Braeburn Imani Newsletter Volume 3 No. 32
13th June 2014 Volume 3: No. 32 Braeburn Imani International School Newsletter Dear Parents and Guardians, As we approach the end of the school year it is a very busy time in school so here is a reminder of some of the key dates for you. Academic dates Optional Sats Primary: Begin 16th June High School Exams: Begin 16th June Primary reports issued: 20th June 3, 2014 Primary Parent Teacher Consultations: Play group and FS1 by appointment from 12 noon Monday and Tuesday 23rd and 24th June FS2 and year 1 and 2: from 3.45pm5pm Monday 23rd June Year 3-6: from 3.45-5pm Tuesday 24th June High School full reports and Closing School: Friday 4th July at 12 noon. For many its assessment time and getting the balance right between studies and other activities is a real challenge. Year 9 and 10 have had a study skills session with the Head of Studies, hopefully giving them a better idea of how to approach exams. Lower down the school it is important to ensure we do not put children under too much stress so although they will do assessments it is the ongoing teacher assessment which gives a fuller and more accurate picture of performance and is a more useful assessment tool. Website: www.imani.braeburn.com Other Important Dates Year 12 Work Experience: June 25th -27th June Musical Production of “An African Madonna”: 27th June FABI Family Fun Day and BBQ: Sunday 29th World Cup Day: 30th June Year 6 into 7 Transition Day: 1st July Speech Day and Graduation: 2nd July Finally from me, you may have heard rumours from Nairobi of concerns over school security, please let me reassure you that according to security authorities and advisors there is no new advisory with regard to a change in security status. Best wishes, Catherine Sat Email: [email protected] Page 1 13th June 2014 Volume 3: No. 32 The children in EYFS have been following the Golden rules and below are the Golden children of the week. The children prepared their shopping lists and had some writing material to workout how much they will be spending and how much ‘change’ they will get. At the supermarket, the onon-lookers were amazed to see learning happening in the most unexpected place. And most of all the confidence, enthusiasm and focus our learners displayed. They could not wait to ask questions out of curiosity. Our learners were privileged to handle their own money, choose their own shopping items and interact with the attendants. It was an interesting experience full of Great Learning and Great Fun too! Ziya consulting to confirm the price Sompurna: I need to check if I got the calculations right. Aidan: Shall I take Ribena or……, Clarence: Who wants to by some note books? But they are expensive!! Debbie and Clarence doing what all shoppers would do. Check the prices first.!! Aaron: Aidan, How much is that? ……... Aron: Now what next….. Beading Club at BIPS, Beading, the oldest art man ever knew. It is a skill practiced by many communities in the world from long ago. Currently, beading is one of the money making industries in the world. It ranges from making simple chains and necklaces to more complex house decorations. Beading is currently the most popular club in the primary school and so far learners have had amazing experiences as they choose different kind of beads to recreate necklaces and bracelets. This activity involves a lot of sensory exploration, concentration and perseverance before completing an item. We are glad that members are committed, cooperative and enthusiastic about beading work. Debbie: I love making things with beads. Beading is the best of all. Ziya: But I didn’t like it when my beads fell down. Beading is awesome because we can make necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and toe- ring. Yr 2 Beading has been a great experience for the last three weeks We have made many crafts. People already started making necklaces and bracelets and everything seems to be going well. Beading should be continued until the Beading is very educational-Imani y4 Beading very creative. Imani You can learn new methods. Muthoni It is fun and interesting. Mary world ends. Year 6 We made necklaces with Beading club is the best club ever because we get to learn how to make jewelry using different kinds, shapes and colours of beads. Miss Mbela and Miss Wawira are the Teachers. Year 5 beads. We were told to be groups of five people. For the starters, they used big beads. We enjoyed. Year 3 BRAEBURN IMANI FUN DAY - SUNDAY 29TH JUNE - 2:00 PM TO 6:PM The Family Social Sunday that was organised by FABI ( friends At Braeburn Imani) on the 23rd day of March this year, offered a lot of entertainment to all cadre of parents, teachers and pupils of BIIS, from swimming and footballing games to the