Contents
Well, we did it! We made it through one of our most challenging years
to date, and with a beautiful new exhibit to celebrate. For more than half
of 2014, the center of the zoo was a construction zone that disrupted the
visitor experience right inside our entrance. Our events were Sudokulike puzzles, trying to figure out where to fit everything. The main lawn
got a lot of use! We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding
with the tight logistics, and we promise that, this year, our events will
have room to breathe and wonderful new spaces to enjoy!
Last summer was a mad scramble to complete construction and all
the final details of the Watershed Heroes exhibit, but a couple inevitable
delays pushed opening later into August. We bunched our VIP sneak
preview, Zootini event, member preview and Watershed Heroes grand
opening all into 24 hours. I’ll never forget racing back to the zoo after
changing clothes for Zootini, to see Greenway Partners staff hefting
away the construction fences as Zootini guests poured through the front
gates. Talk about down to the wire! As exhausting as it was, it all turned
out better than we’d hoped. Even those of us who had been seeing the
project every day were amazed at how great the whole thing looked
once the fences were removed. And the kids - they’ve been playing in
the water and romping with the otters ever since. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about 2014 was that all this was
accomplished by dedicated staff taking on extra duties. They did an
amazing job holding things together while new staff were recruited and
brought aboard. A heartfelt thank you to them, and also to the animal
care staff who embraced a bigger workload and ensured excellent care
for the Zoo’s new salmon, otters and eagle.
It is an honor and privilege to work amongst such passionate and hardworking professionals who make this such a fantastic little zoo.

President’s Remarks
By almost any measure, 2014 was
a remarkable year for both the Foundation and the Zoo. The Watershed
Heroes exhibit, which opened in August, has transformed the Zoo experience for visitors. Daily attendance has
soared and the average length of stay
increased significantly. Watershed Heroes is such a draw that parents sometimes struggle to
get their children past the otter viewing tube and water
play area to the rest of the zoo. Soon after the opening,
one young mother with two children told me they were
back at the zoo for the fourth day in a row. She couldn’t
get her children to go anywhere else that week!
The opening of the new exhibit also delivered heartening financial results. City of Eureka revenues from gate
revenues have reached new heights, while Foundation
income from memberships and gift shop and café sales
are also at record levels.
It is very gratifying to report that the investment in the
new exhibit made possible by the California Department
of Parks and Recreation grant and hundreds of generous
donations from individuals, businesses, corporations,
and foundations have brought significant economic benefits to both the zoo and the surrounding community.
The project management and much of the construction
was sourced locally, as were many of the materials and
products used in the exhibit; the efforts of local artists
gave the exhibit its aesthetic charm.
Watershed Heroes could not have been the triumph it
has been without our close partnership with the City of
Eureka. The Foundation staff and board, together with
the city’s zoo staff, gave hundreds of hours of time ensure the success of such a major capital improvement
effort. We also had the good fortune to work with experienced and creative zoo architects, Studio Hansen
Roberts, and extraordinary project management by Greenway Partners.
As the Foundation board’s president for the past four
years, I have had the great privilege of serving during a
time of significant progress towards the implementation
of the zoo’s Gateway to the Redwoods master plan.
There is much more to be accomplished, of course, but
we approach the future confident that California’s oldest
zoo will continue to thrive and build on the amazing
advances of the past decade.
But all good things must come to an end and so, at
the Foundation’s annual meeting in December, Linda Jo
Alexander was elected to succeed me as president of
the board. After a period of transition, she will assume
full responsibility for the office on July 1, 2015. Linda Jo
brings strong skills to the position, and she has my and
the board’s enthusiastic support. With her leadership
and a now-fully staffed Foundation office you can expect
to see continued exciting developments at the zoo in the
months and years ahead.

Holly Yashi contributed 30 small aluminum and niobium
fish, valued at $2,500. Embedded with the fish in the exhibit
concrete is $3,000 worth of recycled, tumbled blue glass
from Fire and Light. It’s artful details like these that make
the exhibit so unique.

