Step 2: The Compression window will be displayed.
The Overall Compression Meter is based on the total compression of
all titlesets compared to the size available on a blank DVD.
Select a titleset to alter its compression. Note: some titlesets may
not be able to be adjusted but by adjusting another titleset the
program will automatically adjust all titlesets.
Some movies will have specific limitations based upon the
information on the disc. Altering compression on certain titlesets may
not yield desired results. In these cases, you may want to use the
Splitting Option to get your desired results. See 8.3 Splitting.
If a titleset does not take up enough compressible space (for
example a menu below.05GB) altering it will not alter the
compression rates of the other titlesets in a positive manner.
Once you have a titleset selected, you can adjust the compression by
moving the meter up or down. As you adjust the compression for a
specific titleset, the program will automatically adjust the
compression rate of the other titlesets on the disc. Note: If a titleset
does not take up enough compressible space (for example a menu
below .05GB) altering it will not alter the compression rates of the
other titlesets in a positive manner.

Step 2: The Splitting window will be displayed.
Disk 1 will list all titlesets that will be burned to Disk 1. Generally, the
movie will be on Disk 1 but it does not necessarily have to be.
Disk 2 will require copying to multiple discs. You can try to use the
Compression option to avoid writing to multiple discs but depending
on the size of the data you may have to split the data onto multiple
disks. See 8.2 Compression.
Titlesets may be selected individually and be moved from Disk 1 to
Disk 2 and vice versa. This allows more complete control over the
placement of titlesets on both disks.
Split Titlesets At will allow you to pick a cell to split the titleset at. A
cell is simply a portion of a chapter.
• Beginning will separate at the beginning of the chapter.
• Middle will split the selected chapter and put ½ on Disk 1 and
the other ½ on Disk 2.
EXAMPLE: A movie with 20 chapters.
Split Beginning
Split Middle
Disk 1 will have chapters 1 – 13
Disk 2 will have chapters 14 - 20

DVD X RESCUE – Getting Started
9. DVD X RESCUE
DVD X RESCUE is designed to analyze, retrieve, repair, and copy
inaccessible data, images, movies and movie clips, and music from
damaged CDs and/or DVDs.
DVD X Rescue is built on over 10+ years experience with optical storage
including CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD+-R(W). While this does not include
discs that are physically damaged, DVD X RESCUE will:
• Effectively recover data, images, audio and movies from
unreadable CDs and DVDs
• Retrieve Data from scratched, damaged or defective discs
• Recover data created by almost any CD and DVD writing
software.
Today, nearly all computers are equipped with some type of device to
write to optical media, such as CD-R, CD-RW and DVD+-R(W). Everyone
expects data written to such media to be readily retrieved over long
periods of time. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. There are
many factors that can cause you to lose access to data on optical media.
Data loss can be attributed to hardware problems, media problems and/or
software problems. Often, when a disc has become inaccessible, more
than a single factor has contributed to the problem.
Fortunately, such problems that prevent “normal” access to the data can
be bypassed by using DVD X RESCUE.
Some limitations of DVD X RESCUE may include:
• PC Gaming discs are the only type of game disc currently
recoverable by DVD X RESCUE.
• Recovery of some DVD music video discs fail due to
encryption of the originals.
• Discs that are actually broken in half.
• Discs where the foil is missing or completely removed from
an area on the top of the disc.
• Discs where the directory has been destroyed.
• No access to a DVD burner on computer being used.
• Limited hardware on the computer.
• DVD-RAM discs are generally not supported.
• Recovering Quick-Erased data without special hardware.
Page 53/150
321 Studios
DVD X COPY PLATINUM User Guide
DVD X RESCUE – Getting Started
Some helpful tips for DVD X RESCUE may include:
• Be prepared to be patient! Time of recovery can …
- Average 4-5 hours for typical commercially created DVD movies
- Average under an hour for typical music CD
- Average a few minutes and up for a typical data file
- Depends on the level of damage to DVD or CD
- Depends on caliber of computer on which recovery is taking
place
• To ensure you have a successful rescue process, operate DVD X
RESCUE with all other programs closed. It can be operated in the
background while using your computer but it slows your computer
down considerably. To ensure an accurate quality “rescue and
burn” be patient and do not use other programs while rescuing your
information.
• Make sure the appropriate media for your CD/DVD Burner is being
used to successfully create a new DVD or CD of your recovered
data.
• Slower drives can sometimes be helpful in recovery of extremely
damaged files as well as older drives.
• Less sophisticated CD R/W drives actually seem to work better at
recovering data than higher quality drives because the drive does
less of the work and the CD/DVD X RESCUE program takes over
doing the rescue work. The drive itself tries to read the files before
it lets the program try.
• Reduce the number of tries to make the rescue process happen
faster by setting the “Adjust Read Attempts” icon lower. Refer to
Section 7.12 Adjust Read Attempts.
• If the newly recovered DVD/CD is not working, check the
manufacturer of the DVD Player you are using to replay the burned
DVD. It may not be compatible with the media used to burn the
DVD. Contact the manufacturer for a list of compatible players.
• It is much worse to have a scratch on top of a CD than on the
bottom read side.
• CD-RW & DVD+-R(W) disks have a tendency to last approximately
6 months. Therefore, many times information on them can’t be
recovered after that point in time.
• CD-R’s & DVD+-R are recommended for use. They are now
relatively inexpensive and appear to be more reliable than CDRW’s or DVD+-R(W). Plus, they are much more likely to be
recoverable if a problem occurs.