bouncing castle for the little tots. All were fully engaged and entertained besides the food and drinks made available courtesy of generous parents who donated out of their own volition. We need to remember that all these activities are geared towards Charity work to be carried out later in the year. As Braeburn Imani concludes it’s first academic year in the new grounds, FABI is organising another social extravaganza for everyone to join in the celebration. This will happen on the Sunday of 29th June 2014 from 2pm to 6:30 pm. There will be lots of breath taking activities for both young and old. These include; coconut shy, pineapple ringer, target on human, tug rugby, tug of war, obstacle race, face painting, mini BIIS world-cup (football) just to mention a few. This morning there was an U7 match at Braeburn School – my kind of football! I especially love the way the kit is always way too big for the little ones, and yet somehow, they manage to run at speed, tackle and score, all without falling over! Fascinating! Fortunately for me, and those like me who are not completely blown away by the “beautiful game”, we have lots of different things going on in our Braeburn schools. However, I must add that we will be screening the first game of the day at the Braeburn Club on the Sports Terrace at Gitanga Road, at 7pm each evening. As ever, Braeburn tries to make sure we keep everyone happy and entertained. BGE Secondary School is wishing a fond farewell to their Leavers with a Graduation ceremony. Please note that seats must be booked with the School Office so I do hope you have done that by now if you are planning to attend. It’s FAB’s second Fun for Each Other Day and the children are Saturday 14 June busy planning their activities and making art projects to sell and Braeburn School raise money for their chosen charity. There’s going to be lots of 1 – 4pm craft items on sale, lots of fun activities to participate in, and some interesting “sporting” activities too! There will be plenty of food and drink on sale, so come along for an afternoon of fun and games, support the children and support charity. All welcome, but all children must be accompanied by an adult please. Saturday 14 June @ 7pm Nairobi Orchestra will be in Concert at Braeburn Theatre. The programme consists of: Nicolai – “The Merry Wives of Windsor Sunday 15 June @ 3pm Braeburn Theatre, Overture”; Mozart – “Concerto in C for Flute & Harp”; Schubert – “Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished)’ and Beethoven – “Leonore Gitanga Road, Lavington Overture No. 3”. Returning Guest Conductor: Steve Dummer. Soloists: Claire Hollis (Flute) & Sarah Vohya (Harp). Leader: Brian Sempele. Tickets: Ksh800/- at the door. Students (with ID) / Senior Citizens: Ksh500/-. We welcome guest speaker Melanie Bruns to our latest Creative Wednesday 18 June Braeburn Coffee Shop, Coffee Conversation. She will be speaking about the “SocialEmotional Development of a Teenager”, and give advice on how to Gitanga Road deal with some of the changes that the young people go through. 9 – 10.30am Whilst this talk is free of charge, we do need a minimum number of attendees. If you would like to come and hear Mel, please let Debs know on email [email protected] or call her on 0713 205280. We need final numbers by Tuesday lunch time please. All welcome, so do invite your friends and family. So get baking and send lots of lovely goodies in to be sold. And don’t forget to take money so you can buy some too! “Robin Hood” is back on the Braeburn stage! I see this time that Wednesday 18 June Robin Hood not only has a band of Merry Men, but a few Merry Braeburn School Women too! I love the 21st century! The story, fast paced and 1.45pm exciting (don’t forget the archery competition!), is brought to life by a very talented cast of actors, singers and dancers from Years 3 and 4. You are all invited to come along and support them. You are sure to enjoy the show! It’s the Braeburn School Science Fayre! 2 days of science Wednesday 18 June celebration! This production gives children the opportunity to develop their innate sense of quality as its underlying theme is concerned with the rights of children. The songs, the poem and dance in African Madonna are all about the child and they all give an insight into the worth of the individual child. It is a “must watch” musical, so don’t miss it! FAB will be holding the Lost Property Sale in the dining room. This is a great chance to pick up some uniform items for the next academic year at a very good price. May we please urge you all to remember to label all items of uniform, so that perhaps we won’t need to have quite so many Lost Property sales! FAB will be holding their annual Car Boot Sale in the Top High School Car Park.
