ALL EYES ON THE DASH
THAT’S A WRAP AT KEENELAND
A field of 11 will line up for today’s GI Frank J. De
Francis Memorial Dash at Pimlico, including last year’s
top three finishers--A Huevo (Cool Joe), Shake You
Down (Montbrook) and Gators N Bears (Stormy Atlantic), but the likely favorite will be Midas Eyes (Touch
Gold). The bay labeled himself as a top sprinter at
Saratoga this summer, posting an allowance victory
Aug. 25 and the GI Forego H.
Sept. 4, but could do no better
than 10th in the GI Breeders’
Cup Sprint at Lone Star Oct. 30.
Trainer Bobby Frankel believes
his charge may have had an excuse that day. “He bit his tongue
real hard in the paddock, and he
had blood pouring out of his
mouth,” Frankel told Daily Racing Form . “I’m hoping that’s
what stopped him. That and being so wide.” Shake You Down
Midas Eyes
Adam Coglianese photo
makes his first start since finishing sixth in Belmont’s GIII Bold
Ruler H. May 8. “I’d always rather be the hunted,”
trainer Scott Lake comm ented. “Obviously with him
being off we haven’t gotten the recognition that we did
last year. W hen horses have the time off you are always curious to see if they come back the same.”
The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale concluded Friday with a record average, a record-equaling
median and the third highest gross in the history of the
auction. “The sale started strong and continued strong
to the very end,” said Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. “There was a strong premium on young mares and
for weanlings by freshman sires.” A total of 35 horses
brought $1 million or more, including three for $4 million or greater. By comparison, 23 horses sold for $1
million or more during the 2003 breeding stock sale.
The highest-priced lot on the final day was hip 4431,
the eight-year-old broodmare Mist on the Hill (Mt.
Livermore), acquired by Classic Bloodstock for
$41,000. Offered by Windfields Farm as agent, the bay
is in foal to Canadian champion A Fleets Dancer. Topping the weanlings at Friday’s session was hip 4225, a
filly from the first crop of Vinery stallion Yonaguska.
Cobalt Investments LLC signed the ticket for $37,000
for the bay from the consignment of Patricia Clark.

KRIS DEAD A champion on the racecourse who became a leading sire, Kris (GB) (Sharpen Up {GB}--Doubly Sure {GB}, by Reliance {Fr})
died of heart failure in his paddock at Plantation Stud. The 28year-old stallion had been pensioned since 2002. A full brother
to champion and successful sire,
Diesis (GB), Kris was honored as
Europe’s top miler at both three
Kris (1976-2004)
and four. He won 14 of 16 caPlantation Stud photo
reer starts for trainer Henry
Cecil, capturing the G1 Sussex
S., the G2 Queen Elizabeth II S., G2 St. James’s Palace
S., G2 Waterford Crystal Mile and the G2 Lockinge S.
In his only two losses, the chestnut ran second in both
the G1 2000 Guineas and the G2 Queen Elizabeth II S.
From his first crop came Oh So Sharp (GB), who swept
England’s Triple Crown for fillies by winning the G1
Oaks S., G1 1000 Guineas and the G1 St. Leger S. Her
exploits led to Kris being champion sire in Britain in
1985, and he was also the leading British-based sire in
1986 and 1987. Best known as a sire of top fillies, he
has become a successful broodmare sire. In that capacity, Kris has been represented by Group 1 winners
Doyen (Ire), Kiri’s Clown, Lend a Hand (GB), Moonshell
(Ire), Okawango and Rose Gypsy (GB).

The final turf stakes of the year in New York drew an
evenly matched field that lacks a clear standout. New
York-bred Irish Colonial snapped a streak of four thirdplace finishes with a late-running tally in the restricted
Mohaw k H. at Belmont Oct. 23. He’s bred to handle
the added ground--the Mohawk was nine panels--and
should have a solid enough pace to run at. “We’ve been
pointing for this race since the summ er,” said his
trainer, Randy Schulhofer, who added that his charge
“likes a little give in the ground,” should it rain. European invader Alost, a winner going a m ile and a half in
the French provinces in mid-October, will be getting
Lasix for his U.S. debut. The distance will be no problem for the four-year-old, but he’s prone to acting up at
the gate and might be handful under jockey Tony Farina. The improving Shug McGaughey-trained Sailaway
closed into slow fractions to com plete the trifecta in
the Oct. 30 GII Knickerbocker H. and will be running
late here.

