“Matsuyama Kagami (Mirror)”
Koji Yamaguchi will be back with his shamisen at the JCCC along
with international taiko performer Yoshihiko Fueki.
Rakugo is coming to the JCCC this Spring! Sansho Nakamura will
be coming to the JCCC from Kumamoto, Japan. He will perform
“Matsuyama Mirror” in Japanese first, followed by the English
version. Each performance is about 30 minutes.

"I'm Sansho Nakamura, a rakugo artist visiting from Kumamoto, Japan. Rakugo is a traditional Japanese storytelling art form
which has been performed for over 400 years. In the stories of
Rakugo, various kinds of people live together - sometimes quarrelling, sometimes helping each other. Rakugo depicts scenes
of human life, and provides an occasion for audience to laugh
at their own foolishness, and also appreciate the charming and
humane parts of us all.
The featured story for this event is "Matsuyama mirror". The
story takes place a long time ago in Matsuyama village. At that
time, mirrors were not yet widely available. One day, a farmer
named Shousuke saw a mirror without knowing what it was...
Please come to this special performance to listen to the rest of
the story unfold in both English and in Japanese."

Yoshihiko Fueki - Studied Japanese musical instruments from
a young age, and was involved in the start up of the taiko group,
Dacunto. Since then he has been introducing Japanese taiko
within and outside of Japan through solo concerts and workshops.
He belongs to various Japanese musical groups and enjoys
collaborating with musicians from different music genres.
Koji Yamaguchi - Under his grandmother’s (shamisen teacher)
influence, he became a performer celebrated not only in Japan
but also internationally, and teaches shamisen at his own school,
Yamaguchi Koji Sangenkai all over Japan. Yamaguchi has been
the recipient of numerous awards throughout Japan. He is also
a member of the famous shamisen group Hayate, with Kenichi
Yoshida of international superstar Yoshida Brothers as its producer.

Toronto Japanese Film Festival Announces 2015 Line-Up
The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s 4th annual Toronto Japanese Film Festival has announced its line-up for 2015.
The Toronto Japanese Film festival is dedicated to showcasing the finest Japanese films that have been recognized for
excellence by Japanese audiences and critics, international film festival audiences and the Japanese Film Academy. The 2015
festival will be held from Thursday June 11, 2015 to Friday June 26, 2015 and will feature 19 films including many North American
and Canadian premieres. Some highlights include:
- The North American premiere of Masayuki Suo’s (Shall We Dance?, A Terminal Trust) geisha version of My Fair Lady, LADY
MAIKO starring Mone Kamishiraishi, Hiroki Hasegawa and Tamiyo Kusakari. Director Suo and star Tamiyo Kusakari will be here as
guest of the festival to introduce the film and take questions at our closing reception.
- The North American premiere of Masato Harada’s (Climber’s High, Chronicle of my Mother) KAKEKOMI, a charming Edo-era
comedy-drama that could just as easily be titled :Divorce, Samurai Style!” Starring Yo Oizumi, Erika Toda and Hikari Mistushima.
- The Toronto premiere of Yuya Ishii’s THE VANCOUVER ASAHI with Satoshi Tsumabuki, Kazuya Kamenashi and Mitsuki
Takahata
- The North American premiere of Daihachi Yoshida’s (The Kirishima Thing) thriller PALE MOON starring Rie Miyazawa (who
won the Best Actress at the Japanese Academy Awards), Sousuke Ikematsu and Yuko Oshima
- The North American premiere of A SAMURAI CHRONICLE, based on Rin Hamuro’s Naoki Prize winning novel and nominated

- The North America premiere Ryuichi Hiroki’s May-December romance, HER GRANDDAUGHTER featuring stand-out
performances by Nana Eikura, Etsushi Toyokawa and Sakura Ando

and Fumi Nikaido and winner of Best Film and Best Actor at the 36th Moscow International Film Festival; Best Film, Mainichi Film

