There is a growing awareness that our young people are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature. At our centre, students immerse themselves in all that nature has to offer and, in doing so, have the opportunity to acquire knowledge in a unique way. The beautiful Arundel region becomes an outdoor classroom where students can learn natural science, outdoor survival skills, winter sports, navigation and much more. Set in 155 hectares of natural beauty in the heart of the Laurentian Mountains, the Arundel Nature & Science Centre represents a unique opportunity for young people to engage in meaningful learning, outdoors. All our programs are taught with a “nature mentoring” approach, with a focus on environmental stewardship, personal accountability, empowerment and positive community building. Healthy and Safe Learning Environment Regional studies indicate that our students have positive attitudes about our school environments and the quality of our teaching practices. All schools are working to implement positive behavior plans to promote safe and respectful interactions among students. Recognizing the importance of personal safety and wellbeing, the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board has established Guidelines for Safety and Respect. These are promoted among all of our stakeholders and are supported in our schools and centres on an on-going basis. All of our schools follow the Ministry of Education’s Nutrition Policy as well as our own School Board policy on healthy eating habits and active lifestyles. Breakfast programs operate in many Sir Wilfrid Laurier schools and there is a strong emphasis placed upon physical activity and fitness as well as healthy lifestyle choices in our schools. Each of our schools and centres has a number of security measures such as video surveillance and camera monitoring, as well as contingency and emergency preparedness plans in place to ensure peaceful learning environments for our students. www.swlauriersb.qc.ca/isp Homestay International students will have the opportunity to speak English living with a Canadian family while learning about Canadian culture and lifestyle.
