Storage Tank Protection
Foam Application Method: High Volume Foam
Application
(Design Reference NFPA 11)
General High Volume Foam Monitors (fixed or transportable) are effective tools for protecting storage tanks containing flammable or combustible
liquids. Foam monitors can be considered as the primary means of fire suppression for full service foam application onto open floating roof
storage tanks, or onto “fixed roof” tanks of up to 60 ft. in diameter. For fixed roof storage tanks greater than 60 ft. diameter, foam monitors
can be considered as a viable backup system, to be used in the event that the primary foam fire protection system is rendered inoperable or
unavailable.

Minimum Foam Application Rates Stated minimum foam application rates are based on the assumption that all foam reaches the interior of the tank, or “landing zone”.
Also, these minimum rates are for tanks 180 ft. in diameter or less. For tanks greater than 180 ft. diameter, consult with your Williams Fire
& Hazard Control, Inc® representative for current data regarding recommendations for minimum ThunderStorm® foam application rates
on specific fuels.

Minimum Application Densities
To use the chart, first look up the liquid’s flash point
and its water solubility. Determine their point of intersection and zone on the chart. Then refer to the data below
to determine the minimum application density. Examples
of common flammable liquids are listed in each category.
Flash point and solubility data on additional flammable
liquids can be found in the NFPA Hazardous Materials
Handbook and in other similar sources.

Design Considerations
Determining Water/Foam Requirments
Calculating the area of a circle: πr2 = ft2
FT2 x *Application Rate = GPM Water/Foam Solution
GPM Water/Foam Sol. x % Concentrate = GPM Foam Concentrate.
GPM Foam Concentrate x Recommended Duration (NFPA 11) = Total Gallons of Concentrate required on scene
*Application Rate per Square Foot
NFPA 11 recommends a minimum 0.16 gpm/ft2 application rate for Type III.
Although 0.16 is a minimum much of the industry uses it as a standard.
Williams Fire & Hazard Control recognizes as the tank diameter increases, increasing the application rate must be considered.

Example calculation for a 150’ Storage tank:
75 x 75 x 3.14 = 17,662.5 ft2
17,662.5 x .16 = 2,826 gallons per minute required flow
(2,826 GPM would practically be rounded up to 3,000 GPM)
3,000 GPM x .01% concentrate = 30.0 gallons concentrate per minute
30.0 Gal/concentrate for 65 minutes = 1,950 total gallons concentrate required (minimum)

Minimum Foam Concentrate Inventories
Calculation for minimum foam inventory is (where D = Tank Diameter):
Minimum Foam Inventory =
(D x D) x 0.785 x (Min Application Density) x (% Proportioning) x (Application Duration)
Example calculation for an 80’ Diameter Tank in Crude Oil Service:
(80 x 80) x 0.785 x 0.16 x .03 x 65
Add for 100% Reserve Inventory (if required)

available with six separate stems in increments of 2,000 GPM each. The nozzle is
the self educting type, incorporating patented Hydro-Foam™ technology. Foam concentrate is supplied via remote jet ratio controllers, or
foam solution can be delivered from an independent proportioning system directly to the water inlets. The nozzle is constant flow, with straight
stream to full fog capabilities.
The trailer meets all applicable DOT regulations and is constructed of deep channel carbon steel. Ballast tanks are an integral part of the
trailer, providing stability and traction to counteract nozzle reaction forces. The internal water inlet manifold is constructed of 10” I.D. stainless
steel. Eight (8) ea., 5” storz (6” optional) inlet connections with caps are provided for water-foam solution supply. The full system capacity of
14,000 gpm requires a total of ten (10) 5” storz inlets. Each connection is protected from back flow using a six inch (6”) full flow wafer check
valve. Two (2) ea., 4” inlets are provided (one each side) for foam concentrate supply. The tandem axle trailer has a gross vehicle weight rating
(GVWR) of 14,000 lbs. Mechanical/hydraulic surge brakes are activated via a heavy duty coupler terminating in a pintle hook connection. The
tongue is connected rigidly to the trailer using an A-frame arrangement for maximum stability. Non-skid designed upper decking. Stabilizing
jacks are provided at four points, providing maximum stability.
An operators panel is located aft of the nozzle. The elevated operating position provides a full view of fire ground operations. All controls
are manual gear operated and utilize state-of-the-art hydraulic systems to control vertical travel (+15º to +45º), horizontal traverse (from 15º
right/left of center), and nozzle fog/straight stream pattern.

