To this end, we are proud to share this year’s accomplishments and how an engaged and committed parent community rallied to support the School we hold in such high regard. are committed to the success of their students In the fall of 2013, we welcomed 10 new families. The New Par ent Cockt ai l Par t y was a wonderful start to the year and the enthusiasm in the room was palpable. Families shared stories about their children and how their long and winding roads led them to Parkside. By the end of the night, it was hard to differentiate between the new and veteran families. In October, Parkside hosted its Annual Book Fai r . The gym looked spectacular and served as a marvelous venue to connect children to high-quality books. It was a joy to see the students on the floor, books sprawled everywhere with passions abound. All proceeds purchased books for the library and classrooms! In December, the much anticipated Mul t i cul t ur al Hol i day Par t y was held. The event was a culinary treat as families donated dishes representing their culture and traditions. Children ran up and down the staircases and through the hallways engaging in a variety of activities like spin art, face painting, and crafts. There was a balloon twister, a magician, and the ever-popular photo booth. Before all of us could catch our breath, planning began for the Annual Spr i ng Auct i on. This year’s theme THE MAD HATTER, sparked much creativity among the committee. Parents and supporters of the school pounded the pavement and their efforts paid off tremendously. There were items that appealed to everyone including vacation homes, walk-on roles, backstage passes, sporting event tickets, restaurant certificates, gift cards, and spa services to name a few. As is always the case, the children’s artwork ignited bidding wars. We are proud to report this year’s auction raised over $140,000. The PA continued to acknowledge the staff for their incredible talents, guidance, and dedication. We provided snacks for the monthly staff meetings. In May, the PA hosted the St af f Appr eci at i on Cockt ai l Par t y. The gym was transformed into a bar-like atmosphere with wine, hors d’oeuvres and desserts. The year came to a close with the Spr i ng Bout i que. Parents eagerly gathered new and gently used items to sell. For the third year in a row, the boutique was held outside of the School because of the community’s interest in patronizing the event. This year’s boutique raised $2,800, and the proceeds are earmarked for the School’s operating budget. The PA would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Parkside Community. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without your perseverance, commitment, and most importantly, time. We are delighted to report that over $145,000 was raised during the 2013-2014 academic year. Each and every dollar is critical to the School’s ability to provide each child with a multi-dimensional education, one that allows them to develop respect and understanding for themselves and others. This year therapists co-created S.P.O.T Group (Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy), which integrated Speech and OT activities/exercises into a weekly push-in session in the classroom to address topics such as Unexpected/Expected behaviors, Social thinking, Whole Body Listening, Zones of Regulation, Arts and Crafts projects, and Nutrition. Since the spring of this school year, the Social Work Department has been working on writing an article for a prominent professional journal on child therapy. Social Work Staff were invited to submit their manuscript at the end of the summer for possible publication. The article describes our approach to children, creating space for therapeutic relationships, play, and development in a school setting. It also conveys how the interdisciplinary team relationships, which all staff members forge, are vital to serving the whole child and their families. This year in art we learned about art through the ages. From cave painting to Mona Lisa to modern art, we drew, painted, collaged, and sculpted with clay. The Speech Department attended a seminar by Nancy Tarshis, MA, MS CCC-SLP on Teaching Social Thinking through Stories and Play for Early Learners to continue to support Parkside students’ understanding, use, and development of social communication and pragmatic language skills. Additionally, the department has worked to enhance understanding of the social-emotional aspects of communication, through ongoing collaboration with the social work department, consultation with Dr. Sima Gerber, Phd., and group study. Members of the department also collaborated closely with Cathy Constable, MS CCC-SLP, Ph.D., a literacy expert, to improve understanding of vocabulary, semantics, and morphological development. Richard Alston, Nori Anna Cohen, Rachel Sosland, Anne Tuohy, and Diane Zeitlin Social Workers We added technology as a new medium to the art room and Parkside students had a chance