The album is called Glad All Over and will be released October 9. The tour is supposed to make you feel “glad all over” when Jakob Dylan and company hit the stage in Chicago, Detroit and Columbus, Ohio on November 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Road Notez CHRIS HUPE Nas and Lauryn Hill are teaming up for the Life is Good/Black Rage Tour beginning late October. Nas has a new album out called Black Rage, while Hill will release a single called “Life is Good” sometime before the tour, hence the name of the tour. Check the superstars out November 14 at the Congress Theater in Chi-Town. Aerosmith have announced a handful of dates for the second leg of their Global Warming Tour. The band will release a new album, Music From Another Dimension, November 6 and will sing some of those songs, along with a lot of their classic hits, when they visit Columbus, Ohio’s Nationwide Arena November 25. Sounds like a great way to wrap up your Thanksgiving break. Clutch never seems to stop touring. The band has two dates at The Machine Shop in Flint, Michigan scheduled for Halloween night and the night after and another two dates at Detroit’s St. Andrews Hall November 3-4. Now they have added another area date with the announcement of their annual holiday tour. The date is at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus December 29. On top of all that, Clutch are also working on a new album, expected to be released early next year. Closer to home, Snickerz Comedy Club is bringing a comedy legend to their club for one night only. Pauly Shore is coming to town on Tuesday, October 16. A veteran of comedy most known for his stint on MTV and movies like Encino Man, Son-in-Law and BioDome, Shore will undoubtedly be one of the biggest names to ever grace the stage of the Fort’s only comedy club. Tickets are only $22 and will sell out well before the show. Here’s something for the classic rockers. Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon has a new solo album out called Six-String Soldiers. Hannon recruited legendary guitarists Dicky Betts, Pat Travers, Rick Derringer and Y&T’s Dave Meniketti to play on the album while completing the lineup with vocalist Jeff Sandoval and another guitarist named Mike Araiza, a guy who won a guitar contest Hannon judged in New Mexico several years ago. DIGITRACKS - From Page 6 like.” Working at Digitracks with Middleton and his wife are producers Chad Deutsch and Matt Riefler, along with the studio mascot, an English bulldog named Porterhouse. Deutsch has built a reputation as a highly respected hip-hop producer, while Riefler dabbles in a bit of everything, readily admitting he is not drawn to any specific genre, just good music and good musicianship. And Porterhouse, well, he just seems to chew a lot of things and generally have a good time while doing it. Of his two co-producers, Middleton says they are both “very talented and have brought a lot to the table.” Riefler has produced a number of albums including C-Mob and Life After Death, while Deutsch has worked with a lot of high profile hip-hop and R&B musicians, including Atlantabased rapper Mike Jones. Jones, a multi-Platinum artist, met Deutsch while Deutsch was doing some work in Atlanta with other artists. Jones recorded a few songs with Deutsch at the helm and was so impressed with his work; he followed Deutsch to Fort Wayne to record his new album at Digitracks, spending over a week and a half in the Summit City. “All the music on the new album was recorded here,” says Middleton. “It should drop sometime this year” but the release date has yet to be determined. Deutsch was also instrumental in the recent Hip Hop for the City video project which garnered some national attention. The project featured Fort Wayne rappers representing their city in a song and YouTube video that received over 100,000 plays in just the first few weeks of posting. “There were over 30 rappers in the studio the day we were recording the song,” says Middleton, “and there were only nine parts available. It was hard to pick which ones to include because they were all so talented.” Middleton has some helpful hints for anyone who wants to record a professional CD. “First and foremost, know your sound. Be able to tell the engineer what you want to sound like. Second, know your songs. Be practiced. Don’t try to figure it out in the studio because you’re just wasting your time and money. Third, Be open to suggestions. A true engineer/producer is an outside person who has an unbiased opinion of your sound. They aren’t attached to it in any way. They sit in front of a board every day and can tell what works and what doesn’t. If something doesn’t sound right, be willing to try something else. Almost one hundred percent of the time you’ll find you will get a better product. ABRAMS - From Page 6 in the Top 11 round. That’s when the judges stepped in and exercised their power, choosing to save Abrams and helping him to stick around until the Top 6 round. That’s where his good fortune would run out, however, and he was eliminated at the end of April, 2011. But Idol wasn’t done with him yet. He came back in May to perform a duet with Jack Black, a rollicking version of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls.” He went on the talk show circuit, appearing on The Tonight Show, Live with Regis and Kelly and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Through the summer of 2011 he toured with the American Idol LIVE! show, and in November he recorded a version of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with fellow Idol contestant and Chicago-area native Haley Reinhart. It was a whirlwind, a dream, but through it all Abrams remembered how he’d struggled, and he was determined to give something back to the people who were facing similar struggles. He became a spokesperson for IBD Idols, an organization that aims to raise awareness of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Because the diseases cause potentially embarrassing digestive issues, sufferers are often reluctant to talk about their illnesses, and the public is largely unaware of how severe the diseases can be and how sufferers can overcome their symptoms to achieve big things. Abrams wants to help change that. “It sucked. It really sucked,” Abrams said in an interview with Blogcritics of dealing with his illness on Idol, “but it was a dream I had to be on the stage with millions of people watching. I couldn’t let it push me over at that moment in time. It was really hard, harder than I think I had even imagined. I got over it though. I’m healthy today so that is what’s important. It’s an embarrassing thing to talk about, but I think it needs to be talked about. It was hard even to talk to the doctor about what was going on, but it has to be said.” IBD Icons is allowing Abrams to bring inspiration to IBD sufferers at the same time that he spreads awareness of their stories. “The people that I’m meeting through IBD Icons deserve the spotlight, not me,” he says. “People know me and what I went through with my ulcerative colitis because I was on TV, but their stories are so inspiring, and they deserve the recognition.” All that aside, though, there’s music to be made. Abrams recorded his debut album early this year in London with producer Martin Terefe (who’s worked with Jason Mraz, Train, Mary J Blige and KT Tunstall, among others). “I walked to work every morning to Kensaltown Studios, an amazing workshop filled with musicians, writers and producers,” he recalls. “I buzzed the big green door, went up three flights of stairs into the room with the big green couches and just chilled. It didn’t feel like I was making an album, just having a good time, hanging out and making and writing music with friends. London’s just such a creative place.” The album showcases the completeness of Abrams’ talent; he played bass, guitar, drums, organ and recorder on the tracks, as well as delivering the vocals. The focus on the album, however, is on his vocals, and the record is filled with a menu of soulful originals, along with another duet with Reinhart, a version of Ray Charles’ “Hit the Road Jack.” Abrams is on tour now, promoting the album, working for IBD Icons and building a post-Idol career. Despite all the twists in his bumpy, curvy road, Abrams just wants to make music that people want to listen to. “I want to make music that people love,” he says, and that’s all there is to it.
