At the feet of the Vercors
Mountains, halfway between
Grenoble and Valence, you
will embark on a memorable
descent of the Isère River,
starting near the historical
Sône Castle, with Vercors
cliffs and Royans red rocks
in the background. This natural
break in south Grésivaudan will
give you time to discover tuff
lanscapes and reed beds full of
aquatic birds before reaching
Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans and its
aqueduct and then go back.
Beside the Sône historical heritage, you will accomplish a botanical world tour through the visit of the
petrifying fountains gardens with their amazing tuff
concretions. Once there you may experience the
river as you would Mississipi, aboard a paddle steamer which will leave from Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans
and take you to discover Thaïs prehistoric caves. A
few kilometers away you can choose to discover either Saint Marcellin and its famous cheese, or Saint
Antoine, the most beautiful French medieval village
with its 13th century abbey, or else Pont-en-Royans
with its suspended houses. This tour will also prove
an opportunity to discover local specialties such as
Saint Marcellin cheese, ravioli, nuts… A delightful
day in perspective !
