There are many reasons that
teenagers begin to sext. One of the reasons
is a growing curiosity in the subject of
sex. When teenagers are curious about
sex they usually want to discover how
others look nude or partially nude.
Another reason for sexting is peer
pressure. Many times teenagers fell
pressured to do what their friends and
fellows peers are doing.
Teenagers may also participate in
sexting because they feel that they are in
love. Many times when teenagers feel
they are in love it is an all or nothing sort
of situation.
Although sexting is a growing
epidemic today’s youth can overcome
the pressures of the world and decide to
not sext.
Looking Back on the 2013-2014 School Year
By: Megan Maguire
Although it’s very hard to believe,
another school year has just about come and
gone. It seems like only yesterday the seniors
were proudly walking into the school with
a flower in their hand and a crown on their
head and the freshmen were walking around
nervously looking for their classrooms, May is
already upon us.
In just a couple weeks the seniors will
be walking across the graduation stage and
everyone else will be starting their summer
vacations. While the thought of these events
have many students very excited, some are
taking this time to reflect on the ending of
another year.
Senior Angelique Govantes has a very
bittersweet feeling about finally graduating
from Reef, “I’m very excited to start a new
chapter of my life at Florida State, but I’m
definitely going to miss Coral Reef and all the
friends and memories I have made here.”
It seems that this is a very popular

Baitline strives to provide quality student-led publications
to the student body providing the school community with an open
forum of public expression. In the publications class, students
will make all editorial decisions including, but not limited to:
generating story ideas, writing copy, editing copy, laying out
copy, taking photographs, and handling all aspects of running
the business end of a school publication. Because of this, any
comments or concerns should be addressed to the editorial staff.
It should be understood that the newspaper is not a
professional publication; therefore, students will make mistakes
during the learning process. As a staff, we will make every
effort to learn from these mistakes and continually improve the
publication.
While our primary goal is to inform and entertain the school

SAT Facelift changes the scoring and essay portion
By: Malcom Harrell
As the school year comes to an end there
are several stresses that we will be able to forget
as we enter into the summer. However, one thing
remains true and that is that the SAT will find its
way back into the lives of high school students,
but underclassmen shouldn’t fret because come
spring of 2016 the SAT will be receiving a major
facelift that is sure to please students.
The president and CEO of College Board
David Coleman claims that the SAT of today is
incredibly stressful for students, its full of too
many mysteries and tricks, and it doesn’t really
connect to the curriculum that is covered in
today’s traditional high school classes nor does it
create college ready students. Two of the major
changes that will be occurring in 2016 are that
the scoring scale will go back to 1600 highest
possible score from 2400 highest possible score
and there will no longer be penalties wrong
answers.
Brianna Jones said, “It’s not fair that
underclassmen are getting a better advantage on
the SAT but it evens out because they still have a
load of other exams.”
Since 2012 when Coleman joined
College Board he has been saying that he
wanted to improve the SAT because for years it
was too abstract and he wanted to create more
opportunities for students through the test instead
of hindering them. College Board claims to have
eight key changes but the only ones that really
matters are the changes to the reading/ writing
and math sections as well as the optional essay.
The reading and writing sections will
include questions that require students to cite
evidence for their answer choices, and will have
a broader variety of genres. Also the vocabulary
will not be as difficult as it has been for a while.
Instead, students will have to decipher words
that are commonly used in a job setting.
Although the math section will no longer
include calculators on every portion it will be
solely based on will focus on data analysis,
real world problem-solving, algebra, and some
advanced math concepts which will help students
prepare for college classes and career goals.
The essay portion which was added
in 2015 will now be optional. The essays
will not be scored with the test as a whole but
will be scored separately. Also the prompts will
pretty much remain the same as far as context
and difficulty. The essay will include a passage
and will ask the writer to analyze it and create a
solid argument while using concrete evidence.
In conclusion, David Coleman wants to
revise the SAT because he wants to redirect it
back to its original purpose which is to develop
college readiness in students while creating
greater opportunities for tem as well.