A Boy and his Samurai
Director Yoshihiro Nakamura’s (Fish Story, Snow White Murder Mystery) delicious time
travel comedy chronicles the adventures of Kijima Yasube, a samurai who accidentally
travels through time from Edo-era Japan to present-day Japan where he meets a single
working mother Hiroko and her young son Tomoya. He soon finds he has a rare gift that
will allow him to thrive in the modern world…as a Pastry Chef!
The three begin to bond as a family but the time for Yasube to say “goodbye” and
return to the Edo period is drawing close… Hilarious, sweet and earnest, starring Ryo
Nishikido, Rie Tomosaka and Fuku Suzuki. Based on a manga by Gen Araki.

Summer Sessions
Mark your calendars and
don’t miss out on the all
the summer fun at the
JCCC!!! Kamp Kodomo’s
summer session has
started registration. Join
us for a busy week filled
with sessions covering a
wide range of activities
including martial arts,
ikebana, origami, folklore, language, and so much more!
The camp operates from 9:00am to 4:30pm from Monday to
Friday. Sessions will run on July 6 – 10, July 13 – 17, and July 20
– 24. Fees for this program are $200 per child for a 5-day session.
A 10 % discount will be applied for JCCC family members and
additional children from the same family will receive a 5% discount.
If you register before April 30th, you get the earlybird pricing of just
$180 per child!
Extended camp care is available from 8:00am to 9:00am and
from 4:30pm to 6:00 pm with an additional cost of $35 per session.
Camp fees cover all materials, two nutritious snacks per day,
and a special activity each week. Campers are required to bring a
lunch and drink.
Registration has already begun and the registration deadline is
Friday June 26, 2015 and Kamp Kodomo’s maximum attendance is
20 children per session.

New!! Seniors’ Supper Club
The Seniors’ Supper Club is a new club being offered through
Heritage for those seniors interested in learning more about
cooking for one!!
We are planning six monthly sessions starting in April where
participants will experience and learn:
• Hands-on preparation of a meal where participants will prep the ingredients, cook the food, and enjoy the supper together.
• What to look for when purchasing ingredients and shopping for
value and quality
• How to prepare ingredients
• Basic food safety for food preparation, storage, freezing, and “best before date” usage
• Nutrition tips
• Cooking techniques
Each session will run from 3:00pm to 7:00pm, and costs
$20.00 per participant to a maximum of 12 participants per session.
Each session will include a demo chef, cooking assistants, a
handout which will include the list of all of the ingredients required,
equipment needed to prepare the meal, the recipe with cooking
directions, preparation times, and cooking & healthy eating tips.

reception desk to sign up for each session.
JCCC ANNUAL BAZAAR
The JCCC Annual Bazaar committee is busy organizing our biggest one-day fundraiser of the year! So mark your calendar for Saturday
May 2, 2015 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. Please note the new starting time of noon this year! We are opening a half hour earlier. You don’t
want to arrive and find that all the best bargains are gone!!
As usual, the Annual Bazaar is a shopping extravaganza with great deals on Noritake tableware, logoware, lawn accessories,
gardening items, baked goods, etc., plus lots of white/pink elephant treasures and of course our Silent Auction with some great products
to bid on.
There will also be lots of food for sale such as sushi, udon, tempura - for take home or dining in while you take a break from your
shopping spree.
If this is your first time attending, remember to stop at the bank on the way over. Most sales are cash only and we don’t have an ATM
on site. Don’t let a lack of ready cash hold you back from getting that fabulous bargain!

We welcome donations of all kinds – baked goods (including cakes, pies, cookies, squares, etc), Japanese food (including manju,
sekihan, chiraishi, bentos, etc), white elephant, new products, etc. Non-perishable donations can be dropped off at the JCCC reception
desk anytime. Perishable donations that can be refrigerated can be accepted on May 1st and of course on the 2nd.
While we appreciate everyone’s generosity, we are unable to accept any clothing donations.

