From the Potentate
Adrian Skytland, Potentate
So what does it make you think
when you first hear advertising for
the “Great Minnesota GetTogether?” Every food item “on a
stick,” pronto pups, Sweet Martha’s
cookies, and all you can drink milk.
The advertising also means sharing
great times with friends and family.
But it also means that it’s the end of
summer—when kids going back to
school and for many of our clubs
and units, the end of parade season.
Mary and I hope everyone had a fun
and safe parade season.
We also would like to thank all of
the units, nobles and ladies who attended with us to the Midwest Session in
Marquette, Michigan. It was the first
time the Ahmed Shriners are host to
the Midwest Summer Session and they
did well.There were two parades,some
competitions, Shrinearama, and just a
bit of barn storming. This is the World’s
Most Modest Drum Corps entertaining the crowd outside of the Dog
House (opposed to being “in the dog
house”).We could not have asked for
any better weather, accommodations
and hospitality. Thanks to the
Potentate’s Aides for their hard work.It
is always so much fun to share times
with all of the Shrine Temples of the
Midwest. It’s our turn to host next in
2017 so be prepared to have a fun time
in Bloomington, Minnesota.
We have also welcomed five new
nobles to Zuhrah Shriners as the
Wilmar, Litchfield and Crow River
Shrine Clubs hosted the Spicer
Ceremonial and the Steak and Corn
feed on the 13th of August. Thank
you to all who worked so hard for
cooking and organizing. Thank you
to the two Ceremonial Masters,
their ladies for greeting the new
nobles and the Ceremonial Unit for
a fine welcome to our new members.Thank you also to the first and
second line signers for bringing their
candidates. Next ceremonial will be
the Big Tent in November so get
your candidates ready. It will be at
the new Masonic Heritage Center
on the Masonic Home Campus in
Bloomington. If you haven’t been
there you need to go and see the
fabulous facility.
We had the last “Party on the
Patio” event on Thursday, August
18th, with a big thanks to Brad
“Buster” Bolz of the Cobra Corps,
coming with his Smashed Food
Truck providing the food.
Our Temple very existence greatly depends on a strong, ongoing membership program. It should be the #1 priority of EVERY
member to assist with membership development. It must be
stressed to all members that it is important to identify and
recruit new members into the Masonic fraternity.
Remember that our tasks regarding membership development
are not inclusive of only membership in the Shrine. We are all
Masons. One of our main duties as Masons is to support our Blue
Lodges, raising new Masons as well.Once these new members are
Master Masons, encourage them to attend temple events and
Hospital service projects – they will see the good works that
Shriners do and want to be a part of it.A good “product” sells itself.
57 MONTHS IN A ROW....THANK YOU!
October Events at Zuhrah
Oh yea, currently there’s not
patio but I want you all to know that
the delay has been with some difficulty getting the customization of
the patio bricks being ordered. The
laser engraving requires black and
white line drawings so some graphic
artists are working to correct the
artwork. Please respond as quickly
as you can if you’re contacted with
an issue in generating the brick you
requested.We still want this project
completed as soon as we can.
Pirates, pirates and more pirates
along with the Pirate’s Bounty will be
up for the taking at the Pirate’s Bounty
Party on October 15th, 2016.The big
fall party will be a buffet dinner, fun
gaming and the Pirate’s Bounty benefiting the Coins for Camps and Dollars
Too. So I hope you’re ready for some
great fall fun.
You can still purchase your Men’s
bolos and Ladies kid’s pins. Contact
Loran Goff for the bolos or Lady
Mary Skytland for the pins.Thank you
to everyone for past donations and if
you are looking to donate some of
your parade funds, Coins for Camps
or the building fund can also use your
donations. Everyone knows how
Zuhrah stands behind our kids.

Zuhrah Ladies Connect
The Divan Ladies are developing a Ladies Mentoring program in tandem with the Zuhrah Strong Membership
Committee. One feature of the program is direct communication to the Ladies about events happening at Zuhrah for
the Noble's Lady and family, Zuhrah Ladies Connect.Another aspect is personal contact with the new Noble Lady during the time the noble is going through the Ceremonial. In the near future The Zuhrah Ladies Guidebook will serve as
an information resource tool, and will be available at www.zuhrah.org, LadiesInfo (tab in the upper right corner).

