In less than two years, Culture Days has taken flight across Canada in over 800 cities
and towns. Inspired by the amazing, 15-year success of les Journées de la culture in
Québec and spurred on by Alberta Arts Days, the second edition of Culture Days, which
took place from September 30 – October 2 in 2011, underscored the vibrant role that arts
and culture plays in the day-to-day lives of Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
Thank you, and congratulations to all who have supported and embraced this initiative
to share your talents and deepen connections in your communities. You have brought
Culture Days to life in endlessly meaningful ways. In all corners of the country, artists,
organizations big and small, municipalities, cultural workers and, of course, impassioned
citizens, are the maestros that inspire our communities with creativity and are what
Culture Days is all about.
This summary of results of the second edition of Culture Days in 2011 will give you a
sense of the impact Culture Days has made in its still very early stages. Thank you to all
who provided feedback and shared stories about your experiences. We hope it inspires
and encourages you, who have made it happen, and others to join the movement and
participate in this great celebration of arts and culture across Canada!

That’s just a tiny sample, a mere six of nearly 6,000 activities that inspired Canadian’s
creativity and ignited regional and national pride throughout Culture Days 2011.
Launched nationally in 2010, Culture Days was created to encourage Canadians of all ages, from coast to coast to coast, to share
and embrace culture and creativity in every conceivable form.
In its inaugural year, Culture Days started strong with more than 4,700 activities, attracting over a million attendees in communities
large and small, spanning every province and territory.
In 2011, Culture Days’ vibrancy was even brighter, with…
• a 37% increase in activities, approaching
6,000* nationally
• corresponding growth in audience, with attendance
topping 1.2 million**

Among the more than 1.2 million Canadians who participated in 2011 Culture Days
activities…
• an overwhelming 98% reported satisfaction with their Culture Days experience.
• 69% agreed with the statement “It is important to have events like Culture Days,
which celebrate the arts, heritage and cultural activities in my community.”
• 84% support Culture Days’ rich diversity, agreeing that, “We are all creative in our
own different way.”
• approximately one-third made their Culture Days outing a family affair, bringing
along at least one person under age 18; and parents across Canada reported that
they specifically sought out Culture Days activities with a child-friendly focus; and
• two-thirds noted that they’d discovered local artists and arts organizations of which
they weren’t previously aware.
Additionally, Culture Days activities inspired greater overall interest in arts and cultural
activities:
• 75% of 2011 attendees said they better appreciated how artists and arts organizations
contributed to their communities.
• 70% were eager to seek out and participate in more arts and cultural activities.

Across the three days, 2011 Culture Days activities totalled 5,843*, a 37% increase
over 2010.
The overall number of activity organizers (individuals or groups that enabled one or more
Culture Days activity) grew by more than 60%, from 932 in 2010 to 1,499 in 2011**.
Their shared enthusiasm was extremely strong, with…
• 84% judging their activities as successful;
• 69% stating that their expectations were met or exceeded, and an equal number
stating that they were very satisfied with public response to their activities;
• 56% agreeing that their participation provided opportunities to strengthen
cultural ties with their communities.

2011 Culture Days activities spanned 365** communities, 58% of which were participating
for the first time — an increase of 30% from 2010.
50% of activities took place in regional or belt cities, while 34% took place in major
cities and 16% in rural communities.

COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS
Communities with local organizers (more than half of which were municipal cultural departments and arts councils)
totalled 36, nearly triple the number from 2010, and these communities presented more than one-third of all Culture
Days activities*.
Among community organizers…
• 90% judged the activities in their communities successful;
• 73% said their expectations were met or exceeded;
• two-thirds of those who were part of 2010 considered their community’s 2011 participation a greater success.

Overall, the multi-level marketing and media campaign in 2011 generated an outstanding
275 million impressions, compared to 250 million in 2010. As a result, one in three
Canadians reported being aware of Culture Days.
The impact of Culture Days’ 2011 marketing campaign was powerful, generating
more than 145 million impressions, with a value in excess of $2.8 million (a 56%
increase over 2010).
The invaluable contribution of national media partners CBC, The Globe and Mail and
St. Joseph Communications provided widespread advertising and other support
spanning TV, radio, print and online. In tandem, these partners delivered 116 million
impressions, for a value of $2.1-million.
CBC played a vital role again throughout the country as National Broadcast Partner. CBC
highlighted Culture Days as a signature event during its 75th anniversary celebrations,
opening up 32 regional broadcast centres to the public and hosted CBC LIVE A KickOff to Culture Days, a sensational event from Vancouver that included a nationally
televised live concert.
Total media coverage (Culture Days-related feature articles, news stories, photo
essays and event listings), spanning 620 print, 779 broadcast and 205 online hits,
generated over 130 million impressions.

