Our board has accomplished a lot this year and here are some of the highlights: wrapping up our bathroom renovation in the oldest part of the building, hiring new office and weekend staff, re-working our Bingo program and the way we operate, personally connecting with our board and conveners, working with the Dance and Baton program for improvements, looking at new programming such as Pickle ball coming this fall, and adding new cabinets into our office. It’s been a busy year. All worth it for our community. With a few things left on my list to due this summer & fall, such as finishing up the job descriptions and policies, booking board member training, working on a new and improved Winakwa equipment room, and looking for a few new board members to join us in September (Positions that will be open: Hall rentals, Website / Publicity, Vice-President etc.) I’m excited to see what the fall and winter will bring. See pickleball write up for more details. I would like to introduce and welcome the newest staff member to Winakwa C.C. Kim Graeili, Kim is a area resident with years of office experience that will help with day to day operations as office assistant. Kim can be reached at [email protected] Welcome aboard! Dino Moran, Facility Manager Basketball While I write this, it is a warm summer day! Although there isn’t much that can beat our summers, I am also a huge fan of winter and the options out there for our community members! Basketball is one of the great options, when looking for a sport for our son/daughter(s)to play. Fitness and fun, learning to play as a team and making new friends are just a few of the benefits. Also, as a spectator, it doesn’t suck that it is played indoors during our long and cold winter! Winakwa Community Centre has been an active part of the WMBA (Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association) since 1988. The WMBA has programs available to boys and girls, ages 4 to 18. The league schedules games for the children 12 and under on Saturdays and 13 and up on Sundays. Just an FYI, there are some days that the teams have 2 games scheduled on the same day. The schedule includes games played at a variety of gyms in community centres and schools and at times that range from morning to late afternoon. The teams usually have at least one practice per week. Practice time and location is only determined after teams are formed and coaches can be assigned a location and time slot that works for them. This past spring 2015 season, Winakwa hosted 4 teams. From what I heard and saw, our teams did well and the players enjoyed their season! Parents had a blast cheering the teams on and the coaches once again, stepped up to help create an engaging and fun environment! I can never say it enough…but “THANK YOU” to the coaches! As basketball convenor, I am grateful for all of you who stepped up. Without you, some of these young athletes did not have a team to play on. As a parent, I thank you for sharing your knowledge of the game and passion for the sport with these young people! I ask that the parents of these young players take a moment to thank your son/daughter(s) coach. Coaching goes beyond showing up to games and practices. There is often a lot of time spent, planning practice, working on line-ups and bonding with these athletes. They deserve to be acknowledged. I encourage everyone to visit www.wmba.ca for more information about the league, the rules and the fair play policy. See you at fall registration and please consider coaching and/or volunteering for the Winakwa Basketball Program. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Wendy Bowen Bingo Hockey nothing but positive feedback from both the coaches and the parents. Fall is fast approaching and it’s time to start thinking about hockey registratoin for the 2015-2016 season. Last season, Winakwa hosted 2 Timbit and 3 novice teams and I would like to thank all those who volunteered. We are looking for volunteers to help coach and manage the Timbit and Novice age groups. If you coached last year and wish to continue please let me know at your earliest convenience. I want to express my sincere thanks and gratitude in advance to all the volunteers who will help make this a fun filled and successful season for all involved. Registration will be done online once again and should be open at this time through the SBMHA website (www.sbmha.ca). A link will be available on the Winakwa CC website. Registration cut-off date this year is September 9th so please don’t wait. Parents new to the community or to the sport can contact the Winakwa office at (204) 253-4418 or myself at 204228-8372 for more information. Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you all at the rinks in the fall! We are looking forward to next year where a new convenor will also be joining our team to make things run even smoother on and off the field. We were told by a number of the coaches that their teams had chipped in and surprised them with a small gift after the last game of the season, they were thankful for the tokens of appreciation and look forward to seeing what the next soccer season has in store. We would like to give one last great big THANK YOU to all of our volunteer coaches this season and we look forward to seeing you all again next year! Ron Vermette Baseball With another successful baseball season behind us, I would like to take the time to thank all of the volunteers who made it possible. Without the help of the parents, the Winakwa baseball program would not be what it is today! At the time of this writing, the Bonivital U11 AA White Sox are heading to the Provincial Championships! Good luck team! Please watch for my emails over the winter with registration dates and prices, baseball camp info, and tryout info. If anyone is interested in coaching next year and would like to prepare over the winter, there are online courses that can be done ahead of the season. Please contact me for more information. Clare Dickinson Soccer Well the time has come again where we reflect on the past and look forward to the future. This season’s Smurf, Mini and Tykes soccer programs were a success! We saw several changes take place and look forward to more to come in the future. A few of the changes that took place included - Tim Horton’s Jerseys instead of cotton printed shirts, Tim Horton’s sponsoring our jamboree with timbits, medals and small gifts and the addition of a second convenor. One of our biggest successes was the streamlining of the food at the jamboree where we