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – UNITS
Greetings from the Zuhrah Antique
Cars Unit!
We have had an amazing Summer
here in the ZAC.
We started out the month of August
with two parades. The first one was in
Watkins for Kraut-N-Wurst Days
where several of our cars and members
were seen in a news story on KARE-11
TV. We finished the weekend with an
appearance in Le Sueur at the Giant
Celebration. Both parades often have
several Zuhrah Shrine units participating, along with great crowds and we
were honored to be a part of that. It
was also fantastic to see many of our
longtime members parading with us
this season including Cy Webster and
Don Udell, along with some guests who
were happy to ride along.Thank you so
much for helping out your hospital,
your unit and your Zuhrah temple.
Don’t forget that even though the
weather is nice and it’s still a few months
away, but we are starting to plan for the
Potentate’s Ball Hospitality Room. We
welcome any and all help. Watch your
email for updates about meeting times
and needs.
Our monthly Burger Runs are fun and
very popular. These are on the 4th
Wednesday of every month starting at 6
p.m. at preselected restaurants.You don’t
need to be a member to join in the fun
and spouses are always welcome! We are
always looking for great ideas of places to
go so if you have a place you think we
would enjoy please let us know. We
would love to hear from you!. In
September please join us as we return to
Woody’s Grill in Eden Prairie, a favorite
among our members.
If you would like to check us out
our business meetings are held the
2nd Wednesday of the month starting
at 7 p.m. We currently meet at the
Park Tavern in St. Louis Park and many
members arrive early around 6 p.m.
for food, beverages and conversation.
Please contact Thomas Walker at
952-933-3008
or
email
to
[email protected] if you’re interested in joining our unit or would like
more information. You do not need to
own a classic car to join our unit--just
have an interest in classic cars. You can
also
send
inquiries
to:
[email protected] and
one of our officers will respond. If you
would like the Zuhrah Antique Cars
Unit to appear at your parade or function drop our Captain a line at
[email protected]. And be sure
to like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ZuhrahAntiqueCarsUnit
where we have lots of photos and
videos of the cool stuff we do.
Remember: we drive so that kids
can walk!
Fraternally,
Thomas Walker
2016 Vice President
Zuhrah Antique Cars
Thanks to Director General Steve
Northquest and the Ceremonial Unit
members who made the trip to Spicer
to put on a Ceremonial last month. Five
new Nobles traversed the hot sands of
the desert (or cornfields of Minnesota).
Dir. Gen. Steve reports that plans are
underway for the fall Ceremonial,
scheduled for Saturday, November 12,
at the new Masonic Heritage Center. It
sounds like it will be a joint Ceremonial
with Osman again. Such team efforts
help to build brotherhood across the
river. Stay tuned for further details.
After a summer off, the Ceremonial
Unit will resume our monthly Stated
Meeting schedule this month with the
next meeting being Tuesday, September
20, at the Zuhrah Center on Blue Circle
Drive. Social hour starts at 5:30, followed
by dinner catered by Hy-Vee and the
meeting. Plan to attend and see whether
Pres. Mike Rouillard has recovered from
the Great Minnesota Get-together yet.
No reports from the Black Camel
or the Sunshine Committee, so as we
enter the home stretch of the political
campaign season, I’ll sign off for the
month with a fact about political candidates: They’re telling the truth when
they say their opponent is lying.
Fraternally,
John Hultquist
Arabian Scribe
The Chairmen have a lot going on
this summer. We will be ending the
summer with a BANG! We had the
Inaugural Chairmen Train trip. On
August 27th, we added private train
cars to the back of the North Shore
Scenic Railroad for a trip from Duluth
to Two Harbors and back. It was a
great time open to all.We had a great
ride, great food and great company. We
rode in our private train cars up the
shore of Lake Superior. It was fine trip.
We are having our annual fundraiser
on September 10th at the Zuhrah
Temple from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Last year we
did “Celebrate with the Potentate”.This
year we are having “All Or Nothing At

Potentate...and Sinatra.$15 a person gets
you appetizers of seafood from Joe’s
Crab Shack, steak by a phenomenal chef
and a live Frank Sinatra singer. We have

We hope to see you there!!
Hello, fellow Funsters and to all our
Brothers in the Mystic Zuhrah Shrine and
Masonry. I would like to congratulate
each and everyone of our unit members
for the dedication and hard work this
summer in completing our parade schedule.Well done, brothers! A special thank
you goes out to Greg Iverson for helping
this summer by driving the van and tractor. We completed ten parades this year
and it met the goal we set. Thanks to all.
Now as we look towards the future we
have a potential circus and planning for the
Pote’s Ball!...We need all our members to
attend the up coming meetings starting in
September to help make decisions on
what we should do. Our Christmas party
is set for December 4th unless we get
over-ridden by the Circus and have to
move it. We also have some financial
choices to make and plan for. Watch for
future announcements on all of these.
Our van and trailer are safely put away
down in Le Sueur and in the very capable
hands of Wayne Swenson (Buttons). I
would like to also send a big thank you to
him for all the work he did on out
Calliope and trailer this year...Wayne,your
continued hard work and dedication to so
many different units and causes is simply
fantastic and sets a standard for Masonry
and the Shrine we can all try to follow!
Larry Rode is organizing a run walk on
Sept.25th and is looking for voluteers to
help with this fundraiser... let us step up
and help our brother in this event for
Zuhrah!... I will be there to help and I
hope many of you as well.
There are so many different events
happening this month and next I suggest
you read the Arabian for this and support
the other units events as they support
ours..(i.e.Easter Egg Hunt)...I hope to see
some of you at these events. If you have
any questions call me... be happy to hear
from all of you..
We all have gone through challenges
this year and in our lives, we get
knocked down but we get up go forward and we lick our wounds and
heal.... I would like to remind you of
why we do what we do... there are children who can’t get back up by themselves, cannot heal without doctors and
cannot go forward alone.... We are
Shriners and our goal is to help the diseased children, to see that that they
have as much of a chance at a normal
life as we have! So thank you for all you
have done this year and thank you for
your dedication to this clown unit and
for your continued support to make a
difference...We Are Zuhrah!...We Make
A Differnce!.................... and as always in
the immortal words of Red Skelton...
“Good Night and God Bless”....................

SEPTEMBER 2016
ZUHRAH SHRINERS – UNITS
Okay, okay, okay. We’re aware that
we missed getting in our Pipe Band
article for the last issue. Your Pipe
Band Scribes were busy with the
Imperial Session in Tampa and the
Potentate’s trip to the “Field of
Dreams” in Iowa and before we knew
it, we missed the Arabian article deadline. So when you see us next, go
ahead and feel free to chastise us.
Meanwhile, the rest of the band has
been busy since we last posted an article in this communique. There was the
Eagan parade, the Apple Valley parade,
the Watkins parade, and the Rush City
parade. We played at the opening of the
Heritage Center at the Masonic Home.
Also, a number of us played the pipes
for some of our departed Nobles and
Brethren at their Masonic services.
And if that wasn’t enough, the Pipe
Band also coordinated this year’s
Zuhrah Ice Cream Social (which, I might
add, appears to have been a rousing success). Special thanks go out to the
Horsemen, the Guardians, the Rod &
Gun, the Funsters, the Antique Cars, as
well as to many of our own Pipe Band
members who made the event a success. Particular thanks goes out to Mac
and Colleen who stepped up to the
plate when our Drum Major Emeritus
Jerry Oliver went into serious surgery
the week before the event (Jerry, we all
wish you a speedy recovery. Peg, we all
wish you continued endurance having
Jerry home all day). If we have left anybody out that should be thanked for the
Social, we apologize for the oversight.
We’re still looking for representative
items for our Shadow Box at Zuhrah.
Right now, the case is pretty empty and
we need to add some eye-catching items
in there to draw attention to the Pipe
Band. The facility is beginning to rent out
their meeting/banquet space to outside

And as always, Nobles looking to
learn how to play the pipes or drums
(or just join the Band for the comradery) are welcome to join us each
Monday at our practice. We are still
gathering at the Minneapolis Scottish
Rite (6 p.m. for chanter/drum practice;
7 p.m. for full band practice). We all
seem to have a pretty good time and
we sincerely invite you to join us.

