2013 spring program - UW
Dear friends, alumni and distinguished guests:
From our storied beginnings in 1909, when the La Crosse
Normal School was founded, to our place of prominence
today in 2013 the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
has grown into one of the best public universities in
the country. Thus we can be proud of many things — in
particular, today’s graduating class.
Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report ranked UW-L
among the top five public universities in the Midwest who
offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees, the highest ranking
of any UW institution in this category. And we also now
are ranked No. 43 in Kiplinger Magazine’s list of the Top
100 Values in American Public Higher Education, further
recognition of our strong national leadership in advanced
education.
A commitment to excellence exists throughout the UW-L
campus, and the accomplishments listed on page five
showcase some of our most notable achievements.
But the greatest testament to our tradition of academic
excellence is the group of outstanding students who make
up today’s graduating class. Each one of them is a point
of pride, and we’re so very grateful for that.
So on behalf of the staff and faculty here at UW-L it’s my
pleasure to thank you for joining us today to celebrate the
crowning achievement of the university experience. The
future holds great promise for our graduates, and I hope
you are as proud of them as we are!
Best wishes,
Joe Gow

Academic Dress
The academic apparel worn by faculty and staff in the processional has its origins in the universities of the
Middle Ages. Because the universities grew out of church schools, both faculty and students were regarded as
part of the clergy, and wore clerical clothing based on monastic dress.
The head covering developed from the skull cap worn to protect tonsured heads in cold weather. In the
universities, the skull cap acquired a point at the top which gradually evolved into a tassel. In Europe, the bonnet
with a tassel is still worn, but has been replaced in America by the mortar board cap or tam with a tassel.
The style of the gown may have been borrowed from the Benedictine monk’s habit. In the Middle Ages, those
with bachelor’s and master’s degrees could be distinguished by the simplicity or elaborateness of their gowns.
The master’s gowns were often furred, a decoration surviving as the three velvet bars now used on the sleeves
of the doctoral gown.
The hood was originally worn over the head in bad weather, and otherwise dropped onto the shoulders.
First worn by faculty and students, the hood is now added to the apparel of those with master’s and
doctoral degrees. The color of the velvet trim on the hood indicates the scholarly field, for example, dark blue
(philosophy), golden yellow (science), light blue (education), pink (music), apricot (nursing), drab (business), and
white (arts). The colors of the satin lining are those approved and authorized by the college or university from
which the degree was earned.
Medallion Symbolizes Authority
Wearing a medallion or seal of office has been a symbol of authority since the Middle Ages. The seal marked
official documents then; heads of institutions wore the seal around the neck to keep it in their possession. The
chancellor’s medallion features a design and materials that reflect UW-La Crosse. The mokume-gane or “wood
grain metal” used is a specialty of the campus jewelry studio.
Mace Shows Quest for Truth
Once a weapon in medieval combat, the mace was adopted by universities as a symbol of the power of the
quest for truth. The mace is carried in the commencement ceremony by a distinguished senior faculty member.
William R. Fiorini, a UW-L art professor, designed and made the medallion and mace, which were used for the
first time at the inauguration of Chancellor Judith L. Kuipers in September 1992.
The mace and medallion were given to the University by Mary Hebberd and Ruth Nixon-Davy, professors
emeriti. Silver plaques on the medallion box and mace stand acknowledge these gifts.
Symbols of Academic Achievement
Many undergraduate students are wearing items that reflect high academic achievement. Commencement
Honors are designated by silver cords, and are worn by students who have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade
point average. Those wearing gold cords have earned Commencement Highest Honors with at least a 3.75
average. Members of the Golden Key International Honour Society are wearing a medallion on a blue and gold
neck ribbon. The organization is open to the top 15 percent of graduating seniors in various fields of study.
Discipline-specific honor organizations are represented by a variety of other cords.
International Flags and Sashes
The international flags displayed on the commencement platform represent the home countries of international
students attending the University. Sashes are worn by graduates who studied abroad. Each sash represents the
country in which the student studied.
College Banners
The banners used in the processional represent the colleges of the university and the colors indicate the
scholarly fields within the colleges. The banners were designed by Arla Wojahn, Educational Technology
Center, class of ‘04 and were produced by Chris Jackson, Mt. Borah, class of ‘91. They were first used at the
inauguration of Chancellor Joe Gow in October 2007.

