Its hard to believe that Halloween is almost here. I hope that all of our Quarter Midget kids that go Trick or Treating have a happy and safe Halloween. I would love to see some of your costumes, if you would like, email, me some pictures of your children in their costumes and I would be more than happy to get them on the .org site, it would be fun for the rest of the kids that they have met from all over the United States and Canada to see what they were for Halloween. This is a very busy time for QMA, the elections will be under way very soon, the deadline for resumes/ letters of intents were to be postmarked by the 15th of October. The regions that were up for elections were all even regions and there were 2 special elections for Regions 1 and 11 for Regional Director, Region 1 will take over January 1, 2006 along with the even regions, the Region 11 Rd will take over immediately after the ballots are tallied. We also have 3 National Board of Director seats open as well, National vice President, National Safety and National Tech Director. It is very important to vote, in the past the returned amount of ballots have been very low, and it seems as though we always have people complaining or ups et with the way that the regions or National boards are being ran, in order to get the right people in there you must do your part and VOTE, please look for your ballot, it will be mailed to all Full QMA members the week of November 5th and must be RETURNED in the designated envelope and postmarked by November 30th to be counted. Once again I will challenge each region to see who gets the most amount of ballots returned, I will be posting how many ballots were mailed out in each region and how many were returned and will post the percentages. This is also a busy time of year for QMA memberships, many people are renewing their memberships. We will be sending out the applications in the next couple of weeks, we have revised the QMA application, made some changes that the QMA attorney suggested and also added some color to the application this year. We figured that this is the first look at our organization for new members when they fill out an application so we decided to vamp it up some, I think you will be very happy with the outcome!! We were also given only a small charge from the printer to do this which makes it even better. We have started to form our committee to re do the Grands bidding process which was decided to do at last years national meeting. This new process once it has been designed and approved will be announced to the membership. Speaking of the QMA National meeting it will be held the first Monday thru Thursday of February which is February 6th - 9th. The National Board has not decided which day that the Tech seminar will be held on, I have had a few members email me and ask, I have addressed this with the National Board and we will get it decided very soon and posted on the QMA website for everyone to see and so they can make plans. I would also like you to remember to send any accomplishments that your children have outside of QMA, for example Sports or grades we will continue to put them in the Quarter Reporter. I will be giving the Resumes for all Regional Directors and the National Board Positions to Tawnya to post hopefully in this addition so please look for them. I will also be giving the RCP's to Tawnya as well we will put them in the Quarter Reporter or on the official QMA website for all members to see and to view so they can go to their club meetings and tell their Presidents how they feel. If everyone takes time to vote we will all have a say in the way our organization is ran and by whom PLEASE VOTE Patty Abbott QMA National Secretary Page 2 Quarter Reporter Quarter Midgets of America General Ledger Trail Balance As of Sept 30, 2005 Account ID 10000 10400 11200 11300 11500 11600 11700 11900 11950 11960 11970 14400 14600 16600 18000 39005 60000 60020 60030 60040 60050 60070 60080 60120 60130 60150 60160 60170 60175 60190 60200 60210 60220 60230 602556 60270 60272 60273 60274 60278 60279 60280 60290 Account Description Checking Account Bank One Hall of Fame Fund A & B Memberships Receivable Club Charters States Race Fees Grand National Sanction Fees Waiver fees Restrictor Plate Sales Sponsor Income Rulebooks/Forms Charter Returned Office Equipment Tech Tools Accum Depr - Offi ce Equipment Pre Paid Expenses Members Equity Postage National Fedex/UPS Expenses Postage USAC Office Supplies National Office Supplies USAC Conference Calls Travel Expenses Phone/Fax/Email National Phone/Fax/Email USAC Management Fees Legal & Accounting Printing/Copying Expenses Quarter Reporter Expenses Grand Nationals Expenses National Meeting Expenses Office Equipment Bank Charges Tech Equipment/Expense HARDSHIP 2004 Miscellaneous Administrative Internet Expense Restrictor Plate Expenses Promotional Expenses JUDGE VIDEO Hall of Fame Scholarships Sponsorship Forwards HALL OF FAME TROPHIES Debit Amt 102,865.77 20,247.81 QMA Treasurer Credit Amt 161,758.49 1,600.00 12,719.00 24,962.50 24,900.00 4,610.48 30,000.00 226.50 100.00 24,189.89 18,314.75 