Hello, Nobles,
September is already here; it is getting
to be hunting season here in Minnesota.
Seems like summer just started and
here we are talking about fall hunting
and the end of summer. Hopefully the
nice summer weather will last into fall
and we can enjoy more days on the
patio of ZSC. Or at least enjoy the nice
grass growing there. The State Fair is
upon us already too.And for all the kids
out there the dreaded words are on the
TV already—“Back to School Sale.” Of
course from a parents point of view it is
a resounding YES finally!
The re-written bylaws have been
emailed out to the Divan and the Unit &
Club Heads already. As of this writing I
am not sure if we will be able to
hold/held our Unit & Club Heads meeting August 23rd or not. We were going
to approve the final draft at that meeting. But rest assured the final draft is
done and awaiting approval.There were
not many changes made to the bylaws at
the July 26th meeting. A word here and
there. The language was cleaned up to
make it clear the elections for Unit &
Club Heads takes place in October. This
was to help facilitate getting the new
officers into the Zuhrah pocket calendar.
The Unit & Club Heads will recommend
changes to help Units and Clubs solve
their problems, it will not implement
solutions to the problems.
There may be time to get in on the
Patio Paver Project. Contact the ZSC
office to see if your Unit or Club can still
order an engraved paver. You might also
want to get one with your name on it to
place next to your Unit or Clubs paver.
Stay Safe out there—

Hello, Nobles,
Fall is upon us like mosquitoes at sunset. But unlike mosquitos, a lot of us like
fall and the changing seasons here in
Minnesota. The Guns and Hoses Club is
going to be working with past Potentate
Al Niederhaus in distributing burn
awareness pamphlets to local fire
departments. The Shrine Hospital is
developing a new campaign this fall to
promote safety issues related to fires
and burns. Guns and Hoses will work to
distribute this material to local fire
departments and police departments
with the hope they can pass on the
material to members of the public and
with schools in their areas. Watch for
this great campaign to kick off.
On a different note I attended a fun
event today. It was the annual Retired
Troopers Day in St. Cloud. Every year
the Minnesota State Patrol Troopers
Association and Minnesota State Patrol
Supervisors Association get together to
host a retirement party for all the
Troopers who retired over the past year.
The current retirees receive a nice
wooden plaque with their badge, patch,
dates of service and their rank insignia.
All past retirees are invited to attend as
well. The oldest retiree in attendance
was from the rookie school class of
1946! Needless to say a lot of stories are
told and some seem to grow every year.
I believe we have in Zuhrah and the
brotherhood of Masonry what the State
Patrol has with retired partners, a common bond shared over many years and
through many hours of working together.
This I believe is what part of the Zuhrah
Shrine meeting are all about, getting
together and reliving good memories
with good friends and Brothers. I would
like to take this opportunity to make a
special shout out to retired SP 107.Hello!
Look me up at the next stated meeting, I
will buy you your favorite beverage.

Greetings Nobles, Ladies and
Friends,
With thirteen parades completed and
two more to go, the Steel Drum Band
has rounded third and is heading home
for this parade season. In August we performed in four parades,Watkins,LeSueur,
Gaylord and Kimball.The Watkins parade
was unique as the town is still recovering
from the tornado that hit the town in
June. Just before the parade we heard the
parade’s coordinator’s home was
destroyed in the tornado; but, as she sat
in her basement and her roof was being
removed, all the parade information sat
undisturbed in a box on her dining room
table. We also enjoyed seeing Dee
Johnson, Mary Lind and Sarah and JoJo
Kipp at the LeSueur parade.
Our September parade schedule is
Dayton Heritage Days on September
17th and Plymouth on Parade on
September 24th.
The band continues to be greeted
enthusiastically and with many pleasant
shout outs from the crowd at the
parades. This year we performed in three
‘new’ parades. The Steel Drum Band was
also invited to perform in three other
parades;but,we had to decline these invitations as we did not have enough members available to perform. So, if you are
reading this and are not a member of a
parade unit we invite you to consider
joining the Steel Drum Band. Learning to
play a steel drum is easy and painless. If
you want to give it a try you can join us
for one or both of our September
parades. Just contact Mark Kipp.
The Sunshine Committee asks us to
remember Jim Burlingame Sr., Sharon
Beaver, Sandy and Arnie Segal and Bob
and Judy Johnson in our thoughts and
prayers.
September birthday wishes go out
to Lady Sarah Kipp (12) and Nobles
Steve Downs (18) and Tom Lind (22).
Anniversary congrats goes out to
Nobles and their ladies Judy & Dean
Yorston (2), Sunny and Kris Pich (11).
Congratulations one and all!
I know we are still at the State Fair;
but, you can mark your calendars now
for our Christmas Party on December
10th at the Knights of Columbus Hall
in Bloomington.
To continue the series on the questions the Band receives at parades:
Q: Is it hard to play the steel
drum(s)?
A: The short answer is NO.
Becoming a Panner, the technical name
for a steel drum is a steel pan, requires
very little physical skill. You mainly
need to learn how hard to hit the pan
and the location of each note on your
pan, or pans. From there you just need
to find a comfortable standing, or sitting position, and play away.
Q: I can’t read music; can I still play
a steel drum?
A: YES. The past directors of the
Steel Drum Band have created our
music books so you do not need to
know how to read music. If you can
read this:
G GA G C B
G GA G D C
G G G E C BA
FFECDC
—you can play Happy Birthday on a
Pan!
Finally, I will close with a quote from
our Worshipful Brother George
Washington: “Associate yourself with
men of good quality if you esteem your
own reputation for 'tis better to be alone
than in bad company.”