The wireless era finally arrives at The Reef
By: Melissa Rodriguez
After what seemed like eternity, Coral
Reef finally adopted the gift of the gods, Wi-Fi.
It was only a matter of time before our school
finally joined the school Wi-Fi
bandwagon.
Even though there are stickers
posted on the windows of numerous
locations around the school, some
students still haven't noticed these
new blue stickers. Some students
even question this new technological
advancement.
Stefanie Rodriguez, a legal
senior, asked, "We're allowed to
use that?" when I asked her how
she felt about the Wi-Fi. For all you
Stefanie's out there, I'm here to save
a lot of your phone data (yes, you
can use the Wi-Fi for your phone).
In order to join this WiFi, you must have a Miami Dade
County School’s portal. Since all the
students in our school and our school district
have access to one, they can simply join the WiFi by entering the password BeOurGuest!!
Shortly after you enter the passcode, you
will be taken to a login screen where you will
input your portal information.
Your student ID will be your username
and your password is whatever it is for your
MDCPS portal. Once you've completed this
process, you are set since you are now connected
to the network.
Beware, the school Wi-Fi is bittersweet.
Yes, you have access to internet, but it doesn't
have as much leniency as you may think. Just
like the school computers, Dadeschools blocks a
ton of "inappropriate" and social media websites.
According to the the school board,
“Student and adult (unless bona fide research)
filtering is a requirement of all public schools.
The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA)
requires all network access to be filtered,
regardless of the device you use to access it
while in a public school. The network you are
using while at school belongs to M-DCPS and
will be filtered.”
If you connect your phone to the system,
you will not be able to access any of your social
media feeds. Also, a student, that will remain
anonymous for obvious reasons, claimed that
they "... went online to look up the answers to
an assignment and after a couple of minutes of
having the answers in my hand, my safari page
suddenly closed, leaving me answerless and
stranded on my homepage."
Does this mean that the school techs
monitor our every search or is this just a
coincidence? I guess we will never find
out.
Unless, of course, you ask yourself. Until
that day that some brave soul asks, I would
highly suggest being careful of what you
search because if people are monitoring all
our web searches, then they know exactly
who you are.
This is due to the fact that you logged
into the Wi-Fi using you student portal (be
mindful that your student portal carries all
your information). With that said, hopefully
you take my advice and search safely!
The School Board also mentions that
“As part of Miami Dade Public School
Education incentive for better educational
resources for students, the Miami-Dade
Public School District is providing Free Wi-Fi
access to students. This Wi-Fi Access is intended only for
registered students to access only classroom
materials specified by each teacher including
Teachers’ classroom pages, web links and
homework and project research. It is not intended for On-Line Gaming,
Netflix, or any other non-educational website. High Bandwidth Video streaming and big
downloads will be monitored and subject to
regulation.”

