The 2014 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale
concluded its 11-day run yesterday in Lexington, and
the prognosticators who eyed a stable market going in
couldn=t have gotten nearer
to the bulls-eye. With one
more session and 338
more horses through the
ring from last year, a total
of 2,512 horses sold for
$205,899,500. The
average of $81,966 was
up just 2.1%, while the
median of $35,000 was
unchanged. The cumulative
Sale topper Aloof Keeneland Photo RNA rate was 21.82%.
Last year, it was an
exceptional 14.5%.
Last year=s sale, boosted by the dispersal of E. Paul
Robsham Stable, saw 2,457 horses sold for
$197,189,000, an average of $80,256. The 2013
auction was toped by the $4-million Awesome Maria, a
member of the Robsham dispersal.
Topping the sale was the $3.9-million Aloof (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}), a group-winning daughter of champion
Airwave (GB) (Air Express {Ire}) who sold to Mandy
Pope=s Whisper Hill Farm. Aloof was offered in foal to
War Front by Paramount Sales as Hip 246.
Also in foal to War Front was the sale=s secondhighest lot, the $3.6-million Naples Bay (Giant=s
Causeway), who was hammered down to Coolmore=s
M.V. Magnier. Claiborne Farm consigned the MGSW
half to Medaglia d=Oro as Hip 156.
Those mares helped set the stage for a lively week
and a half of trading.
AWe talk about it all the time--if we start out well in
Book 1, it will carry through the rest of the sale, and
this sale more than any other proved it,@ said Keeneland
Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. AThe strength and
depth in Book 1 definitely carried through.@
There were 11 different buying entities who
purchased November=s 18 seven-figure horses-compared to the 14 who sold in 2013. Included among
them was new shooter China Horse Club, which came
away with the $2.8-million Iotapa (Afleet Alex) and the
$1.5-million Last Full Measure (Empire Maker).
AWe saw new buyers play at the top end, which is
very good for our industry, and we saw regular
commercial breeders reinvesting in our industry, and at
a high level,@ said Russell. AWe had 18 million-dollar
horses, and it=s interesting to note that they were
pretty evenly split between domestic and international
buyers. Before, maybe they weighted it a little more
toward the international side, so to see the domestic
bench stand up and get involved is encouraging.@

on the passing of the Hall of Famer across social media
and via other outlets, Friday=s ceremony gave those
who worked closest with Cigar during his 15 years in
residence at the Horse Park an opportunity to express

MARQUARDT WINS BERGSTEIN AWARD
Lucas Marquardt was presented with Team Valor
International=s third-annual Stan Bergstein Writing
Award Friday for his story in the Thoroughbred Daily
News magazine entitled Is This the Death of Synthetic
Racing? And If So, Why?. The piece, which was
published in August, takes an in-depth look at the role
that synthetic surfaces play in the safety of
Thoroughbreds, featuring interviews with a number of
prominent horsepeople, veterinarians and racetrack

Don Alberto Corp. was November=s leading buyer for
the second straight year. It purchased nine horses for
$8,575,000, an average of $952,778.
One of the highlights of the auction was the sale of a
North American record weanling. A Tapit greatgranddaughter of Serena=s Song (Rahy) from SW
Serena=s Cat (Storm Cat) brought a whopping
$3-million winning bid from Bridlewood Farm=s George
Isaacs. The filly was bred by Hill >n= Dale Farm and Dell
Ridge Farm and was consigned by Hill >n= Dale as Hip

AWe use the phrase collector=s item,@ said Russell.
AThat Tapit foal will never see the light of another
auction ring. This was the only opportunity people
would have to buy her, and when people understood
that, they stepped up. It's the highest-price >racing
prospect' we sold this year--higher than the two
$2.2-million colts we sold at September--and it was
two end users going head-to-head.@ Mandy Pope was
the direct underbidder.
There were two primary takeaways from November,
said Russell. First, quality continues to sell. Second,
breeders are beginning to take a long-term view of the
market.
AWe had two very good Septembers [in 2012 and
2013] and a stable market this year, and that has
encouraged people to invest long term,@ he said. AThe
great thing is that people want to own a mare now. In
past years, they didn=t want to. Even some people who
got out of the business got back in. And we keep on
talking about it, but quality sells.@ Cont. p4

