Moonlight Intruders

We awoke to hear a rustling in the brush.
The mesquite trembled in the moonlight.
Coyote, I thought,
No, this was bigger, two legs or four?
Out of the palo verdes shadow, emerged,
Three burros, treading lightly on the sand.
Cautiously, they approached
Drinking carefully from the cool spring.
We lay motionless in the darkness,
Listening to the silence of the night.
Slowly, you ease your hand
To touch the rifle that lay by your side.
Soft shadows in the moonlight,
As they gently nibbled the tender plants
That grew where the water fanned out
Into a grassy marsh.
From the west a soft breeze stirred.
I could smell the sage on its hot breath.
The campfire coals pulsed brighter
For a moment, then quickly died.
Breathless, we looked at one another, and smiled,
As silently, you put your rifle down.
And laying back, we gazed up into the heavens.
While undisturbed, the burros drank.
