Festival Guidebook - Columbus Arts Festival
PRODUCED BY
On behalf of the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s board and staff, and all
the Festival volunteers, we would like to welcome you to the 55th Annual
Columbus Arts Festival!
The Arts Festival is proud to be the first festival to incorporate the new
greenways along the Scioto River in its activities. From access by bicycle along
the new park paths, to exploring new activity areas along the riverfront, the
Festival looks forward to encouraging people to discover Columbus’ beautiful
new riverscape.
As the city’s welcome to summer event, the Columbus Arts Festival has been
providing an array of arts activities for Columbus residents and visitors for
more than half a century.
This guide will help you find your favorite artists, activities, food vendors and
performers as well as learn more about our wonderful community partners and
other downtown activities.
The Columbus Arts Festival is produced by the Greater Columbus Arts Council
(Arts Council), the primary funding agency for the arts in Columbus. Funded
by the city of Columbus, each year the Arts Council provides more than
$4 million in support to artists and arts organizations through a competitive
grants process. These programs employ nearly 2,000 artists and impact more
than 434,000 school children annually. In addition the 3.9 million instances
of attendance at nonprofit arts and cultural events each year is 1.44x that of
all local major professional and university home sports attendance. People in
Columbus LOVE the arts and the Columbus Arts Festival!
Our website at gcac.org provides more information about the Arts Council’s
programs and the impact of the arts on our community.
We hope you enjoy your time at the Columbus Arts Festival.

We’re doing all we can to make the
Columbus Arts Festival the greenest event
of its kind in the country.
We took most of our application
processes online saving thousands of
sheets of paper, we’re using the sun
and wind to generate some of our own
electricity, and we’re even recycling
vendor food scraps into compost!
Please help us keep our impact on the
environment as small as possible by using
the designated recycling bins for all plastic
and glass bottles and cans.
The trash cans are for paper and food
waste ONLY.
We thank you for helping make us even
greener!

Relax at this tropical oasis as you enjoy beautiful
views of downtown Columbus. Located on the
Rich Street bridge just east of the Scioto Lounge
sculpture of the deer, the parklet will feature
seating, tropical plants, trees, shrubs and seasonal
annuals, bringing your senses alive with color and
texture. Oakland Nursery, Inc. was founded in 1940. For
over 75 years, Oakland has provided central Ohio
with premiere plant material from our four centers. Oakland’s award-winning landscape, irrigation,
tropical, and streetscape departments provide
custom designed landscapes and installations for
residential and commercial clients. Family owned
and operated, Oakland is proud to be a supporter
of the Columbus Arts Festival by creating art with
living plants.
The Columbus Arts Festival is a great
place for people but not for pets.
Heat and crowded conditions can
make the Arts Festival a stressful and
potentially unhealthy place for dogs
and other animal companions. We
love pets and that’s why we ask that
you please leave yours at home.

Pulse
Situated in the courtyard of the Cultural Arts
Center, with the Acoustic Lounge and VIP
Lounge, Pulse is a modular 3d sculpture created
by OBLSK with support from Capital University
audio engineering students.
The sculpture captures the pulse of Columbus.
Patterns found in the city’s sounds and textures
are translated into light and color, which play
on the surfaces of three floating triangular
pyramids. Through RGB LEDs and video
projection, Pulse comes alive as a glowing prism
of energy, revealing the rhythm of the heart of
Columbus.

MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES is an alternative
movement arts lab, specializing in aerial dance
and other non-traditional performance located in
Franklinton. The focus of the group is providing
quality movement instruction in a supportive, nonconfrontational environment. Additionally, the lab
is home to The Mikey Butane Performance Group,
which strives to create meaningful, well-thought
works that challenge both the performer and viewer.
Issues of breaking rules of traditional modes of
performance, gender representation, and shattering
expected “rules” are inherent in the works.

Movement Activities and The Mikey Butane
Performance Group are founded by people who
are native to Columbus. The group has a vision of
supporting local art, and Columbus born, and trained
artists. Movement Activities will hold pop-up performances
on their aerial apparatus located in the grass lot on
the southwest corner of Town St. and Washington
Blvd. throughout the weekend.

The Emerging Artist program is designed specifically to
support and promote central Ohio artists who have little or
no experience exhibiting and selling their artwork at outdoor
venues. Artists who apply in this category must be residents
of Franklin or surrounding counties, including Union,
Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Pickaway, Fayette and Madison.
Adrianne George
Of the 27 applications received this year, 12 artists were
selected through a blind jury process by panelists working in
various creative disciplines. As part of the program, each
participating Emerging Artist receives assistance from
Festival staff on how to best present their work to the public.
Support your local artists and buy some of their work today!
To find Emerging Artists’ booth locations on site, check out
the Artists listing on page 47.
We encourage local artists who are new to exhibiting at
outdoor shows to apply to the 2017 Columbus Arts Festival.
Applications will be available at columbusartsfestival.org
starting in October.

The Columbus Arts Festival
would like to thank the
Doubletree by Hilton and
the Sheraton Columbus Hotel
at Capitol Square
for being our official hotels.
Thank you for supporting
the arts in Central Ohio.
HORTICULTURE
IS MY ART.
At the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens,
Amanda Bettin cultivates the world’s flora. Because
Columbus is blossoming as a cultural center of the
Midwest, there’s no place she’d rather pursue her craft.
Experience Blooms & Butterflies at Franklin
Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens –
now open.
Learn more about Amanda’s story and
other Columbus artists and events.