AHere, it was quality in the millions, quality in the
$100,000s, quality in the $50,000s. At every level,
quality is selling. On Thursday, we had a six-figure
horse on the second-to-last day, because she was a
nice mare, and people are willing to give money for
that. Anything with quality is bringing a premium price,
no matter what level of the market you=re talking about.
That=s very good news for us.@
Top weanlings were once again prized commodities,
with an established group of astute pinhookers battling
with ever-growing bench of end-users.
AThe foal market was ultra-competitive,@ said Russell.
AThe pinhookers I talked to say they=ve never worked
harder, bid more and got less.@
Tom Thornbury, Keeneland=s associate director of
sales, weighed in. ALast year was exceptionally strong,
and initially, that may have scared off some pinhookers.
But the yearling market=s been so good, and the
subsequent 2-year-old market=s been so good, that
people have been encouraged to step in at a higher
level. [Gainesway=s] Brian Graves told me that he had
limits, and exceeded them several times. Several others
said they=d see us back in [Keeneland] January because
they didn=t get their orders filled. It goes back to
quality--really good horses are bringing good money. I
saw a lot of end-users here buying. Maybe they=re
trying to get a jump on the market and try to buy those
quality horses now.@
Keeneland now moves forward to its January
auction, set to run Monday, Jan.12 through Friday,
Jan. 16. The next bloodstock sale on the calendar is
Fasig-Tipton=s Midlantic Winter Mixed Sale, to be held
at Timonium on Dec. 8.

Win Willy On Top Once More...
Topping the final day of selling at November was one
of the last horses through the ring, the popular Grade II
winner Win Willy (Monarchos--City Far, by Carson
City), who sold to Guillermo Elizondo for $45,000.
Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned the 8-year-old
stallion prospect as Hip 4011.
Machmer Hall snatched up the top broodmare on the
day, the $28,000 Backroom Blues (Dixieland Band), an
18-year-old who is the dam of GSW Sindy With An S,
SW & GISP Indian Winter (Indian Charlie) and SP Five
Star Holding (Five Star Day). Taylor Made consigned
the mare, in foal to Morning Line, as Hip 3756.
A colt from the first crop of GISW Dialed In
(Mineshaft) brought $28,000 to lead all weanlings.
Preston Stables purchased the half to SP Casse (Broken
Vow) and SP Zyzilla (Flatter) from the draft of BlakeAlbina Thoroughbred Services, which sent him through
the ring as Hip 3854.

Union Rags Supported by Connections, Market...
The leading first-crop sire by weanling average in
2014 is Lane=s End=s Union Rags (Dixie Union--Tempo,
by Gone West), whose youngsters averaged $133,931
from 17 of the 20 on offer selling. That led runner-up
Bodemeister (Empire Maker), with an average of
$118,739 (23/25); and
To Honor and Serve
(Bernardini), with an
average of $101,875
(8/9).

Bred by Grade I Bloodstock, Halcyon Farm and W.S.
Farish, the colt was produced by Brush of Fortune
(Broad Brush) and is a half-sibling to MSW & GSP
Lecturing Lynn (Pulpit). He was one of 12 Union Rags
weanlings to make six figures.
It=s maybe worth noting that another Union Rags colt
at Fasig-Tipton November RNA=d for $290,000 from
Taylor Made=s draft.
By the now deceased Dixie Union, Union Rags won
the GI Champagne S. in 2011 and the GI Belmont S. a
year later. One of his biggest boosters continues to be
the woman that bred him, sold him, bought him back
again, and campaigned him to a Classic win with trainer
Michael Matz, Phyllis Wyeth. Wyeth was on hand at
November both selling and buying Union Rags
weanlings.
AShe=s had a plan to help this horse succeed,@ said
Royal Oak Farm=s Braxton Lynch, who with her
husband Damian advises Wyeth. AShe bought nice
mares to send to him, then presented some of his
weanlings at this sale for people to see and buy.@
Those weanlings included a colt bred by Wyeth=s
Chadds Ford Stable who attracted a bid of $220,000
from Ingordo Bloodstock. The colt, Hip 397, was
produced by the Grade II winner Sapphire N= Silk
(Pleasant Tap) and is a half to the Grade II winner
Shaniko (A.P. Indy). Royal Oak consigned.
Royal Oak also sold a Union Rags half-brother to SW
Backdoor Kenny (Half Ours), Hip 1070, for $175,000.
Royal Oaks and Chadds Ford co-bred the colt, and
Chadds Ford purchased him.
AMrs. Wyeth bought out us out on that horse,@ Lynch
explained.

