The chart below shows how they all fit together so you can plan your route through education. DID YOU KNOW? • Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths are equal to a C grade or above at GCSE. • Some Higher Education courses will require you to have full GCSEs. • If you complete a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma with D*D*D* this is worth 420 UCAS points. 8 Doctorate – PhD 7 Masters Degree MA, MPhil, MEd, PGCE, MBA 6 Higher Education 5 Higher National Certificate 4 Advanced 3 Intermediate 2 Foundation 1 3 Entry Level 2 1 Higher National Diploma BTEC Extended Diploma Functional Skills English and maths Academic Scale (the higher the level the more advanced the course) • If you complete a Level 2 Diploma in Travel and Tourism, this is equal to five GCSEs grade A to C. • If you haven’t already got a C in GCSE English and maths then you have another chance – there will be space in your timetable to work towards these qualifications. (It’s what employers are looking for!) University Degree BA, BSc, BEd, BEng A Levels BTEC Diploma GCSE Grades A-C BTEC Diploma GCSE Grades D-F AS Level Higher Apprenticeship NVQ Level 4 or other professional qualification Advanced Apprenticeship NVQ Level 3 Intermediate Apprenticeship NVQ Level 2 BTEC Award Skills for Life / ESOL Course Breadth (the wider the course, the more work is required at that level) For more information please call 0845 155 2020 GC offers a lot of qualifications and we know it can be confusing if you can’t tell a BTEC from an NVQ. That’s why we’ve included a short guide to each course type to help you understand which one might be best for you. If you still need help you can talk to our Student Services and Careers Teams. BTEC AND CACHE DIPLOMAS People who study a BTEC qualification learn about a particular area of employment and can take this knowledge forward to a job or further study. CACHE Diplomas are similar, but cover the Care, Health and Education sectors. A LEVELS A Levels can cover the same subjects as GCSEs and students normally pick three or four topics to study. They are split into two parts — the AS and the A2 — which combine to make a full A Level. NVQS National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) demonstrate that a candidate is competent in an area of work based on national occupational standards. They are usually worked towards via Apprenticeships but some are available as full-time programmes at GC. Consider NVQs if... • You want to show that you have the competence to carry out a job properly. • You’re keen to get into work. • You have a clear idea about the type of work that you’d like to do. Consider alternatives if… Level 3 BTEC Extended Diplomas are equal to three A Levels but allow you to focus all of your energy on the subject that you enjoy the most. If you want to keep your Higher Education options open then make sure that the qualification meets the requirements of the course you wish to take. Consider a BTEC or CACHE if… • You know what you want to do for a job. • You enjoy being assessed through a range of methods including a portfolio and practical work. • You prefer coursework to examinations. BTECs tend to involve fewer examinations than A Levels, although this can vary. Consider A Levels if... • You want to mix and match subjects that you are interested in. This provides a balance of options when considering what to do next. • You want to follow a well-established route to Higher Education. • You want a fixed route to Higher Education. Progression from NVQs can vary and you will need to check with your chosen provider what their entry requirements are. Consider alternatives if... • You don’t like exams. A Levels use them as a form of assessment so if you find exams nerve racking, this may not be the best option. • You don’t want to choose three or four subjects. At Gloucestershire College we are committed to helping you develop your English and maths skills so you can achieve your learning goals and future career aims. All full-time learners on Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 programmes will work towards English and maths qualifications, if you do not already have GCSE grade A* to C in these subjects. You can study these alongside a vocational course. Consider alternatives if... • You haven’t yet identified a career that you’d like to work towards. • You want to keep a range of Higher Education options open. Visit our website www.gloscol.ac.uk 11 APPRENTICESHIPS 12 Apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn – you’ll be doing real work for a real employer while you study for a qualification! GC was awarded Gloucestershire Apprenticeship Training Provider of the Year 2012/13. We offer Apprenticeships in lots of job types and we work with over 700 local employers to arrange work-based learning for our students. The courses include college-based training, workplace assessment and support from your training coordinator. Each course will take either one, two or three years, depending on which level you study. If you are ready for a new challenge, would like to earn some money while gaining your qualification and get a head start in the career of your choice, an apprenticeship could be the perfect choice! HOW CAN I GET ON AN APPRENTICESHIP COURSE? Most Apprenticeships require you to have GCSEs, grades A* to C, in English and maths, but this is not always essential. You must also be 16 or over, and not in full-time education. WHAT IF I’M NOT ELIGIBLE FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP? If you feel you lack the basic skills or confidence to gain the job you want, or you don’t meet the entry criteria for the apprenticeship programme, we have other courses which may help you. Call us on 01452 563404 to discuss your options. HOW IS THE APPRENTICESHIP QUALIFICATION MADE UP? There are three levels of apprenticeship on offer. The difference is in the level of National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) you study for. NVQs are work-based qualifications designed to show your ability to do a job to specific