Footballs are flying everywhere but so too are baseballs as the playoffs have progressed into the World Series – regretfully without the Brewers – and another season will soon find its way into the record books. And at almost every game the fans are singing chorus from the old standard, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”. It makes the seventh inning stretch even more fun – especially if you fulfill the demands of the song and buy some peanuts and Cracker Jacks. This may be a “stretch” of sorts too but the lyrics of that song makes me think of our community and how we are the “home team”. Our schools, churches, the businesses, the organizations and of course the people all are the members of the team that make up our home. These individuals and groups are the players that contribute to the quality of life we all enjoy. Each plays a position in the infield or outfield of the community and each one makes a contribution to the game of life here in Stoughton. As residents, how can we “root, root, root…”? Simple. “Cheer” for the home team by shopping locally; supporting local events by attending; participating in activities in the community; and, by offering assistance as a volunteer. See, I told you it was simple! The home team here has so much going for it. The festivals, the activities, the events – almost every weekend there is something going on with our local “players” offering something for the community. And so what if it may be a fund raiser for the organization putting on the event – it is still offering a “play” that will yield some benefit to you personally and to the community in general. Everything that goes on here benefits the community – everything accrues to the benefit of our “home team” and to you, the fan. But again, don’t just think you can sit in the stands and watch the team perform while you chow down on the popcorn and Cracker Jacks. You need to cheer the team and the individual players. You need to actually get off your seat and play in some of the game. Stoughton’s Victorian Holiday Weekend Offers a Return to Traditional Holiday Values – and Fun All too often, the warm spirit of the holidays is lost in the shimmer of retail glitz. It’s always heartwarming to remember simpler times and connect with family and friends in the true spirit of the season. There’s no better place to do that than in Stoughton during Victorian Holiday Weekend, December 3-4, 2011. This unique winter festival features theater, dance, music, shopping, and sports. Victorian Holiday Weekend is a perfect weekend for friends or families with children. Friends might choose to stroll through a home tour, and enjoy great local food. Families may want to ride the free trolley, see a show, decorate holiday cards or cookies, and be dazzled by the illuminated fire truck parade. Friends will enjoy music at the Opera House, learning about Victorian quilts, and shopping the unique stores and boutiques of this historic, artistic community. Sports enthusiasts can enter the 5K run or 2k walk or build a crazy bed to race in the Victorian Bed Races. Saturday is a whirlwind of opportunity for free and affordable entertainment. The Nutcracker Ballet performs at 1:30 and 7:00 pm at Stoughton High School, and vocal and instrumental groups perform at various locations around town. Santa and Mrs. Claus host a workshop for children. Relay for Life hosts a holiday home tour featuring some of Stoughton’s beautiful homes decked out for the season. A reception and silent auction follows afterwards. Proceeds from the tour and reception once again benefit the American Cancer Society. There are lots of great stores to shop and the Arts and Craft Fair runs both Saturday and Sunday. If your sweet tooth is crying out for cookies the United Methodist Church, Annual Cookie Walk/Sale is the place to go Saturday morning. The Silent Illuminated Fire Truck parade is a family favorite as the sun sets on the day and ends the Saturday schedule with a tree lighting/light display and party at the firehouse. Sunday features the Dickens of a Run with a 5K run and 2K walk through some of Stoughton’s historic neighborhoods, followed by the action-packed, pulse-pounding Victorian Bed Races. The afternoon highlights a free performance by the world-famous Stoughton Norwegian Dancers at the community center and a charming concert by the Stoughton Chamber Singers at the historic Opera House. Spend a day or two in our charming small town for a taste of Christmas without the hype. Experience the best of the season without the stress, or hassle of big crowds, fighting for parking, and commercial overload. It’s a chance to remember why we say Merry Christmas. For a full schedule of events visit VictorianHolidayWeekend.com Stoughton Chamber of Commerce – November 2011 6 East Main Street Reopens – Stoughton Utilities and City Officials Hold Ribbon Cutting Ceremony After more than five months of construction and two years of planning, engineering and design, Stoughton’s East Main Street has been reopened to traffic. Representatives from Stoughton Utilities, Strand Associates, the City of Stoughton, and the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of Stoughton’s East Main Street. Construction began on the $1.2 million project in April, and underground sanitary sewer, water main, and storm sewer infrastructure was replaced. Following completion of the underground work, the street was reconstructed with new base course, curb and gutter, driveway aprons, and asphalt pavement. The street was also made safer for pedestrians with newly constructed crossings. Second Annual Grape Expectations a Smash! th If you attended the September 15 Grape Expectations event you know how great the event really was. Approximately 130 people gathered at Halverson’s Restaurant for an evening of food, wine, art, music and fun! Attendees were given a special event wine glass (sponsored by Gunderson Funeral and Cremation Care) and had the opportunity to try 10 different wines paired with various foods. There were 11 artists displaying their work and two different musical groups performing for the crowd. The money raised helps support the Rae Ladd Volunteer Scholarship that is given annually by the Chamber to a graduating Stoughton High School senior. We also want to thank all of our sponsors: Gunderson Funeral and Cremation Care, Stoughton Courier Hub, Wells Fargo, Nazareth Health & Rehabilitation Center, Business Transportation Solutions, Rosewood Apartments, Coldwell Banker SUCCESS, Stoughton Hospital, Radio Shack, Thor J. Stoughton Chamber of Commerce – November 2011 8 Holiday Light Park Project Progress Report By: Dave Phillips, Executive Director, Stoughton Chamber of Commerce I am happy to report the project is going well! Just in case you may not have heard about this effort, as a part of the Victorian Holidays celebration, the Chamber – with great assistance from Stoughton’s own “Holiday Lights Guy” Marty Lamers – initiated a project that will make Stoughton “the” holiday light place to be. We will have a 25-foot tree on Main Street at the fire station and 12 –foot trees encircling the retention pond below the fire station parking area. The trees will be lighted and the lights synchronized to music that will be broadcast on a low frequency FM radio transmitter. There will also be loudspeakers at the fire station. Santa will light the trees from a “bucket truck” at the conclusion of the fire truck parade on Saturday December 3. It will be a spectacular display for everyone in Stoughton and the surrounding area to enjoy. Here is an update on the progress so far: 1. WPPI contributed 4,000 low energy LED lights for the main tree. 2. The additional lights need for the big tree and the 12 smaller trees have been ordered. 3. The employees at Cummins, Inc. – through their Stoughton Community Involvement Team – have volunteered to fabricate the metal trees. 4. The music system and controller for the synthesizer has been ordered. 5. Fund raising has been going well but – as always – could be better. We are asking for $250 to sponsor one of the smaller trees and have commitments for several. A suggestion: three companies got together and actually split the sponsorship fee. You can do the same thing! Any contributions you can make will be much appreciated. $50, $100 – anything will help! And if you cannot make cash contribution, you can help by donating any of the items on the following list. This project promises to be a wonderful addition to the charm and beauty of our community during the holiday season and for many seasons to come!
