July 2014
A program of Catholic Charities Hawai’i funded in part by the State Executive Office on Aging (EOA)
via contract with EOA and the C&C of Honolulu, Elderly Affairs Division
Message from Dianne Lim - Program Coordinator:
July is going to be so exciting here at the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center! On July 7th
(Monday),
we are welcoming Dr. Kalani Brady and the Hawai‘i Pacific Health Fair. We have over 200 members
already registered! Even if you haven’t registered, please come and participate. You are sure to learn a lot
of great tips on how to remain healthy and active!
Then, on July 25th (Friday), come and meet the candidates who are running for positions, such as: U.S.
Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, State Senate, State House of Representatives, Governor, Lt. Governor, City Council and OHA. At our 2014 Candidates’ Fair, learn about their experience and what they
stand for...in addition to letting them know what’s important to you—our kūpuna. Did you know that
Hawai‘i holds the record for having the lowest voter turnout in the nation? That’s a pretty sad statistic.
Let’s turn it around. Please make sure that you are registered to vote. Your vote does count. What else
can you do to help? You can encourage your children and grandchildren who are of age to cast their votes,
as well. Just go to http://www.novotenogrumble.org/ and register online or pick up a quick form and mail
it in to the Office of Elections. Forms will be available soon at the front desk. Deadline to register for the
Primary Election is July 10th (Primary Election is August 9th). Please remember: If you do not vote, you
cannot grumble. Looking forward to seeing you all at this exciting event!
We will be rounding off the month with another fabulous Cooking Demonstration on July 31st
(Thursday), by Toni Lee and her Korean Cultural Club crew. Come and learn how to make authentic
Korean Chap Chae! YUM! Space is limited. This class is filling up quickly, so please sign up as soon as
possible. You do not want to miss this tasty opportunity!
Last, but not least, Dawn Kawabata, our versatile Program Specialist has reassumed her duties as our
Newsletter editor. I had taken over that responsibility for a while, but now it’s time to return this privilege
back to it’s original owner. Please support her efforts in creating a top-notched newsletter for our
community. Thank you to all the contributors who make this newsletter so interesting to read!
On behalf of the volunteers and staff at the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, we wish you a
wonderful Independence Day ! 

“To vote is the respect the
history that granted us that
privilege. To vote is to
help your state and country
choose positive leaders.
Whether or not your candidate wins, the point is that
you used the voice and
power that was given you.”
Generations magazine, Vol. 4,
No. 3, p. 21
A Special Thank You to Mr. Roy Uyeda in Memory of Mrs. Norie Uyeda
Thank you to Mr. Roy Uyeda and family & friends of the late Mrs. Norie Uyeda for the generous donation of $4,225.00 to the
Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center. Mrs. Norie Uyeda was an active member of the senior center for over 15 years. She
participated in Tap Dancing and Hula classes in addition to ethnic/cultural clubs. Mr. Uyeda made the donation to the Center
because, according to him, “Lanakila has given my wife over 15 years of happiness.” Her infectious enthusiasm and joy will be
missed by her friends here at Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center.
We apologize for the previous month’s posting of donations that did not fully capture the entire aforementioned donation
made in memory of Mrs. Norie Uyeda.

June 21, 2014-Though FCCH had missed President Liwayway Asis and yours truly, Vice President, Lilia Zarzoso
managed to run the affair with the able and willing service of Puna Frank and our dear Pauline Mationg, whom the latter
brought life and energy to everybody and well-liked ex-advisor of FCCH.
Congratulations to the “2014 Father of the Year”, Peter Acosta. Such a remarkable existence and fruitful life,
reaching the age of 83 years. Together with his spouse Luming, who showed their fantastic devotion of being long time
LMPSC members. We salute and honor sincerely, the Acosta couple. The honoree was entertained with the serenade of
Sheldon Campado, who sang “Oh, My Papa”. Everybody had their share of fun on Father’s Day.
FCCH truly and heartily congratulates the June birthday celebrants: Puna Frank, Pauline Mationg, Simeon Campado and Melvin Oshiro. Good luck and more power to all of you.
A reminder to everybody: Show and Sell shall be on August 7, 2014. We urge all to prepare donations in kind or
monetary.
Likewise, the 43rd FCCH anniversary will be on August 23, 2014 (Saturday). Details will be discussed later.