to use a virtual pottery wheel to create Ancient Greek Pots. With our new digital projector, Apple TV, and iPad combination, students could view their own art and famous art examples in large scale, and watch instructional videos demonstrating close up techniques on the big screen. Our students painted the scenery for the play with large scale paintings in the style of Vincent Van Gogh. For the third year, we have maintained Artsonia.com, an online art museum where students' artwork can be shared with the world. Our Art Assistant program, where older children assist the youngest classes in art, has been thriving and helping to build a sense of responsibility and leadership amongst its participants. What a spectacular year we had in art! Lauren Behar Art Teacher The Speech and Language Department also added the “Parkside Speech Tree”, a new mural on the 5th Floor this school year, which targets key temporal vocabulary, including calendar and weather concepts. Each season, students from all classes have contributed to decorating this mural while practicing important temporal vocabulary (i.e., seasons, months, weather) and science curricular concepts (i.e., plants, insects, states of matter, and the water cycle). This project supports a schoolwide initiative to help strengthen our students’ understanding of “time and space” vocabulary, which is essential to building overall language comprehension and academic development across all curriculum units. Lauren Cohen, Jamie Dolan, Meredith Feher, Robin Goldberg, and Erin Willis Speech Pathologists 6 7 parkside updates Technology Occupational Therapy Teaching Department Within the 2013-2014 school-year, the Parkside School created a program that focuses on technology being integrated into the curriculum. The theory that drives the shift is that technology provides teachers and students the tools to break down barriers to learning. With a fully working computer lab with enough computers to serve an entire class, students have been able to access information that is presented in multiple formats (video, visual, audio, text) and create work that is driven by their strengths. The School has also increased the number of iPads to 38, which means there will be iPads in every classroom and every department. Professional development for staff is built into the upcoming school year to facilitate the implementation of meaningful instruction aided by technology. This year we piloted the Zones of Regulation program and it was a great success. The kids learned how to sort 20 different feelings into 4 colored zones and how to use body and brain tools to be “zone movers” throughout the school day. We will continue to reinforce this program this upcoming year. Reading, math, social studies, science, group social skills, responsibility within a group, and discovering the wonders of being a learner are just some of the examples of the focus of the teaching staff every year. In the 2013-2014 school-year, our department has made an impact in and out of the classroom. Throughout the year, we hosted observers and trained student teachers from Bank Street College of Education, New York University, Hunter College of Education, and Fordham University. Jessica Durrett Technology Coordinator We integrated iPad into our treatment sessions, and provided proper ergonomics for computer work stations to accommodate all students and staff members. OT staff attended various workshops including Nutrition with Kelly Dorfman, S.O.S (Sensory Oral Motor Sequence) Feeding, Recognizing and Treating Anxiety Disorders in Children, and Executive Functioning. In OT we also continued with in house consultation services with Dr. Kapoor, a developmental optometrist, who provided visual screenings, recommendations, visual exercises, classroom accommodations, and modifications for maximizing student learning. We also partnered with an Orthotist (Mr. Dave) who provided in-house consultation and evaluation to determine if children would benefit from lower extremity foot orthotics for improved gait, balance, and proper positioning. We integrated S.P.O.T Group, Speech and OT activities/exercises, into a weekly session in the classroom to address topics such as Unexpected/Expected behaviors, Social thinking, Whole Body Listening, Zones of Regulation, Arts and Crafts projects, and Nutrition. We hosted three level one interns from Touro College, NYU, and Columbia University and accommodated OT volunteers and OT observation students. Nina DelRosario, Tara King, Rebecca Lewin, and Christine Yen Occupational Therapists 8 In-depth studies of the moon, trees, weather, rocks and minerals, and the Hudson River were among the many science topics explored in classrooms. An enrichment activity during a rock study included students exploring Central Park and having a scavenger hunt to locate different rocks in the park. Upper School students had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Natural History and expand their knowledge of