Spring Festival 2015
After a February that was the coldest in recorded history, Torontonians were desperate for
any sign that Spring was on the way. This must have been the reason why thousands of
visitors flocked to the JCCC for its annual Spring Festival/ Haru Matsuri.
Upon entering the building, visitors were awed by the impressive Hina Ningyo doll
display. But the visual attractions didn’t stop there. Throughout the building were many more
spectacular, one-of-a-kind displays related to the Samurai theme. Included in this array were
several swords from the private collections of members of JCCC's sword appreciation club,
the Token Kai.
In Kobayashi Hall visitors found a variety of vendors, and cultural crafts as well as live
entertainment. Of course, there were also demonstrations of martial arts in the dojos, tea
ceremonies, a vast selection of Japanese food and more vendors throughout the building.
At the other end of our building, we had a bustling room of activities for children, including a
Japanese Style painting activity run by our artist in residence Nao Uda and many enthusiastic
volunteers.
With all that there was to see and do, it was no wonder everyone had a great day!
The JCCC thanks the individuals, groups and organizations that provided the
entertainment and demonstrations. We also thank all the great volunteers and staff, who
helped raise this great community tradition to new and greater heights!

Kamo Room at the JCCC Officially Opens
The official opening of Kamo Room (formerly Multi 2A) at the Japanese Canadian Cultural
Centre was held on Monday March 9, 2015. During this intimate reception with the Kamo
Family, Mr. and Mrs. S. Kamo were presented with the Kamo Room plaque by Gary Kawaguchi,
JCCC President.
Mr. and Mrs. S. Kamo made a generous donation to the Japanese Canadian Cultural
Centre in memory of Denzo and Kiku Kamo.
The reception featured a performance by the Ohana Hula Club’s Golden Luna and Moana
groups, showcasing an example of the cultural classes and activities that take place in the
Kamo Room on a daily basis. Located on the second floor of the JCCC, the Kamo Room is
also a centre of activity for Japanese language classes, ping pong, and dance groups Himawari
Buyo, Ayame Kai and Sakura Kai.
The JCCC is greatly appreciative of Mr. and Mrs. S. Kamo for their generous donation and
support in the promotion of Japanese culture. See the bustling activites in the Kamo Room next
time you visit the JCCC!

Sedai Heads West!
Sedai Corner
We’ve officially turned the corner and entered spring, and Sedai has some fresh updates to keep you in the loop!
First, Sedai would like to thank and acknowledge interviewee Haruyuki “Harry” Okada, for taking the time with
the Sedai Project to document his family’s history through an invaluable collection of photos and anecdotes to accompany his interview.
Having been born into Japanese occupied China shortly before the outbreak of World War II, Harry’s memories of people and places,
captured in photographs but remembered in detail, have added an incredible layer to his recorded interview.
Second, Sedai would like to begin highlighting stories, anecdotes, and individuals who you can learn more about on our website, at www.
sedai.ca. First up is Sedai interviewee and dear friend, Keo Shibatani. After adding his unique voice to our archives about his experiences in
Tashme, and enlightening us on the difficulties many Canadian Nikkei faced upon landing in postwar Japan, Keo has continued to give back
to the community through his spirit of volunteerism. Most recently, Keo assisted the coordinators of the 20th Glendon Annual International
Studies – Japan Symposium, coordinated by York University. Sedai Project friends Frank Moritsugu and Dr. Greg Robinson also took part in
leading discussions of Japanese Canadians and the concepts of identity. For more information on the symposium, which occurred in March,

Lastly, do you know anyone in the greater Vancouver area whose story should be added to the Sedai Project? Sedai will be making a