Details Pane
The Details pane displays files associated with the currently selected
session and directory within that session. You can change the way files
and folders are displayed within the View Menu. Refer to Section 9.5
View Menu for details.
•
Any data file. Only a single generic icon is used for all files,
regardless of the content of the file itself. You cannot execute
programs by double-clicking icons.
•
Deleted data file (still accessible). A red border around a file
icon indicates the file has been marked as deleted, the data is still
accessible and therefore you may still copy the file.
•
A red question mark in a yellow circle indicates that the file may
be corrupted. These files need to be examined to determine if the
contents are correct. These files are marked in this manner when one
or more other files indicated as occupying the same physical space on
the disc. Only one of the two files is correct. You may copy the files
with this icon but the data will be unusable.
•
A red X indicates that data for this file is not accessible. A file
icon of X is shown for files that are not physically present on the disc
and cannot be accessed. Files marked inaccessible are not physically
present on the disc and therefore cannot be recovered, copied or
accessed in any manner. However if there is an unattached items
folder, the data may be in that folder, usually without the original name.
Status Bar
The Status bar is the bottom portion of the DVD X RESCUE window and
displays information about DVD X RESCUE and your drive. It will display
various messages as the process goes through each step.

9.3.1 Select Different Device
This icon in the toolbar allows you to choose CD/DVD drive you
will be using to recover data. Selecting this icon performs the same
function as selecting File then Select Device from the tool bar.
The first time you use DVD X RESCUE you will be presented with a dialog
box which looks like the one below. After the first use of the program, the
same device will be selected if a disc is present.
The green dot indicates that there is a disc present and the device is
ready. If you do not see the green dot, you need to insert a disc into your
CD/DVD device.
You may also see other devices besides the CD/DVD devices attached to
your computer. This is normal and you should not select any of these.
Highlight the device you would like to use and click OK.
Click Cancel to ignore your selection.
Click Help to display further information about the window.
If you have a CD/DVD device that is not displayed check the manufacturer
website to ensure you have the latest drivers. If you have the latest
drivers and your device still is not displaying contact 321 Studios

9.3.2 Display Sectors
Note: This section should only be used by someone who has a
highly technical background and changes should not be made by the
average PC user.
This icon in the toolbar will display the contents of a given sector
on the CD/DVD in hexadecimal and character form which can be useful
for diagnostic purposes. All types of discs can be examined, even those
which do not have recognizable data on them. Selecting this icon
performs the same function as selecting File then Sector Display from the
tool bar.
If the device being used supports raw reading of sectors, you can select
sector display in “raw” mode, which includes additional information that is
not normally transferred as data. 16 or 24 bytes of this information
precedes the usual data and 280 or 288 follow it. The length depends on
the format the disc was recorded in – XA or mode 1.
The display area of the Sector Display window has three sections.
Address, hexadecimal and ASCII. Each line contains 16 bytes of data
from the selected sector. The address section shows the address of the
data in the line, the hexadecminal section shows the hexadecimal values
of the data and the ASCII section shows the ASCII characters represented
by the data shown.
Sector Control designates which sector will be displayed in the window.
To move between sectors you can either use the arrow keys or enter a
sector number and press Enter.
MSF Indicator displays the MSF (Minute Second Frame) address format
of the contents of the current sector.