31 a bit under the radar, posting a five-length victory at
odds of 14-1, then defeated odds-on Roman Ruler by a
neck in the GII Del Mar Futurity Sept. 8. His connections decided to skip the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in
favor of the Prevue and the GI Hollywood Futurity Dec.
18. “It’s pretty much gone according to plan,” trainer
Ron Ellis told Daily Racing Form. “I think he’s bigger. I
would think the two months have done him some good.
He looks as good or better than he did at Del Mar.”
Seize the Day aired by 11 lengths at Santa Anita Oct.
11 and could be any kind.
GOING FOR A RECORD
“Another record which could possibly fall this year is Storm Cat’s
single-year stakes winner standard of 24, set in 1999. A.P. INDY
has sired 20 (now 21) stakes winners so far in 2004 and is the only
American stallion other than Storm Cat to have reached that plateau.”

MADCAP ESCAPADE TURNS IN SHARP WORK
Madcap Escapade (Hennessy), winner of the GI Ashland
S., returned to serious training Friday with a sharp
three-furlong breeze in
:36.69 over a sloppy
track at Churchill Downs.
“I thought that was about
as slow as you could get
her,” trainer Frank Brothers said. “The most important thing is that she
did it well within herself
and she seemed to cool
Equi-Photo
out fine. She’s been training great and, at this point, I’m very happy with her.”
The sophomore filly hasn’t raced since suffering her
first career defeat, while third behind Ashado in the GI
Kentucky Oaks
Apr. 30. She suffered a non-displaced hairline fracture
of the hip while preparing for a start in the GI Acorn S.
at Belmont. “We’re going to take our time,” Brothers
added. “We’ll go to Miami and probably start down
there. There’s no rush on her. I don’t even know where
we w ould start her.”

Sept. 23. A non-threatening fifth in the GIII Sport Page
H. at that track Oct. 31, he was sent to post the
crowd’s pick dropping in class. After losing ground
because of a bobbled start, Personal Touch settled off
the lead while racing undercover, then took aim at the

The former proved especially reluctant in the closing

there, opening up by three lengths as they entered the

back to take a 10-furlong first-level allowance over
Belmont’s sod Oct. 14 and was the tepid 5-2 pick
scaling back a panel. Well placed in fourth racing several paths off the rail, he was part of a crush of horses

Fundraiser for Injured D’Amico at Furlongs:
A fundraiser for jockey Tony D’Amico, who was
injured in a spill at Churchill Downs Nov. 3, will be held
Monday at Furlongs Restaurant on Frankfort Ave. in
Louisville, Kentucky. The benefit runs from 6-10 p.m. A
$25 per person door charge will include dinner, a cash
bar, silent and live auctions, and the chance to mingle
with jockeys and other racetrack characters. D’Amico
spent two weeks at the University of Louisville Hospital. He was released Tuesday night and is recovering at
home from two surgeries to repair a crushed rib cage
and broken shoulder. A special account has been
opened for D’Amico at Fifth Third Bank; donations are
welcome. For more information, contact JoLynn

ROCK TOP OF THE POPS A weanling colt from the
SOVIET SONG CAREER IN DOUBT The racing
career of Soviet Song (Ire) (Marju {Ire}), recent winner
of the Cartier Older Horse of the Year award, is in
doubt after it was revealed the four-year-old filly has
been “intermittently lame” since finising sixth in the G1
Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot Sept. 25. Matthew
Budden, racing manager for the 15,000-strong Elite
Racing Club, told Racing Post: “The intention always
was for Soviet Song to race on next year, but she has a
little injury and she has been intermittently lame since
September. It’s a fetlock injury, a small flake has come
off one of the sesamoid bones. It’s a minor thing, but
not something you would want a top athlete to have.
The vet didn’t recommend any surgery, just time off to
recover. We will know more around January when she
will be x-rayed and scanned again and we will see
whether, in the vet’s opinion, she can race on [or not].
If it will hinder her training she will be retired to our
breeding program, but we hope she will race again.”
Soviet Song secured a hat trick of G1 victories earlier
this term, winning the Falmouth S. at Newm arket July
6, the Sussex S. at Goodwood July 28 and the Matron
S. at Leopardstown Sept. 11.