MEDIA AND MARKETING
Extensive and critical support from regional and local advertising partners and media outlets
proved equally effective at getting the word out in many communities, delivering a combined
86 million impressions, with particularly strong support from community newspapers where
coverage more than doubled 2010 results.
• Overall, 87% of community organizers solicited and received support from local media.
• Culture Days promotional materials helped deliver close to 900,000 additional
impressions, more than 40% of which were generated at the critical local level.
• The array of free online marketing and PR tools and resources created to support
Culture Days activity and community organizers proved immensely valuable in 2011,
with total users increasing by a remarkable 440% and item downloads, led by the
Participation Guide and PR Tool Kit increased by more than 125%.

Culture Days’ online hub, culturedays.ca, was critical to the event’s overall growth
and reach, in terms of the number and scope of activities, community involvement
and attendance:
• Between October 2010 and October 2011, the site attracted over 200,000
visits (by more than 143,000 unique visitors), 14% of which occurred throughout
Culture Days’ three-day weekend, an increase of 43% over 2010.
• Mini-sites, created for all provinces and territories in 2011, generated some
20,000 visits, for a total of more than 80,000 page views.
• Culture Days’ presence across all major social media channels also proved
extremely impactful in 2011, with significant increases in Facebook fans
(+ 102%), Twitter followers (+257%) and You Tube views (+103%).
• The Culture Days e-newsletter scored remarkable growth in 2011, with
subscribers rising from 1,700 in 2010 to over 10,000, a five-fold increase.
• A nd the Culture Days blog, created as an open forum for Culture Days’ staff,
members of provincial task forces and network participants to share tools,
resources and success stories, gained significant traction, with nearly
100 items posted, in English and French.

In addition to the enthusiastic and generous involvement of more than a million organizers
and participants, the huge success of Culture Days 2011 was made possible by the
generous support of a wide spectrum of financial and service partners, from the national
to the grassroots level.
Sun Life Financial again took a leadership position as Culture Days’ presenting sponsor
and introduced the popular Bright Spots program, enabling attendees and activity
organizers to create personalized itineraries for the weekend. Extending its Bright Spots
program, Sun Life Financial also enabled the Culture Days mobile site and provided
activity and community organizers with free Culture Days Bright Spots venue signage
via its 90 financial centres across Canada.
In 2011, Aeroplan joined Culture Days as a National Visionary Partner and launched the
Aeroplan Culture Stories Contest. The contest invited Canadians to submit their personal
arts and culture stories and drew nearly 32,000 entries in English and French, attracting
close to 400,000 page views on the contest website and generating over 20 million
impressions throughout the contest media campaign.

SUPPORT AND SPONSORSHIP
The Department of Canadian Heritage provided federal government support to
help build the movement and event while provincial partners rallied to support the
development of Culture Days in their regions, including the Government of British
Columbia, Government of Alberta (for Alberta Arts Days), SaskCulture, Government of
Manitoba, Government of Ontario, Ontario Arts Council, Ontario Trillium Foundation,
Government of Québec (for les Journées de la culture), the Government of New
Brunswick, Government of Nova Scotia, Government of Prince Edward Island, Government
of Newfoundland & Labrador and Government of Northwest Territories. Hundreds of
municipalities lent further support.
And local support proved immeasurably valuable with thousands of businesses and
individuals helping out. An amazing 80% of all community organizers and more than
half of all activity organizers who requested local support received it, with in-kind
and cash donations augmented by the donation of venue space, ad space and other
promotional assistance.
By the time the final 2011 activities wound down on October 2, Culture Days had
gained a firm foothold in every part of the country and had established itself in the
Canadian consciousness as both a beloved and essential annual celebration — one
that truly embraces our country’s, and each of its regions’, incomparably rich cultural
heritage and vibrant diversity.
And an even bigger and better celebration is in store for 2012, when the third annual
Culture Days unfolds September 28, 29 and 30.