Note: You may see random ASCII characters displayed as a result of
the interpretation of the data in the sector. Random ASCII characters
come from things like audio sectors
9.3.3 Refresh
This icon in the toolbar will start the analytical process over and/or
process a new disc inserted. This can be useful when you change the
disc in the drive or wish to retry looking for some files or folders on the
drive. Selecting this icon performs the same function as selecting View

9.3.4 Copy All Files in All Sessions
This icon in the toolbar begins the recovery of all retrievable files
(i.e., data, images, movie clips, music, etc) on a non-commercially created
CD/DVD if they have not been commercially created. Refer to Section 9.1
Getting Started w/Commercially Created Movies.
This is the recommended technique to recover all of the data at one time
easily with DVD X RESCUE. This will prompt you for a folder to store all
of the recoverable files from the disc to copy. This is the easiest way to
recover everything from the CD/DVD at one time.
When copying entire directories, DVD X RESCUE will ask you for the
directory on your hard drive where you prefer the copied contents to go.
You will not be prompted for individual files even if this is setup in your
user preferences. However, if you attempt to overwrite an existing file with
a file being copied, you will be asked if the files should be overwritten.
The following options will be available:
• Click “YES” to overwrite the file
• Click “NO” to skip this file and continue with others
• Click “OVERWRITE ALL FILES” to overwrite all remaining file without
being prompted
Click OK to continue processing with selected folder.
The Make New Folder button will allow you to create a new folder.
Click Cancel to end process.

9.3.4.1 Copy Individual Files/Folders
It is possible to copy individual files and or folders from a CD or DVD by
selecting the files/folders to be copied and then going to the File Menu and
selecting COPY FILES from the tool bar.
DVD X RESCUE also supports Drag-and-Drop functionality which allows
you to select files and drag them from the Details Pane to your desktop (or
Explorer window).
If errors occur during this process, DVD X RESCUE will bypass the
corrupt files automatically.
9.3.4.2 Copying Audio Tracks
Audio discs there be both data and audio tracks or only audio tracks. If
there are only audio tracks the Copy All icon (7.4) will copy all of the audio
tracks AT ONCE. However, if the tracks have names, the names will be
used as file names. If track names are not present, the tracks will be
named beginning with Track01.wav.
It is also possible to right-click an audio track and select File then Copy
Audio Track from the tool bar. This will copy the audio track as a .wav file.
There can be files that cannot be copied from a disc. Possible reasons for
this are as follows:
• The file is present in the directory but is not actually recorded on the
disc. A red X will be displayed as the icon for these files.
• The file is a resource only file on a Macintosh-format disc. Such files
do not contain any data. The length displayed for these files will be
zero and the normal icon will be shown.
• Because of the way the file was recorded, DVD X RESCUE may not
understand how to access the data on the file. This should not occur
under normal circumstances.
Page 69/150

DVD X COPY PLATINUM User Guide
DVD X RESCUE – Main Window
9.3.4.3 Copy Sectors
It is possible to copy sectors by going to the File Menu then selecting
COPY SECTORS from the tool bar. This option allows the direct copying
of sectors within a track to a disk file. This would be useful for the
following purposes: creating an image file from a track on a disc,
extracting a portion of a song from an audio disc, copying some of a data
file to a disc file without copying all of it or when collecting information
about a disc.
If you are copying an audio track, two formats are possible: CD-DA
and .WAV. Some audio programs will directly accept CD-DA format files
but most will not. Therefore, it is highly recommended that audio tracks be
extracted in .WAV format.
If you will be copying an entire track, sector numbers do not need to be
specified. The currently selected track is used.
If you are copying part of an audio track Start/End sector numbers need to
be specified. For example, a live concert appears as one track. If you
want to extract some particular part of the disc you would use the sector
number specification to control this.
DVD X RESCUE does not support the copying of sectors which span
tracks. If you enter sector numbers, you must also designate the location
and name of the output file you’d like to create. By default, the extension
of the output file is .RAW but if you want to use the output file for CD
mastering you may want to use the .ISO extension.
If an error occurs while copying sectors, you are given the choice of trying
the read again or accepting the errors. To exit the copy operation
because too many errors occur, click “TRY AGAIN” and then Click
“CANCEL” on the Progress Display screen.
If you select the option” Accept Read Errors During Copying”, you will not
be prompted when errors occur. This is not recommended and can be
very misleading. You may believe that valid data is being copied when it
is not.