Current and Upcoming Exhibits
Heritage Corner
At last, spring has officially sprung! Here are the latest updates from Heritage – check out our
upcoming events, exhibits, and more!
This year’s Haru Matsuri saw record attendance, and the Archive and Collections
Committee was proud to be able to create a number of displays throughout the building. Come
check out the ongoing display of samurai culture related artefacts, ukiyo-e (woodblock) prints,
and our spotlight exhibit on the relationship between the Jewish and Japanese Canadian
communities from the postwar Toronto area. Keep an eye out for developing displays near the
entrance to the Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre.
As well, the Ontario Legislative Assembly will be housing a display from the JCCC
Collection beginning in April, running through to the summer. If you have a chance, stop by
Queen’s Park for a free public tour, to see what Archive and Collections has put together on
behalf of the community.
And lastly from our archives this month, the JCCC was thrilled to receive a donation
of two works by Japanese Canadian artist Shizue Takashima. Her works will be on display
beginning in May – look out for them in Heritage Court (at the entrance to the Heritage Lounge).
The Arts Committee has been busy preparing a series of exciting exhibits for the
community and public at large.
First, we are pleased to present an exhibition of works by Canadian artist York Wilson,
for the month of May. These works are a series of paintings based on the poetry of Japanese
poet Hagiwara Sakutaro, which appeared in the publication Face at the Bottom of the World.
In June, our next exhibit will be a presentation by JCCC Artist in Residence, Nao Uda.
Originally from Yokohama, Japan, Nao graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York,
and has shown her work in the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, and Jordan. Her upcoming exhibit titled
“316 Powell Street” is about her grandfather, who was born in Vancouver in 1924. Nao has
created a fictional memory of her grandfather – who had passed before she could hear the story
of his life – through her art. Works on display will be inspired by and researched through the oral
histories and archives at the JCCC, as well as several trips to her grandfather’s birthplace on
Powell Street. Nao and the JCCC would like to acknowledge the support of the Pola Art Foundation in Japan for her upcoming exhibit.
And lastly from the Arts Committee is an open call to artists in the community for ARTSU MATSURI 2015! Returning after a two-year
hiatus, the JCCC Gallery will be home to an exhibition of works in various media, by community members. For artist registration information,
please contact Elizabeth Fujita-Kwan, Manager of Heritage and the Sedai Project, at the details below. The show runs from July 2nd to the
16th – be sure not to miss it!
Lastly, the Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre was pleased to have Seneca Hill Collegiate, and students from Aoyama Gakuin in Aoyama,
Japan, visit the Centre and learn about the history of Japanese Canadians. For many of the students, learning about the history of Japanese
Canadian internment and forced relocation was a new experience. Heritage would like to thank the wonderful Archives volunteers and Sedai
interviewees for their assistance in bringing history to life!

Summer Internships at the JCCC
The JCCC is accepting applications for the position(s) of Collections Assistant and Heritage Assistant, for an internship placement at the
JCCC from June through August of 2015 (dependent on funding).
All successful candidates must meet the following criteria:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada
- will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
- will not have another full-time job (in total, over 30 hours a week between occupations);
- have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the position;
- intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the internship.
Note: Students with a disability are eligible for part-time work.

2015 Sakura Gala

The Sakura Gala is the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s
(JCCC) premier fundraiser. The Gala is a black tie affair that is an
unprecedented celebration of the best of Japanese and Canadian
culture. The prestige and tradition of the Sakura Gala has resulted
in the consistent growth of supporters and sponsors year after year.
In its seventh year, the Sakura Gala will take place on Saturday
May 30, 2015 at the JCCC. Guests will experience an unforgettable
evening celebrating and mingling with top authors and members
of the publishing industry. The evening, hosted by CBC Radio’s
Mary Ito, will showcase hors d’oeuvres and a three-course dinner
marrying Japanese and Canadian flavours. The talented Japanese
singer-songwriter Tatsuya Ishii will perform and there will also be
spectacular silent and live auctions.
One of the Sakura Gala’s many highlights is the presentation of
the Sakura Award. The Award recognizes exceptional contributions
by individuals in the promotion, and exchange of Japanese culture
and enhancing awareness of Nikkei heritage within Canada and
abroad. In 2015, the JCCC will honour Joy Kogawa and Haruki
Murakami with Sakura Awards.
Sakura Gala sponsorships are $10,000 and up, tables are
$5,000 and individual tickets are $500. There are many other
opportunities to support the Sakura Gala such as donating a silent
auction item or buying an ad in the evening programme.