River Otters
Exciting news from the Watershed Heroes exhibit - North
American River otters are back and are doing wonderfully! In early May 2014 Zookeepers Janée Zakoren and Natalie Parchman were invited to the Oakland Zoo to shadow
the otter keepers and meet the three young brothers who
would soon join the collection at Sequoia Park Zoo. The
day was full of exciting observations for the two keepers
as they were introduced to the daily routines and training
sessions that Etu, Takoda, and Toby were accustomed to.
The boys arrived in June 2014 and settled into the Animal Care Center for their quarantine period. While there,
the keepers were able to mimic the training sessions and
general husbandry the otters were used to receiving in
Oakland and were also able to learn personality traits and
behaviors that made each otter stand out as an individual.
The very curious and social otters seemed eager to please
their new trainers. It is easy to see the intelligence these
guys possess as they move through their behaviors showing off simple behaviors like following a target stick, which
is the technique used to get them onto a scale. Or holding
their noses on the target when asked, which allows keep10
ers to get them to hold still for a microchip reader or to allow for an easier visual exam of the fast moving animals. All three boys are very self-aware and even respond when
their names are called. This behavior is most often used
when separating them into different indoor stalls so each
gets a turn for a training session. Keepers work daily to
reinforce their previous training and also use positive reinforcement to teach these boys new behaviors that will
help with future vet procedures.
In August, once their new exhibit was finished, keepers,
Zoo staff, and visitors were very excited to see how the
otters would use the deep pool with wonderful topography that allows the otters to be at eye level with public, or
high above the Chilean flamingos. Their former zookeeper
and vet tech from Oakland Zoo came to visit the brothers
and both had very positive reactions, to their new home,
exhibit, and night house; they were also excited to see
the boys looking and acting healthy and happy at Sequoia
Park Zoo. Their night house has a bedded-down dry stall
for sleeping, elevated stalls for training, and a stall with
an indoor pool. Keepers stock the night house with many
enrichment items to keep the otters entertained at night.
It is also a dry safe place to sleep and a quiet distractionfree area for training. We may opt to give the otters access
to the exhibit at night in the future, if the plants can withstand the abuse…
Members, visitors, and staff can’t seem to get enough
of the North American river otters. Etu, Takoda, and Toby
continue to be fascinated with the visitors who enter the
tube and line up daily in front of their pond window to
watch the feedings. Whether there is a large crowd or a
single child, the otters are easily entertained and will surely be a favorite for many years to come.

Bush Dogs
RIP Jerry
In 2014, we had the opportunity to add a rare and elusive carnivore
species to Sequoia Park Zoo, using the former bear exhibit for a much
smaller animal that can make better use of the space. “Is it a baby
bear?” visitors ask. “Look at the hyenas!” some exclaim. “I think they’re
African dogs,” people say, as they walk around the exhibit. In truth, they
are hard to identify – they look unlike anything else, and most of us have
never seen one. In the wild, scientists are still working to understand
the amazing little species that is the Bush dog.
Bush dogs are a little-known member of the Canidae family, which
includes wolves, foxes, and domestic dogs. They are found
in a wide variety of habitats
in South America, but are
rare in all parts of their
range. Classified as near
threatened, their numbers are declining in the
wild as biologists work
to gain a better understanding of them. Luckily, Bush dogs have a successful international breeding program in zoos.
In 2014, our Zoo contributed
conservation funds toward a project
surveying for wild Bush dogs that used a domestic dog to search for scat.
Sequoia Park Zoo is one of only ten zoos in the country to house Bush
dogs. Our two-year old brothers, named Mato and Perrito, were born at
the Palm Beach Zoo in Florida. They have been here for over a year now,
and although we had a bit of a rough patch at the beginning – an incident required veterinary care after they scratched their backs while digging a new den in their exhibit - they are now thriving. At the daily 1pm
keeper talk, the boys play, forage, and swim in their spacious exhibit - to
the delight of visitors, surprised to see (or discover!) such a rare animal
at the zoo. We even have visitors travel to Eureka from out of the area
(one as far away as Los Angeles) to see these uncommon and fascinating animals.
Zoo staff is working with other zoos to see if an unrelated female is
available to help us start a bush dog pack one day.
For 11 years,
the Zoo barnyard was dominated by Jerry
the goat. An
original Barnyard resident,
Jerry was head
honcho amongst the goats and sheep
and his mischievous antics made him a
favorite with visitors. Jerry was exceptionally smart. He could open the Contact Corral gates and took romps around
the Barnyard, often stopping by the
chicken‘s food bowl for a quick snack.
A favorite toy of Zoo goats and sheep is
a cardboard box with treats hidden inside. Jerry discovered that, once emptied, the box doubled as a cool costume.
He would put the box on his head and
chase his fellow barnyard critters. You
could almost hear him laughing maniacally as the other animals frantically tried
to evade the scary box-goat monster.
Jerry’s health began to decline in 2014.
He was quite old for a goat his size, over
14 years, and had arthritis. Our vet prescribed medication, which helped prolong Jerry’s mobility and maintain his
quality of life. But one day in January,
he was unable to stand. Keepers stayed
with him, offering his favorite foods and
lots of scratches. When it became clear
that Jerry would not walk again, the decision was made to euthanize him. Surrounded by his keepers and his favorite treats, Jerry rested his head on a
keeper’s lap and quietly fell asleep. For
weeks, dozens of visitors left messages
and pictures in Jerry’s stall. He was truly
a unique goat - cherished by all.