Native Americans in social studies. Traveling via Google Earth helped students to grasp the space between places as they studied Australia, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Guatemala. A culminating trip after a comprehensive study of immigration in the United States was a visit to the Tenement Museum to learn specifically about immigration in New York City. Lower school classes were busy exploring sinking, floating, and magnets. Last spring lower school classes created and compared timelines of the life cycles of tadpoles and chicks; they were also the class pets! One of our classrooms even video-chatted with a NASA Scientist to support their unit on space! In addition to the great experiences in the classroom, lower school classes also explored neighborhoods, city bridges and parks, and learned about the importance of community helpers by seeing them in action. In collaboration with the Speech and OT Departments, all of the students at Parkside were busy regulating their bodies and strategizing to keep calm and ready to learn by using The Zones of Regulation. This past year all of the students were very motivated to work in the computer lab incorporating technology in to all curriculum areas. Some students created and shared power point presentations on our SmartBoards, and some classes even worked with iPads for the first time! In addition to all of the work in and out of the classroom, the teachers led our community and budding philanthropists to contribute outside of our walls of Parkside by planning and organizing the annual walkathon to raise money for Room to Read, which is an organization that builds libraries and schools around the world. Jackie Ament, Grace An, Katie Bassett, Jennifer Bieber, Martyna Buczek, Rebecca Chun, Andres Cruz, Libby Davenport, Jessica Durrett, Kristin Fraser, Annie Frazier, Jessica Frazzetta, Lilah Gosman, Anthony Lisi, Jillian Livolsi, Caitlin Mandy, Dan Meadow, Maureen Miller, Lisel Murdock, Kat Palma, Katherine Parker, Chris Schranck, Rachel Schreiber, Erin Schultz, Grace Spiegel, Jakiem Swinger, Julia Talen, Rachel Teitcher, and Kim Whitney Parkside Teaching Staff 9 parkside updates Yoga Gym Music and Drama Our yoga curriculum is a cumulative curriculum whereby each schoolyear we build upon skills acquired the previous school year. Parkside’s lower school students learn basic yoga poses through games and musical movement sequences. The focus is upon building core strength to support self-regulation, expressive language, and to create a strong foundation for the use of the extremities. Students are learning basic breathing exercises to support self-regulation. Once these sequences are learned, students then are given the opportunity to lead their classmates in yoga class. Leading class emphasizes important skills such as initiating, sequencing, and the coordination of movement and expressive language. Last year in gym, our students participated in a dynamic physical education program that promotes inclusion of all students, teaches responsibility and cooperation, promotes self-discipline, and was guided by the NASPE (National Association of Sports and Physical Education) Content Standards. Our program also included skill-related fitness components such as balance, agility, speed, and coordination. Through specific instructional objectives, we worked on hand-eye coordination, body management, and fundamental and specialized skills. Not only are our activities exciting and fun, they are also easily transferred and modified to be played outside of gym class. The Parkside School Music & Drama Program offers a comprehensive curriculum through the process of exploring, learning, creating, and performing. In the 2013-2014 year, our curriculum's focus was the introduction to Broadway Musicals and themes around the world. A variety of performances occur throughout the year and we meet with each class two to three times depending on age. Groups performed songs from Les Miserables and Annie, as well as popular folk tunes from France, Italy and Sweden. Students contributed to performances with a variety of roles including stage manager, accompanist, and set-builder. In our classroom, students explore singing, acting, storytelling, performing with instruments, music literacy, listening, and body movement. The program helps students to take different perspectives, increase spontaneity, and work in a collaborative atmosphere within a group. As you know, Gene and Ronnie were not only the first to help create The Parkside School; they maintained their significant support over the 28 years the school has served children. Their incredible generosity made it possible for us to move to our present facility and at the same time double our enrollment. They made numerous challenge grants to help with capital campaigns which allowed the school to make needed improvements, they helped to create an endowment, and most recently helped create Parkside’s new Fund for Teacher Excellence.