standards. The Apprenticeship qualification is made up of an NVQ Level 2 which is at an equivalent level to GCSEs at grades A to C. Advanced Apprenticeship qualifications include an NVQ Level 3 which is at an equivalent level to A Levels. There is also an Higher Apprenticeship route working towards a Level 4 or higher qualification such as an HNC, HND or degree. All Apprenticeships also include Technical Certificates or equivalent and functional skills. Take a look at our list of options and call us to discuss your application. We expect our apprentices to be proactive, so you’ll need to help find a suitable employer to take you on. This could be your current employer, one from our current list of contacts, or someone from a different business who you’d like to work for. Visit our website, www.gloscol.ac.uk, or call 01452 563404 for more information. All our vacancies are advertised on the website below. Technical Certificates are specific to your area of work and are either earned by assignment or by taking an exam. Functional skills are the knowledge and expertise to assist you in your job. Most commonly these are communication, number, and ICT (Information, Computing and Technology) skills. WHAT CAN IT LEAD TO? Apprenticeships provide good routes for progression. When you finish you will have the opportunity to start an Advanced level Apprenticeship or continue with other forms of education. If you complete your Advanced Apprenticeship you may be able to progress to a Higher Apprenticeship or to a Higher Education course such as a Foundation Degree. Completion of any Apprenticeship course can also lead to full-time employment in your chosen sector. APPLY NOW Programmes are available in the following sectors – we suggest you apply early as spaces are limited. Call 01452 563404 to discuss your application. • Accounting • Business Administration • Children’s Care • Cleaning • Construction • Customer Service • Dental Nursing • Electro Technical • Engineering • Glass Industry • Hairdressing • Health and Social Care • Heating and Ventilation • Hospitality • IT Systems – NEW • Management – NEW • Marketing – NEW • Motor Vehicle • Plumbing and Heating • Retail • Sales and Telesales • Security • Security Systems – NEW • Team Leading • Warehousing and Storage You can also find more general information on the Apprenticeships website, www.apprenticeships.org.uk For more information, please call 0845 155 2020 STILL NOT SURE? • 71% of employers recommend young people do an Apprenticeship (figure taken from www.notgoingtouni.co.uk) • Employers find apprentices 15% more employable than young people with other qualifications (data taken from apprenticeships.co.uk) 13 • Those with higher Apprenticeships are the most employable of all young people (data taken from apprenticeships.co.uk ) • The National Minimum Wage for apprentices is £2.68 per hour but many employers prefer to pay more. Research shows that the average salary is approximately £170 per week. Traineeships are for young people who want to work, but who have not yet had the chance to develop the skills or gain the experience needed to get a job or an apprenticeship. Traineeships are for 16 to 24-year-olds, and prepare them for work by focussing on: • Skills employers want • English and maths for work • Work experience The programme lasts a maximum of six months. By the end of it you will have secured either a job or an Apprenticeship, and be able to continue your studies in English and maths. Only colleges with an Ofsted rating of ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ are able to devise traineeships so we are proud to deliver this new scheme. For more information, please call 0845 155 2020. It was a surprise and also a great honour to win two awards like this. I think young people should go for it and try to get themselves on to an apprenticeship. The best part of it is you can learn while being at work. ROSEANNA MEEK EDF ENERGY Visit our website www.gloscol.ac.uk 14 Starting at a new college can be quite a culture shock. Although, the project is still very much in its early stages (and is still subject to planning applications), we wanted to give our students an idea of what the future of further education in the Forest of Dean could look like. The £14m development, which would be built to high energy efficient standards, will provide a brand new centre of academic and vocational education. The designs consist of three distinct, but complementary elements; a vocational training college, a Sixth Form centre (jointly developed and run by Gloucestershire College and Dene Magna School), and a central hub providing dining, social and teaching functions for both College students and the wider community. Utilising the expertise and resources of both Gloucestershire College and Dene Magna School, we will be focusing on the expansion of a positive, academic, Sixth Form College culture with an emphasis on excellent teaching and learning, pastoral care and progression routes from A Levels onto further and higher education or employment. The Sixth Form impressions include the creation of contemporary learning spaces equipped with the latest ICT technology, as well as a ‘touchdown zone’; an open plan stepped area suitable for large groups. Possible uses for this space would include lectures from visiting speakers, assemblies and film clubs. Alongside A Levels in the joint Sixth Form, vocational curriculum areas on offer at the new campus will include art, beauty and holistic therapies, business, catering, computing, construction and building services, hairdressing, health, care and early years, fashion, foundation studies, media, motor vehicle, music, outdoor adventure, photography and teacher training amongst others. The plans for the new RFD Campus in Cinderford are hugely exciting. There is still a long way to go, but our key focus is to create a fantastic modern FE learning environment to help learners in the Forest of Dean to reach their full potential. We are working towards creating a space where teaching and learning is accessible everywhere and anywhere; the