A HORSE FOR THE COURSE
SHE LOVES A PARADE
He had been off the board twice since winning the
G3 Craven S. and the G1 2000 Guineas on the Rowley
Mile this spring, but, back on
his beloved course, Haafhd (GB)
(Alhaarth {Ire}) regained the
winning thread in style to take
the G1 Emirates Airline Champion S. at Newmarket yesterday. Always traveling easily
Haafhd J Herbert/Getty Images while sitting just off the pace
set by Chorist (GB) (Pivotal
{GB}), he avoided the drama when Mister Monet (Ire)
(Peintre Celebre) broke down before halfway. The
three-year-old took command at the eighth pole and
had the requisite stamina to carve out a 2 1/2-length
success. “My horses just didn’t fire from June onwards
and he was running seven pounds below his best, but
they’re com ing good now and running out of their
skin,“ said trainer Barry Hills. Champion S. cont. p2
Making her ninth start of the year at her fifth different track, Ticker Tape (GB) (Royal Applause {GB})
proved more than equal to the task, charging down the
center of the Keeneland
stretch before holding off a
game Barancella (Fr)
(Acatenango {Ger}) for a
half-length victory in the GI
Queen Elizabeth II Challenge
Cup S. Second to Mambo
Slew (Kingmambo) in the GIII
Miesque S. in November and
Ticker Tape Bill Straus
in the Blue Norther S. in January, she turned the tables on that rival in the Mar. 18
China Doll S. at Santa Anita. The winner of the Apr. 11
Providencia S. in Arcadia, she was a head second in
Hollywood Park’s GIII Senorita S. M ay 15 and fourth in
that track’s GII Honeymoon Breeders’ Cup H. June 5,
but got back in the win column with a one-length score
in the GI American Oaks July 3. Second, beaten a nose,
in the GI Del Mar Oaks Aug. 21, she prepped for the QE
II with a 2 3/4-length victory in Arlington’s GIII Pucker
Up S. Sept. 18. The competition was just what the
doctor ordered. “We talked about running her in the
Breeders’ Cup,” said winning trainer Jim Cassidy, “but I
told her owners, ‘she will run her eyeballs out and she
still might get beat.’ I was glad to be able to run her
against three-year-olds.” QE II cont. p2

CAUSEWAY CELEBRE
On paper, it appeared an open renewal of the G1
Darley Dewhurst S., but
Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway)
ripped the race apart with his
relentless galloping style to record a highly impressive 2 1/2length success at Newmarket
yesterday. In the process, he
gave his freshman sire a second

A Champion in the Making...
Haafhd broke Newbury’s juvenile track record when
winning the Listed Washington Singer S. at Newbury in
August before finishing third in the G2 Champagne S.
at Doncaster and the G1 Dewhurst S. at this track in
October. He booked his ticket to the Guineas with a
five-length score in the G3 Craven S. Apr. 15, and
came back to beat Snow Ridge (Ire) by 1 3/4 lengths in
the mile Classic May 1. He failed to shine when subsequently fourth in the G1 St Jam es’s Palace S. at Royal
Ascot June 15 and when down the field in the G1
Sussex S. at Goodwood last time July 28, but revived
his fortunes on this rain-softened surface. The surface
that helped Haahfd, however, was blamed for the reversal of Azamour (Ire) (Night Shift), who struggled home
in third. “We’re delighted with the way he ran considering that he hated the ground,” conditioner John Oxx
said. “It was just his courage and class that took him to
where he finished.” The 3-1 pick Doyen (Ire) (Sadler’s
Wells) also failed to fire in the heavy going, finishing
seventh in what his jockey Frankie Dettori described as
“horrible” ground. Click for the racingpost.co.uk chart
or the free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree.
Mister Monet Euthanized...
Mister Monet suffered a severe fracture to his left
hind leg and had to be euthanized. “It was a freak accident,” trainer Mark Johnston told Sporting Life.
“[Jockey Kevin Darley] said he felt like [another horse]
had gone into him from behind, but I don’t think it
actually did.” Clerk of the Course Michael Prosser
added, “Mister Monet was taken to the Greenwood Ellis
veterinary hospital in the town, but he had suffered a
triple fracture and there was nothing they could do.
They had no option but to humanely put him down. It is
very sad and our sympathies go out to his connections.” The three-year-old had won five of his seven
previous starts, including the Aug. 7 G3 Rose of Lancaster S. and the Aug. 21 G2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano.
He earned £118,735.

