused at any
point during the film. Parts of it were funny, and
a lot of it was just plain awesome.
Eventually, I purchased my own copy of Blade
Runner, and I was able to experience the film
in a brand new way. I was able to observe its
many elements, both thematic and visual, and
get a better grasp on what the film was doing.
Blade Runner is more than a film about a man
(or is he?) hunting androids. From my perspective, it’s a clear depiction of “tomorrow.” It may
not necessarily be 2019—as 2001 in reality
was nowhere in the same arena as what Stanley
Kubrick demonstrated in 2001: A Space Odyssey
(1968)—but our current path will most definitely
arrive at Blade Runner, barring significant
habitual change. And just how close we actually
are to that point, society-wise, is rather horrifying when one thinks about it.
Blade Runner is a film that not only changed
science-fiction cinema forever, but it became a
demonstration of just how a studio’s intervention
can distort the creative vision of a film. The
various versions of Blade Runner released over
the years prove this, and having seen the theatrical version, I can say I am glad Ridley Scott was
eventually able to deliver The Final Cut, and that
I was able to watch it first.
Like many, I find Ford’s narration in the theatrical version awful, and the emphasis on whether
Deckard is human or a replicant—absent from
The Theatrical Cut—is one of the elements
which significantly contributes to the film’s
story. Vangelis’ soundtrack is one of the greatest
film soundtracks ever produced, in my opinion,
and not just for a solo artist, but period. It’s one
of my favorite soundtracks to listen to when
writing or for leisure, “Memories of Green”
[click here to listen] being my favorite track. His
musical choices are, at times, just as abstract as
the accompanying visual elements, making the
film all the more unique.
Blade Runner also introduced me to writer
Philip K. Dick, author of “Do Androids Dream
of Electric Sheep?” (1968), on which Blade
Runner was based. And while I’ve only read one
of Dick’s novels—”The Man in the High Castle”
(1962)—his ability to paint intricate images of
possible timelines with the most inconceivable
attention to detail has inspired me as a fiction
writer more than just about any other author I’ve
read.
Most importantly, Blade Runner stands as
a historic feat in filmmaking. When watching

(2007), one learns of all the extreme difficulties,
political messes and personal hardships faced
during the film’s production. Like with Jaws
(1975), the film risked never reaching a public
audience. But even with all of Blade Runner’s
obstacles, the film survived production, reached
audiences, and despite not receiving praise upon
its initial release, the film gained a cult following like no other in later years, especially upon
release of The Director’s Cut (1991) when the
most significant edits were made to the film—the
removal of Ford’s narration and the “happy ending,” which drastically alter the film’s tone.
Blade Runner’s greatest feature though, is
without a doubt its special and visual effects.
Pre-dating CGI, there isn’t one visual element in
the film that wasn’t created or achieved practically. And while previous films accomplished
this, such as 2001, Star Wars, Close Encounters
of the Third Kind (1977), Alien (1979) and The
Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner took what
each of those films did to levels beyond what
anyone had seen in a film at that time. The use of
such techniques makes the film just as visually
captivating today as it was in 1982, and is why
Blade Runner remains a must-see for newer
generations.
Although I initially watched Blade Runner
against my will, I in no way regret any part of
that October evening. Not only was I introduced
to this amazing film, but it was one of those
times when I really learned more about who my
uncle was. His undying love and intrigue for the
societal philosophies in films like Blade Runner
serve as a reminder for what makes film and
science-fiction so special. His way of thinking
in regard to society, as well as my experiencing Blade Runner at the age of 20 rather than
as a child, ignited that flame in my mind which,
everyday, asks the question, “Where will we be
tomorrow?”