new campus will provide an inspiring place to work, learn and socialise. LYNNE CRAIG ROYAL FOREST OF DEAN CAMPUS SITE PRINCIPAL For more information please call 01594 838500 The exciting designs feature large panels of glazing, creative open spaces and industry standard classrooms. The large panels of glazing have been included throughout to maximise the views over the adjacent lakes and surrounding forest, as well providing high levels of natural daylight and the opportunity to put teaching and learning on display externally. As the plans for our new campus develop over the next 12 months, you can find the latest updates online at www.gloscol.ac.uk/newcampus. Let us know what you think! We are delighted that the months of hard work have culminated in a design for a new college that will bring the very best education to the Forest of Dean. The journey to this point has been exhilarating for all parties and we are excited about realising our dreams and ensuring that we are part of the very best Sixth Form provision for the area. The future is certainly bright and we are proud to be a part of it. You also must identify what companies need to do to sell their products or services and to make money so they can ensure they continue successfully and generate growth. There are many specific skills areas to investigate such as: finance – recognising how profit and loss works, business development and sales – to make sure products get to customers, marketing – to know how to talk about and promote your products, people management – to create and develop effective teams, and many more. One thing to remember in business is that the world around you is always changing and you need to have a keen eye on your market and competitors’, as well as your own business plan, to make sure you have a competitive edge. This is also a good lesson for individuals as they think about developing their career.” Upon completion, you may move on to a higher education course in events management/business management or seek work directly in industry. Whether you want to work on site or in the technical sector of construction, Gloucestershire College offers a range of career paths that can support you from your first day at work all the way through to management level. Construction offers a broad range of occupational areas to work in and you can choose from working with your hands in a trade environment to construct the external structures of buildings, a craft environment that involves the interior fit out of buildings, such as carpentry or plastering or the building services sector, which provides the infrastructure for buildings to operate, such as electrical installation, plumbing and heating disciplines. In future there will be a far greater demand for up to date workforces as the industry increases the energy efficiency of buildings, cuts carbon emissions from all areas of the building process and reduces waste produced on site. These changes provide the opportunity to get involved with large scale renewable projects, lean manufacturing and water/energy management. Get as much experience as possible wherever you can be creative, be proactive, don’t wait for a job to be advertised, find a company that you want to work for and keep chasing them. Do something different that shows what you can do, don’t just send a CV, create something new… a slide show… a magazine… showcase yourself in a different way so that you stand out. Know who you are, which is hard when you are young, but focus on your strengths and make the most of them. You may not always feel confident or brave but feel the fear and just do it anyway!” RACHEL JOHNSON Rachel is a designer with varied industry experience of graphics, print, textiles and fashion and has been teaching at GC for seven years. Rachel’s most recent teaching developments have been to help create an extended fashion department, building on existing good practice and developing some exciting industry links for the future. Her current professional practice has led to working with Doll events agency, giving students the opportunity to become part of live events based in London and nationwide. “My past industry experience has involved working in costume design, textiles (print and weave), and graphic design to including branding and editorial work. More recently, I am developing promotional material for a fashion PR company. This experience always gives opportunities for students on the course, with guest speakers holding an integral role within the planning and development of the teaching and learning. I really enjoy working with the students who are just at the beginning of their careers; they like to keep me on my toes and ensure that I know what I am talking about by challenging me on a day to day basis!” For new entrants to the motor vehicle industry we would recommend that you take your college education as far as possible and try to get yourself attached to a local garage either through an apprenticeship or taking on weekend work if you are fulltime student as the real world experience will be invaluable once you are fully qualified.” 107 Visit our website www.gloscol.ac.uk 108 The best thing about being a Sports Academy student was the friends I met and the staff who were really energetic and supportive. I hope in the future to begin a career in the sport industry and I know that my time spent with GC and the skills that I have learnt will contribute to me achieving my goal. Catherine said “The best thing about teaching Access to HE is seeing our learners develop from the lack of confidence they display at the start of the course to confident learners in July who are happy to stand up and do a presentation to 30 people without a qualm! Access to HE is a life transforming course that changes our students’ lives and in some cases, the lives of their families. They are often the first people in their families to apply for higher education. They progress from people who didn’t finish school and often consider themselves failures academically to confident undergraduates within one academic year.