Also Ran: Phantom Wind, Mambo Slew, Humorous

Trying an off turf course for the first time in this
country, Ticker Tape was lightly rated as River Belle set
a moderate early tempo. Given her cue by regular rider
Kent Desormeaux approaching the stretch, she advanced four wide, set her sights on the pacesetter at
the eighth pole, drew momentarily clear and staved off
a solid late rally from the runner-up. “Mr. Cassidy has
been here all week and told me to stay as wide as I
could and when it was time to go, let this filly do her
thing and you saw what she can do,” the winning
jockey commented. “Today was reminiscent of her
previous races. I think it is obvious looking at her form
that she loves to race. She loves her job.”

Shamardal started his career with an eight-length win
at Ayr July 12, then wired the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood July 28 before a setback kept him out of the
major summ er tests. He returned here as a 9-2 chance
and, after racing hard against the stands’ side rail early,
never looked in danger of relinquishing the advantage.
The winner stretched further clear of the G1 Prix JeanLuc Lagardere winner Oratorio in the final yards. “He’s
got a touch of Attraction about him,” said Kevin Darley,
who also rides the star filly. “He has loads of pace and
kept quickening for me. He’s done everything right and
I would say there will be still be a bit left in the tank.
He relaxes in front and, if I held on to him, he w ould
have got an extra furlong as he hasn’t got tearaway
speed.” Jockey Richard Hills blamed the ground for the
disappointing effort of the 9-4 Etlaala (Selkirk), who
dwelt from the stalls, then raced freely before his brief
effort petered out quickly inside the final quarter. “He
towed me into the race and I thought I’d definitely be
involved, but he’s a fast ground horse and couldn’t
stretch on that,” he said. Click for the racingpost.co.uk

Frankie Dettori calls him “Mister Consistency” and
Firebreak produced his customary earnest effort to lead
from pillar to post. Snapped up by Godolphin after
winning the G2 Mill Reef S. at two, he has proved a
stable stalwart and has borne the royal blue to success
in the last two renewals of the G2 Godolphin Mile at
Nad al Sheba. Those exploits ensured that he carried
penalties throughout his subsequent European campaigns, but he showed what he was capable of without
that burden when fourth in the G1 Lockinge S. at
Newbury May 15. He returned to give four pounds and
beat all bar Pastoral Pursuits (GB) in the G2 Park S. at
Doncaster last time Sept. 9, but managed the feat this
time under a bold front-running ride, digging into his
considerable reserves to deny the late threat of Keltos
and Olivier Peslier. “Firebreak will now run in the G1
Hong Kong Mile [at Sha Tin Dec. 12],” commented
Racing Manager Simon Crisford. “He’ll probably have
one more season before retiring to stud.” Click for the

After overnight rain turned the ground on the Row ley
Mile to heavy, it was down to brawn, and M aids Causeway drew on all her inherent toughness to outgame
Penkenna Princess in a pulsating finish. After opening
her account in a Kempton maiden June 23, she was
beaten a head to Queen of Poland (GB) in the Listed
Star S. at Sandown July 22 before bouncing back to
win the G3 Sw eet Solera S. on the July Course here
Aug. 7. She filled third spot behind Playful Act (Ire) in a
strong renewal of the G2 May Hill S. at Doncaster Sept.
9 and most recently finished runner-up behind that rival
in the G1 Fillies' Mile at Ascot Sept. 25. Seizing the
advantageous stands’ side rail under Michael Hills early,
she raced in the front rank and had the overall lead at
halfway. The chestnut was headed by Penkenna Princess with 100 yards remaining, but battled back in the
final stride to win the bobber. “She’s very tough and
very gam e and a great advertisement for her sire Giant’s Causeway,” trainer Barry Hills said. “Her owner
Martin Schwartz has said she will stay with me for the
start of next season, at least up to the G1 1000 Guineas.” Click for the racingpost.co.uk chart or the free

including a dramatic dead-heat with Kasthari (Ire)

