April Meeting
Hands-on Repotting Clinic/Workshop
Thursday, April 21st at Franklin Park Conservatory
Beginner’s Corner 7:30pm – Meeting starts at 8pm
Ever had trouble with repotting that badly overgrown plant? Does the thought of different potting mixes make
you want to head for the hills? What about dividing your orchids? Fear no more and come to our meeting on
Thursday 4/21. We will have a hands-on repotting clinic. Bring those plants in need of TLC, some spare clean
pots, and some bark or coconut mix, or moss. Our on-site orchid experts will help you get that plant ready for
the summer growing season.
Soaking the plants overnight will help to minimize any root damage in the process…especially for those
orchids in clay pots. Pull them out of the water an hour or two before the meeting and let them drain, so you
don’t soak your car seat. 
Hope to see all of you on the 21st!
President’s Message
2016 COOS Show –
Overall, the show this past weekend went quite well. We were in a smaller space, than any past show, but we
made it work. I want to thank all the people that helped with the show this past weekend. A lot of people
pitched in and we couldn’t have done it without their help. Those that helped include Justin Pepperney, Diane
Faridad, Paul L'Herrou, Tom Stinson, Pat Stinson, Suzanne Cavazos, Scott Bever, Nancy Shapiro, Cheryl Early,
Katrina Heap, Terry Stohr, Sandra Stohr, Sakinah Salahu-Din, Susan Allison, Tom Bell-Games, Rosina BellGames, Ken Mettler, Jerry Markley, and Edna Markley. I would like to especially recognize three of the
volunteers.
Tom Bell-Games did all the plant registration work prior to and during the show. This is a big job and is
absolutely essential. Tom gets all the plants entered (almost 300) and creates the nicely organized judging
sheets that are critical to the ribbon judging portion of the show.
Ken Mettler served as our judging chair. He managed and organized the judging teams. He helped that entire
process go smoothly. We have Ken to thank for his artistic arrangement of the COOS exhibit. He also helped
with tear-down even though he hadn’t originally volunteered for that.
I also want to thank my dad, Jerry Markley. We’ve been borrowing his pick-up truck for several years to
transport our stanchions, drapes, and other equipment. For the past couple of years, he has also helped with
set-up and tear-down despite just turning 86. You may have noticed the side rail improvements he designed
and made for our moving carts, allowing us to carry much more stuff in fewer loads. The six new tables that
he built for us two years ago have also come in handy.
Finally, thank you to all who brought in blooming orchids for our exhibit. I think it turned out quite well.
Thanks also to Tennis Maynard who put in an entire exhibit of his own orchids.
~ Dave Markley, President.
NOTE OF THANKS - Thanks to all members who contributed food or cash for Hospitality during our home
show. All contributions were greatly appreciated. Sandra & Terry Stohr

Show entries and results:
We had nine exhibits, 233 entries, and I believe three AOS awards, unfortunately, we don’t have a record of
the AOS awards but I don’t think they were awarded to any in our group. If I am wrong and one of you
received an AOS award, please let me know and I will update the info in our next newsletter. Thank you to all
of you who entered plants and helped to make our display so great. And, a big ‘THANK YOU’ to Tennis who
did such a beautiful job w/his own display. [I apologize for the less than stellar pic of the COOS display – my
phone camera is not great.]
Thank you to Tom Bell-Games for organizing all the entries and for all the work it took to get me the results for
this posting. 

Hospitality
We all enjoy having the snacks during our meetings but in order to have those…we all need to
pitch in and bring something. Thank you to those of you who have already done your part this
year. The rest…please help to make Terry and Sandra’s job easier and get your name added to
the list at the next meeting.
For this month’s meeting we have Pat Stinson, Rosina Bell and Katrina Heap signed up to bring
some goodies.
May – Scott Bever and Amy Stanley – we need one more volunteer.
June, September and October all wide open and in need of being filled. Thanks!
