Reading Together Programme: Mrs Foster has run two of four workshops with a group of very enthusiasBc parents who are parBcipaBng in the Reading Together programme. Last week the parents enjoyed reading with their children as they pracBced the ideas shared to help make reading at home an enjoyable Bme for parents and children. Waitara RSA and ANZAC CommemoraCon Book: The Waitara RSA recently made a generous donaBon to our school, some of which we are going to use to pay for a photo book of our Anzac commemoraBon, photographs taken by Mr Bruce Lobban. The remainder will be spent on library books. The photo book will be a permanent reminder of this day and will be available to read in the library. We are grateful to the RSA for their generosity. The Senior School have really loved their “Mad About Science” Inquiry this term. They have been learning to think and act like scienBsts by observing, thinking and wondering. The kids love the hands on experiments and have been coming up with some great observaBons and wondering. Miss Cresswell, Mrs McKey and Miss Hakkens can’t wait to see what they come up with for the Science Fair!
Year 7/8 Outdoor Academy: Pouakai Hut Overnight Tramp: This term we will be exploring into the 29 October 2014 Kia ora, Bula, Ahlan, Guten Tag, Ni Hāo, Anyoung Haseyo, Lan-‐nang, The weather may have been grey and miserable to start the week, however there was a bright spot when we welcomed Zharn and Nate Kidney and their family to Bell Block. We hope you enjoy learning with us boys. Wednesday was an exciBng day for Ms Manukonga when her daughter, Lily, was born. Our best wishes go to Kim, Jason and Lily. Well done to you all. Two weeks ago I met Corey Peters a highly successful sportsman and silver medalist in the Paralympics Winter Games. He came armed with a giant photo of himself in his sit ski, personally signed and all for me! WOW! To top if off he also signed a massive Paralympics poster I had. The most powerful message I took away from our talk was to set yourself a goal and make liIle goals to achieve the big goal. Corey has done this himself aier crushing his spinal cord in a motocross accident in September 2009 which lei him paralysed. Through sheer determinaBon, pushing himself well beyond his comfort zone, doing hours and hours of pracBce, never having a summer in the last four years and having ligle Bme to spend with friends and family he achieved his ultimate goal. I want to do the same and like Corey I
believe I can do it! Keep an eye out for me because one day I will be a professional wheelchair basketball player! By Jake Ryan beauBful Pouakai Ranges for an overnight stay looking over New Plymouth and the coastline. It’ll be chilly, so we’ll need lots of hot chocolate and marshmallows to keep warm! ApplicaBon forms have been handed out, so get yours filled in and returned to the office by Thursday June 4th. Student Leadership Council: 2nd Half Year ApplicaCons: The informaBon for these have been handed out to Year 8 students. ApplicaBons are due to the school office by Friday June 5th, so please ensure the deadline is met. Yummy Apple SCckers: Thanks to everyone who is collecBng Yummy sBckers from fruit bought at 4 Square, Pak’n’Save and New World. We receive free sports equipment for our sBckers at the end of the year, so please start filling up a sBcker sheet if you haven’t already. The sheets are at the office or online at www.yummyfruit.co.nz
I wonder why the hot
water made the food
colouring mix faster.
DebaCng: The first round of our debates was an exciBng one as both teams segled down to prepare each argument and possible rebugals as well as pracBse in front of other classes. Year 7 drove around to Manaia School for their debate on Tuesday 19 May. Manaia School provided a solid argument but we were stronger in our delivery and rebugals. We clearly won the debate. Well done, KaBe, Jade and Julia who won best speakers (1st -‐ Julia, 2nd KaBe and 3rd Jade). The Year 8 debate was held at school against Mangorei School (last year’s Champion Yr 7 team) in front of an enthusiasBc audience of Yr 5-‐8 students. All arguments were very strong and very convincing but Mangorei won the debate by one point. Ben was best speaker and Josh was 3rd best speaker. Well done Kaya, Ben and Josh!

Using MathemaCcal Language with your child: We all use mathemaBcs in the everyday things we do. When we involve our children in solving number problems and making everyday decisions with us, we are building their capability in maths. The types of quesBons below will encourage your child to think mathemaBcally. “Do we have enough plates and utensils for all the guests coming to the birthday party?” “We are doubling this recipe. How much of all the ingredients will we need”. “We are ferBlising the lawn. This ferBliser bag covers three square metres. How many bags do you think we will need?” “This store is selling the game you want for 20% off of $27.00. That store is selling the same game for $19.99. What do you think? Where should we shop?” “Taranaki Toy Library is holding a KIDS BOOK SALE on August 1st from 9 to 5 pm at the Hall of Knox Church in Fitzroy. We are currently collecBng any good quality 2nd hand children’s books up to age of 13. If you have some unwanted books that you are willing to donate, could you please drop these off to the school office.