9.3.6 Analyze Disc
This icon in the toolbar will perform an analysis of the information
that has been obtained from scanning the directories of the disc and
displays the information in the form of a list of text messages. The
analysis will be separated into sections, with one section for the table of
contents and one section for each track on the disc.

This icon in the toolbar will display the detailed information about
the Table of Contents (TOC) found on the disc. This includes the type of
track and the size for each track. For data tracks, the volume name and
the number of files and directories are also displayed.
The Track column displays the session number and the track number.
The Type column displays information on the type of track (i.e., Data,
Audio, Blank or Open) and optionally the track control value (0-15 A blank
track appearing anywhere except at the end of the list of tracks is a
reserved track. Note: If the disc is a CD-R or CD-RW and has not
been closed, the Lead out track will also show open indicating the
disc is still open. If there is no lead-out, the disk will only be
readable even if the device has ability to write.
The Name column displays the name of the filesystem present on the
track, when the track contains data. Audio tracks do not contain a
filesystem and will not have a name unless CD-Text information is present.
The Start column shows the starting sector number for the track.
The Length column shows the length of the track in sectors.
The Files Column shows the number of files present in the track, if it
contains data.
The Copy Text button copies information displayed to the clipboard where
it can be pasted into another windows application.

9.3.9 Perform Readability Test
This icon in the toolbar tests the readability of a disc. It provides
information on a specific disc and also determines trends that may
indicate that the latest blank spaces you have are not compatible with your
writer or that your writer may not be working properly. See Section 7.7.2

9.3.12 Adjust Read Attempts
This icon allows you to adjust the number of read attempts.
When a problem is encountered, the drive will try many times to get a
single piece of information before giving up and moving on. The lower the
read attempt number is the less amount of time the process will take.
Usually, lower read attempts are appropriate. If you know you have a
severely damaged disc, you might up the read attempts. The default is
set at 10 read attempts.
Click OK to update the number of read attempts.
Click Cancel to ignore any setting changes made and return to your
previous settings.
The “white” area of the slider is the number of attempts the device will
make on its own. Depending on the device you are using, this may or
may not be able to be altered. The “blue” area is the number of attempts
that DVD X RESCUE is making beyond what the device does. The
number in the center, is the total number of attempts being made and can
range from 1 to 50.
While reducing the number of read attempts does reduce the amount of
time spent trying to get data from the disc, the risk is that if this is set too
low that files which can be recovered easily will appear to be
unrecoverable.

9.4.6 Properties
Select File then Properties menu item from the tool bar to display property
information about the file or folder. There are three possible variations of
the properties depending on what is selected. This shows the name of
the file, the type of file it is, the icon used by Windows for the file and basic
information about the file.
The first is displayed when an individual file is selected. As much
information as is possible to obtain from the file is selected; if less
information is displayed, it is because the format of the disc does not
support multiple dates per file and other such information. This should
normally show the name of the file, the type of file it is, the icon used by
Windows for the file and basic information about the file.
Page 82/150

The second variation on the Properties dialog is displayed when a folder is
selected. This displays information about the files in the folder. Folders
are displayed similarly, with a count of the files contained in the folder and
the total size of the files that have been counted. Note: If multiple files
are selected, the total space occupied by those files will be displayed
without any other information.
The third variation comes from selecting a “session” line that represents a
track and/or file system on the disc. This displays information about the
entire session and all files in it.

