2014 From Kentucky’s Crossroads to Adventure
DO YOU KNOW YOUR
COLONEL?
celebrating 25 Years of the County’s largest
event of the year, the Annual World Chicken Festival is a
tribute to Colonel Sanders and his famous recipe.
Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried
Chicken, is one of the most highly recognized figures in
the world. Laurel County, Kentucky, located in the heart
of the beautiful Daniel Boone National Forest, is proud to
be the home of the Colonel’s first and original restaurant
established in the 1940’s. Lee Cummings, co-founder of
Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken, also began his career in
1952 with his uncle, Colonel Sanders, in Laurel County.
Kentucky Fried Chicken, pioneered by Colonel Harland
Sanders, has grown to become one of the largest quick
service food service systems in the world - with more
than a billion “finger lickin' good” Kentucky Fried Chicken
dinners served annually in more than 80 countries and
territories. But success didn't come easily.
In 1896 Harland's father died, forcing his mother to enter
the workforce to support the family. At the tender age of
six, young Harland was responsible for taking care of his
younger siblings and doing much of the family's cooking.
A year later he was already a master of several regional
dishes. Over the course of the next 30 years, Sanders
held jobs ranging from streetcar conductor to insurance
salesman, but throughout it all his skill as a cook
remained.
In 1930, the then 40-year-old Sanders was operating a
service station in Corbin, Kentucky, and it was there that
he began cooking for hungry travelers who stopped in for
gas. He didn't have a restaurant yet, so patrons ate from
his own dining table in the station's humble living
quarters. It was then that he invented what's called
“home meal replacement” – selling complete meals to
busy, time-strapped families. He called it, “Sunday
Dinner, Seven Days a Week.”
According to his 1974 autobiography, before Harland
Sanders became a world-famous Colonel, he was a
sixth-grade dropout, a farmhand, an army mule-tender, a
locomotive fireman, a railroad worker, an aspiring
lawyer, an insurance salesman, a ferryboat entrepreneur,
a tire salesman, an amateur obstetrician, an
(unsuccessful) political candidate, a gas station operator,
a motel operator and finally, a restaurateur.
“I've only had two rules: Do all you can and do it the best
you can. It's the only way you ever get that feeling of
accomplishing something.” ~Colonel Harland Sanders
Kelly Rae Burton will then be welcomed to the stage at
6:30 PM. Burton is a Dove Award nominated recording
artist, singer/songwriter and Child Advocate for
Compassion International. The Dove Award is America’s
highest honor for Christian music. Born and raised in
Somerset, Kelly Rae has written songs prolifically since
childhood and performed regionally for the past several
years. Burton was recently the opening act for the
prestigious Master Musicians Festival. Her latest release

Twenty Five years ago when the founders of the World
Chicken Festival decided what the main goals of the
festival would be, they came up with three. First was to
highlight local and regional entertainment. Their second
goal was to provide an opportunity for citizens and
guests to come to the festival with absolutely no money
in their pocket and still be entertained. The third goal
was to provide local nonprofit organizations and local
school groups an opportunity to make money to fund
their local activities.
Taylor Austin Dye from American Idol 2011 will then take
the stage at 7:30 PM. Taylor, from Booneville, Kentucky is
best known for making it all the way to Hollywood during
season 10 of the FOX reality singing competition. Taylor is
a 20 year old student of Georgetown College. At
Georgetown College, she is involved in many campus
activities and Greek life. She is pursuing a Music major
and Business minor. Music has always been a huge part
of Taylor's life, performing for the first time at age 4. She
also plays many instruments, including guitar, mandolin,
fiddle, piano, and ukulele to name a few.

London-Laurel County Tourist Commission to Host Fishers of Men National
Bass Fishing District Championship Tournament in 2014
The London-Laurel County Tourist Commission
will host the 2014 Fishers of Men Central Region Fishing
Tournament. District Championship Tournaments are
5-day events. The first 3 days are official practice days.
The last two days are the official competition. The
competitors must attend a meeting and are treated to a
meal on the evening before competition begins. Most
teams will arrive on Monday, October 6
and depart on Saturday, October 11. The
Tourist Commission expects to welcome
200-225 families for the week-long
event.
The Fishers of Men National Tournament
Trail is a nonprofit, non-denominational,
faith based organization. Fishers of Men
began in 1998. The organization has now
grown to one of the largest fishing
tournament organizations in the United States.
All of Fishers of Men tournaments are team events, with
each team consisting of two members. Fishing Teams at
44 Fishers of Men Divisional Tournaments have been
competing at tournaments across America
to qualify and participate in one of the 11
Fishers of Men District Championship
tournaments. The Central Region District 9
encompasses four divisions. These divisions
are Kentucky East, Kentucky South Central,
Tennessee Central and Tennessee East.
According to independent economic impact
studies of prior years’ Fishers of Men Central Region
District 9 Championship tournaments, the event will
result in nearly $200,000 in “new money” being infused
into the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Laurel County
economy.
The Fishing Tournament will be held at Laurel River Lake
in October 2014. The Tournament will
be sponsored in part by the Kentucky
Sports Authority. One of the primary
focuses of the London-Laurel County
Tourist Commission is to work with
Team Kentucky and the Kentucky
Sports Authority to bring athletic
competitions to the Commonwealth
of Kentucky and Laurel County. The
Fishers of Men National Tournament
Trail will result in temporary jobs,
increased tourism and a positive economic impact for the
Commonwealth of Kentucky as well as the local
community. The event will also strengthen the
Commonwealth of Kentucky’s image in the sports
industry.

Though the armies have long since disappeared, many of their trenches remain as reminders of what happened on
that October day. If you visit the battlefield and stand quietly behind the trenches you may feel your heart begin to
pound just like the soldiers' hearts pounded in 1861.
The battlefield looks much different from the etchings made in 1861. Most of it has been logged-over several times.
A few trails lead to the faint outlines of old trenches that remain. The remoteness of location of this battle makes it
unique, because you can still see these trenches. Battlefield sites located in gentler terrain were farmed over and
developed, destroying signs of the battle.