Some astute eyes might have noticed the name
Union Rags Racing on the sales sheets twice, first for a
$100,000 Union Rags colt from Pope McLean=s
Crestwood Farm (Hip 139), then for a $170,000 Union
Rags half-sister to SW Charming Vixen (Bernstein) from
Noel Murphy=s Castle Park Farm (Hip 798).
AWe=ve put a small syndicate together with Mrs.
Wyeth and Lane=s End,@ said Lynch. AFor young
stallions, one of the most important things you can do
is to get their offspring in the
right hands. So we
approached Lane=s End, who
has [the racing partnership]
Woodford Racing, and we
based it on their model and
with their help.@
Lynch said that Wyeth
would retain the largest group
of shares, while others would
go to private investors. AThat
way she doesn't have to do it
all herself, and we were really

liking what we were seeing
on the ground, and we
thought we could have a lot of fun racing his foals. And
by doing this, we=re helping to support him in the sales
ring.@
Lynch and Lane=s End=s David Ingordo are selecting
prospects. AOur aim is to buy a few weanlings and few
yearlings,@ she said. AHopefully, we=ll get five
altogether--and then we plan to spread them out to five
different trainers.@
While strictly cosmetic, Lynch said it=s also allowed
Wyeth to get her hands on some of Union Rags=s
flashier babies. AIt=s funny. Mrs. Wyeth bred five colts
by him by herself, and none of them had the chrome he
did,@ she said. AAnd everyone else was talking about
how theirs had so much chrome, and she was like,
>C=mon! I wanted some with some chrome!= The one
she bought from us was the spitting image of Union
Rags: three white socks, big white blaze, a beautiful
blood-bay color. Hopefully, she can do it all over again
with that one.@
A tall, elegant, strong horse, Union Rags wasn=t
entirely typical of his own sire, who was a stout miler
type. Lynch said it=s a maternal family trait he=s passing
on those looks to his offspring.
AHis second dam is by Nijinsky II, and I really see a lot
of that in the family,@ she said. AHe=s got that imposing
size, and I think that=s where he gets it. You wouldn=t
typically get that from Dixie Union or [damsire] Gone
West. We have a sister of his on the farm, and she=s
big, and I think [cousin] Declaration of War is pretty
good sized. And his foals are big, and are generating a
lot of chatter. I=ve talked to a lot of people who say
they have some great ones that they=ll sell as yearlings.
We think he could be the real deal.@
Leading Consignor? It=s Taylor Made. Again...
For the third straight year and for the 17th time in the
last 21 years, Taylor Made Sales Agency was
Keeneland November=s leading consignor. Taylor Made
sold 260 horses for $28,048,900--an average of
$107,880. Next on the list was Hill >n= Dale Sales, with
73 sold for $18,994,000, a $260,192 average; and
Lane=s End Farm, with 124 sold for $15,330,500, a
$123,633 average.
Taylor Made sold a trio of seven-figure horses,
including the $1.9-million Egg Drop (Alphabet Soup),
the $1.3-million Scarlet Strike (Smart Strike), and the
$1.1-million Renee=s Titan (Bernstein).
AIt=s very rewarding,@ said Taylor Made=s Duncan
Taylor. AIt=s great to be able to perform for your
customers. They entrust their product to us, and they
expect us to get out there and deliver on our promises.
We have a good, strong team. It=s not just the Taylors.
We have a lot of good people working for us who know
what they=re doing, have the experience, and know the
importance of every detail, of every update, of every
show. When your team is operating like it should, it
really does deliver better results for your customers.@
Taylor said the market was Astrong all the way
through, but if people do their homework and shop, you
can still find good buys.@
Interestingly, he thought some of those good buys
came in the market=s upper echelon. AAt the top end, I
think some people may have gotten some very good
mares for fair money,@ he said. AYou can never look at a
mare who brings $3 million and say she was bought for
cheap, but I do think there were so many good horses
at the top that it kept some horses from going through
the $4, $5 or $6-million mark. There were so many
options to buy, and people could land on different