9.4.7 Preferences
9.4.7.1 Basic Options Tab
Remove Version marker from files checkbox
If this option is checked, the version mark “1” will not be displayed for files.
If version numbers are not present and they should be, the Analysis
function will still tell you that.
This is a cosmetic option. If seeing the version mark is of no use to you
(and it probably isn’t unless you are testing) enable this option to suppress
the version markers from being displayed.
Ignore Joliet or UDF file system (Display ISO-9660) checkbox
If this option is checked, any Joliet directory or UDF information will be
displayed. DVD X RESCUE will “pick” the UDF information when it is
present and ignore the ISO-9660/Joliet information. Changing this option
reverses the behavior.
Show analysis file details checkbox
If this option is checked, the complete list of files that are included from
another session, destructively overlapping are otherwise noted for various
reasons is placed in the Analysis results. If this option is not checked only
a count of such files is included.
Save window position checklist
If this option is checked, the position of the DVD X RESCUE window will
be saved each time the program is closed and this position will be
restored when it is started the next time. This is a handy option and is
therefore checked by default.
Page 84/150
321 Studios
DVD X COPY PLATINUM User Guide
DVD X RESCUE – File Menu
Sort initial display by name checkbox
If this option is checked, all files are sorted into name order when the list
of files is initially displayed. When changing directories the new directory
is always presented in ascending name order.
This is useful with UDF discs where the directories are not sorted in any
manner.
Accept read errors during copy checklist
Checking this option causes the copy operation not to terminate for a file
when an error is encountered. Enabling this option will usually result in
some data corruption in file(s) where errors are encountered. However,
for a text file or some word processing documents, this may be preferable
to losing the entire file. Even with the error(s), the file may be usable.
This option is NOT set by default.
Always prompt for filename on copy checkbox
By checking this option, you will be prompted to provide a filename for
every file copied. If this option is not enabled, you will not be asked for
filenames, just a directory where to place the copied files.
Force intensive UDF examination checkbox
The intensive examination of UDF discs is capable of finding files that are
not pointed to by the directory. If an error occurs during the normal
examination of a disc, the intensive examination is always performed.
Under some circumstances this intensive examination may not be done
automatically and forcing it can help find files. This occurs mostly with
packet-written discs that have deleted files but are otherwise acceptable.
Note: This option is not saved from session to session and must be set
each time it is to be used.
Keep duplicate files from UDF examination checkbox
When this option is checked, it bypassed the analysis of the file
information collected from a UDF disc after an intensive examination is
done. This may be useful in some circumstances in determining what
happened to a disc and when various files were written to it. However, it
is not generally useful and it is not recommended except for special uses.
Automatically examine disc at startup checkbox
If this option is checked, DVD X RESCUE will use the last used device to
be automatically examined if it is ready. This option is set as a default.

processing to be displayed. This will include files that are normally
dropped from the display because they are not accessible. This option is
not generally useful for most users and is disabled (unchecked) by default.
Click Temp Space to display current assigned location that DVD X
RESCUE uses for temporary work space. By changing the selected folder,
this can be changed to any location.
Click Restore Defaults will cause all of the default preference settings to

9.4.7.2 Readability Test Tab
Samples
This area specifies the number of samples for performing the Quick and
Moderate Readability Test. The default is 500 for Quick and 10,000 for
Moderate.
Error Thresholds
The default mode of operation for the Readability Test is to use statistical
information gathered from testing disc to determine what a good or a bad
disc is. The analysis process will learn and will produce meaningful
results after the first three discs have been examined using the same drive.
The error threshold is a relative process which allows you to enter a
percentage of errors that you create based on past experiences to analyze
a disc. It is based off of analyzing disc, primarily off lead-in sectors, as
well as adjusting where the laser reads and how many times it tries.
An alternative to this is to use thresholds. This is where the maximum
percentage of hard and soft errors are stated as values between 0 and
999 in tenths of a percent. Thus, 25 is 2.5% and 999 is 99.9%.
To use thresholds for the Readability Test the Enable thresholds checkbox
must be checked and values entered for hard and soft errors. After this is
done, the Readability Test will evaluate discs based on these thresholds
instead of the statistics gathered from testing discs.

Log files with errors
When this box is checked, a file will be written listing the source of errors
that are detected. The file is specified by the Error log file control
described in Section 8.7.2.6 Error log file. This file will contain either a
block number or a filename when it is possible to determine that the error
will be indicated by a minute-second time stamp.
Ignore soft errors
When this box is checked, the Readability test will ignore all “soft” errors.
“Soft errors” are errors that can possibly to be corrected by the device
itself. This changes the functionality significantly and is not recommended
for normal applications.
Reset statistics
During the normal course of testing a disc, the statistical information may
become too strict in evaluating discs.