How to Lose a Prom Date in 10 Hours
Image By Russell Omo [email protected]
By: Erica Riera
With prom right around the corner, I think
everyone has seen their fair share of creative
promposals and is up to their ears in guilt for
spending so much money on the “perfect prom
outfit.”
Prom can be a stressful time. Those
four little letters have been causing an annual
epidemic in which teenagers fall hopelessly
in “like” with someone in a matter of weeks.
The last thing we need to be worrying about is
whether or not we might lose our dance partner.
For those who want to do everything possible to
keep their date, the following is an hour-by-hour
guide on what NOT to do (unless you’d rather
like to shake your guy or girl off your tail before
the big night).
8:00 am – Somehow you knew that
onion and cream cheese bagel would not be a
good idea. No one likes bad breath and breakfast
is typically the most dangerous time for gross
smells to linger. You can’t be too sure but it seems
like your date was keeping his/her distance.
9:00 am – Your date is interested in
running for court! Being Prom King or Queen
takes guts and if this is something your date
really wants to do, the last thing he/she needs
to hear is how you think it’s stupid or lame or
how you have low political efficacy and are not
obligated to vote due to succumbing to societal
norms. Way to crush someone’s confidence.
10:00 am – In a perfect – or not-so-perfect
– world, you and your date have schedules that
give you as much time to be together as possible.
Just you two and a class full of your closest
friends. After four years of high school, bonds
are strong and making fun of his/her friends for
whatever reason hurts them more than it hurts
you.
11:00 am – It’s almost time for lunch.
Everyone’s grumbling stomach makes emotions
run high in this crazy teenaged bubble we’re
shoved in for seven hours each weekday. You let
the excitement get to you and realize too late that
your date feels ignored. He/she walks off alone.
12:00 pm – While have a pre-prom lunch
date may have seemed like a good idea at the
time, you chewed up your sandwich way too
quickly, spilled your carton of milk all over him/
her, and didn’t offer to share your last few chips.
Your date doesn’t think you will improve much
before dinner on prom night.
1:00 pm – Playing sports during lunch
can be fun. Smelling bad afterwards, not so
much. Be sure to use deodorant or perfume,
anything to keep that smell away. If you prefer to
watch from the sidelines, then by all means, feel
free to cheer for your date while on the court.
However, using pet names like “Snuggle Bear”
elsewhere.
2:00 pm – You and your date decide to
rendezvous in the parking lot before heading
home. Using a baby voice may have seemed
funny that one time but no it wasn’t, no it wasn’t.
Was it Woogy Boogy? I’ll miss you oodles and
oodles. Yes I will, yes I will, my little Sugar
Pumpkin.
3:00 pm – Your parents just agreed to
let you go to a house party after prom but your
date already planned a nice night for you and
your friends. You call to say that he/she needs
to cancel the reservations because you want to
PARTY!
4:00 pm – Oops, turns out you’d rather
get a new phone than pitch in for the limousine
rental. Your last text to your date said to kindly
make up the difference.
5:00 pm – Final deal breaker: After
arguing about the terrible day you two had
together, you mention all the other options you
had for people to go with to prom. Your date is
obviously disappointed that you just settled on
taking him/her and all prom plans with each
other are promptly called off.
At the end of the day, prom is just one

2014 Prom: Frozen in Time

to be the best overall in all of Miami-Dade

This year’s theme was “Frozen in

they automatically thought of the Disney

But to their surprise it was like a

they were greeted with a 2014 ice sculpture
where you would poor in blue punch and
it would come out cold. In the entrance

the decoration was very elegant.
Over 900 people attended the

Is Taking a Gap Year Before College the Best Decision?
for you or not. First a student must decide if they
are taking the year off for the right reasons. Is it
because they need a temporary academic break
or because they want to go out and party all the
time.
Students must also consider whether they
will apply to their higher learning institution
before or after they take their gap year. If
students decide to apply before they must take
into consideration that the major and college
the student choses may not match the schooling
environment they will want in a year.
When students decide they are ready to
endure the gap year from college it is best to
have plans to occupy one’s mind and time.
By: Jakeyla Augustin
Many students have to make the hard decision of where they will attend college; however, some students have to decide whether
they will take a gap year before attending college. A gap year is a break from academics
between high school and higher education.
Taking a year off of college is very popular in
Europe, and as time progresses it is becoming
more popular in the United States. As the price
of college expense expands, so does the number
of students who take the gap year.
There are several factors when it comes
to deciding whether a gap year is the right thing
During the gap year students can decide to get a
job, do volunteer work, pursue a hobby or even
travel if they have sufficient funds to do so.
It is important to remember that if there
are no gap year plans that entice you it may be
best to postpone the gap year until a later time.
According to college confidential, some
individuals believe that taking a gap year from
college can make a student become more mature
and eager to learn. Taking a gap year from college may not
be for everyone, but if you believe it is the right
plan for you just make sure that it is a decision
you can live with. Dress Code