Taylor also took an interesting take on November=s
increased RNA rate. This year it was 21.8%; last year it
was 14.5%. A high RNA rate is often viewed as a
negative, but Taylor thought it=s possible that this
November=s higher rate didn=t indicate a dearth of
buyers, but increased confidence among sellers.
AI think maybe some of the sellers are gaining more
confidence in the market, and they=re not as scared to
hold a horse for another year,@ he said. AThey might
think, >Hey, if I get a decent foal out of this mare, I can
do all right next year, and still be able to sell the mare
for about the same money.@

the proper level of drugs, from a scandal that rocked
the sport to its very foundations to a story about labs
that test medications for racing jurisdictions,@ said Irwin
during Friday=s luncheon at the Thoroughbred Club of
America. AThe writers are doing their jobs. I am proud
to sponsor an endeavor that honors such outstanding
and courageous journalists.
Irwin continued, AIn his winning story, Lucas
Marquardt pointed out that if horsemen and owners
really care about the lives of racehorses, then they may
have been misguided in their efforts. Those preferring
dirt tracks may have won the battle, but they just as
easily might lose the war to win the hearts and minds
of a public sick and tired of watching horses die on the
track from catastrophic breakdowns, which statistically
occur less frequently on all-weather surfaces and more
frequently on dirt.@
Marquardt commented, AIt's a huge honor. Ray
Paulick does great work, as does Bill Finley and Frank
Angst and the rest of the nominees. Were they more
deserving of the award? Probably. But I don't know
that anyone could be more appreciative than I am of
getting it. The award itself is a tribute to Stan
Bergstein's ideals, and to Barry Irwin's dedication to the
sport of racing as it should be. Barry absolutely lives his
convictions, and this award is an example of that. A big
thanks to the folks at the TDN. The staff there is
second to none, a great group of people, and
Barry Weisbord and Sue Finley have always been
incredibly supportive through my career. There were
also a number of people who spent a lot of time on the
phone with me--Mick Peterson, Dr. Wayne McIlwraith
and many others--and my gratitude goes to them."
Equine attorney, owner, breeder and Kentucky Horse
Racing Commission member Ned Bonnie delivered the
luncheon=s keynote address.