Specifies the name of a file into which messages about errors are written.
This file is only used when the option Log files with errors is checked. Use

9.4.7.3 Device Settings Tab
Use of these settings is usually not necessary because DVD X RESCUE
will automatically determine the appropriate setting for each device.
However, determining the proper setting may require scanning several
different discs and the scan will be retried several times for each disc.
This can take considerable time. If you would rather control the process
yourself, these settings can be chosen manually.
Note: Be aware that 321 Studios can only offer limited
advice/support about what the proper setting should be for each
device. There are no standards for this and different devices behave
differently. You cannot harm your device by choosing an improper
selection, but you can get misleading results. 321 Studio’s opinion
is that the automatic selection of this setting should be done for
each device.
Device Name
This column shows the name of the device(s) present on your computer.
Up to four such devices can be listed. DVD X RESCUE does not support
more than four devices on a single computer. If there are more than four
devices, then the devices listed will be the ones that are highest on the
ribbons.

Setting
This is the selection of how the readability Test will be used on the device.
Choose one of the combinations of keywords that are available.
There is a selection list for each connected device that displays each of
the selectable configurations for that device. Choosing the “*Auto*”
selection instructs the Readability Test to determine a setting which
results in soft errors from the device. When such a setting is found, it will
be retained as the new setting for the device. If no soft errors are
detected for any setting, the setting of “*Auto*” is left for the next time.
The selection of “None” indicates that the drive cannot return recoverable
errors and therefore only retry operations will be suppressed. This is a
normal condition for many high speed devices. To accommodate this,
DVD X RESCUE uses other information gathered during the Readability
Test process to determine when recoverable errors have occurred.
By selecting any choice other than the first Readability Test tool will use
that parameter setting and will not evaluate any others. These settings
are described as:
•
DCR – Disable Correction
•
DTE – Disable Transfer on Error
•
PER – Post Error – returns soft errors
•
TB – Transfer Block
Many devices accept the commands to change these settings. However,
321 Studios has found that not all devices will actually return soft errors
even when they are documented to do so.
If you have the option to do so, “PER” alone or in combination with any
other keyword is preferred. If “PER” is not available, “DCR” is a
reasonable setting. If neither of these is available, selecting “None” is
probably the best choice.

C2
This checkbox is enabled if the device supports C2 error reporting. Some
devices that do not support it are unacceptably slow when it is turned on.
If the checkbox is grayed out, the device does not support it. C2 error
reporting is a way that some drives support reporting correctable errors
back to the computer. Therefore, if you turn on C2 error reporting, you will
get real error information for correctable errors.

Keep Last
The maximum number of discs for which detailed information is to be kept
is specified here. For each disc that detailed information is being kept, the
data size is shown. Entries which do not have a data size shown have no
detailed information and are occupying only a very small amount of space.
The default number of discs for which to keep information is 30. This will
require a small amount of hard disk space for this information, but it
makes examining discs extremely fast after the first time.
Disc Memory catalog
Each disc in the catalog shows the name of the disc (if known), the last
date and time it was examined and whether or not the examination was
completed or not. The data size reflects the amount of space the detailed
information occupies on disk.
Click Empty to cause the entire contents of the disc memory to be

9.6. Tools Menu
This section describes the commands available through the Tools Menu.
9.6.1 Analysis
Select Tools then Analysis menu item to instruct DVD X RESCUE to
perform an analysis of the information obtained from scanning the
directories of the disc. The analysis of the disc is separated into sections,
with one section for the Table of Contents and a section for each track on
the disc.
The Analysis test summarizes all of the findings of DVD X RESCUE about
the disc in a single place and presents information about the disc which is
critical before sending it for duplication. This information is also helpful
when recovering data to simply collect all of the information in one place.
There are informational and warning messages displayed; Warnings will
be displayed in red. At the end of the analysis, a message indicates if the
disc has passed or failed checks for replication. The information can be
useful even if you are not sending the disc out to be replicated or mass
produced. Each message displayed has an explanation. To see details of
the explanation click on any message.
Analysis information is presented for ISO-9660, Joliet and UDF discs.
HFS and HFS+ discs are not analyzed to any extent beyond identifying
the track(s) containing data as being HFS and HFS+ format.
Audio discs have the CDDB identification key displayed for them.

