Feature
The students in our Essential Skills Department have been busy bees this school year. Students
are out and about recycling each day, as well as filling the copy machines for our teachers.
These are on campus jobs that are done each week. Also, some of our students travel to job
sites outside of the building for six week intervals. Some of the job sites our students work at
are Goodwill, Lee’s Inn and Middle David’s Candle Shop in Franklin.
During the month of January, our students worked on a unit on hygiene. The class had
professionals come in to demonstrate how to help keep bodies healthy. Mrs. Walker came to
class and showed students how to keep their skin clean. Mrs. Higdon also was able to visit the
classroom to discuss what healthy hair looks like and even cut and styled one of our student’s
hair. Students had a great month learning about teeth health, exercise and healthy foods as
well.
During the month of February, students will be studying The History of the United States in
that they will be studying such things as anger, compromise and good choices in the students’
curriculum based instruction called Unique.
When entering the high school you may smell the remnants of our students cooking up one of
their own awesome recipes that students select each week to cook. It is never a dull moment
of learning in the Essential Skills Department!

Congratulations to the 51 students who participated in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Instrumental Solo
and Ensemble District Contest at Bloomington High School North.
All State Honor Band - Congratulations to T.J. Vculek, Angelique LaNasa and Allison Greenwell. These students were selected
through a live audition process to perform with the 2015 Indiana Bandmasters Association All-State Honor Band this March at
Purdue University.
All-State Percussion Ensemble - Bethany Catlin and Ethan Heikens were selected through a live audition process to perform with
the 2015 Indiana Music Educators Association All-State Percussion Ensemble. This was the second year that both students were
selected for this honor ensemble.
Congratulations to Alexis Hash and Malori Senac C-9 Students of the Month, along with Jon Allen and Hanna Martin, FCHS
February S.A.G.E. Winners.
On Tuesday evening, February 8th, and Wednesday morning, February 9th, FCHS put on the annual Course Fair. On Tuesday evening, 8th
grade students and their parents had an opportunity to learn more about the high school by listening to a presentation on such things as
graduation requirements and diploma types. After the presentation, students and parents visited various tables/displays that were set up by
the high school teachers in order to learn about all the different types of classes offered. On Wednesday morning, 9th and 10th grade
students had the same opportunity to learn more about courses that they may be interested in taking by visiting the various tables/displays
and talking to teachers.

The Franklin Community High School FFA Chapter is one of our busiest clubs at the high school. The Franklin Chapter hosts approximately
100 members and is endowed with strong support of an alumni board that operates like a booster club. Franklin FFA regularly completes
community service projects such as the Franklin FFA Tractor Wash (first ever!), Spaghetti Dinners, Teacher Appreciation lunches, building
picnic tables in Agriculture Mechanics class that were donated to the FFA Leadership Center, Million Meal Marathon with the Indianapolis
Colts to help feed the hungry and the Molly Gibson Breakfast. The Molly Gibson Breakfast, which takes place during National FFA Week,
(February 23-27th, with the breakfast being served on Thursday, February 26th 6:30 a.m.), is a special event that chapter members look
forward to hosting every year. This year’s breakfast is expected to draw approximately 250 guests. The annual breakfast, which offers
hearty breakfast casseroles, fruit and drinks to the community, serves to support Pooh Bears for Molly, a program which provides stuffed
toys, games and books to infants and children who visit the hospital. Pooh Bears for Molly began as a memorial campaign to honor
former Franklin FFA member Molly Gibson, who died in a car accident in 1998. There is no fee for the breakfast, but people are
encouraged to bring a Pooh Bear or a monetary donation. Also, the FFA members, with the help of local businesses, have been able to
participate in the National Soils Contest in Oklahoma the past two years.
Heather Dougherty and Ashley Langreck, FCHS’s Agriculture teachers and co-FFA advisors enjoy the active involvement of parents as well
as the interest and participation of a tightly knit community. Also, the Franklin Chapter was highlighted in a recent Farm Indiana
publication!
FAFSA INFORMATION!
All Johnson County students and families are invited to attend the FAFSA Day at Central Nine Career Center Tuesday, February 10th, 2015
8:10 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Experts from the National Center for College Costs will be on hand to help you complete the FAFSA (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid), answer all of you rquestions and immediately interpret your results. This FAFSA service is free to all
Johnson County students and families thanks to funding from the Johnson County Community Foundation. If you have any questions, you
may contact the National Center for College costs toll free at (877) 687-7291.
CUB ACADEMY
Franklin Community Schools Preschool Cub Academy is registering (until capacity) on Monday, April 13th, 2015 4:30 –6:30 p.m. at
Northwood Elementary. Open registration (during school hours) 2/2/15-5/22/15. Full day preschool 8:30-3:30—weekly fee $155
(Preschool 8:30-3:30, Daycare 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. Monday—Friday. Half day preschool 8:30-11:30 a.m.—weekly fee $75
(Preschool 8:30 –11:30 Monday-Friday. Items needed for registration: $50 nonrefundable fee due at registration (cash or check), birth

PROM COMMITTEE SOCK HOP!
Franklin Community High School’s Prom Committee will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner and Sock Hop Dance on Friday, February 13, from 6:009:00 p.m. in the FCHS Field House. All ages are welcome and there will be family fun activities such as corn hole and other games. Please come
and support the FCHS Prom! Prices: Kids (10 & under) - $4 Dance, $2 Dinner, $5 Combo; Adults—$4 Dance, $4 Dinner, $7 Combo. Family of 4:
$20 all combos. $3 for every extra child.
YEARBOOK SALES BEGIN!
The 2014-2015 Kite yearbook is now on sale. The cost is $50 per copy. Your money pays for a book in full color that is delivered in August. If
you order by Friday, February 27th, you will receive a free insert for friends’ signatures that will arrive in May. There are two ways to order: 1.
At school, put a check or money order payable to FCHS Kite in an envelope and leave it in the main office. Please make sure the student’s name
is on the envelope. All envelopes should be addressed to Mr. DeRosa. 2. Online: Go to www.yearbookordercenter.com and enter the order
number 8839. The final deadline to order by check or money order is Friday, March 6th. The final day to order online is Friday, March 27th.

CAMP INVENTION—WHERE BIG IDEAS BECOME THE NEXT BIG THING!
Camp Invention celebrates its 25th season in 2015 — that’s right, we’ve been spreading an innovative spirit to 1st - 6th graders for a quarter of
a century! We inspire girls and boys to think BIG and imagine how they can change the world for the better one day! This one-of-a-kind
weeklong experience connects science, technology, engineering and math through fun hands-on activities. The program allows students to
learn about creative problem solving (and so much more!) in teams grouped by age. Local educators will be leading the week of hands on fun at
Creekside Elementary June 15th-19th, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. New for 2015—The Illuminate Program! In the brand new Illuminate
program, boys and girls spend time collaborating with teammates to construct a freestyle racing cart, pushing the limits during high-energy

PROJECT PROM
Going to the prom but don’t have formal wear? Project Prom has you covered! Stop by the White River Branch Library on Saturday, March
14th between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to browse the selection of Prom dresses, tuxes, shoes and accessories. If you find something you like,
you will be able to take it home for free! Also, two discounted tuxedo rentals from Sophia’s Bridal, Prom and Tux and a custom made prom