9. Reserved in rear by Richard Quinn throughout the
early stages of this contest, he made up ground on the
leading group in facile fashion and was still under restraint inside the final quarter. Coaxed past the game
Franklins Gardens with 100 yards remaining, he asserted in a matter of strides under a hand ride in a

Castelletto belongs to the school of hard knocks and
finally gained the rewards of a tough campaign with a
deserved first stakes success. She was no match for
subsequent G1 Cheveley Park S. runner-up Suez (GB)
when 2 1/2-lengths second in the Listed Dick Poole
Fillies’ S. at Salisbury Sept. 2 and was demoted to third
after another tough battle in the G3 Firth of Clyde S. at
Ayr last time Sept. 18. But, well-backed off that effort,
she gained the rail advantage early from her centre
draw under Graham Gibbons and disputed the early
lead before taking command at the eighth pole.
Strongly pressed by Cornus and Ryan Moore in the
closing stages, she dug deep to maintain her advantage
in the final drive. “Where a lot of them will be struggling in ground like that, she goes through it as she’s so
tough,” explained Gibbons.

Cool Conductor, who had failed to settle in his previous few effort, relaxed nicely for new rider Jose Santos
and came running late to become the first U.S. graded
stakes winner for his second-crop sire. Third to Prince
Arch in the GIII Jefferson Cup S. at Churchill June 12,
he contested each of the three legs of Arlington’s MidAmerica Triple, finishing third to Toasted in the July 3
GII Arlington Classic, a neck second to Simple Exchange (Ire) in the GII American Derby July 24 and fifth
after running off on the lead in the GI Secretariat S.
Aug. 14. He also raced keenly in last Saturday’s Storm
Cat S. going a mile over the Keeneland turf and weakened late to be fourth as the favorite. Taken back to
sixth by Santos, Cool Conductor saved ground for the
opening six furlongs, advanced into the stretch, came
out late and ran down Bankruptcy Court for a richly
deserved win. “Billy Mott put me on this horse, because nobody else could hold him,” the victorious
jockey commented. “He wanted me to take him back a
little bit. I got real lucky around the quarter pole. The
rail opened up.” Click for the brisnet.com chart.

Gunning For followed a win for a $30,000 tag at
Monmouth Aug. 13 with a 1 1/4-length victory in the
Sept. 6 Stanton S. at Delaware Park. Com ing off a third
in the Paterson S. at the Meadowlands Oct. 8, the bay gelding was the second longest
price on the board for his first
try at 1 1/2 miles. Allowed to
tarry near the back of the pack
in the early going, Gunning For
stormed into contention with a
four wide move on the final
Gunning For A Coglianese bend. He drew clear down the
stretch and then gamely held
off favored Rousing Victory. “He’s really coming
around,” jockey Joe Bravo said of the winner. “I had a
lot of horse at the half-mile pole and it looked like some
of the other riders were asking their horses. He had
them wrapped up pretty good on the turn. It was a
good effort.” Trainer Tim Walsh has been impressed
with his charge’s progress. “He always worked like a
good horse, but his first half-dozen starts were terrible
because he would always leave his race in the paddock
or post parade,” Walsh said. “He’s knocked that off.”
Walsh added Gunning For make now aim for the Nov.