JCCC Volunteer Committee
This year’s Spring Festival saw one of the largest participation of volunteers, with over 200 volunteers involved in every aspects of
the 2-day event. The success of all JCCC events depends heavily on the dedication of our volunteers. In return, the JCCC wants to
ensure that all volunteers are duly recognised. In light of this, the JCCC would like to ask for your partnership in helping us update our
volunteer database. This database is an important tool to keep record of everyone who has contributed their time to the various activities
at the JCCC. The JCCC wants to learn more about the length of time and the kinds of activities that our volunteers take part in. This
information will also be used each year as the JCCC nominates volunteers for Ontario’s Volunteer Service Awards. Therefore, we would
like to kindly ask all volunteers- veterans and newcomers- to fill out a 2015 Volunteer Profile. All information provided to us will be kept

Theatre Production Zero Hour @ JCCC
Miwa Yanagi and her production team treated a full house in the Kobayashi Hall to an entertaining and thought-provoking production
of "Zero Hour: Tokyo Rose's Last Tape". The themes drawn from the play also led to some lively Q&A discussion with producer Miwa
Yanagi herself. This was JCCC's first foray into live theatre on this scale, but given the success of this production, it won't be our last!

JCCC Judo-Kai competitors win in British Columbia

On February 25 to 28, 2015, the Canada Winter Games were held in Prince George, BC.
Three athletes from the JCCC Judo Kai were part of Team Ontario. Brothers Mohab and Shady
El Nahas won gold medals in the Male -81kg and -90kg categories respectively, and Yassin
Youssef won the bronze medal in the Male -60kg category. After their individual competitions,
all 3 of the JCCC Judo-Kai members were selected for Ontario’s entry in the Team Judo event.
In the finals against Quebec, Mohab won his match with a beautiful ippon throw and Shady
won his match in dominant fashion to clinch the Team Judo gold medal for Ontario.
On March 7 & 8, 2015, at the Pacific International tournament held at the Olympic Oval
in Richmond, BC, Shady won double gold by placing first in both the U21 and men’s -90kg
category, and Youssef Youssef won the gold medal in the men’s -60kg category with wins
over opponents from Japan and BC then finishing with a spectacular ippon throw in the finals
against his opponent from Quebec. More good news - as the number 1 ranked competitor nationally in his category, on
March 2, 2015 Youssef Youssef was named to the Canadian Team for the Pan American Judo
Championships that will be held in Edmonton this April.

Fred Sasaki Makes an Estate Gift to the JCCC Foundation
Fred Sasaki was a tremendous benefactor and extraordinary volunteer to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Fred played an integral role
in helping to build a legacy for our community, which will hold for many future generations to come. He was a founding member of the JCCC
Foundation and a dedicated and contributing leader and volunteer at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Fred also shared his stories
about growing up and how his family was affected by the internment with the JCCC’s Sedai Project.
Fred is one of the largest individual donors to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. He was generous to the JCCC in his lifetime, donating
to the JCCC’s capital campaign and was a founding funder of the Sakura Gala. The JCCC honoured Fred with an Ishizue Award. The Award
acknowledges and expresses appreciation and respect to members or friends of the Japanese Canadian community who have made
exceptional contributions to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre over many years.
Beyond these previous gifts to the JCCC, Fred made a provision in his estate for a gift to the JCCC Foundation. The JCCC Foundation is focused
on capital preservation and supports the JCCC annually through a disbursement. The JCCC will always be grateful for Fred’s generosity, support
and leadership.

Internationally acclaimed Japanese Butoh artist Natsu Nakajima
joins a stellar line-up at this year’s CanAsian International Dance
Festival, taking place on Thursday April 30, 2015 to Saturday

time Tokyo-based Nakajima, one of the first women involved in the
Butoh movement, will take part in the biennial dance festival, now
in its 18th year.