40 Long Days of Testing - AP, IB, EOC....
By: Anaija Lapaix
With testing consuming the entirety of
Coral Reef Senior High School, stress levels are
at an all-time high. From End-Of-Course exams
to Advanced Placement Testing to International
Baccalaureate tests to FCAT testing, it is a
surprise that students aren’t dropping from
exhaustion.
Anthony Sostre, a senior in the legal
academy has said that he is taking two AP
tests. AP test define whether or not you grasped
the concepts that your teachers spent all year
trying to drill into your brain. Sostre has said that
while he is ready for it, he has spent minimal
time studying for them. Luckily his teachers
“kind of” prepared him for it.
Testing does not have to be this daunting
task that students dread for weeks on end, but
rather something that they feel adequately
prepared for.
There are even children who feel that no
studying is required to ace their exams, because
either their teachers taught them with such
passion, or they feel that the subject is easily
passable.
Another senior in the Agriscience
academy, Isabel Afonso, is preparing for AP
United States Government, AP Macroeconomics,
and AP English Literature. She is ready for one
of them, but the other two she still feels shaky
about. Even though her teachers have adequately
taught her the material “[she’s] just lazy.”
Aside from AP testing, IB also has a
rigorous course load that requires a certain
amount of points in order to graduate with an
IB diploma. Each test is on a scale from one to
seven with seven being the highest. International
Baccalaureate juniors seem to have the “best of
both worlds” as they are taking both AP and IB
tests.
Alex Kiener, an 11th grade IB student is
taking AP English Literature, AP United States
History, IB Anthropology, and IB SL Chemistry.
While that might seem a bunch of gibberish to
the rest of the school Kiener said, “yeah, to a
certain extent [he will pass all of his test].” His
teachers have prepared him “very well” and the
rest is up to him.
Some students who take multiple test
are extremely confident about one of the test
they are taking and more apprehensive about the
other one, as exemplified by Jennifer Cabrera.
She is taking AP Human Geography and AP
Psychology as a sophomore in Agriscience .
She says that she will pass Psychology “for sure
[and] human [AP Human Geography] is iffy”.
Needless to say, no matter what kind
of test you are taking, there is no doubt that
preparation is key as well as confidence. Testing
consumes Coral Reef starting at the beginning
of April and basically continues until mid-May
without fail. There is no need to feel anxious
or doubtful and you are not alone. In fact, if
you’re not taking an AP, EOC, IB, or some type
of test this season, you might be the one who

Advanced Placement
Courses
By: Madeline Reyes
As the 2013-2014 school year comes to a close; the
final Advanced Placement exams are done with.
After enduring the class or having friends stress
about the course all year long, it is finally time for the groans
and cries to die down. From IB students to VPA, an array of
AP classes are offered and taken. Not only does the number of the AP classes differ
from student to student but also based on ones academy.
However, the decision on which of these classes to take next
year remains questionable for some.
Here is an overview of the amount of AP Classes
many ‘Cudas are enrolled in, after interviewing fifty-five
students.

Some teens get discouraged after being
shut down from just one job opportunity but
here are some tips that will give teenagers the
push they need in continuing their job hunt.
1. Start looking early
Shawn Boyer, chief executive officer of
SnagAJob.com, suggested that employers are
already thinking about their upcoming summer
staffing issues, even though summer has not
arrived yet.
One way to beat out at least some of
the competition is to start your job search early
rather than waiting for the school year to end.
“Consider telling them, ‘I can work 10 hours
a week now, and then I can ramp up my hours 5. Show some ethusiasm
after school gets out, ” Boyer said.
Employers who bring teenagers on board 2. Get the word out about your job

Being prompt makes a good impression on the

if you are hired for the job.
8. Play up your strengths
Many teens show a tendency to be hard
on themselves and minimize their
accomplishments. Remember that a
job interview is not the place to beat
yourself up. Instead, emphasize
flattering details about yourself,
such as being an honor-roll student,
juggling extracurricular activities
and volunteering in the community.
It is wise to list out in particular
the leadership positions that you’ve
held to show responisbility.
9. Know where to look
As bleak as the job market is right
now, job experts say these places
are still open to hiring teens: fastfood restaurants; movie theaters,
merchandising companies that stock shelves for
retailers, and clothing stores.
10. Consider working at a bank
If you’re at least 18, you also may be
able to land a job as a bank teller. Banks often
need help over the summer months when many
of their employees go on vacation. Also a bank
job can look good on your resume.
In Retrospect, finding a summer job
is not the easiest task on earth. However,
with the implication of these tips along with perserverance it is destined that there will be