29,739.27 4,325.00 126,961.16 2,330.32 7,274.38 6,144.35 2,122.28 339.00 6,323.37 29,612.59 10,854.93 678.97 47,500.00 11,163.47 6,000.25 3,060.00 35,325.45 20,099.43 1,417.49 97.39 845.00 5,175.00 1,474.57 3,166.47 9,702.72 690.50 5,100.00 375.00 30,000.00 561.25 Total: 417,477.40 Page 3 Submitted by Kim Kendall 417,477.40 Quarter Reporter CALENDAR OF EVENTS Submitted by Patty Abbott A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU AND APOLOGY I would also like to send an apology to one person that helped out at every grands and I did not mean to not put his name in my article last month but I some how did omit it. I was about 5 or 6 at the time and I recall the thrill of rooting for my favorite drivers who sped around the track and crashed on an occasion, which made all the excitement worthwhile. Witnessing the aggressive speed and watching the metalto-metal contact was a thrill I will never forget and still enjoy today. When I became an adult, which probably was later than I give myself credit for, the love of racing still continued as a passion. After all, if there were going to be a crash, I would be better protected in a tank! Our first race was really a thrill, I was nervous as a cat and scared to death. After the first lap I became more com fortable with the car and became more aggressive. I could do this; we were about 7th in a pack of cars that amounted to about 25. Hindsight, there was 25 crazy people chasing a dream of being a great racer someday or being part of a passion that we all shared. Fun aside, the drivers still raced extra hard for a good finish to close the 2005 season. For some not only was the M onster Dash the last race of the 2005 season, but for our retiring drivers it was their final race at Little T. So in their honor all gathered around the track as these seasoned drivers drove parade laps around the track as the crowd cheered. Then the red flag was waved for these retirees to get out of their cars and take the microphone as each was formally introduced by our club president, Steve Lombardo. Steve then gave each driver an opportunity to say their piece and thank all who helped them get to this point in time. Very emotional for all! Getting back in their cars these drivers made a few more victory laps before exiting the track. But this was not the last we were to see them. All the retirees returned to the center of the track and posed as a group for many cloudy eyed friends and family. Li t t l eTSpe e dway’ s2005Re t i r i ngdr i ve r s ! Racing schedule shifted to Friday nights throughout the summer until the highlight of the season with our annual Keystone Invitational. The 8th annual Keystone Invitational was held over Labor Day weekend. Prior to Labor Day weekend, the club worried about the threat of hurricane Katrina as it traveled up from the south, but the weather cooperated 100% with two perfect racing days. Saturday started off with a moment of silence for the hurricane victims as well as offering all the proceeds from our 50/50 raffle to the Red Cross. This was followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Caitlin Morris. Exciting racing continued through Saturday with 190 cars finishing two complete legs of the three leg monza. Everyone returned Sunday morning for our Pretty Crew, won by the Thrasher family and Pretty Car, won by Tyler Hughes. At 11:00am we all anxiously waited on the track for the candy drop. All drivers, handlers and family members scrambled to pick up thousands of pieces of candy as Sherri Bright dropped them from the airplane. Sunday proved to be another day of excellent racing, including a full field of the exhibition class of the WF Briggs class at the end of the event. As we waited for tech to finish the drivers and handlers enjoyed the Pit Crew Competition, (thanks to Keith & Amber Goodman), which topped the evening off with a lot of fun had by all! The evening came to a close with the final trophy presentation for the drivers. Special thanks to all the clubs that attended and supported DQMRC for this successful event. Page 17 Quarter Reporter South Florida QMA Future Hopes In Finding A New Home By: Terri Sullivant, Publicity Director, Region 13 South Florida QMA was established about two years ago when the personnel from Moroso Motorsports Park wanted to form a partnership and help in building a new track in the South Florida area. The initial plans started out well, and the club began to pick up new memberships. One of our first regional races brought close to 70 cars to race at SFQMA and Moroso Motorsports Park. Unfortunat ely, the management personnel at the top of the Moroso Park changed and the partnership with South Florida QMA fell apart. The costs were too prohibitive to practice and race at the track, thus the club lost its ability to use the track. SFQMA is currently a non-racing charter. As we are all aware, it takes a huge financial and a personal commitment to get a new track built, which could take many years to accomplish. Since the closing of Moroso Park as an option for the club, SFQMA and the regional board have been exerting