On Saturday April 25, 2015, Bravo Niagara! presents a dynamic
duo, internationally-acclaimed concert pianists, Mari Kodama
and her daughter Karin Kei Nagano. Hailed as “Commanding and

established an international reputation for her profound musicality

Sunday JC 3-PITCH League

The Japanese Canadian 3-Pitch Baseball League begin its’ 29th
season of play at the end of May and we are looking for additional
players.
Our non-profit League, founded in 1987, is mixed, with women
and men, of ages 18 to 60+ and skill levels from beginner to
intermediate. Our main objective is to provide a social, yet friendly
competitive environment for persons or families of Japanese
ancestry, as well as those who have an interest or connection
to Japanese culture, to participate and integrate, to meet others
sharing similar culture, heritage and interests, to have fun and to
make friends.
Games are on Sunday (excluding the August long weekends)
mornings (9:30am-12:00pm) from the May long weekend to the end
of August in the Warden and Steeles Avenue area (Scarborough/
Markham border). We host post-game BBQ’s during the season
and provide a subsidized banquet in September. Each team pitches
to their own players (players hit every inning) in a slow pitch/lob ball
format with each player receiving 3 (men) or 4 (women) pitches.
Membership Deadline: Saturday May 9, 2015
Early bird draw for all applications and payments received by
Friday May 1, 2015.
Membership Fee: $75.00 (no increase in 13 years!)
Includes: team sweater, team photograph, refreshments at

2015年第4回トロント日本映画祭
６月開幕！
幅広いジャンルから旬な作品をお届けするトロント日本映画祭が今
年も6月11日から26日にかけて開催されます。今年は19作品の上映を
予定しており、その多くが北米またはカナダプレミアとなります。今回
は映画祭の一環としてバンクーバーのVancouver’s National Nikkei
Heritage Museum and Cultural Centreでの上映も予定されています。

第7回桜ガラ
JCCCにおけるもっとも盛大なファンドレイジングイベントであり、今
年で7年目を迎える桜ガラが5月30日

毎年、桜ガラのハイライトとしてカナダ国内外において日本文化
や日系カナダ人の歴史、受け継がれてきた伝統の理解と発展にきわ
めて高い功績をあげた個人に送られる
「桜アワード」の授与式が行わ
れます。今年はジョイ・コガワ氏と村上春樹氏のお二人のこれまでの
功績を称えます。

山口晃司・笛木良彦　津軽三味線 X 和太鼓ライブコンサート
2015北米ツアー
2013年に小林ホールを沸かせた津軽三味線の山口晃司が今春、和
太鼓の笛木良彦と共に日系文化会館に戻ってきます。
幼少より磨き上げた山口晃司さんの三味線の技と音色、そして
観客と一体となった圧巻のパフォーマンスはまだ記憶に新しいこと
でしょう。
一方笛木良彦さんは常に新しい挑戦を続け、世界を駆けまわる
和太鼓奏者。
この二人のミュージシャンが今回北米ツアー

で旋風を巻き起こします。

中村山椒落語会
JCCCにて久方ぶりの落語の高座が行われます。 日本は熊本からお
迎えする落語家は中村山椒さん。演目は『松山鏡』。
日本語と英語、そ
れぞれ約３０分の高座ですので、最初に日本語で聞いた話を英語と
比べてみるのも面白いでしょう。