9.6.2 Table of Contents
Select Tools then Table of Contents menu item from the tool bar to
instruct DVD X RESCUE to display detailed information about the Table of
Contents found on the CD or DVD. For each track this includes the type
of track and the size. For data tracks the volume name and the number of
files and directories (combined) are also displayed.
The Track column displays the session number and the track number.
Note: CD-R and CD-RW may have one or more sessions. Manufactured
CD’s will always have only one session. DVD discs will usually display a
single Table of Contents entry with a lead-out; however, DVD+R discs
may have multiple tracks displayed. The lead-out does not indicate
readable information; it simply marks the end of a compact disc. If no
lead-out is present, the disc was not finalized and will only be readable
even if the device has ability to write..
The Type column displays information on the type of track (i.e., Data,
Audio, Blank or Open) and optionally the track control value (0-15). A
blank track appearing anywhere except at the end of the list of tracks is a
reserved track.
Page 96/150

The Length column shows the length of the track in sectors.
The Files Column shows the number of files present in the track, if it
contains data.
The Copy Text button copies information displayed to the clipboard where
it can be pasted into another windows application.
Click OK to close the Table of Contents window.

9.6.3 Volume
Select Tools then Volume menu item from the tool bar to instruct DVD X
RESCUE to display detailed volume descriptor information. Each track on
a disc may contain a different volume and sometimes multiple volumes
are displayed for the same track.
The Display area shows the information DVD X RESCUE has retrieved
from the CD’s Volume Descriptor.
The Copy Text button copies information displayed to the clipboard where
it can be pasted into another windows application.

9.6.4 Readability Test
Checking the “readability” of a disc ensures that the disc was properly
recorded and can be read on other devices. This test provides information
on the disc being tested and allows you to determine trends indicating the
compatibility of the device and the blank disc being used.
Select Tools then Readability Test menu item to instruct DVD X RESCUE
to test the readability of the disc. A warning about starting other
programs during the readability test will display. Click “OK” to proceed.
A window will display asking you what level of testing you would like to
have done. A Quick Scan reads a small number of samples from the disc
and accuracy is limited. A Moderate Scan reads more samples but in
most cases is no faster than Complete. A Complete scan reads
everything.
To perform a meaningful test of the readability of the disc, it is suggested
that a Complete test be done. They both take about the same amount of
time; therefore, a Complete Scan test is recommended to provide better
results.
The results of the readability test are two values which indicate the
percentage of hard and soft errors that were encountered. Hard errors are
those that could not be automatically recovered from the device in a single
read attempt. Soft errors are those that would normally be recovered from
a single read attempt.
Page 98/150
321 Studios
DVD X COPY PLATINUM User Guide
DVD X RESCUE – Tools Menu
These two values are interpreted using information gathered from all of
the uses of the Readability Test over time and a good or bad indicator is
given.
While it might be expected, a correctly recorded disc would have both
values at zero. This is not necessarily true for all devices. Some devices
will show zero errors from this test while others will not; it is dependant on
the actual drive itself. The percentage of errors is not as important as the
trend of how your device reads discs over time.
Helpful hints relating to the readability Test are:
•
Try not to use the device that wrote the disc
•
Test discs that are known to be good, this will give DVD X
RESCUE information about how a “good” disc can be read.
•
Don’t expect too much from the Quick Scan option
Click START to begin scanning the disc. DVD X RESCUE will display a
status bar to show you how far along it is in the scan process and displays
the current scanning status in the status bar of the main window.
Click Close to ignore any changes you’ve made and close the dialog box
or to interrupt the scan in progress.
Click Help to display further information about the window.

9.6.5 Disc Report
Select Tools then Disc Report menu item from the tool bar to instruct DVD
X RESCUE to write a text file with the entire directory contents of the
currently displayed disc including all sessions. Each file is displayed with
the starting block number on the disc, the size in bytes or kilobytes, the
date/time stamp for the file and the name of the file.
You will be presented with a Save File window asking where the disc
report file should be saved. It will be saved as a /txt file and can be
opened with any text editor.
9.6.6 Write Sub-Q Data
Select Tools then Write Sub-Q Data menu item from the tool bar to
instruct DVD X RESCUE to write the contents of the currently selected
Audio track Q subchannel data to a file. The file is formatted as a text file
with 16 bytes of data for each sector in hexadecimal notation.
Most devices can perform this function. If the commands required are not
accepted, an error message will be given and the operation will be
terminated. There are also some devices that will accept the command
but not produce any output; this will likely result in the same data being
repeated over and over again.
You will be presented with a Save File window asking where the text file
should be saved. The information will not be displayed to the user but will
be written to the designated file.
The file will display the position, Media Catalog # (MCN) and the
International Standard Recording Code (ISRC).
Page 100/150