Goldy had his own little scooter and con-

through the parade. Maybe next time with
a skateboard and ski rope.
“America—Life’s Big Parade”
It’s summer and “Tis the Time to
PARADE!” I know roughly of 57 parades
throughout the state of Minnesota.
Some are big as is the Aquatennial in the
Twin Cities) and others are smaller like
in Watkins, Minnesota. One thing is similar in nature and that is they create
excitement in their communities. Since
1974, Zuhrah Band has probably participated in close to 500 parades. If you
think we’ve averaged 1,000 people at a
parade, we’ve been seen by about
500,000 people of all ages. Great advertising for our Shrine organization. Even
with that many watching, few have seen
a parade from our perspective.
July 4th 2016 – Zuhrah Band had two
parades – Forest Lake at 10:00 a.m. and
Apple Valley at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, July
3rd, Kathleen and I took our usual ride
around Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun, and
Lake of the Isles. It was a beautiful day
and people were out enjoying the holiday weekend. Sailboats were racing on
the lake, there were picnickers, walkers,
joggers, bicyclists and families all enjoying
this great weekend. As we talked and
“people watched,” we commented on
what a great place to live.
Reminiscing on all of the parades I had
been in over the years, I wondered how
many miles I had marched and the many
hours I had played that trombone, the
number of great marches I had played in
a band or drum and bugle corps. As a
musician you always wonder how long is
the parade and will my “chops” hold out?
Needless to say, the chops made it and I
had lasted through one more parade.
Thoughts about different Shrine
parades entered my mind. One in particular was the Midwest Shrine Parade in
Sioux City, Iowa. This parade had an
incredibly long and steep hill with not a
person on the curbs watching the parade.
I stepped out of the band formation with
one of our oldest, devoted and determined member, Matt Kripps, to walk a
block to catch the band coming down
from the steep hill.Matt was embarrassed
(but I was concerned for him because he
was 80+) and the temperature was close
to 90 but he made it through the parade.
Next in my mind was Z Band at the
Imperial in Denver when I outfitted the
band with Audio Pacs (6 lb. battery driven
speaker systems). I’ll never forget marching, playing between the skyscrapers and
looking down the street three blocks
ahead to see people come off the curbs
to see what sounded like a 300 piece
band. It was Z Band – 60 pieces blowing
up a storm with six basses across the
back row of the band with bell covers
that spelled out “Z U H R A H.” We were
the talk of the parade.
Back to our Sunday drive – coming
back into Edina I turned the corner by the
city hall and as far as I could see there
were rows of empty lawn chairs and blankets lined up along the streets waiting
occupants for the 4th of July parade
scheduled for 24 hours later. How excited
people had to be to make sure they got
their favorite spot for the parade (it
looked like the camp-out for a Black
Friday sale at the Malls). We both laughed
at how funny that looked and went home.
On Monday, July 4th, Randy, Gene and I
headed for the 10:00 a.m.parade at Forest
Lake. The hour-long drive turned into our
version of “As the World Turns,” and we
solved all the world’s problems! I had forgotten how big this parade was until we
started following a semi with cars on its
flatbed promoting their local business. Like
all parades there were bands,queens,floats
of all sorts, tractors, dancing schools, drill
teams, politicians, local service organizations all lead by a color guard and a flyover
by four precision aircraft billowing smoke
announcing the start of the parade and the
4th of July celebration was underway. In
between playing I looked at all of the
cheering people,the small kids,and various
families sitting on lawns waiting for the
approaching parade,picnic lunches,and the
rest of the activities of the day. The one
thing that was always present were the
smiles on everybody’s face and how happy
they seemed to be celebrating this great
holiday. Nothing brings out the sense of
patriotism like that of a 4th of July parade.
After Forest Lake we packed up and
drove to Apple Valley. Gordy did a good
job of arranging the two parades so we
had plenty of time in between to get to
Apple Valley without panic. A great place
to park and unload right next to our trailer. As our bandwagon pulled up to the
corner and waited a young lady ran up to
us with her 5-year-old daughter and a big
grin. Of course she ran into our most
handsome young man, Jim R. hollering, “I
have to thank you Shriners.” It turned out
that she has a son who had an operation
in our hospital and it was successful. Jim
did a nice job of talking with her and getting information. Thanks to Jim, a good
spokesman for our fraternity.
Jim R. (above)
Like the Forest Lake parade, the
Apple Valley parade was also packed 510 watchers deep at the curbs on both
sides of the streets.
After we finished the parade and I got
home, I thought about some prints that
Kathleen and I had picked up in Vermont
in a small town where Norman
Rockwell had lived and painted. As one
of my favorite painters, no one has captured America as he did.Thinking of him
and the parades around America, he
could have found the sense of America
today, July 4, 2016, as he found some
sixty years ago. We are a country of
some 325 million people who still have
that same sense of patriotism and the
same happy faces at a parade – America
is still “Life’s Big Parade.”
Another active month for Z Band
with parades, concert, outings, etc. The
German Band played for some most
appreciative seniors in Chanhassen.
Duane is great at conversing with them
and has good knowledge about the
music which they love. The Flames
played a concert at Como Lake in St.
Paul where they even danced in the
aisles. We had a really stiff breeze which
kept the mosquitoes and music sheets
flying. John Simacek got hit as our newly
draped Flames fronts flew up and covered him.All in all a good concert.
Remember compound interest.