every effort to find a permanent, or even a temporary home. There is extensive and enthusiastic interest in Quarter Midget Racing for the South Florida area. The first part of this year the Region 13 Board of Directors followed up on a potential solution in solving the track problem. They discovered an abandon go-kart track in Hobe Sound, Florida. A proposal was worked up along with letters and phone calls to Martin County officials. The hope was to acquire a short-term lease agreement for SFQMA. Our early requests were not addressed, and our proposal was turned down. The county is in the process of looking at plans as to how they would like to develop the land for future use. However, with our continued contact with the personnel at Martin County Parks and Recreation, the Regi ona lBoa r df i na l l yr e ce i ve da ppr ova lf r om c ount yof f i c i a l st ohos ta tl e a s toneofSout hFl or i daQMA’ sr e gi ona lr a c e sa tt hi s abandon track. The fence is in disrepair in areas, and the scoring tower looks slightly battered, but it is still standing after the hurri cane season of the past year. The county is not charging the club, or the region to use the track for this event. Therefore, with the help of our Region 13 members all pitching in together to clean up the track, and make it race ready, we should have a fairly decent facility to race on and help SFQMA to reestablish their club as a viable one within Region 13. We were informed that there would not be any type of lease agreement between the SFQMA club, and/or Region 13, and the county at this time. However, through a special event application process SFQMA could possibly race next year on case-bycase basis. Dad and son were talking and got side tracked, next thing you know they ended up buying a quarter midget and not making it to Reno. This was the beginning of their journey into quarter midget racing, the year was 1956. They would spend hours in the garage getting the car ready for the weekend of racing and family fun. Mom would take the movie camera and record the race, but if Timmy was leading all you would see was the sky then the ground, that is how we know if it was a good weekend or a bad weekend. Each weekend they would put their white pants on and load up the family c a re xc i t e dt os e et he i rf r i e ndsa tt het r a c k.Looki ngba c ka tt hef a mi l yphot oa l bum’ syouc a ns e ea l lt hef un,di f f er e ntpi t passes and the changes in cars. After racing Quarter midgets for 5 years and making so many friends, young Tim knew he wanted to keep racing. He drove stock cars and drag cars at the local tracks and had fun but not as much fun as his days racing quarter midgets. In 1970 Tim got the itch again for QMA but had a few problems, he was too old to race one and his daughter was only 2. A light went off and Tim got the kid across the street to drive for him. With the two of them, Eddie and other kids from Redwood Empire Quarter Midget Club Tim and Shari would travel all over to races. There was one race that Tim was handling 5 drivers in 5 classes and by the end of the weekend he was still in great spirits, because he knew these kids all had had a great time. Tim spent many years as the REQMA club president, and as a Regional Director. His love for this great sport showed every time he took a driver through novice training, he always had a smile when the kids would have their first race. Personally I think it took him back to the time him and his dad would be at the track. Tim and Shari spent every vacation taking the kids to race out of town. In 1983 their kids were getting older and the local track had closed up, so Tim decided to sell the quarter midgets and buy a sprint car for himsel f. The family spent many years racing the sprint car and doing well, Tim always followed what was going on in the QMA family remember the good ole days. So she started bugging her mom, who had grown up racing if she could drive a race car too. After a little research the family found her a car and started back into the sport. Due to the fact that there was not a track close by Tim was able to help with training his grand daughter in the parking lot of his shop. I think the first time she drove the car there he was a bit weepy eyed, I know her mom was. By 2001 Tim had his grand daughter racing and both of his grand sons were in novice. The whole family got together at the 2004 western grands where Tim was for the first time able to see all three of his grand children race at the same time. The families had a blast, even had some old friends from back in the day show up and tell old stories; it was a great time for all. 2005 was a full season for the family, Tim had both of his grand sons living in Portland for the first time and he was able to watch every race. His granddaughter had retired and was helping handle her brother and her cousin. Tim built a new flag stand for the club, and made them a new track record board. At the 2005 Western Grands he hosted a 50 years of racing at the dairy booth and had a great time showing old photos and telling old stories to all the drivers.
