Summer also is a time to discover how to become and stay active to develop healthy habits for a lifetime. The benefits are far greater than just physical health. Camps provide caring, encouraging environments for children. Adult role models. Camp directors and staff model positive, responsible behavior. Positive peer interaction. Campers interact with other campers who model responsible behavior in safe, well-supervised settings. Creative activities. Campers participate in music, art and drama to encourage and enhance their creativity. Self-esteem. Our staff and activities help campers feel successful and good about themselves. 4 CAMP HELPING CHILDREN THRIVE At the YMCA, we partner with the Search Institute to help adults connect with children and youth in a positive way to help young people thrive. Research shows that there are essential elements that are crucial to their healthy development. We call these elements “Developmental Assets”—the positive experiences, relationships, opportunities and values that young people need to thrive. We integrate these into all our programs and services. The essential building blocks for young people’s successful growth and development fall into eight categories: 7. Social Competencies—Young people need skills and competencies that equip them to make positive choices, build relationships, and succeed in life. 2. Empowerment—Young people need to be valued by their community and have opportunities to contribute to others. For this to occur, they must be safe and feel secure. For more information on what you can do, visit www.Search-Institute.org 8. Positive Identity—Young people need a strong sense of their own power, purpose, worth, and promise. You have the power to change lives. By building assets with the Torrance-South Bay YMCA’s children and youth, you can help them to become competent, caring, and responsible adults. 1. Support—Young people need to experience support, care, and love from their families and many others. They need organizations and institutions that provide positive, supportive environments. 3. Boundaries and Expectations—Young people need to know what is expected of them and whether activities and behaviors are “in bounds” or “out of bounds.” 4. Constructive Use of Time—Young people need constructive, enriching opportunities for growth through creative activities, youth programs, congregational involvement, and quality time at home. 5. Commitment to Learning—Young people need to develop a lifelong commitment to education and training. 6. Positive Values—Young people need to develop strong values that guide their choices. 5 MAIN BRANCH CHILD CARE LOCATIONS (CONTINUED) Hickory Elementary School TORRANCE-SOUTH BAY YMCA 2900 West Sepulveda Boulevard Torrance, CA 90505 310-325-5885 Activity Number: 2800 West 227th Street Torrance, CA 90505 310-530-9381 State License #191671712 PRESCHOOL Riviera Elementary School Levy Adult Center 3420 West 229th Place Torrance, CA 90505 310-530-6882 Activity Number: 365 Paseo De Arena Torrance, CA 90505 310-375-9970 State License #191671718 SPECIALTY CAMPS Seaside Elementary School Activity Number: Activity Number: 4651 Sharynne Lane Torrance, CA 90505 310-316-3411 State License #191671719 Adams Elementary School 2121 238th Street Torrance, CA 90501 310-326-1452 State License #191603070 Towers Elementary School Activity Number: 5600 Towers Street Torrance, CA 90505 310-370-4789 State License #191608532 Victor Elementary School 4820 Spencer Street Torrance, CA 90503 310-370-4133 State License #191602086 Wood Elementary School Activity Number: SUMMER LICENSED CHILD CARE 2250 235th Street Torrance, CA 90501 310-534-3510 State License #197400717 Anza Elementary School Activity Number: 21400 Ellinwood Drive Torrance, CA 90503 310-316-8072 State License #191608526 DAY CAMP AND TEEN LOCATIONS Grades: K-1, 2-3, 4-5 Charles Wilson Park (East Side) 2200 Crenshaw Boulevard Off of Washington Avenue Torrance, CA 90501 Arlington Elementary School Activity Number: 17800 Van Ness Avenue Torrance, CA 90504 310-352-1135 State License #197412182 EXTENDED CARE: Torrance Elementary School 2125 Lincoln Avenue Torrance, CA 90501 310-320-2562 Arnold Elementary School Activity Number: 4100 West 227th Street Torrance, CA 90505 310-373-5212 State License #191671713 6 Grades: 6-9 Good Times Camp 1234 Street Torrance, CA 90500 310-000-0000 RESIDENT CAMPS CAMP WEEKS & PAYMENT DATES Camping Services Office P.O. Summer child care provides safe, fun, licensed, quality care for children ages 4.9 through 12. All children will be swim tested prior to any water trips.