DVD X COPY PLATINUM User Guide
DVD X RESCUE – Tools Menu
9.6.7 Disc Map
Select Tools then Disc Map menu item to instruct DVD X RESCUE to
present a graphic image of space utilization on a disc. Through the use of
different colors to represent different usages of the space on the disc, it
can quickly be seen how the space on the disc is being used. If one or
more areas of the disc are displayed as “unaccounted for”, it can be an
indication of lost data on the disc that no file points to.
The legend on the left indicates the meaning of various colors used in the
display. Clicking on a location within the graphic will display the use of
that location as well as any file which may be occupying that space.
If you see a large amount of the disc is not accounted for, this may
indicate that there is additional data that can be retrieved. On a UDF
format disc, this may indicate that a forced intensive examination is
needed.

9.6.8 Hardware Information
Select Tools then Hardware Information menu item from the tool bar to
instruct DVD X RESCUE to interrogate the currently selected device. It
returns values for the following information if available:
• device name – Name as reported by the device itself
• revision – Revision level of the device
• date of revision – Date of revision level, not the date the device was
updated
• using 20 byte commands – True if the device requires 10-byte form
• track info available – True if the device supports returning track
information
• loading mechanism – Describes type of mechanism with which the
drive operates. There are five possibilities: Caddy, Tray, Pop-up,
Changer (individual disc) and Changer (cartridge).
• Bar code reading supported – True if device can read bar
information from discs
• UPC code is read – True is UPC code information is available from
audio disc
• ISRC code is read – True if ISRC code is available from audio discs.
This code identifies the recording studio rather that the artist, so it does
not uniquely identify audio discs.
• C2 Error Pointers – True if the device supports reporting C2 error
information
• Maximum Reading speed – The maximum speed for reading data
from the disc. The maximum digital audio extraction (DAE) speed may
be considerably less than this.
• Device buffer size (K) – Size of the device buffer in K. Large buffers
for recorders help prevent buffer underruns; large buffers for CD-ROM
drives help stream data from the device.
• Multisession capable – True if multisession discs are supported.
• Mode 2 Form 1 supported – True if the device is capable of reading
discs with Mode 2 Form 1 tracks.
• Mode 2 Form 2 supported - True if the device is capable of reading
discs with Mode 2 Form 2 tracks. These are generally not used today
as they do not contain error recovery information.
• Digital output on port 1 – True if the device supports digital output
(IEC958) directly. When this is true there is a separate connector.
• Digital output port 2 – True if the device has a second digital output
port.
• Audio play supported – True if the device supports playing audio
tracks under computer control and can report its status while playing
audio tracks.
• Reading CDDA Supported – True if the commands for reading CDDA
directly from an audio disc are supported.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PLATINUM and Gold?
Gold is two programs, XCOPY and XPRESS, while PLATINUM is
XPRESS with the ability to control compression ratios & whether or not
to include or omit them. PLATINUM will allow you to split, control
compression rates, and omit titlesets, giving you full control over your
end result.
What is the difference between Simple and Advanced?
Simple is XPRESS. Advanced will let you select titlesets, and then either
split them or use compression to fit onto 1 disk.
What is a titleset?
A titleset is a set of chapters or features contained on a
DVD. Everything contained on a DVD, from the movie to the menu to
access it, will be contained in one of these. Many things can exist in a
single titleset, from multiple chapters, to all the menus on the DVD.
What is a TDF?
“Title Definition Format”. A TDF is the exact settings used while backing
up the movie. They are especially usefull for any movie that is difficult to
backup due to extreme authoring technique differences.
How do I split a disk?
Select the titlesets desired, and then verify the “Use Compression”
checkbox is not selected. Then press NEXT. The Compression tab will
become the Splitting tab.
Are there any kinds of disks that can't be Compressed or Split?
Based on the way some disks are created, or the authoring technique
used, there may be disks that will cause problems while attempting to
back up. Please call technical support if you have any questions in
regards to a specific disk. Refer to Section 2.5 Support/Help Resources.
What is the best way to copy episodic disks?
Due to the different authoring techniques, as well as the different ways
that these disks are made, there is no hard and fast answer for this. Call
technical support if you have questions regarding a specific disk. Refer
to Section 2.5 Support/Help Resources.
Can I copy titlesets off of multiple disks and burn them to a single
disk?
No.
Can I copy a copy I made with a different program in PLATINUM?
No, nor can you do that with any of our programs.