saw Howard and his staff cook, package and provide the food to the coaches instead of having a large line up outside, also this allowed the canteen to provide additional types of food and drinks to the spectators on such a warm sunny day! We had Shannon Palahitski & Nicole Tetrault Ringette Winakwa Ringette is looking for new players to the sport. Ringette is a fast, fun and exciting game on the ice played mostly by girls, however there are a few boys who play. Ringette is a true team sport, involving everyone on the ice. There will be a $20.00 late fee for late registrations and there will be no refunds allowed after October 1st, no exceptions. Tryouts, evaluations and team formations all take place in September. More information on this will be available at registration. If you have any questions please contact: Tara @ [email protected] or Marcel @ [email protected] Tara Gilkes & Marcel Joanisse Pickleball Pickleball will be starting in Fall 2015 at Winakwa CC. What is Pickle ball? A paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for the experienced players. Program starts sept 9th. Mon and Wed from 9am-2pm and Friday from 9-12pm. 1/4 membership for $50.00 or drop in $4.00. The Basics: 1. A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. 2. Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton sized court. 3. Played with a paddle and a plastic ball. Introduction to the game of Pickle ball demo day is held here at Winakwa C.C. Sept 2, 2015 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Come and see how the fastest growing sport in North America is played. Do you have any great photos of Winakwa sports enthusiasts in action? Would you like to see your photos in print? If you are interested in publishing your photos in the Winakwa Community Centre newsletter, please contact Lori at (204) 218-7267. We are currently taking a summer break from Bingo but we had a great finish; our large pot went in the Spring along with many other winnings. This program will start back up in the fall with great door prizes and a free cup of coffee. Be ready for September 14th. Will you be the lucky one? 3 Winakwa Community Centre Indoor Soccer U9-U18 Once again we have our Indoor Soccer Season around the corner. This season starts in October and wraps up in March. You can register your son/daughter in this great sport at Winakwa’s fall registration. This game is a much faster game with less stoppage in play, no off sides and player substitution on the fly. Your son or daughter that enjoys outdoor soccer will find they love indoor. Come outdoor season they are ready to go and thrive! Most games are played on the weekends - girls on Saturday and boys on Sunday. One game a week and most coaches run a practice or two a week. The cost (approx. $300) is a little more than outdoor soccer because the games are played in indoor facilities and it is a longer season. It’s a great game to watch (no rain!). Hope to see you at registration. Roger Moreira Lunch with Santa @ Winakwa Community Centre A fun filled family event with entertainment, food and a visit from Santa! More information, date(Nov/Dec) and tickets to come on our website. Hope to see you there! High Steppers The High Steppers Seniors Club is a group that meets every Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00am to 2:30pm at Winakwa Community Center. This seniors group provides companionship, fun, games, cards, lunch, tea and coffee. We have a few open spots for Wednesday & Thursday If you are looking to get out of the house and meet with other seniors in this area come and join our group. We are always looking for volunteers as well. Volunteering with the High Steppers Seniors Club is a great way to give back to the community. For more information about our program give us a call 204-619-8477 This year we honored two of our volunteers who have retired after many years of service to the High Steppers Seniors Club; Margaret Tonn (18 years) and George Wilkes (15 years). Thanks so much for your love and passion in serving the senior members of our community. Bert Johnson was selected to receive the “Long Time Service” award at this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. He has been volunteering for 23 years as a Board Member, Driver and Thursday Volunteer at the Senior’s Club. It is so wonderful to say thank you to someone who is so kind and gives back so much to others. We also honored one of our seniors who has been with us for 20 years. Simone Joyal has been coming to our program almost since it began. Shelly Glover made a special trip to congratulate Simone and give her best wishes. Thanks Shelly. Our Garage sale will be held Saturday, September 26th. If you would like to rent space to sell some of your treasures please give us a call. You must supply your own table at a cost of $20.00. Make sure you don’t miss this year’s Annual Tea, Saturday, November 14th at 1:00 pm, as it is going to be a “HIGH TEA”. We are looking for donations of China cups and saucers, tea and coffee service ware. We always have lots of good food, fun and great raffle prizes thanks to the community businesses. We sell Regal products, please visit our website at www.hclub. shopregal.ca. The High Steppers will also be selling Grey Cup Winakwa Community Centre 4 Tickets this year. If you would like some please call us at the above number. A special thanks goes out to all our great volunteers who work so hard all year. Softball This year we had a great softball season at Winakwa. Softball registration numbers remained consistent with past years. With community club amalgamations Winakwa had enough players to host 3 teams: • LTP II (7 & 8 year olds) • U10 B • U12 C I would like to congratulate the U10 B & U12 C, after the Bonivital playoffs were finished Winakwa had a Bronze medal for the U10 B and a Gold medal for U12 C. Thank you to all our volunteers & coaches. There is a lot of time that goes into coaching the girls and without volunteers the girls wouldn’t have a program to participate in. Thank you to everyone that helped me through my first year as Softball convener. I look forward to next season. Cortney Stay N’ Play We are a parent run playgroup for children from birth to 5 years old and we are open Friday mornings from 8:45am to 11:00am. Snack time is provided by the parents but coffee is provided by us. Come out and enjoy some conversation with other parents and have the kid’s burn off some energy. We are in need of a volunteer or a pair of volunteers to run the program come September.
