Questions 2 Contact the RAL Executive Office by: Phone: (847) 517-7225 Email: [email protected] EDUCATIONAL NEEDS, OBJECTIVES AND ACCREDITATION Educational Needs The treatment of rheumatoid arthritis has progressed immensely over the last 20 years with the advent of biologic agents. The issues with infections due to immunosuppression continue to surface with each new mechanism of action. The ability to prevent and manage infections, at the same time treating the RA, requires knowledge and vigilance in monitoring for common and not-so-common infections. 4. Recognize atypical presentations in GCA and understand the new therapies and the limitations of GCA treatments and diagnostic methods. 5. Describe the revised classification of PMR, identify PMR mimics, recognize complications of PMR and update on current therapy. 6. Identify unusual diseases with common rheumatic presentations, and common rheumatic conditions with unusual presentations. 7. Describe the responsibility of the Louisiana Insurance Commissioner particularly in regards to regulating health insurance companies. Explain how to file a complaint when an insurance violation takes place or egregious policy is mandated. 8. Recognize how the changes in the healthcare environment will impact the rheumatology practice of the future. Rheumatologists are often faced with a patient that has become pregnant or wants to become pregnant. Managing pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and post-partum rheumatic disease is something many rheumatologists have little experience with. Bechet’s Syndrome can be difficult to diagnose and treat with the variety of manifestations that can occur. Learning to discriminate among the various conditions that can cause mucosal ulcers can be difficult. Understanding when and how to taper treatment in a Bechet patient is an important topic that is not often discussed. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION CREDIT INFORMATION Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) are autoimmune inflammatory conditions that may be extremes of the same disease process. The process affects blood vessels and periarticular tissues. Diagnosing PMR and GCA can still be perplexing with other conditions that can mimic these diseases. While the mainstay of treatment for these conditions remains steroids, there are steroid sparing therapies that have been studied. Discussion of these therapies and updated diagnostic options will be reviewed along with an overview of the 2012 EULAR/ ACR classification of PMR. Accreditation This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the American College of Surgeons and the Rheumatology Alliance of Louisiana. The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ The American College of Surgeons designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Rheumatic diseases can be challenging to diagnose. They are often missed by the primary physician. Common rheumatic diseases can have unusual presentations, challenging even the most experienced rheumatologist. Additionally, non rheumatic conditions can mimic common rheumatic diseases and present to the rheumatologist for treatment. Examples of these conditions with information on delineating rheumatic “look alikes” or unusual presentations of common rheumatic diseases is a helpful topic for practicing rheumatologists. Rheumatic disease patients often depend on their health insurance to maintain their quality of life and sometimes, life itself. Many rheumatologists have little knowledge about the commission that regulates and controls insurance companies within their state. There is a need to understand the pathway to file a complaint or protest an egregious policy that affects our rheumatic disease patients. Nurses and other healthcare professionals will receive a Certificate of Attendance. For information on the applicability and acceptance of Certificates of Attendance for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME, please consult your professional licensing board. There is an ever changing landscape in the practice of medicine that is being seen even within the practice of rheumatology. Eventually all will need to understand this changing environment, from the solo practitioners, to the employed rheumatologist in multispecialty clinics, to the rheumatologists in an academic environment. Educational Objectives 1. Describe the prevention and treatment of the infections caused by present-day and future biologics. 2. Explain how to monitor and treat rheumatologic issues in pregnant and postpartum patient with rheumatic diseases. 3. Describe the diagnostic criteria for Bechet’s Syndrome, and the treatment of the various manifestations as well as when and how to taper treatment. Special Assistance We encourage participation by all individuals. If you have a disability, advance notification of any special needs will help us better serve you. Call (847) 517-7229 if you require special assistance to fully participate in the meeting. 3 PROGRAM SCHEDULE RAL 3rd Annual Meeting September 12 - 13, 2015 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Industry Satellite Symposium Lunch Location: Orleans Room All sessions will be located in Lafitte, unless otherwise noted. 1:30 p.m – 2:15 p.m. Pregnancy in Rheumatic Disease Speaker: John J.