Even more reasons to be a proud UW-La Crosse graduate …
• UW-L is the highest ranked Wisconsin public or private college in
the Midwest among universities offering bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in U.S.News & World Report’s 2013 America’s Best
Colleges.
• Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation students who
took the national examination for National Council for Therapeutic
Recreation Certification for the first time received a 94.9 percent
pass rate in 2012.
• More than 1,000 people from across the globe took part in the first
massive open online course offered in the UW System in spring
2013. The MOOC was funded by a $50,000 grant from the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation. The free course helps students
enter college and graduate in higher numbers, in less time and at
lower costs.
• UW-L international students contributed more than $9.2 million
to the La Crosse economy in 2011-12, according to NAFSA:
The Association of International Educators. The university’s 406
international students once again placed third in the UW System
for international student enrollment.
• UW-L was again chosen to host the National Conference on
Undergraduate Research. The 2013 event attracted around 3,500
faculty and students from more than 300 colleges and universities
nationwide.
• The College of Business Administration earned the Council for
Higher Education Accreditation Award for Outstanding Institutional
Practice in Student Learning Outcomes in January 2013. It’s the
first Wisconsin college and only the second business school
nationally to be honored.
• The Physics Department was one of only four nationwide to receive
the American Physical Society’s 2013 Improving Undergraduate
Physics Education Award.
• The College of Business Administration was reaccredited by
AACSB International — The Association to Advance Collegiate
Schools of Business in March 2013. The CBA has held AACSB
accreditation since 1985.
• The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center earned the 2012
Wisconsin Department of Transportation Tribal Excellence Award.
• UW-L is listed among Kiplinger’s top 100 colleges and universities
in the country that deliver academic quality and affordability. UW-L
has been on Kiplinger’s Top 100 for more than a decade.
• “It Make$ Cents!” — which offers financial advice for students —
received a 2012 Wisconsin Financial Literacy Award.
• Associate Professor of Mathematics Jennifer Kosiak received
one of only two 2012 UW System Regents Teaching Excellence
Awards for her dedication and ability to inspire.
• G.I. Jobs placed UW-L on its 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools,
honoring the top 15 percent of colleges embracing America’s
student veterans.
• May 2012 College of Business Administration graduates scored
higher than 93 percent of other business students nationwide on
tests measuring subject knowledge in business.
• A predominantly student voting district in the City of La Crosse had
the second highest voter turnout (67 percent) among city precincts
during the 2012 presidential election.

2013 Outstanding Graduates
The Murphy Awards for Academic Excellence
recognize the university’s top two graduating scholars, as chosen by
the Scholarship and Awards Committee. A grant from the Murphy
Foundation created the awards in 1980. Marjorie P. Murphy, foundation
president, cited a desire to recognize outstanding and exceptional
scholastic ability. Recipients receive $1,500 and $1,000, respectively
Tanya Larsen graduated in December with a Bachelor of Science
degree in microbiology with a biomedical concentration. She was a
member of Volunteering Within, Pre-Physician Assistant Club, and
Golden Key Honor Society, and participated in intramurals. Also, she
was a teacher’s assistant in anatomy, physiology lab and fundamental
microbiology lab, and worked in the Microbiology Prep Room. In
January 2012, Larsen traveled to Nepal and India on a medical service
trip with others from campus to bring health education to Buddhist
monks and nuns. Larsen works as a CNA at Hillview Health Care
Center. In May she will join the UW-L-Gundersen-Mayo Physician
Assistant program in hopes of providing health care to an array of
people. She is the daughter of Paul and Ann Larsen, Viroqua.
Jordan Ludwigson graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree
in biomedical science. He has been treasurer and president of the
UW-L Pre-Medicine Club, a blood drive coordinator for the Blood
Center of Wisconsin, a member of both pre-AMSA and pre-SOMA,
a team leader for Relay-for-Life, and an intramurals participant. For
three years, Ludwigson has been a researcher for an EPA-funded
research grant on “Trophic Transfer of Methylmercury in the Lower
Food Webs of Six National Parks in the Upper Midwest.” In fall, he
plans to begin courses at the UW School of Medicine and Public
Health to pursue a doctor of medicine. He hopes to practice medicine
in underserved rural, western Wisconsin. He is the son of Randy and
Joan Ludwigson, Alma.

The Jake and Janet Hoeschler Award for Excellence
recognizes a College of Business Administration graduate for
academic accomplishment and qualities of leadership demonstrated in
campus and community activities. Janet Hoeschler, a 1940 graduate,
established the award in 1992 to signify a partnership of business and
the university. The award extends the Hoeschlers’ belief in excellence,
education, philanthropy and the La Crosse community. Recipients
receive $1,500.
Adam Pugh graduates with a double major in finance and the
Honors Program in economics. He has been involved with residence
hall governance and a resident assistant, and has taken part in
Broadening Horizons. Pugh has been engaged in academic research
and recently presented his honors thesis on trade sanctions at the
National Conference on Undergraduate Research. He is currently
working with several professors to co-author an economics paper on
unemployment spells and call-back rates from employers. Following
graduation, Pugh plans to participate in CUNA Mutual Group’s
Finance Leadership Program, which will expose him to different areas
of corporate finance. After working several years he hopes to pursue
a graduate degree. He is the son of Jason and Beth Pugh, Ripon.
The Strzelczyk Award in Science and Health
recognizes an outstanding senior in the College of Science and Health
for academic achievement and service to the campus and community.
Robert, a 1954 graduate, and Judy Strzelczyk endowed the award in
1996. Also, they have provided funding for physical therapy research
projects, research equipment, student loans, and four full-time tuition
scholarships. Recipients receive $1,000.
Ben Sturomski graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree with
highest honors in physics and mathematics education. Sturomski
has been on the football team where he received conference and
university scholar athlete honors. In the physics/engineering dual
degree for three years, he transitioned into the School of Education
Secondary Teacher Education Program. While completing final
studies in physics education, Sturomski maintained a cumulative 4.0
GPA while transitioning from a football player, to a football assistant
coach. He completed a semester of student teaching at La Crosse
Central High School and West Salem Middle School. Sturomski
plans to attend Northern Illinois University to earn a master’s in