June 4th, a speaker from DCCA came to our club to show us how to spot those mean old con-artist or predators.
They could be anyone. Watch where you put everything.
June 18th, Program Committee Meeting. I learned all the latest news on all the good things the Committee has
done for the Center and Clubs. Dianne and the staff are fighting to keep our second home open and active. Give your
aloha smile to everyone.
June 25th, Birthday babies had cookies, cake, cold drinks, and cupcakes. Songs for the older folks. I enjoyed myself with a smile. Long life to all. Happy everyday. We had a bingo game and I didn’t win anything.

Hello everyone. Summer is here and so expect a lot of hot weather. Our great musicians provides us with terrific
music and dance, what would we do without them—much aloha. Betty and Frances shared about Kamehameha the
Great and other Hawaiian legends since we celebrated Kamehameha Day. We also had a Hawaiian plate lunch. Thank
you all for the delicious meal served. We had a video on Voyagers. Had lunch provided by Ellen, Arthur, Florence,
Mary and Frances. Thank you everyone. Bingo was held after we had lunch with prizes donated. Mahalo Hawaiian Club
and God bless everyone at Lanakila.
We are especially proud of the Hokulea and her sister ship, Hikianalia, that are making history on their journey
that will cover 47,000 nautical miles with stops at 85 ports in 26 different countries. With the stars, ocean currents, winds
and birds to help their navigation, we wish them Godspeed and a fantastic voyage!
All of us want to pay tribute to a truly wonderful person who tirelessly was playing his guitar and singing at practically every meeting and his name is Arthur Kauhini. Hear he is thinking of slowing down (or relaxing) a little more. Our
best Aloha and Mahalo from the bottom of our hearts. We love you!!!

Can you believe it, we’re half-way into the year 2014, and rapidly approaching the summer season. We were super
busy in the month of June with a line-up of educational events. It was fun learning about life skills in food education,
food demonstrations, and as a bonus, members who attended all (5) sessions received a “Certificate of Completion” and a
“Food Skills Cookbook” containing recipes that are nutritious, economical, and easy to prepare.
The up-coming month of July will bring another series of educational events. On July 7th, Hawaii Pacific Health
Fair returns with Dr. Kalani Brady and the Research Scholars Summer students. They will give presentations on health
topics. The deadline to register is July 3rd. Lunch to follow.
Do you need to update or have a Will or Trust done? Attorney Sheryll Bonilla will enlighten you with the legal
aspect on what to do and how to do it. Come and learn how essential it is to establish a legal document to protect yourself and your assets.
July birthday celebrants, including Honorees 90+ Jon Kitashiro and Alice Masuda, are in for a real treat when
once again, the ever popular Island Prayz Band will electrify us with their good humor and up-beat performance.
And, rounding out the month of July, Lyn Baclaan from Kupuna Care Hawaii will give a talk on Alzheimer’s Safety Checklist. Please join us for another fun-filled, entertaining and informative month.

Kaiser Permanente’s Health Education speaker Tiffany Kauanoe-Sagapolutele made an excellent presentation
on May 29 on improving our health in order to prevent some of the life-changing injuries resulting from falling.
The Lynne Nakasone Dance Academy presented an awesome program on June 5. Students from the Academy included children as well as adults and senseis with the emcee explaining each dance reflecting our culture. The children and colorful kimonos kept our attention throughout. The audience joined in dancing the “Ashibina” to end the
morning.
Our Father’s Day celebration on June 12, was made extra special as we were introduced to Champ Kaneshiro,
a professional entertainer/comedian, from a chance meeting with Jane Higa, our President. His hilarious jokes brought
much laughter as was his rapport with the audience. Musician Tony Rivera and dancer Sheniah added an extra touch
to the performance as Sheniah did a New Zealand “hoke hoke” number with poi balls as well as a couple of hulas.
Dancers from Mutsumi Kai entertained us on June 19 as we celebrated our June birthdays. God bless all our
June celebrants and special honorees Kay Tomomitsu and Lillian Teruya, both 89 years young. The entertaining
morning ended with Sensei Wakayama leading us in the Tankobushi.
On June 26 we were once again reminded by Glen Goya and Gregg Takara from Morgan Stanley about the
importance of planning for financial security in our retirement years.