and which I know are essential to effect positive

Wes Lanter has seen his fair share of talented
horseflesh over the years. Over the course of three
decades, Lanter had contact with the likes of Seattle
Slew and Affirmed, Rahy, Dynaformer and Storm Cat in
various roles with Spendthrift Farm, Three Chimneys
and Overbrook Farm.
During a second tour of duty with the Horse Park that
began back in 2009, Lanter has managed the Hall of
Champions and its residents, including John Henry and
Forego, but from his comments made to those
assembled Friday afternoon, it=s clear Cigar held a
special place for him.
AIn horse racing, we=re always looking for the next
great thing. Sometimes we tend to put that label on
horses that haven=t earned it,@ he told the crowd,
adding unequivocally, ACigar earned it and he proved it
every time a bridle was put on him.@
He continued, ACigar defined greatness for a
generation. He was and will always be >America=s
Horse= and how appropriate that he would be guided by
a pilot in red, white and blue. His second [failed stallion]
career was over almost before it even started, but that
disappointment was somewhat tempered over time by
what became his new calling--as an ambassador to the
fans of racing and a beacon to those who hadn=t yet
discovered the pageantry and drama a good day at the
races can present. So many times, my colleagues and I
heard a whisper-->Look, over there, that=s Cigar. I saw
him at Belmont once.= He had that presence and power.
So that second incarnation became a third. The
ambassador patiently waiting for a shutter to click,
regal and handsome and keenly aware of who he was.
Running down to his corner, to rear up to almost
vertical and maybe have a roll right there, next to
where he rests right now. Every great horse I=ve ever
known has been aware of who they are. That presence,
that knowledge of self, led him to be great. He had it.
He was gentle with kids, he was just a real presence
and you knew you were in the presence of greatness
when you were with him. It is our honor and privilege
to have walked in your light. Mostly though, we thank
Cigar...for showing us class and greatness embodied in
a magnificent Thoroughbred,@ he concluded before
cuing up a video tribute to Cigar featuring each of the
stretch runs of his 16 consecutive victories.
Lori Grass made the trip down to Lexington from
Milwaukee to pay tribute to Cigar.
AHe led me back to racing,@ she explained. AI had
grown up as a kid at Arlington Park and during his
stretch, he renewed my interest in racing. I got to see
him at Arlington when he won his 16th in a row. I can=t
believe the people he drew in there that day--never to
be forgotten. He=s always had a special place in my
heart and I=ll never forget him.@
AHe was just such an outstanding animal,@ stated
Elaine Duett of Lexington. AThey all have something and
he just had so much presence, even here when you
saw him just running around his paddock. They attach
greatness to horses, even when they=re not. He was
great and he knew he was great. He was America=s

always had that presence. I
thought he=d live forever. I
used to love to come and see
him, just to watch him. And
when he died, I was like,

If you=ll all indulge me for a
minute, my trip down to
Lexington was as much to
say thank you to Cigar as
much as it was to say
goodbye. Without Cigar, I
would not be where I am
today, and that=s really no
exaggeration. He made me
the fan of the sport that I
am, he was my first true,
albeit somewhat belated,
equine hero at the age of 28.
The second Saturday of July, 1996--the day of the
Citation Challenge--was an experience unlike any other
I=m likely to live through again. The atmosphere was
electric and Cigar didn=t disappoint under far-from-ideal
circumstances. I was forced to miss the Pacific Classic
(good thing), but that did little to dampen my
enthusiasm. I=m happy to say I saw in person his last
career victory in the 1996 Woodward and his gutwrenching third in that year=s Classic at Woodbine. On
his way to Ashford that November, he was given a
sendoff at Churchill and I made the drive down from
suburban Chicago on a day as cold or colder than it
was yesterday in Lexington. Somewhere in my personal
archives, I have a 3x5 photo snapped on a Disc camera
of Cigar hamming it up, just taking it all in while in the
paddock, with an enormously proud Bill Mott on the
shank. I need to try to find that.
That was an amazing day.
That was an amazing career.
And, by all accounts, what an amazing life.
Standing over his grave yesterday at the Horse Park,
it really is hard to believe he=s gone. But thanks, Cigar,
for all the memories.

bought a half interest in Palace Malice from Dogwood
in September. Upon his retirement from racing, Three
Chimneys will acquire full ownership. Palace Malice will
race in the name of Three Chimneys Farm/Dogwood
Stable in 2015. Three Chimneys Chairman Goncalo
Torrealba commented, AThree Chimneys bought into
Palace Malice based on his race record, his looks, and