The third-choice in the

betting this time, he set
the early fractions, was clear in the stretch and had
enough left to hold off the heavy favorite. “Last year,
he was a four-year-old and never raced before that, he
needed to learn everything,” winning trainer Hugo
Dittfach said. “He was an adult, but still a child. In the
meantime, the horse grew up and so did the rider. Now
we have an adult horse and an adult rider.”

Dr. Kashnikow, w inless since taking the 2002 GIII
River City H. at Churchill Downs, finally got the job
done here after finishing off the board in three prior
attempts at the Big M. The gray was second in the
Leader of the Band S. at Delaware Aug. 28, then finished fifth over this course in an allowance test Oct. 1.
Overlooked at the windows here, he was steadied at
the start and trailed the field after six furlongs. Taken
to the outside for the stretch run, the 2001 GII
Fourstardave H. hero rallied to post the victory after a
long drive. “It’s been two years since he won a race,
but he’s always been there,” winning trainer John
Fisher said. “He was caught down inside in his last race
here and he didn’t like that. Richie [Migliore] told me he
knew he was on a winner at the half-mile pole. I’m not
sure what’s next yet.” Click for the brisnet.com chart.

Elvstroem led from barrier rise to the finish and demonstrated plenty of tenacity fending off a formidable
last-stride challenge from 2003 Melbourne Cup victor
Makybe Diva to capture the Caulfield Cup, becoming
the first Victoria Derby winner since 1926 to complete
the double. The gutsy entire brought A$330,000 at the
Inglis Easter 2002 sale, but failed post-sale X-rays
before repositories became the norm Down Under and
was retained by his breeders. Elvstroem powered home
from the tail of the field to win the 2500-m eter Victoria
Derby last November, but trainer Tony Vasil gave
jockey Nash Rawiller open-ended instructions for the
Caulfield Cup, saying he would not be disappointed if
Rawiller chose to lead this time. “Nash and I were both
aware there was not a lot of early speed...so I left it to
Nash and said if he had to lead, so be it," said Vasil,
adding, “I was worried when Makybe Diva loomed and I
was glad to see the winning post com e up." The conditioner will monitor the horse this week before deciding
if he will start in the Oct. 23 G1 Cox Plate. Rawiller
rode a superbly timed race, slowing the tempo through
the middle stages. The jockey said his mount raced
fiercely early, egged on by a crowd exceeding 50,000,
then switched off mid-race, but gave it his all at the
finish. “I thought Makybe Diva might have grabbed me
on the line, but m y horse kept pulling out plenty,”
Rawiller said. “He did the hard way at both ends. He
ran good sectionals early and he was tenacious in the
last furlong. At 1200 meters, he had the audacity to
look around and see where the others were.”
Elvestroem has now earned A$3,363,600.

G.P. del Jo ckey Club Italiano co nt.
This contest, which has fallen to such German luminaries as Lando (Ger) and Caitano (GB) in recent times,
this year could go to Shirocco, if he can fulfil his enormous potential. Rated one of the best that Andreas
Schutz has trained, the three-year-old hammered the
point home when destroying a deep field in the G1
Deutsches Derby at Hamburg July 4. He returned from
a break to finish third behind Warrsan (Ire) in the G1
Grosser Preis von Baden last time Sept. 5 before fast
ground ruled him out of a tilt at the Arc. Of the British,
Bandari may offer the sternest threat if he can recapture the form of his half-length defeat of Sulamani (Ire)
in the G2 Princess of Wales's S. at Newmarket July 7.
He has disappointed since, most recently running third
in the G3 Cumberland Lodge S. at Ascot Sept. 26, but
will relish any give underfoot. Italy have captured this
only once in the last 11 years and all hopes appear to
rest on the unbeaten Electrocutionist, who made light
work of lesser rivals when winning the Listed Gran
Premio d’Italia at this track June 27 and in a conditions
race here last time Sept. 19. France are represented by
the duo of Fair M ix, who took the G3 La Coupe de
Maisons-Laffitte Sept. 21, and the shock G1 Prix
Vermeille winner Sweet Stream.