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – UNITS
And after a fun time at the Ranch,
more fun was in store as the kids enjoyed
a boat cruise on Lake Minnetonka. Check
out Paradise Charter Cruises next time
you are interested in a scenic cruise on
Lake Minnetonka. They certainly know
how to make sure everyone has fun and
a safe time. And they love helping the kids
from the Shriners Hospital.
Greetings from the Horsemen!
With parades, Camp Achieve, MidWest
Shrine, Trail Rides, Cowboy Brunch,
Zuhrah Movie Night at the Ranch, riding
horses, and camping with horses at area
parks, there is a lot going on with the
Horsemen and we could not be happier!
Let’s get you caught up on recent
goings on and give you a glimpse of
things to come.
RECENT ACTIVITIES
Shriner’s Hospital “Camp Achieve”
at the Ranch REPEAT on 19 July!
This year, for the first time, the
Horsemen welcomed TWO groups of
children from the Shriners Hospital to
the Ranch for a day of fun. In June, we
had a group of 5-9 year old patients
visit us.And this 19 July we had a group
of 9-12 year old patients visit… 24
kids plus hospital staff! The older kids
remembered the fun they had in past
years and requested a “reunion” at the
Ranch.The adventure started with lots
of horse rides and a picnic lunch at the
Ranch, and ended with a boat cruise
on Lake Minnetonka. The Horsemen
were thrilled and we hope the hospital
will continue with the two groups per
year approach! Below are samples of
the fun and smiles!!
Just look at that happy face below!
Clearly this little girl is having a lot of
fun.And the compassionate eyes of the
horse looking back at the girl’s leg signals that he too knows the importance
of what Shriners do.
Below is the group of the 9-12 year
old visitors to the Ranch. There were
several horses standing in the paddock
just behind the group and just after this
photo was taken, the horses popped
their heads up and “photo-bombed”
the group… to the delight of the kids.
Parades!
The Horsemen have had a lot of fun
representing Zuhrah at a number of
area parades over the past month or
so. Some of the highlights have been…
• 16 July in Belle Plaine saw seven
Horsemen and their mounts participate
in the community’s annual parade.
• 23 July in Shoreview had twelve
Horsemen and horse participating in the
annual parade of the hometown of High
Priest & Prophet, as well as Horseman,
Brad Roberts. After the parade ended
and we were riding back to the horse
trailer, the heavens opened up and it
poured.Everything got soaked.When this
writer got home,he pulled off his cowboy
boot and poured water out of it!
For upcoming parades where the
Horsemen will be riding, please see
the listing in the “Looking to the
Future” section below.
Ice Cream Social
On 27 July, the Horsemen were
happy to participate in Zuhrah’s annual
ice cream social. Five horses were
there to give free rides to children of
all ages. The big semi-trailer horse
hauler also made a big impression. And
there were about a dozen Horsemen
present to enjoy the fun and to talk
with anyone interested in horses.
4-6 August: Midwest Shrine
Association
The Horsemen were a big presence at
the 4-6 August Midwest Shrine Association
meeting in Marquette, MIichigan. Lots of
horses, a lot of Horsemen, a number of
Horsemen Ladies, and a bunch of fun
socializing with other Shriners.
The troop traveled on Wednesday, 3
August, and got the horses settled in at
the Marquette fairgrounds. The local 4H club had everything ready and waiting
for us and then they camped there so as
to have people on-site around the clock
to make sure everything was OK.The 4H’ers took care of feeding and exercising the horses as well as cleaning up as
needed. We don’t think the Horsemen
have ever had such good care provided
when visiting another city.
On Thursday morning, 4 August, a
wonderful trail ride was enjoyed by a
number of people.
There were 19 people on the trail
ride: eleven Horsemen, four ladies,
three fellow Canadian Shriners, and a
guide. The ride through the forests was
fantastic and, of course, we kept an eye
out for any moose… not sure how the
horses would react to those!
After the trail ride and a picnic lunch,
the Horsemen (and horses) got cleaned
up and participated in the big parade the
afternoon/evening of 4 August.We had a
contingent of eleven Horsemen and
horses in the parade and we must have
made an impression. A photo of the
Horsemen in the parade was the centerpoint of the front page of the local
newspaper the following day!
Then on 5 August (Friday), the
Horsemen put on a great drill team performance. The 4-H’ers who had stayed
with the horses and taken care of them
really enjoyed seeing “their charges” in
action. When we finally had to depart
Marquette, the 4-H’ers told us that we
had left them with lots of stories to tell
their friends.
But, this adventure started and finished with horse hauling problems. For
this long trip, the Horsemen rented a
“reliable” tractor to pull our horse-hauling trailer. But the rented tractor developed problems and we were over three
hours late leaving the Ranch. The delay,
the long drive, and then getting horses
settled in for the night made for a long
day. Then on Saturday, after we loaded
the horses and equipment, and started to
leave the Marquette fairgrounds, tractor
problems happened again. Fortunately,
there was a repair place in Marquette
and they got the problems fixed. But, the
Horsemen missed participating in the
Saturday morning parade associated with
the MidWest meeting.While aggravating,
we are thankful no one (or horse) came
out the worse for wear and we all get
over life’s inconveniences.
19 August: Zuhrah Movie Night
at the Ranch
At the time of this writing, the 19
August “Zuhrah Movie Night at the
Ranch” had not yet occurred so the
writers have no details to share.
However, if past years are any indication, everyone had a great time with
free horse rides, free hayrides, free
movie (“The Jungle Book”), free popcorn, free hotdogs, and free soft drinks.
For those who desired their own beverages and snacks, personal coolers
were welcomed. Lots of people brought
their favorite chairs and blankets for a
great night under the stars watching a
wonderful family movie. Special thanks
to Horseman Ben Dye for insect control in the days prior to the event to
take care of those pesky critters.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Here are a few of the fun things
coming up in the months ahead and
we are sure more events and activities
will be added in coming weeks.
Upcoming Parades!
There are just two more parades
this year for the Horsemen. Come
out and see us!
3 Sept. 2:00 p.m. Dassel
11 Sept. 2:00 p.m. Wayzata
11 September Cowboy Brunch
On 11 September, the Horsemen
will have another Cowboy Brunch at
the Ranch. We are expecting fantastic
Fall weather and terrific food prepared
under direction of Chef Brother Max
Downs. Come and enjoy the food, the
Ranch, free horse rides, and getting to
act like a cowboy. Serving starts at
9:30 a.m. and goes until 12:30 p.m.
15 October: Boy Scouts
Learning about Horses
Local Boy Scouts will be at the Ranch
the afternoon of 15 October to learn
about horses, tour a horse ranch, and
experience riding horses.The afternoon
is part of the overall efforts of Scouting
to expose boys to a wide variety of life
experiences and education. The
Horsemen are happy to help with this.
Perhaps some of these boys, several
years in the future, will become Zuhrah
Shriners and Horsemen!
2017: Looking Way Ahead!
The
2017
MidWest
Shrine
Association will be held in the Twin
Cities… Bloomington to be specific. But,
for all of the horse-related events, the
Horsemen Ranch will be the place to be!
Visiting horse units from the region will
be housed at the Ranch and the drill
performances and competitions will be
at the Ranch. Horseman Larry Messerli
is leading the planning and organization
of the horse-related activities.
A TIP OF THE STETSON GOES
TO…
This month a
tip
of
the
Stetson goes to
all of the people
who support
the Horsemen
and enable us
to do what we
do.We are talking
about
Horsemen
Ladies, families, friends, Ranch boarders,
and more.We hesitate to list names for
fear of missing someone. But, you all
know who you are and the Horsemen
know we would not be successful at
what we do without your help.
At parades… you are the support
that gets glitter on horse hooves, walks
behind picking up horse poop, checks
that Horsemen have water and are OK,
hands out flags to mounted riders just
before parades and then collects them
so we can dismount safely, provide food
and snacks before and after parades, etc.
Without all of you, the Horsemen would
not be the organized, put together,
good-looking group we are.
And away from parades,it almost always
falls to you to organize, decorate, and
cleanup parties and functions held at the
Ranch.A big part of the fun we enjoy is due
to all of you taking care of the details and
making sure things run smoothly.
And you are there for the hospital kids
too. Making blankets, organizing stuffed
animals, loaning and leading your horse
for horse rides when hospital children
come to the Ranch are all part of how
you help the Horsemen stay focused and
deliver on why we are Shriners.
So…to all of you, and you know who
you are…a BIG and heartfelt tip of the
Stetson.