Product:
Battler 2 x 10 Monitor / Nozzle
Description:
The “Battler” Monitor/Nozzle Trailer Unit is capable of large volume
discharge to elevations never before attained by conventional equipment to provide fire suppression, cooling, personnel protection, toxic gas
dispersion and more. Discharge flow rates from 2000-10,000 USGPM
(7571-37854 LPM) can be water or Hydro-Foam™ for extinguishing
liquids. All this and the operator is still afforded the freedom of smooth,
rapid horizontal and vertical movement and unsurpassed articulation
of 360˚ that only the “Battler” can provide, raising this monitor/nozzle
“above” all others.
Advancing the Fire Fighter’s Ability with
Equipment and Knowledge.
This “Hybrid” nozzle has the unique capability to perform as an automatic pressure or fixed gallonage nozzle. During automatic operation
the nozzle will respond to varying flows to maintain a nearly constant tip pressure, thus maximizing effective range for a given discharge flow.
Once the nozzle reaches the fixed gallonage set point (2000-10,000 GPM), it performs as a conventional fixed gallonage nozzle. This is desirable
for foam proportioning operations on storage tank fires or other hazards requiring specific application rates. This nozzle is capable of HydroFoam™ proportioning at rates up to 10,000 GPM @ 1% (8000 GPM @ 3%) using remote jet pump technology. The single 10” stainless steel
waterway construction provides minimum friction loss, maximum efficiency, and years of trouble-free service. The “user-friendly” gear operated
controls provide full monitor articulation of 360˚ rotation and down to +15˚ and up to +75˚ vertical travel with a minimal of input effort. Pattern
control from straight stream to full fog is accomplished via a full wrap-around handle attached to the outer sleeve.

Ranger3™
Description:
“The Ranger™”, featuring “Smart Nozzle” Technology, was designed for
today’s Industrial fire fighting and protection needs. Hazards involving flammable
liquids in storage and liquids under pressure have met their match with the New
Millennium Equipment from Williams Fire & Hazard Control, Inc®.
The “Ranger™” monitor/nozzle combination is capable of not only selfeducting foam concentrate, but can do so while maintaining a nearly constant
pressure (+/- 10%) and a constant foam percentage (1% or 3% selectable) regardless of the flow rate. Discharge flow rates from 1000-3000
USGPM (3800-11356 LPM) can be water only, Hydro-Foam™ (using jet pumps or automatic constant/selectable metering) or Hydro-Chem™
for extinguishing liquids and gases under pressure. All this and the operator is still afforded the freedom of smooth, rapid horizontal and vertical
movement that only the “Ranger™” can provide, raising this monitor/nozzle “above” all others.
This “Hybrid” nozzle has the unique capability to perform as an automatic pressure or fixed gallonage nozzle. During automatic
operation the nozzle will respond to varying flows to maintain a nearly constant tip pressure, thus maximizing effective range for a
given discharge flow. Once the nozzle reaches the fixed gallonage set point (1000-3000 GPM), it performs as a conventional fixed gallonage nozzle. This is desirable for foam proportioning operations on storage tank fires or other hazards requiring specific application
rates. This nozzle is capable of Hydro-Foam™ proportioning at rates up to 3000 GPM @ 3%. It can automatically maintain a nearly
constant foam percentage (1% or 3%) throughout the entire flow range while self-educting. It can optionally be configured to proportion foam from remote locations using jet pump technology (thus forfeiting the constant/selectable metering feature). The extensive “Ranger™” options list allows this nozzle to be Hydro-Chem™ capable (without Hydro-Foam™ capability) with “PKW™” flow
rates from 25 lbs/s to 50 lbs/s. The single 6” full flow stainless steel waterway construction provides minimum friction loss, maximum
efficiency, and years of trouble-free service. The standard tiller-bar control provides full monitor articulation of 360˚ rotation and down to
-15˚ and up to +75˚ vertical travel. Pattern control from straight stream to full fog is accomplished via a full wrap-around handle attached to
the outer sleeve.