The Brits have taken 12 renewals of this race since
1980, and Merchant will bid to extend that fine record
this afternoon. Untried at stakes level, he left no doubt
that he possesses quality when winning a pair of competitive nurseries at York and New market in the space
of eight days in August and he added a decent conditions event at Newbury last time Sept. 17. He is joined
by Hearthstead Wings, who hails from the Mark
Johnston stable responsible for the 1997 winner Lend a
Hand (GB) and last year’s hero Pearl of Love (Ire). He
showed the right attitude w hen battling to success in
the Listed Stardom S. at Goodw ood Sept. 11. Becrux
heads an Italian defence that has proved unsuccessful
since Glory of Dancer (Ire) bested the foreigners in
1995. Becrux had Timaviet back in third when winning
the Listed Premio del Dado over course and distance
last time Sept. 26 and bids to provide the Botti family
with their third win in this event.

Prix du Co nseil de Pa ris cont.
Dance in the Mood won her first four trips to the
post, including the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) Apr. 11, but suffered her first career defeat when
fourth in the G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) over
1 1/2 miles May 23. In her most recent appearance, the
full sister to Japanese standouts Dance in the Dark
(Jpn) and Dance Partner (Jpn) could not close the deal
in the GI American Oaks at Hollywood Park, finishing
second, one length behind Ticker Tape (GB).
Apsis looked one of France’s most promising Classic
prospects w hen recording a facile score in the G3 Prix
Thomas Bryon at Saint-Cloud last October. Curtailed by
setbacks subsequently, he put up a highly respectable
comeback effort when second to Delfos (Ire) in the G3
Prix du Prince d’Orange at Longchamp Sept. 18 and
should improve in his second start after the absence.
Simplex was another juvenile who offered hope of
better things when getting to within 1 1/2 lengths of
Voix du Nord (Fr) as the runner-up in the G1 Criterium
de Saint-Cloud last November. He was also forced onto
the sidelines, but built on his fifth-place finish in a conditions event at Chantilly Sept. 6 when returning to that
track to win the Listed Prix Turenne in his second outing after the layoff Sept. 28. He had the Listed Grand
Prix de Clairefontaine winner Geordieland a head back
in second on that occasion, but meets that rival on fivepound worse terms here and will need to show he has
retained all of his ability to confirm those placings.

Laura’s Lucky Boy tired late to be a narrowly beaten
third behind the impressive Blackdoun (Fr) in the GII Del

race really good, probably better than he went into the
last race,” trainer Jason Orman said of the bay colt.
Laura’s Lucky Boy put an exclamation point on a threerace win streak earlier in the year with a four-length
tally in the May 22 GIII Will Rogers S. Greek Sun
opened his career with three straight victories, including
a two-length score over Laura’s Lucky Boy in the June

GI Secretariat S. at Arlington, the dark bay was never a
factor when eighth over a yielding course at Belmont in
the Sept. 11 GI Man o’ War. Triple Crown alumni
Borrego and Imperialism take to the turf after competing over a muddy track in the Sept. 25 GII Super Derby
at Louisiana Downs. Borrego, a maiden winner over the

