third loop and pull the third loop through to the
front. Continue in this way up the column. You will

then make stitches from the last row in this top
loop to secure it.
Last row: Ch3 (counts as a dc), 2dc in tr, dc in
next 6 dc, dc3tog in next three stitches, loop the
column to the top and make 2 dc in top loop,

The blanket can be made in a solid color or can be
made with any number of color changes. The best
way to make a color change is to finish all but the
very last pull through of the two loops of the last
triple crochet of a row. Cut yarn with a few inches
of tail and join with new color next to stitch. Pull
new color through last two loops. Weave in ends.

Intermediate Afghan Patterns
Manly Sports Lapghan
By Crochet With Cris
The sports fan in your life will love this crochet free
pattern. Have a beer, enjoy the game and curl up
with this Manly Sports Lapghan. Match the colors
of this afghan to the colors of his favorite sports
team!
Finished Size: Approximately 31" wide and 52"
long 9 (gauge is not important and you are
encourage to modify the pattern to be exactly the
dimensions you need. This is a multiple of 1
pattern so you can add and subtract width as
needed to fit your needs.)
The difference of a bp-hdc to a regular hdc is that
the hdc is done using the top two loops of the
stitch below it. The bp-hdc is done by inserting
your hook around the back side of the work,
around the post of the stitch below, and pulling
your yarn through (as illustrated you can see
where the needle should be).
The bp-hdc creates a raised "ridge" down the work
by pushing the top loops of the stitch forward. All
the bp-hdc ridges are on the same side of the
lapghan to give an interesting stripe within a stripe
texture.
NOTE:
A "stripe" is defined as a block of the same color.
A single stripe consists of multiple rows of a single
color.
INSTRUCTIONS:
STARTING STRIPE (Use Color A)

needed for your lapghan)

MATERIALS:
 Crochet hook, J
 3 skeins Red Heart Super Saver Royal
(Color A)
 2 skeins Red Heart Super Saver Pumpkin
(Color B)
NOTE:
The sports fan in your life doesn't have to be an
Illini fan to make this lapghan. If he or she likes a
different team, just find those two colors and
replace Color A with the darker of the 2 colors and
make Color B the lighter of the two. Simple as
that.

REPEAT the REGULAR STRIPE row pattern until
you reach the length you desire. Using 2 skeins of
each color, approximately ____ "regular stripes"
(not counting starting stripe) should be able to be
completed before doing your finishing stripe. Your
regular stripe pattern repetitions will stop with
Color B so you can finish the last stripe in the
darker color.
FINISHING STRIPE (Use Color A)
stripe 21
Repeat Rows 1-6 of the regular stripe pattern but
do not tie off at the end of row 6
You can stop the edging after one row or continue
on with more rows of sc either alternating colors
OR in the darker of the two colors.
WAYS TO MODIFY THIS PATTERN:
1. You can increase the hdc rows between the bphdc rows in the stripes to make the overall stripe
width wider. If you choose to increase the
thickness of the stripes, you have to increase it by
2 more hdc rows at a time. The number of hdc
rows between the bp-hdc rows must be an odd
number.
2. By making a longer starting chain, you will have
a wider lapghan
3. Making a wider and longer lapghan turns it into
a very warm afghan for any bed.
4. Add fringe
5. Make your chain length the actual length of the
lapghan instead of the width and you will have
vertical stripes instead of horizontal (in relation to
your lap)
Remember - if you modify the width of the stripes
of the lapghan itself, you will need more than the 2
skeins of each color.
Row 7
ch 2 and turn work
hdc down the row
If you do not want to put an edging on your
lapghan, you can snip the yarn and tie it off now.
Weave in all your ends and your lapghan is done. I

Amore Tiles
By Marilyn Coleman for Coats & Clark
If Europe holds a special place in his heart, then
maybe he will appreciate this Amore Tiles blanket.
It is reminiscent of architecture seen in Italy and
Greece, but it will be right at home at your house
too. The free easy afghan crochet pattern is
written for beginners, so what are you waiting for?
Remind him of those special memories from your
European vacation with this easy crochet afghan
pattern.
Finished Size: Approximately 43" x 60"
On the final round decide where you need to join
to another motif. Work the stitch you’ll want to join.
Drop the loop from the hook. Pull it up through the
top of the stitch you want to join it to on the other
motif. Work the next stitch on your current motif.
Repeat. You will get a very tidy attractive seam
that is as flexible as the rest of your work. You can
vary this if you like by pulling the loop down
through the top of the stitch you want to join to.
This produces the reverse effect and is very nice
in its own right. (Aha! If you just thought that this
must mean both sides of your work will look good
using this method you are right).
INSTRUCTIONS:
Pattern
Start with a ring made by wrapping the tail of the
yarn clockwise around your finger or thumb three
times. You will start the first of your chain by
drawing the working end up through the ring to
form the first loop. At the end of your first round
you can tighten the ring to the perfect size.
Round 1: With Color A ch 3, 4 dc in ring, remove
hook from loop, insert hook in 3rd st of ch 3 and
draw loop through, ch1 tightly, ch 4, *5 dc in ring,
remove hook from loop, insert hook in first dc and
draw loop through, ch 1 tightly, (bobble made), ch
4, repeat from *, join – 3 bobbles and 3 ch 4
spaces.
Round 2: *In next ch space work 1 sc, 1 hdc, 3 dc,
1hc, 1 sc (petal), ss in top of bobble, repeat from *
2 times more, join. Fasten off.
MATERIALS:
 TLC® “Amoré™” yarn, 3 colors:
 Crochet hook, 1.5mm [US H-8]
 1 Tapestry needle
GAUGE:

4 rounds – RED
1 round – BLACK
5 rounds – RED
1 round – BLACK
6 rounds – RED
3 rounds – BLUE
1 round – BLACK
6 rounds – BLUE
The only thing that should not change is that there
is one round of black because it is the “web” and
would not look right if made wider.
The afghan can be made to any size with
additional yarn.
NOTE:
Continue working in rounds in colors and pattern
established, always working 1 round with small
shell, and 2 rounds with large shell. Continue
repeating rounds 7, 8, 9. Work those three rounds
over and over, regardless of the color used for the
rounds. That is what keeps the afghan flat as it
increases in size. Also, make the afghan as large
as you want. The size is not ‘set in stone.’
WEBBING:
To make “ribs” of the web, work from outer edge to
middle of afghan.
Attach BLACK yarn in the ch-2 sp at the top of any
point. (Ch 3, sl st in ch-2 sp of next round) for all
BLUE and RED rounds. (Ch 2, sl st in ch-2 sp) for
all BLACK rounds. Finish off.
Repeat 11 times. Weave in ends.
BORDER:
Attach blue yarn in any stitch. *Ch 1, rev sc in ea
st around, with (2 rev sc) in ea ch-2 sp. Finish off.
Weave in ends.
NOTE:
From Round 7 onward, you will work 1 round with
small shell, then 2 rounds with large shell.
Regardless of color, follow that sequence. Red
and blue rounds are always dc, black rounds are
always sc.
NOTE:
The round count for the colors used were only the
number of rounds that were in each color of the
afghan pictured above. Each one I have made has
a different number of rounds in red and blue, black
rounds are always only one round because it
represents the web itself.