“Wearing the GOLD!”
Greetings,Nobles,
The Drum Corps had a great time at
this year’s MSA. I would like to officially
thank Illustrious Potentate Adrian and
his Lady Mary for such fine hospitality.
Thanks to the Aides and their Ladies for
a wonderful room with more than we
could eat and drink.Thank you from the
Zurah Zuhrah Drum Corps. Of course,
big thanks and congratulations to Brian
McEachern and the entire Ahmed Shrine
for putting on a fun, exciting and entertaining convention this year. Michigan
was great to us and we can’t wait to see
you in Minneapolis next year.
This past MSA in Marquette was fantastic and I can’t wait for us to host in
2017. The coming together of Shrine
Temples throughout the Midwest is
great to see and even better to experience. Parades, meetings, workshops and
dinner events, these things are on the
schedule and they’re pertinent and well
executed. The 10-hour ‘Wayside-rest’
tour, taking in sights, playing with the
Corps through a town and end at a
block party (maybe next time, Eric) and
of course, impromptu sing-alongs in the
wee hours of the morning with some
rousing and earnest Shriners – these are
the things that are not on the schedule
and they’re my favorite parts.
With a heavy heart, I announce our
last parade of the season: The Drum
Corps will be marching in Northfield,
Minnesota, on September 11th for the
Defeat of Jesse James Days parade. The
Grand Parade starts @ 2 p.m. and
begins on Division Street. Come out for
a great, early fall parade and a full weekend of activities. See you on the street!

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – CLUBS
for small (non alcoholic) incident where
my Lady Ann fell off the hammock.
After putting on his plastic badge and
pulling out his plastic gun, order was
quickly restored.
Minnesota Valley Shriners Club continues to enjoy its summer-time activities. Following outdoor outings at
the Charthouse and the Mississippi
riverboat cruise in June, MVSC traveled all the way west to Shakopee on
July 28 and enjoyed the evening on the
deck of Dangerfield's restaurant overlooking the Minnesota river.
We were all treated to delicious
popovers, followed by the meal of our
choice. The evening was complete
with tantalizing libations and good
conversation with friends. We also
had the opportunity to serenade the
Happy Birthday song to Craig
VanMeter for his 67th birthday.
We had a wonderful day at our annual summer picnic on August 13. It was
graciously hosted at the home of Rich
Lyons and Birdie Olson. Their wooded acreage is a combination of a zoo and
arboretum. We enjoyed seeing deer,
wild turkeys, several hummingbirds and
even a pet goat (from the neighbor). In
addition, their flower beds and landscaping are gorgeous. We enjoyed sitting
by the huge bonfire. Rich started this
bonfire either by rubbing two sticks
together or using diesel fuel—I can’t
remember which. Rich and Birdie’s
home and yard is a beautiful and serene
place to relax, enjoy nature, and visit
with our MVSC friends.
Wooded Serenity
We had a big turnout of 52 members,
ladies, and guests. The northern fried
chicken was supplied by Rich and he says
the main difference between southern
fried chicken and northern fried chicken,
is that he serves it with a touch of “love.”
The corn on the cob was freshly picked
that morning thanks to Ed Reiners. A
special thank you goes to our ladies who
brought the delicious appetizers, salads,
and desserts.
Provost Kevin arresting Ann
A big thank you goes to everyone
who helped make our picnic a huge success. We especially appreciate Rich
and Birdie for again hosting this fun
event that we all enjoy every year.
On August 18, some of our members
and their ladies attended the “Party
with the Pote” event at Zuhrah Shrine
Center. Again, those who attended
enjoyed themselves and had the opportunity to visit with fellow Shriners and
their ladies in our new Shrine home.
I want to thank all our members,
ladies, and guests who attended our
summertime activities in June July, and
August. I think those who attended
these events enjoyed themselves.
Now on to our fall schedule. Our
first monthly dinner and stated meeting
will be on September 22 at
Stephano’s Bistro in Burnsville.
Instead of the Italian buffet, Stephano is
featuring your choice of three dinner
entrees - steak, chicken, or tilapia plus
his famous salad along with dessert. All
Shriners, ladies, and guests are welcome. Please let Ken know if you
would like to join us.We promise you an
enjoyable evening.
SAVE THE DATE – October 16
from 8:00 to 12:30, Minnesota Valley
Shriners Club will once again be featuring its world famous French Toast,
Pancake, and Sausage Breakfast at the
Savage American Legion.For the nominal
price of $8, we will also include strawberries, orange juice, milk, and coffee.
Since 1983, we have served over 15,000
satisfied customers. We hope you will
join us. We appreciate your support.