CLASSIC, POWERED BY DODGE, $4,000,000,
3yo/up, 1 1/4m
Defending champion Pleasantly Perfect (Pleasant
Colony) had his final major work ahead of the Classic,
covering a mile and an eigth in 1:50 3/5. “He went
terrific,” said trainer Richard
Mandella. “He pulled up his
mile and a quarter in 2:03
and a little change. This was
his big [work]. We’ve built
up to it over the last month
to this point and the rest
will kind of taper off from
here. Because he hadn’t
Pleasantly Perfect Benoit photo raced in a while, I had to
give him something similar
to a race.” Owned by Gerald Ford of Dallas, the dark
bay will be making his first start since taking the Aug.
22 GI Pacific Classic over Perfect Drift (Dynaform er).
Pleasantly Perfect is expected to arrive at Lone Star
Park on Monday, Oct. 25.
Japanese three-year-old Personal Rush (Wild Rush),
who beat older horses by nine lengths in the 10-furlong
G1 Derby Grand Prix over a sloppy track at Morioka
Sept. 20, will be pre-entered in the Classic by his
owner Tomiro Fukami. Jockey Frankie Dettori, who has
three Breeders’ Cup victories to his credit, has been
tabbed to ride by trainer Kenji Yamauchi. The bay colt
is a son of Personally (Alydar) and is a half brother to
Mr. Andy (General Assembly), a Group 2 w inner in
Peru, and GSP Heavenly Advice (Theatrical {Ire}). Prior
to his victory in the Derby Grand Prix, accom plished in
track-record time of 2:02 4/5 in his first try over the
main track, Personal Rush took the G3 Elm S. over the
Sapporo turf Sept. 4. From nine career starts, he has a
record of 5-0-1 and earnings of $1,234,820.

BESSEMER TRUST JUVENILE, $1,500,000, 2yo,
c/g, 1 1/16m
J. Paul Reddam has purchased a m ajority interest in
Wilko (Awesome Again) and will point the colt to the
Juvenile. Trained in England by Jeremy Noseda, the
chestnut has won a pair of conditions events at
Yarmouth this season and was most recently a troubled
third in the G2 Royal Lodge S. at Ascot Sept. 25. “I’ve
seen videos of all his races,” Reddam commented. “He
doesn’t have the turn of foot that a lot of the European
horses have, but he looks like a real tryer and a stayer,
so w e’re hoping that will suit American racing a little
better.” Reddam added that previous owner Susan Roy
will retain a minority interest in the colt. Roy also raced
Belmont S. winner Sarava during the European portion
of his career. Wilko will be saddled by his current
trainer for the Juvenile before being turned over to
Craig Dollase in California. Reddam will also be represented by Elloluv (Gilded Time) in the Distaff, Pt’s Grey
Eagle (Pleasant Tap) in the Sprint and Sharp Lisa (Dixieland Band) in the Juvenile Fillies.
VO5 FILLY & MARE TURF, $1,000,000, 3yo/up,
f/m, 1 3/8mT
Team Valor’s Super Brand (SAf) (Royal Chalice
{SAf}), second by a half length to Stay Forever (Stack)
in the GII WinStar Galaxy S. Oct. 10, will be supplemented to the Filly & Mare Turf for $200,000. A Group
3 winner in her birth country, the five-year-old mare
was second sprinting over the Nad al Sheba turf in late
February and was third in a division of Saratoga’s De La
Rose H. Aug. 11 prior to her Keeneland effort. Pat Day,
who was aboard for the Galaxy, has the call.

LUCIFER’S STONE TO SELL AT KEENELAND
Lucifer’s Stone (Horse Chestnut {SAf}), winner in her
most recent appearance of the GI Garden City Breeders’
Cup H. at Belmont Park, is set to go under the hamm er
at the upcoming Keeneland November Breeding Stock
Sale in Lexington. The threeyear-old filly, owned by the
Team Solaris stable of John
Ball and Bob Karr, will be
sold during the opening session of the sale Monday,
Nov. 8, and is being offered
as a racing or broodmare
prospect by David Bechtol’s
Trysting Tree Farm. A winLucifer’s Stone A Coglianese ner of four of her six starts
this season, including two
additional added-money events, the bay filly has bankrolled over $405,991. Out of Ladue (Demons Begone),
whose dam is a half sister to champion Left Bank, Lucifer’s Stone was removed from consideration from yesterday’s GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup after suffering a minor injury.
HARD BUCK RETIRED Hard Buck (Brz) (Spend a
Buck--Social Secret {GB}, by Secreto) has been retired
from racing after emerging from a recent workout unsatisfactorily, trainer Ken M cPeek told Daily Racing
Form. Sent to this country following a ninth-place finish
in the 2003 G2 UAE Derby, the bay won his next three
starts, including the GIII River City H. last Novem ber.
Following a head victory in this year’s GI Gulfstream
Park Breeders’ Cup H., he ran Polish Summer to a head
in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic in March. Second in
the June 12 Opening Verse H. at Churchill, the
Brazilian-bred found the going too firm when fifth in the
GI United Nations H., but impressed in what would
become his final appearance, a runner-up finish to
Doyen (Ire) in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond S. July 24. “I didn’t think he’d be 100
percent for the races we had planned for him and I
didn’t want to run him at a lower level than he had
been,” McPeek told DRF. “We’re hoping to get a place
for him in Europe to stand at stud.” Also a Group 1
winner in his native Brazil, Hard Buck retires with a
record of 19-9-5-0 and earnings of $1,073,674.