Multiple graded winner and last year=s GI Breeders=
Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Testa Rossi (Fr) (Dr Fong)
will make her return to the races today in Churchill=s GII
Mrs. Revere S. off a seven-month hiatus. The chestnut
made just two starts so far in her sophomore season
with a win in Tampa Bay=s GIII Florida Oaks in March
and a fourth-place effort in the GI Ashland S. trying the
Keeneland Polytrack in April. The Chad Brown trainee
has two wins from two starts at the 1 1/16-mile
distance and the Brown barn does well brining horses
back off layoffs. AShe suffered a minor injury after the
Ashland,@ Brown explained. ABut she came back from it
in good order and has been training well since. We=ve
had the Mrs. Revere circled since about August. We
just looked at it as a good spot to bring her back.
Beyond the Mrs. Revere I have no plans for her yet.@
Lady Lara (Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}), a stakes winner at
Newbury two back for Timothy Jarvis, rallied to win
Belmont=s Pebbles S. in her North American debut Oct.
13 under the care of trainer Bill Mott. She=ll get Lasix
for the first time here. Distorted Beauty (Invasor {Arg}),
Walk Close (Tapit) and Sandiva (Ire)
(Footstepsinthesand {GB}), who rounded out the
Pebbles superfecta underneath Lady Lara, are in this
spot. Five horses exiting the GIII Pin Oak Valley View S.
at Keeneland Oct. 17 are also entered in this overflow
field, including the top two finishers in Sparkling

The former was fifth on debut in the Churchill Downs
mud, but has since tallied three straight wins; while
Spring Included took a Kentucky Downs allowance in
September before her runner-up effort. AI was very
impressed with her performance in the Valley View,@
Sparkling Review=s trainer Ben Colebrook said. AI was
surprised with her too, not so much that she won, but
surprised in the ease in which she did it against a field
that tough. She came out of that last race great. I think
she=s still an improving filly; she=s lightly raced and I
think she=ll run another big one on Saturday. It=s
definitely a tough spot and we=re going to improve still
from her performance last time, but I think she has a lot

The speedy Heart to Heart (English Channel) will look
for his third-consecutive victory today in the
GIII Commonwealth Turf S. at Churchill Downs. Winner
of Saratoga=s Better Talk Now S. Aug. 20, Heart to
Heart then annexed the GIII Jefferson Cup in wire-towire fashion Sept. 27, besting a number of rivals he=ll
face again today. AHe=s very tiny but he gives
everything he has--a cool, little horse,@ said jockey
Julien Leparoux. AObviously, he has speed and he=s
going to break sharp and put me in the race. He=s been
working pretty good in the morning, so we=ll see. Last
time he won pretty easy. Hopefully he can run the
same kind of race on Saturday.@ The Brian Lynch
trainee is given the 8-5 nod on the morning line.
Jefferson Cup runner-up Captain Dixie
(Henrythenavigator) will also line up in the starting gate.
The Randal Family homebred came back from that
second place effort to take a Keeneland allowance
Oct. 25. Since transferring to the Michael Matz stable,
Bashart (War Front) has finished fourth in the
GIII Saranac S. at the Spa Sept. 1 and was a near-miss
second in the 1 1/8-mile GIII Kent S. at Delaware
Sept. 20. Last year=s GII With Anticipation S. winner
has two wins in three starts at the distance and this
slight cutback could help the Rosedown Racing
homebred. The Wayne Catalano-trained Highball
(Lemon Drop Kid) will give graded company another try
after a third in the GIII American Derby at Arlington
Park July 12 and a non-factor fifth in the
GI Secretariat S. Aug. 16. Most recently, he dropped
back to allowance company for a win at Kentucky
Downs Sept. 10. AWe had an opportunity to run him in
a two-other-than, but it was a little closer to this stake
than I would have liked,@ Catalano said. ASeeing as it
will probably be the last 3-year-old stake of the year for
us, we decided to wait it out and go with a fresh horse.
There=s some speed in the race, which I think works in
our favor. He=ll be a little closer to the front at a

RICKY LEPPALA PASSEs AWAY AT 62
Highly respected pinhooker and trainer, Ricky
Leppala, 62, died earlier this month at his home in
Ocala after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by
his two sons, Hunter and Dalton
Leppala; his brothers Danny and
Jimmy Leppala; nieces Alisa, Emily
and Mia Leppala and faithful dog,
Gauge. Richard Norman Leppala Jr.
was born Aug. 6, 1952 in Wayne,
Michigan. He started riding Quarter
Horse races at age 15. He rode for
prominent quarter horse trainers
and owners Buddy Nesmith, Don
Ming, J.L. Gladwell, Cleveland

others. Leppala transitioned into
training Thoroughbreds, catapulting into the limelight
rapidly becoming known as a developer of young
horses with a very keen eye for talent. Among the best

Township. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday,
Nov. 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ocala Breeders= Sales

The Maryland Jockey Club announced the selection of
Canada as the host nation for the 2015 International
Pavilion at the GI Preakness Stakes on May 16, 2015.