Our August meeting was held at
Dehn’s in Maple Grove. We had a nice
turnout, including a few people that we
hadn’t seen for awhile, I was wondering
if those people showed up in appreciation for my forgetting to put an article in
the Arabian last month. We ordered off
Dehn’s expanded menu for groups that
has both dinners and lighter fare.
Everyone appeared to enjoy themselves.
We went over upcoming Shrine events
and enjoyed each others’ company.
Our September meeting will be held
at the Chanticlear Pizza & Grill in Coon
Rapids on the 2nd Tuesday, September
13th, and we will be ordering off the
menu. In addition to pizza they offer
some dinners and numerous burgers,
sandwiches, salads, etc. There is plenty
of parking and they do have a full bar.
We look forward to seeing you there.
If you are a noble in the north end

Greetings Nobles of Zuhrah and
Osman!
As much as I hate to say it, the summer is growing to an end and cooler fall
weather will be on us in no time. And,
that’s a time for all to have a good
evening dinner and some entertaining
talk with your Brother Nobles and ladies
to keep you warm and have a good meal
under your belt.
In July we had a really nice time on
the the St. Croix River. In August we
had a great picnic at Noble Dean
Yortson and Lady Judy’s place on Cross
Lake, by Pine City. Our hosts were very
gracious to allow us to be at their “vast
estate” for a really fun time.
Now, September is here and we will
be dining at the Blue Heron Restaurant
in Hugo, just north of White Bear Lake.
I would like to take the opportunity to
invite any Noble and Lady interested in
good food and fun to join us there and
perhaps be a part of our little club in the
future. We meet and eat on the third
Thursday of each month (except
January and Ferbruary) at 5:30 p.m. for
dinner. I would be remiss if I didn’t
remind our regular members to be sure
and mark your calendar for that day and
share our evening.
Dinner will be Thursday, September
20, 5:30 p.m. at the Blue Heron
Restaurant, 14725 Victor Hugo
Blvd.,Hugo, MN 55038. The food is
always good and the companionship is
better. Good food and good health go
together and you always get the best of
both when you dine with friends.

Greetings from Ho Ho Area Shrine
Club and Classic Cars—
By the time of printing, HO HO
Classic Cars will have participated in
parades at Winthrop on July 10 for the
Farm City Fun Fest Days. Then July 16
for Belle Plaine’s Bar-B-Q Days. July 23
at Madison Lake’s Paddle Fish Days. July
24 in Montgomery for Kolacky Days,
followed with a get together on the rear
deck at Noble Charles Richter and Lady
Shirley’s.That’s always a fun time – great
food, fine wine and friendship.
Noble Don Conn and Lady Judy;Noble
Brad Hermel; Noble Lynn Mooney and
Lady Wanda; Noble Kevin Pioske; Noble
Charles Richter and Lady Shirley; Noble
Wayne Swenson and Lady Joyce; and
Noble Kevin Thune enjoyed a great time
in Marquette, Michigan, for Mid-West
August 3-6. Friday August 5th, HO HO
Classic Cars was featured on the front
page of “The Mining Journal” of Marquette
along with other units of Zuhrah.
Noble Wayne Swenson, representing
Zuhrah with the “Funsters” took 1st
place in his category with his “stilted”
costume. Great show Noble Wayne, you
really knocked them out of the park!
Noble Kevin Thune “unofficially”
entered his Classic Car into one of the
car corps competitions and recorded
the fastest time through the maze. For
scoring purposes, if HO HO had officially entered two Classic Cars, Kevin
would have won the competition. Way
to go Noble Kevin!
Something to think about for Midwest
2017.We have fast cars and experienced
drivers, we put on approximately 15
crowd pleasing parade demonstrations
every year. I believe we can win some of
these Midwest competitions in 2017.
Returning home on August 6th, we
doubled back on August 7th to Le Sueur’s
Giant Days Parade. The original home of
HO HO Shrine Club and Classic Cars.
Then August 13th in Gaylord for their
Eggstravaganza,where Noble Peter Schue
and Lady Aggie always greet us with a
warm welcome and cold brew. August
12th HO HO “put on” the annual “Corn
Feed” at the Zuhrah monthly stated. I am
sorry I wasn’t able to be there, but have
been informed it was a complete success
in spite of the rain. August 20 – Sleepy
Eye. August 28 – Norwood Young
America. Sep 17 – New Prague.
September 12th will restart our
monthly meetings. Hope to see you in
Montgomery at Richter’s Woods to be
hosted by Noble Charles Richter and
Lady Shirley. We will not meet in
October in lieu of the Annual Pancake
Breakfast to be held on October 2nd,
7am to 12 Noon Sunday morning at the
Arlington Community Center,Arlington.
November 7th will bring us to St. Peter
for dinner at the oasis of Whiskey River
to be hosted by Noble Duane
Sunderman. No meeting in December in
lieu of the Ho Ho Christmas Party.
Location and date to be determined.
With deepest sympathy and regret, the
nobles and ladies of Ho Ho Area Shrine
Club wish to express our condolences to
the family of our Brother Noble Robert
“Jim” Eshleman.Jim was a good man,which
was evidenced by his labors of love to help
children walk. Though he lay down his
Members of HO HO providing the Cornfeed
at the Zuhrah Stated. Left to right: Nobles
David Scheffert, Don Conn, Kevin Thune,
Kevin Pioske, Steven Scheffert,Wayne

September 13th.October 11th we will be
at the Boathouse restaurant in Waseca
(lower level). November 8th will be our
annual stag meeting at the Masonic Lodge
(lower level) for officer elections. Let us
know if you are interested in a leadership
position to contribute to our continued
success. Our annual holiday event and
Officer Installation will be Sunday,
December 11th, at the Masonic Lodge.
Reminder! We will be hosting a cabana
room (theme from the Broadway
Musical “Oklahoma!”) at the 2017
Potentate’s Ball. The Owatonna Area
Shrine Club will be hosting the Zuhrah
Spring Ceremonial the weekend of April
21-22, 2017. We hope all performing
Clubs and Units will be able to participate in a terrific parade through downtown Owatonna. I can assure you, it will
be a great event and fun for everyone!