CONSERVATION
The Conservation Fund supports wildlife and habitat
conservation projects beyond the zoo - whether
on the North Coast, or across the globe. One dollar
of each membership goes into this fund, as well as
donations from our free days. Generous folks buying
day tickets also donate their quarters to the cause thank you! Besides our small grants program, funds
also supported the Red Panda Network’s Forest
Guardian program in Nepal.

Frogs & Coffee: Biodiversity impacts on
Jamaican coffee farms • $1,000

Citizen Science Project • $1,000
For her HSU masters thesis, Jennifer Brown tested
800 frogs on 27 Jamaican coffee farms for the presence
of chytrid fungus, a disease which can have devastating
effects on amphibian populations. Her findings will
help inform coffee plantation staff how management
practices can help support native frog species.
Community-based conservation of the rare monkey
Red-capped mangaby in the Ikpa wetland of southern
Nigeria ($1,000)
The Tropical Research and Conservation Centre
surveyed the area for this endangered primate, counting
around 90 individuals. Workshops were held for the local
community on sustainable agriculture, and 500 food
trees were planted in monkey habitat to supply food
sources for both humans and monkeys. Monitoring of
habitat and mangaby populations are ongoing.
Dragonflies rely on a variety of clean freshwater
habitats, which have been disappearing over the last
several decades. Dragonflies are good indicators of
aquatic ecosystem health, but have not been studied
along the northern California coast. Sandra Hunt-von
Arb began a pilot project to train volunteer community
members to “adopt” a local lake, pond, marsh or river
and conduct weekly surveys of dragonfly emergence.
The citizen-scientists enter data using a collection form
on-line, which adds to the national Dragonfly Migration
Project database.

Pilot study of diet and tracking methods with
North American porcupines • $500
Assistant Professor of Wildlife at HSU Tim Bean
tested various diet preferences
on the Zoo’s porcupine resident
Dorsie, and also observed her
reaction to wood samples from
local tree species, to determine
which ones she selected to
chew. This data was then
applied to field testing for the
presence of wild porcupines
in various locations in Humboldt County. This will help
refine porcupine population studies for a species whose
decline in the past few decades has not been studied.

EDUCATION
Super Salmon
This spring, a new comic book to accompany the Watershed Heroes exhibit
arrived at the Zoo. It tells the story of Super Salmon, her encounter with
trash in the stream, and a cathartic survival experience that spurs her to
recruit humans to advocate for clean watersheds. This first episode sets the
stage for future adventures of Super Salmon and the Watershed Heroes. It
is filled with activities and fun for kids of all ages. Pick up your copy in the
Gift Shop this summer!

The heart of our zoo
2014 was full of changes at Sequoia Park Zoo! We were able
to pull off an amazing year, which included some of our
biggest events ever, thanks to the support of our dedicated
volunteers. The Zoo has a number of ongoing (year-round and
seasonal) volunteer programs for young people and adults.

Did you know?
The average Zoo event relies on the support of over 75 volunteers!
Event volunteers dedicate between 3-12 hours of their time before,
during and after events.
Our Youth Assistant Keeper (YAK) Program provides an opportunity
for teenagers ages 11-15 to volunteer at the Zoo during the summer
months. You can also meet our YAK volunteers at our events.
In 2014, Boo at the Zoo provided youth volunteer opportunities for
over 35 elementary, middle and high school students.
Our Zoo Crew animal care volunteers dedicate between 8 and 16
hours of their time each month to Sequoia Park Zoo.
The bamboo we feed our Red pandas comes from volunteers in our
community who cut and gather bamboo in their own backyards.
Many of the zoo keepers and keeper aides at Sequoia Park Zoo
started out as Zoo volunteers.