Fair Grounds Featured in Historical Documentary:
For 162 years, Fair Grounds Race Course in New
Orleans has been a storied staple of the city=s culture,
providing entertainment through horse racing,
exhibitions, boxing, baseball games and music festivals
for generations. On Nov. 19, WYES-TV, a New Orleansbased PBS member station, will premiere ANew Orleans
Fair Grounds Memories,@ a documentary about the Fair
Grounds, including rare footage and photos from the
track and interviews with former owners, trainers,
jockeys and journalists.
AFair Grounds is woven into the cultural fiber of New
Orleans. Almost everyone I come across has a fond
memory of Fair Grounds,@ said Tim Bryant, Fair Grounds
Track President. AThis documentary captures the heart
of Fair Grounds--the people--New Orleans characters
who have helped this institution endure for over 150
years.@
One Astar@ in the documentary is Risen Star, the
Louisiana Thoroughbred that won the Louisiana Derby,

documentary also explores the racetrack=s challenges

The horses of Al Shaqab=s Super 20 initiative
headlined by dual Group 1 winner Olympic Glory (Ire)
(Choisir {Aus})--have raised ,500,000 towards the
Injured Jockey=s Fund=s formation of a second
rehabilitation center for injured jockeys, Jack Berry
House, which is slated to open in early 2015. All of the
prize money won by the Super 20 of Al Shaqab Racing
in Great Britain and Ireland as well as the earnings from
The Wow Signal (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus})=s win
in the G2 Coventry S. were donated totaling
,491,895.08 with His Excellency Sheikh Joaan Al
Thani donating the additional funds to equal ,500,000.
AAfter Watching the Channel 4 feature on Jack Berry
House His Excellency was determined to raise as much
money as possible through this initiative to help such a
fantastic cause,@ commented Harry Herbert, Racing
Advisor to Al Shaqab. AAll of the Al Shqab team are

for the incredible sum of ,500,000 which couldn=t be

The Jack Berry House will be a rehabilitation center

A Month Remains to Register 2013 Horses for Plus 10:
There is only a month left to register horses born in
2013 for the Plus 10 breeding incentives. The yearling
registration fee is due Dec. 15 and a horse is only
eligible if their foal registration fee has already been
paid. The Plus 10 program is a ,5.5 million bonus
scheme for fully qualified 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds
that race for ,10,000 bonuses available in 550 races in
Great Britain and Ireland once the scheme is completely
active. The fee for yearling Registrations is ,200 by
Dec. 15 and the owner registration of ,350 is due Mar.
31 of 2015. AIf an owner pays the final two registration
fees, they will win an additional ,8,500 on top of prize
money and there is no limit on the number of bonuses
which can be won,@ said Plus 10 Communications
Manager Sheena Coffey. AFurther, the trainer, jockey
and stable staff will receive ,500 between them every
time a horse wins a Plus 10 race.@ The ,10,000 bonus
is split between the registered owner at the time of the
horse=s win (75%), the payer of the foal registration fee
(10%), the payer of the yearling registration fee (10%)
and the trainer, jockey and staff associated with the

“We used Equilume Light Masks on our barren mares last season at Jackson Purchase Farm. I am
happy to say that the masks worked great. All of the mares had breedable follicles and had gone
through transition by February 14th. In the winter of 2014 we had zero issues with the mares being
outside 24/7, often in sub-zero temperatures. Besides the fact that the mares all cycled as I hoped, I
spent less on van and vet charges and had healthier mares. Like extended turnout for any class of