Kudos to the Owatonna Area Shrine
Club after two successful August
fundraisers. Our Annual Family Fun Golf
Event took place in early August; it was
our biggest success in recent years. We
extend our special thanks to committee
chairman and Past Club President Drew
Joenks for his effort in organizing and
executing this fun event at the Havana
Hills Golf Course. Thank you to the
many nobles who sold sponsorships and
tickets and helped during the day of the
event. Past Presidents Mel Frederick and
Gene Miller were up to their usual
antics at the 9th hole tee-off contest.
We can’t say enough about Noble Matt
Ketelsen and his team at KOWZ radio.
They have been great supporters of this
event and so many others in the past.
Later in August the Owatonna
Shriners staffed the refreshment booth
(pop, water, popcorn, and peanuts) in
the beer garden at the Steele County
Free Fair. Past President Jim Holton was
once again instrumental in the success
of this fundraiser as he has been for so
many years in the past. The booth provides great visibility for the Shrine as the
Steele County Fair is one of the best
attended in the state. Thanks to all the
Nobles who assisted in staffing the sixday fair as well as set-up and takedown.
Our monthly club meetings resume in
September. Please join us at the Elks Club
The Willmar Area Shrine Club has
had an exciting couple of months as well
as a fun filled September! July 31st the
WASC and Litchfield Clubs boarded a
bus with no information except they
were going on a Mystery Trip, which had
the 3 F’s of Shrinedom—Fraternity,
Filanthropy, and Fun. We began our bus
trip in Willmar, picked up some nobles
and ladies in Litchfield and continued to
the new Zuhrah Temple where we discovered the Potentate approaching us
from the Oasis. We enjoyed a wonderful
meal and explored the new Temple. We
jumped back on the bus which took us
to the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital for
a private tour led by our Administrator
and CEO Charlie Lobeck. This was the
best tour many had ever seen, getting
the opportunity to view all the great
renovations and even a couple spots not
included in the regular tour.We were off
again traveling to the beautiful Crow
River Winery in Hutchinson where the
we did a wine tasting, enjoyed specialty
flat breads and live music in the vineyard.
The last mystery for our club was a stop
at The World’s Largest Ball of Twine in
Darwin, by far a highlight for this noble.
At the Twine Ball in Darwin
On August 13th theWillmar Area Shrine
Club hosted the annual Ceremonial / Steak
Fry. The Ceremonial Team, Divan and
Potentate travelled to Spicer, where they
were greeted with sun and a light breeze.
The Ceremonial Team did an amazing job,
and we want to thank you so much for
your dedication to our fraternity. Five
brothers became Shriners that day and in
their honor we ate some wonderful steaks,
corn on the cob, baked beans, coleslaw,
chips & salsa, and dessert. Thanks to Brad
and his brother Greg for hosting us again
this year as well as all the Willmar Shriners
who helped put on this great event.
Up ahead, the Willmar Area Shrine
Circus is quickly approaching and
Charlie Carver Jr and Brad Nichols
are our Circus Chairmen this year.
They have been meeting weekly to get
the advertising and logistics planned
perfectly.
ALL NOBLES: WE WOULD LOVE
TO SEE YOU AND YOUR FEZ at the
Willmar Civic Center on September
16th and 17th for the WILLMAR
SHRINE CIRCUS. The Friday show is
always the best show because of the
energy with every 3rd grader in the fivecounty area being bussed in during
school for the 10:00 a.m. show. Then,
Friday evening there is a public show at
7:00 p.m. Saturday’s shows are at 10:30
a.m. and 6:00 p.m.We will start to set up
on Thursday the 16th; call Charlie Carver
Jr at 612-418-8515 if you are new and
are not sure when and where to help.
Lastly we will have our regular club
meeting on TUESDAY, September 6th, at
the Little Crow Country Club. Social at
6:00 p.m., Stated Meeting at 6:30 p.m. and
Dinner to follow. Our meal will be your
choice of any four delicious entrees and
salad bar for only $10.95 + tax & tip.This
is an important meeting with the final
details on the circus,so be sure to attend!

Greetings! It is leading on toward the
start of the fall season. It has been a bright
and beautiful summer and we are sure
that you made the best of its pleasures.
We of the WSSC,as it still exists, welcome
all to our monthly meetings and camaraderie. The September meeting shall be
held on Wednesday the 24th at the usual
time and place at the Hopkins VFW on
100 Shady Oak Road. Most of the road
reconstruction is completed now.
This year, there was speculation concerning the optional invite to the
Marshall, MN ‘Steak and Corn Festival’
and how much interest it would attract.
t appears that, even with the usual invitation in place, there may have been too
few of our usual WSSC attendees who
were able to go on the first weekend in
August, for various reasons, so we did
not attend. The Marshall Steak and Corn
Fest invite was still appreciated, since it
has always been a welcome event! But
this year the invite from WMSC
(Western Minnesota Shrine Club) to
our club was also turned down, since it
just did not fit in for many members.
For the month of June, when our last
WSSC men’s lunch was scheduled, we
were hoping to have a fairly good representation on that last Thursday of the
month members meeting. It did not happen! That turnout was lower because of
the parking lot reconstruction. But,
Happy to Note: 8 members attended
our July men’s lunch and that made for a
great WSSC midsummer get-together.
The parking lot is now finished, and that
also helps to boost both meeting convenience and turnout.
We are starting the fall months
expecting good representation for the
remainder of 2016. All things bode well
for great camaraderie and we anticipate
having some interesting speakers, for
whom invitations and suggestions are
always welcomed. Indeed, we welcome
any Shrine members to join our festivities and lunch. Please attend!

Hello, BASC!
July was a tough month for us—we
lost Brother Jack Aldridge when the
black camel visited our tents. It was
great to see so many of us at his service
to say farewell. Jack was a great man
who was always smiling and kept things
light.We will miss him dearly.
BASC goes from dark to light in
September with a return to meetings at
the Bloomington Event Center.Please join
us on September 13, 2016, at 6 p.m. for
the social hour and 7 p.m.for the meeting.
We will discuss the upcoming Pancake
Breakfast and other Shrine matters before
the club. Dinner that evening will be
spaghetti and meatballs with a salad,or the
Knight Burger. Please join us to catch up
over a very busy summer.Your input into
the direction of the club is important.