TATTERSALLS OCTOBER COMES TO A CLOSE
Tattersalls’ new October Yearling Sale produced a
combined turnover at Parts 1 and 2 of 65.6 million
guineas, a sharp drop from the aggregate of 76.4 million guineas last year at the three auctions it replaced.
The overall average of 48,182gns dropped by 19 percent on the 2003 figure. But this year’s catalogues
featured 240 more yearlings than in 2003 and 555
more than in 2002, and Tattersalls Chairman Edmond
Mahony highlighted the problem of overproduction in
his end-of-sale statement. "What a difference a year
makes,” Mahony said. “We had the m ost extraordinary
yearling sales season last year with records galore, but
it has been a very different story this year. After a
decade-long period of growth, we have seen the foal
crops increase dramatically, and the sheer numbers are
now taking their toll. The total spend on yearlings at
Tattersalls over the last two weeks has been just over
65 million guineas, a total only bettered twice, but this
year the pot has had to be spread that much more
widely. We have never catalogued such enormous
numbers of yearlings...240 more than last year, and a
massive 36 percent more than in 2002.” He added,
“These are sobering figures and, despite good demand
for smart individuals in both Parts 1 and 2 of the sale
and significant contributions from throughout Europe
and further afield, the past two weeks have given all of
us involved in the British and Irish bloodstock industry
plenty of food for thought.

“The reality is that while the foal crops have been
rising steadily, we have been experiencing a period of
relative economic stagnation, prize-money levels have
plateaued, interest rates are on the rise, the property
market has slowed and oil prices have gone through the
roof. Combine these dynamics with a British and Irish
foal crop which has increased by nearly 2,000 in the
last two years, and it is little wonder that we have seen
a correction in the market.” But it was not all bad news
at Tattersalls October. "On a positive note, overseas
buyers, and in particular the prolific team of Greeks
accompanied by our representative Chris Imirziadis, will
be returning home with huge numbers of yearlings, and
we still have the Autumn Horses in Training Sale and
the December Sales ahead of us, both of which promise
to attract their usual cosmopolitan gatherings,” Mahony
said. “However, at their conclusion we will have to
assess how best to tackle the issues associated with
the record foal crops that lie ahead." Saturday’s trading
was headed by a filly by Pursuit of Love (GB) out of G2
winner Daring Destiny (GB) (Daring March {GB}), who
was sold to David Redvers for 6,500gns. Agent
Redvers reported she would be joining trainer Hughie
Morrison.

REVOLUTIONARY ACT (f, 4, Boston Harbor--Miswila,

was a disregarded 49-1 shot here. The bay filly pressed
the early pace, took charge after a half mile and powered clear to a 7 1/2-length victory over 29-1 longshot
La Tache (Hennessy). The winner, a half sister to Wild
Tempest (Summer Squall, GSP, $156,527), was an

Churchill turf May 22, but found the likes of Prince

in the GIII Jefferson Cup June 12. A well-beaten fourth
at this level over the main course in Louisville, she
returned to the weeds with a fourth-place finish in an

towards the back of the pack here, the 9-2 chance
rallied six wide on the far turn and fought his way past
