By definition, we don’t anticipate surprises. Their occurrence reminds us that we cannot always guess or shape the future. Granted, we do what we can do; we attend to the daily tasks, as we must. For grace is surely here in the mundane, and God is in the details. But God is in the happy surprises, too. Today’s readings are filled with startling developments. We hear the clarion cry of one of those rare prophets announcing the coming of the Lord. Isaiah proclaims startling, surprising images of the nearly impossible reconciliation of opposites: calf and lion, leopard and young goat, child and serpent. Isaiah’s vision sees all of these creatures living in harmony. This is Eden again; this is paradise. It is God’s surprise and promise. The other half consists in loving Jesus and winning souls for Him.” -St. Mary Hermina Grivot On New Year’s Eve, join your fellow parishioners in the Church for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament as we welcome in the new year. Exposition will begin at 9 pm with Solemn Benediction at midnight. Immediately following we will pray the Rosary for peace in our nation, community, family, and ourselves during 2014. It is not necessary to stay the entire time. Second Sunday of Advent From the Principal’s Desk Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends, Welcome to the beautiful season of Advent and the beginning of the Church's liturgical year. The word Advent means "coming." During Advent we recall the history of God's people and reflect on how the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament were fulfilled. This is the time, just like during Lent, that we prepare for Jesus' coming. It is my hope and prayer that this will be a time of reflective preparation for us all. As we began Advent last week, we lit one candle in the midst of all the darkness in our lives and in the world. It symbolizes our longing, our desire, and our hope. We want to be renewed in a sense that Jesus came to save us from our sin and death. We want to experience His coming to us now, in our everyday lives, to help us live with meaning and purpose. Furthermore, we want to prepare for His coming to meet us at the end of our lives on this earth. Our annual school Christmas program is on Thursday, December 19th at 6:00 pm in the church. You will want to mark your calendars for this beautiful celebration. Protecting our Children What is ‘relational bullying’? Relational bullying is unwarranted, persistent, unwelcome behavior in the form of criticism, isolation, or fabricated allegations that can damage relationships. Examples include social exclusion (“You can’t be with us”), spreading rumors (“Did you hear…?), and withholding friendship (“I won’t be your friend if you…”). Though relational bullying can often seem ambiguous to outside observers and often garners less attention than physical bullying or verbal bullying, it should not be discounted simply as normal, adolescent behavior. In fact, several recent studies suggest relational bullying is more strongly related to emotional distress and teen depression than any other form of bullying. Make sure your child’s school does not tolerate such behavior among its students. Do you know someone in an unplanned pregnancy? Have them call the local Network Medical Center at 805967-9096.