日本で落
語をしている中村山椒と
申します。
落語は400年程前か
ら日本で話されている伝
統的な話芸です。落語の
世界では、様々な人々が一
緒に暮らし、時にケンカし
て、時に助けあって生きて
います。そこでは、人間が
持つどうしようもない部分
を、笑い、そして認め、愛す
様子が描かれています。
この面白くも温かい落語
の世界を、たくさんの人に
知ってもらいたいと思って
います。
今回は『松山鏡』
とい
う、昔々、
まだ鏡が全国津
々浦々まで広まっていない頃のお話をさせていただきます。松山村
という村に住む、
しょうすけという男が、鏡というものを知らずに、初
めて鏡を見るところから物語が始まります。
この話を今回は英語と日本語でさせていただく予定ですので、
是非とも聴きにきてください。」
やなぎみわの演劇公演 「ゼロアワー」東京ローズ最後のテープ
面白く、且つ示唆に富んだやなぎみわ演劇「ゼロ・アワ－東京ローズ最後のテープ」の公演はおかげさまで満員御礼となりました。上演後はプロ
デューサーも務めたやなぎさんによる作品の軸についての活発なQ&Aが行われました。

地域住民、
金融機関やスーパーマーケット
の従業員、小・中・高等学校の生徒など様々な方がおり、全国に３００
万人を超える認知症サポーターが誕生しています。

3月7日と8日に開催された春祭りは大盛況でした。
この春祭り
だけに限らず、JCCCイベントがいつも大成功におさめられるの
は、ボランティアの皆さまが、

力し合って働いて下さるお蔭です。JCCCは、常にその皆さまが
安全で快適なボランティア活動をして頂けるよう、安全確保とそ
の運営管理を保っていかなければならなりません。
その一つとして、ボランティア一人一人の個人情報管理の
徹底を開始しました。長期ボランティアの方も、新しくボランティ
アを始める方も、全てのボランティアの皆様の『ボランティアプ

を収集しています。

どのエリアでボランティアをして下さ
っているかの把握、毎年オンタリオ州により表彰されるボランテ

The Seniors’ Supper Club is a new club being offered through Heritage for
those seniors interested in learning more about cooking for one!!
Participants will learn:
 what to look for when purchasing ingredients and shopping for value and quality
 how to prepare ingredients
 basic food safety for food preparation, storage, freezing, and “best before date”
usage
 nutrition tips
 cooking techniques
You must register for each session you wish to take and each session is limited to
twelve (12) participants. Cost for each session is $20.00. Participants should bring
their own apron and head covering (hat/scarf) .
Sessions are from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and include a teaching demonstration,
participants preparing and cooking the meal, and dining together!

Our Mission
To provide a stimulating and educational Japanese and Japanese Canadian cultural experience for young
children.
Who can register?
Children ages 6 (as of December 31, 2014) to 12 Years
Dates
Session 1 – July 6 – 10
Session 2 – July 13 – 17
Session 3 – July 20 – 24
Times
Camp Hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Extended camp care is available daily from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Fee
$ 200/week
Early bird discount $180/week if paid in full by April 30, 2015
10% discount for JCCC Members
5% discount for additional siblings attending the same session (not available with an early bird
registration)
Extended care is $ 35/week per child.

There are two snacks each day and one special activity day per week that may include an offsite

Kamp Kodomo is run by a head instructor as well as many dedicated volunteers. This team
knows that exposure to culture is the best way to ignite interest and to hand over tradition to the
next generation. Together, they work to ensure that the children have a wonderful time in a safe
environment.

Notes on the Nikkei Artists Exhibit, Artists Talk on
March 15th, 2015

In vivid contrast to the worried talk about high levels of intermarriage and the eventual disappearance of Japanese Canadians from the face of the earth, the comments from four young female
Japanese Canadian artists were all about uniqueness, finding their roots and preserving culture.
Through sculpture, ceramics, etchings and dress design, the edgy works of Emma Nishimura,
Hitoko Okada, Laura Shintani and Naomi Yasui express concerns about traditional Japanese elements, gender, internment, uprootedness and relationships between the generations.
WARNING: This is more like a Yoko Ono conceptual art installation than pretty pictures. Nevertheless, the pieces are visually compelling as well as intellectually substantial. “There were stories
that we were never told,” says artist Nishimura. “Now I want to know what happened.” Let the
discoveries continue.
